MONTANA GETTING HERE From Salt Lake City, Utah: Take I-15 north to Idaho Falls, Idaho (119 miles) At exit 119, take ramp RIGHT to US-20. From Idaho Falls, Idaho: Take US-20 north (approx. 110 miles) From Bozeman, Montana: Hwy 191 South (approx. 90 miles) From Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Grand Teton National Park: North on WY-22 (17.1 miles) over Teton Pass and into Idaho. Stay on SR-33 heading northwest (23.9 miles). Turn RIGHT (north) onto SR-32 (28.4 miles) towards Ashton. Remain on SR-32/SR-47 for one mile through the town of Ashton. Then turn RIGHT (north) onto US-20 (37 miles) to West Yellowstone (50 miles). NOTE: The west gate into Yellowstone National Park is open to regular auto travel in the summer months only, from mid-April through early November. Winter access is by commercially guided snowcoach or snowmobile only. West Yellowstone Airport (WYS): Located just one mile north of West Yellowstone. Open June-September. Served by SkyWest Airlines (Delta Connection). AVIS & Budget Car Rentals on site. WEATHER

Located at an elevation of 6,666 feet, mountain weather can be unpredictable. Summer average temperatures are in the 70s and 80s (F), lows in 40s & 50s (F). Winter temperatures can be among the coldest in the Lower 48, highs in the 20s & 30s (F) during the day to below zero at night. The ground is covered in snow. In fall and spring, crisp mornings are frequently followed by cool, brilliant days. WHAT TO WEAR: Layering clothes will help keep you comfortable all day. You should also have a water-resistant, windproof outer layer. Boots, hats and gloves are a must for winter.

These “cycle-only� days allow bikers to see the first splashes of color as green sedges and bright yellow monkey-flowers emerge amidst dwindling snow banks. Bison trudge along the roads and elk feed along the rivers. May brings bison calves and bison jams on the roadways. Bison begin calving in mid-April and by May you can start to see hundreds of bright reddishbrown calves among the bison herds. The bison gather in traditional “nursery� areas such as Fountain Flats just north of Old Faithful or in areas along rivers such as Lamar and Hayden Valleys.

WINTER With an average of 143” of snow every year and 184 days of sun, West Yellowstone has earned its place on the list of “11 Coolest Winter Places in America” (Budget Travel) and one of the “Top Ten Winter Towns” by National Geographic Traveler. It is continuously voted one of the top Snowmobile Destinations. Outside the park there are millions of acres of public lands for snowmobilers and cross-country skiers to enjoy. Explore over 400 hundred miles of groomed snowmobile trails by West Yellowstone and the State of Idaho in the surrounding National Forests. Over 50km of groomed Nordic ski trails start from town. The Rendezvous Ski Trail system offers a groomed 35KM trail, usually groomed daily and available from November through April. The Boundary Ski Trail (pet-

NEW! OHV TRAIL MAP

ATV and OHV riders now have a new resource when recreating on the trails around West Yellowstone. The new OHV map, created in 2017, mimics our Snowmobile Trail map, and shows the trails both in Montana around West Yellowstone and Idaho around Island Park. The trail maps are available at several locations in West Yellowstone and Island Park including the Chambers/ Visitor Centers and Forest Service offices. Reminder: Off-highway vehicles operating on public land for recreational purposes must be registered and display a decal placed in a conspicuous location on the machine. Residents: OHVs must be registered at the County Treasurer's office in the county where the owner resides. This is a one-time registration and valid until the current owner sells the OHV. Nonresidents: Nonresidents using their OHVs in Montana must purchase a Nonresident Annual Use Permit, which is valid for the calendar year (January 1 – December 31). Residents of Idaho and North Dakota are exempt. The Nonresident Annual Use Permit allows OHV use on trails only. OHVs must be street legal to be ridden on roads. Permits are $27 and available through the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Online Licensing Service, at any FWP office, or at Permit Vendors.

YELLOWSTONE HISTORIC CENTER Since establishment as the world's first National Park in 1872, curious travelers have ventured from every corner of the world to experience the place called "Wonderland." The Yellowstone Historic Center Museum, located in the Union Pacific Depot in West Yellowstone’s Historic District, aims to share the unique story of travel to and through Yellowstone National Park. The museum features exhibits on travel during the stagecoach era, the railroad heyday, the advent of the automobile, and beyond. The museum showcases a number of historically preserved and refurbished vehicles including stagecoaches and freight wagons. A must-see is the Mount Washburn Special, one of only three coaches built specifically for the trip to the top of Mount Washburn and back. The Historic Center Museum also has exhibits on the heritage of the West Yellowstone area. Learn about the early residents of West Yellowstone as well as the Union Pacific staff who spent their summers in town. Experience the grandeur of railroad architecture in the early 1900s by taking a self-guided tour of the Oregon Short Line Historic District, the largest intact assemblage of historic railroad buildings in the United States. In 2018 the Yellowstone Historic Center will unveil the completed exhibit “Ho! For Yellowstone: The Progression of Travel To and Through America’s First National Park.” The exhibit details each era of transportation and highlights the experiences of travelers. From entering the park on horseback to driving a Ford Model “T” through the gates, the exhibit will share the history of how visitors traveled to and toured Yellowstone National Park. As 2018 marks the 110th anniversary of the Eagle’s Store, there will be a feature exhibit on the history of the Eagle’s Store and family. The YHC will also be presenting an exhibit on Fred F. Willson, the architect of the Eagle’s Store and many other beautiful properties in the Gallatin County. EAGLE’S STORE CELEBRATES 110TH YEAR While working summers at the Fountain Hotel in Yellowstone National Park, Sam and Ida Eagle saw opportunity upon learning that the Oregon Short Line of the Union Pacific Railroad planned to run a spur route to the West entrance of Yellowstone National Park. Sam negotiated with the US Forest Service to survey and later lease property across from the proposed rail station in West Yellowstone. This is where the Eagle’s Store story begins. Sam and Ida partnered with friends Alex and Laura Stuart to build and open a general store in 1908. By 1910, Alex and Laura had purchased Murray’s Store across the street and began a separate business. Sam and Ida built a second store in 1910 and had expanded into a third section by 1916. The early store buildings were replaced by the current 3-story roughhewn log and stone structure designed by Bozeman architect Fred F. Willson. The rustic park architecture-styled building housed the business and was home for the Eagle family of 10 children. Construction began in 1928 and was completed during the middle of the 1930 season with all work being done by the Eagle family and Sam’s Pennsylvania cousin, Raymond Mauger. The store was built in three sections around the older stores allowing the Eagles to continue operations during the profitable tourist season. was the last section finished and included the 1910 soda fountain. Sam worked diligently to have the leased land near the railroad changed to land for purchase, which was instrumental in the development of West Yellowstone as a town. Sam and Ida were leaders in the community, active both in business and personally. Sam held Sunday school for children and adults. He applied to the state requesting and securing a school teacher for the children of the area. Eagle children were 4 of the 8 children in the first class. Sam and Ida provided land for the Protestant church and lobbied for an airport. Ida was storekeeper, cook and seamstress, making sure each of the 10 children knew his or her responsibilities in the store and within the community. Sam was an entrepreneur who worked hard to assure the financial success of his family. For years he worked as a fishing and hunting guide. He and Ida sold staples including food, camping, fishing and hunting equipment, and outdoor wear. They later added products like gas, cameras and film, western wear and jewelry. Space in the store was rented to a barber and a baker. Sam served as postmaster from 1909 to 1935 and housed the post office within the store. Sam expanded his business further when he bought a 1915 Ford so he could take tourists fishing and sightseeing. Eagle’s Store had the only telephone switchboard in DestinationYellowstone.com

West Yellowstone for years. Sam and his older children built rental properties including storefronts, cabins and an auto garage in West Yellowstone. Sam and Ida were never idle and taught their children to have the same work ethic as they had. Not having had the opportunity to attend college, Sam stated he wanted to have as many children as he and Ida could afford to educate. They purchased a home in Bozeman so their children could attend high school and Montana State College (now MSU) which all 10 children attended. Visitors today can wander through the wings of Eagle’s Store and treat themselves to ice cream at the original 1910 soda fountain. Mom Eagle’s recipe is still used for the chocolate sauce. Old photos of the Eagle family and early West Yellowstone life adorn the walls inside the east wing of the store. The original skis that Sam used to travel 14 miles to Henry's Lake, Idaho to exchange the winter mail when he was postmaster are proudly displayed in the clothing area of the store. In the tackle shop, one finds Sam’s duck boat, photos of the family fishermen and some of their fish mounts. June 21-24, 2018, is a special celebration for Eagle’s Store’s 110th year of business. The Yellowstone Historic Center (YHC) will feature the summer exhibits Eagle's Wings: Generations of the Eagle Family and Store and Fred F. Willson: Diaries of a Dreamer. Photography isn’t just snapping pictures of beautiful scenes, loved ones or animals. It’s preserving memories of things you treasure. Through photography you can bring a person from their spot in the world to yours. You can show them things they’ll never see and open worlds to them that they’ll never experience. They can stand with you among the geological wonders of Yellowstone or watch as a grizzly bear nurses her cubs. That’s how powerful a photograph can be if the subject is captured correctly. Photographs are created by making choices and making the right choices depends on the knowledge of the photographer. A photographer friend of mine says that you don’t “take” a picture; you “make” a picture. He’s absolutely correct, because YOU decide on the subject, the lighting, what’s to be included in the picture, the time of day, etc. and that’s what “makes” a picture. Great photographs are not necessarily the result of having the best equipment in the world. It’s how you use what you have. Anyone can “make” an incredible photograph by following some basic principles. One thing that is absolutely crucial is knowing how to use your camera correctly, whether it’s an iPhone or an expensive camera. The time to figure that out is before you get to your destination, not when you’re trying to get that once in a lifetime photograph. Read your manual, take some practice shots and always check your camera settings before taking a picture. Make sure you’re using the correct shutter speed, aperture, ISO or Mode. 36 West Yellowstone Montana Travel Planner 2018/19

Decide on your subject. What do your want your viewer to see? What’s your story? Every picture should tell a story. You’ll have a more interesting picture if you compose in thirds, placing your subject to the side of the frame and leaving some space in front of your subject, especially if the subject is a person or an animal. Placing the subject in the center normally creates a more static picture and that’s not what you want. Lines that lead towards your subject will help the viewer see what you want them to see and feel what you felt when you created the picture. Try to take pictures in the early morning or in the evening when the light is nice instead of in the middle of the day when the sun is bright and the shadows harsh. Don’t put the camera away when it’s foggy. Those days are great for environmental and surreal pictures. Make sure your shutter speed is fast enough and that you have enough light. Hold your camera steady and use a tripod if possible. Raise your ISO if needed. A little noise is better than a blurry picture. Capture moments!

In springtime, Yellowstone’s ‘babes’ are out in force, offering incredible photo opportunities. Small groups of BISON are on the move along roadways and rivers back into Yellowstone from their nursery areas. Check the large areas along the Lower Geyser Basin area. Along Fountain Flat Drive, you can see hundreds of bison cows and calves. Early evening is a great time to sit and watch the calves, who resemble large, playful, bright red dogs as they run, butt heads, and play in meadows. ELK can still be found along the rivers and in wet meadows. Pregnant cows should be dropping calves soon, if not already. Watch along the edges of the pines in early evening for any new calves. This is the best time of year to spot BEARS feeding in the lower altitudes in Yellowstone before they head back to upper elevations and cooler forested areas for the summer months. Some of the best grizzly sightings have been along the Lamar Valley road and across the Yellowstone River throughout the Hayden Valley. While the bison rut can begin as early as mid-July, the real show is in August in Hayden Valley where thousands of bison gather for the annual mating. Bulls communicate and dominate by a series of sounds that range from snorts and grunts to all-out bellows. Visiting Yellowstone Park in the fall has been one of the best kept travel secrets for seasoned park travelers. This is the time of year when the sounds of the rivers and thump of the thermals replaces the summer sound of summer’s stream of passing cars. Now, is the time to see the unusual – a favorite bird sitting on a still pond, a young moose meandering along a stream, or a group of playful otters jumping on and off a log on the banks of the Yellowstone River. Every turn brings a photo waiting to be taken. Snow-capped peaks expose their true heights, while snowdrifts outline crags and crannies harder to spot in other seasons. A coating of frost lines riverbanks, while blocks of ice (formerly white foam) bob down the rivers. Thermals are more noticeable as the colder fall temperatures create billowing clouds and highlight soft steamy tendrils from hidden corners. This is a time to walk the boardwalks, sometimes with just a grazing elk cow and calf for company. One of Yellowstone’s most famous events is the annual elk rut or mating season. As the older cows enter estrus (early September), they begin to herd together along with calves and one year old bulls. Older bulls begin to hang around the edges of the cow herd and are constantly acting out to drive off other bulls and retain dominance. Watch for the large bulls in the Canyon, Gibbon Meadow, and Mammoth Hot Springs areas.

BIRDING Over 311 species of birds have been documented in Yellowstone since it was first established in 1872. Arm yourself with binoculars, a Yellowstone Bird Field Checklist, a camera with a good zoom, and a good illustrated guide, and you are ready to go birding. Perhaps the most famous bird nest in the Park is located six miles east of the West Entrance on the south side of the road in a large dead fir. Look for the large snag supporting a big stick nest near the top approximately 100 yards from the road. Locals claimed that there have been eagles nesting here for well over 50 years. Yellowstone is home to the largest population of trumpeter swans in the Lower 48 states. There are basically two trumpeter swan flocks in Yellowstone, a resident year-round population and a migratory winter population. The resident population can vary from 28-55 swans, whereas the winter population varies from 75-119 swans. Seven miles in from the West Entrance is an area called ‘Seven Mile Bridge.’ Nesting trumpeter swans, soras, herons, and common snipe can all be seen from the turnouts there. Hayden Valley is another location for heron sightings. Migratory birds can be seen including savannah sparrows, ruby-crowned kinglets, yellow-rumped warblers, and mountain bluebirds. Ravens are also fun to watch just for their mischievous antics. Near Fishing Bridge, look for White Pelican and both Barrow's and Common Goldeneye, as well as Bald Eagles and Osprey. Watch for Sandhill Cranes in the Fountain Flats area. Some of the park’s best birding can be found by driving from West Thumb, on Yellowstone Lake, east and north to Tower and west to Mammoth Hot Springs. As you skirt Yellowstone Lake to Fishing Bridge, stop where you can to scan for Common Loon, American White Pelican, Double-crested Cormorant, Trumpeter Swan, Barrow’s Goldeneye, California Gull, and other water birds, as well as Osprey and Bald Eagle. Along the Yellowstone River, watch for the White-throated Swift flying through canyons or the American Dipper among the rocks in the rapids areas. This area is also home to the rare Harlequin Duck. At Mammoth, watch for the Black-billed Magpie, Mountain Bluebird and Townsend's Solitaire. American Dippers should be active along the rushing stream, and with luck you may see a Lazuli Bunting above on the rugged cliffs of McMinn Bench.

The big Madison River bull elk really work their 'harems' along the Madison River meadows. The big bulls push out other spike bulls and constantly herd their cows, even during the afternoons. They demonstrate their dominance by tearing up the ground and small bushes, even staging mock battles.

If you are lucky enough to make it to Beartooth Pass (on the Beartooth Scenic Highway), watch for Peregrine Falcons and Golden Eagles, as well as migrant summer visitors, American Pipits and Black Rosy-finches.

HIKING & BIKING The Gallatin National Forest and Madison Range around West Yellowstone is a hiker’s dream, offering an abundance of hiking and backpacking options on millions of acres of public land. Miles of trails wind past aspen and pine, tranquil meadows and impressive peaks. A highly popular cross country ski trail system in the winter, the Rendezvous Trail System is open to hikers and bikers in the summer. Another trail, used year-round is the Boundary Trail, which is accessed on the north-east end of town and follows along the Park Line. These trails are also dog-friendly during the summer months. A local hiking favorite is the Coffin Lakes trail ending at a pair of high mountain lakes. Nearby Lee Metcalf Wilderness includes the Monument Mountain Unit which borders Yellowstone and is home to spectacular scenery and wildlife. Yellowstone has over 1,100 miles of hiking trails fitting every type, difficulty and length of trail imaginable. The Riverside Trail leaves right from West Yellowstone and follows a mellow trail along the river right into Yellowstone. The hike starts at Uncle Tom’s Trailhead and takes you past the rim of canyon, Artist’s Point, and several lakes. CYCLING INTO YELLOWSTONE PARK Shortly after Yellowstone Park closes to oversnow traffic (March 15th) to the third week in April, some of the roads open for “Cycle-Only Days." Only bikes (no public vehicles) are allowed on roads and there is no admission fee when riding from the West Yellowstone entrance to Mammoth as conditions allow. There are no services available and riders must pack in/pack out all supplies. Please ride single file, carry bear spray, and give a wide berth or turn around when encountering wildlife.

Even after Yellowstone’s roads open to motorized traffic, the cycling in the Park is good. Most of the roads in Yellowstone have a wide enough shoulder to provide safe riding although it is also true that some sections of road have no shoulder. Be aware of motorized vehicles, as visitors can stop unexpectedly for wildlife! The supported "West Yellowstone Old Faithful Cycle Tour" is a terrific way to experience Yellowstone National Park in the fall. See events for more information. MOUNTAIN CYCLING AROUND WEST YELLOWSTONE The Rendezvous Ski Trails provide West Yellowstone’s most popular and easy to access mountain biking. The trailhead is located at the south end of Geyser Street. From here you can access a variety of rolling single tracks that wind through the middle of the ski trails. The trails are great for visitors that haven’t had time to get used to the thin air at 6,600 feet. There are cutoffs throughout the trails system allowing riders to choose short, medium or long distance rides. The Riverside Trail is accessible from the eastern edge of West Yellowstone at the corner of Boundary Street and Madison Avenue. The trail is a little more than a mile each way and is relatively flat. It is a great spot to take younger kids or head to the picnic tables next to the Madison River for a unique lunch spot. There are a limited number of bike trails in Yellowstone National Park. Most are reclaimed roads and more information can be found on the park's website.

For the more ambitious, there are plenty of longer, challenging rides waiting for you outside of town. Tepee Creek to Red Canyon, Coffin Lake, Lion’s Head and Mile Creek are all rides located on US Forest Service land. The Bozeman-Big Sky-West Yellowstone map from Beartooth Publishing highlights a variety of rides and terrain in the area. West Yellowstone is also very close to stretches of the Continental Divide Trail. Although located in Idaho, you will find the Targhee Creek Trail and the Sawtelle Trail easily accessible from West Yellowstone. The TransAmerica Trail, which goes right through West Yellowstone, is consistently used throughout the summer months. The start of our mountain biking season depends largely on how heavy our winter snow pack is come springtime. At lower elevations, it is often June before roads and trails dry out enough to make cycling possible. At higher elevations, we sometimes have to wait until July before we can access the trails. ROAD CYCLING AROUND WEST YELLOWSTONE Outside the Park, a 64-mile loop called “the block” is a popular ride. For those looking for a shorter ride, Highway 287 is a good bet. It’s probably the most scenic and safest section of “the block”. You can park your car at the intersection of Highway 191 and 287 and head out from there. The shoulder is wide enough and there are several scenic pullouts as you travel along the north shore of Hebgen Lake. SNOWMOBILE EXPO POWERSPORTS & RACES For nearly 30 years, West Yellowstone has been ending the winter season with a party on the snow. While EXPO has evolved over the years to reflect the trends in the snowmobile and winter travel industries, it continues to represent what winter in West Yellowstone is all about - snow recreation. The four manufacturers (Arctic Cat, Ski-Doo, Polaris and Yamaha) display their new models in the same location for the first time in the West, giving fans a chance to see, touch and get excited about the new machines, and in some cases even take them out for a demo ride. There are also M120 demo rides for the kids.

It's quite a sight to see snow shaped into a race track for vintage snowmobiles and M120 races, then morphed into a course for UTVs and snow bikes with exciting jumps added in. Snowmobiles are still at the core of the event with vintage shows and racing, and children's M120 and Jr. SnoCross entertaining the spectators. In recent years, snow bikes and utvs have joined the party, adding a thrilling new element to the weekend. Food vendors and exhibitors round out the weekend. West Yellowstone earned the title of America’s “Top Ten Fishing Towns” (Forbes Magazine) for unparalleled year-round fishing. Top blue-ribbon trout streams surround West Yellowstone: the Madison, Gallatin, Yellowstone and the Henrys Fork of the Snake. The upper Madison, the Firehole, and the Gibbon Rivers are just minutes away in Yellowstone. Unbeatable float and deepwater fishing abound on Hebgen Lake and Earthquake Lake, Henrys Lake and Island Park Reservoir. Hebgen Lake, located just nine miles northwest of town, is approximately fifteen miles long and four miles wide. Hebgen Lake is known as one of Montana’s premier stillwater and dry fly fishing fisheries. Several marinas offer docks, as well as convenient boating (including rentals) and fishing supplies. Fishing Hebgen Lake turns into an addiction in August as big rising browns and rainbows (“Gulpers”) in the 2-4lb range consistently hit the surface of the lake chasing the Callibaetis hatch. Many of the fly fishing shops in West Yellowstone offer a package for beginners, complete with equipment and instruction including ‘walk trips’. Beginning and novice fly fishers can quickly learn the fundamentals of fly casting, knot tying, fly selection, line control, reading water and safe wading. Take a day and enjoy the waters of Montana with an experienced guide and make it a trip to remember. Be careful as you may become hooked for life. Float trips are a fun and exciting way to experience the water near West Yellowstone. Float trips allow fisherman to fish more miles of water in a day than you would be able to do on foot. The

spectacular views of the surrounding area and wildlife, are truly a memorable experience for novice or advanced anglers alike. Most local shops offer a wide variety of fishing experiences including full day trips to half day trips, and even some evening guided trips. Most waters in Yellowstone Park are open for fishing from late May to early November, between the hours of 5am and 10pm. A valid Yellowstone National Park fishing license is required for all anglers over 12 years of age. Licenses are available at local fly shops or Yellowstone Park Visitor Centers or ranger stations. Make sure to obtain a regulations book as it contains specific information about restrictions, as well as maps and locations. Regulations are often complex concerning fishing seasons, temporary and/or permanent area closures, tackle restrictions, and species specific number and size limits. The Madison River, both inside and outside Yellowstone Park, is at its prime, along with the Gibbon and Firehole rivers inside the park. You can often find some solitary fishing and match the hatch fishing. Depending on weather conditions you may see Pale Morning Duns, Blue-Winged Olives, or two species of caddis. Fishing isn’t only a summer excursion. Fly fisherman can be seen wading waste deep in the icy waters of the Gallatin and Madison Rivers, and ice fishing is quickly becoming a popular winter experience. Hebgen Lake is becoming an ice fishing destination during the winter months, producing some fine sized rainbow and brown trout.

MADISON RIVER CANYON EARTHQUAKE AREA Leave West Yellowstone on US 20 over the Targhee Pass into Idaho and make a right turn onto Idaho 87. At the next junction you will turn right again onto US 287. The driving adventure begins as you pass through the Madison River Canyon which, in 1959, was struck by one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded on the North American continent. Measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale, the earthquake caused an enormous landslide and sent 80 million tons of rock tumbling into the canyon, obstructing the flow of the Madison River. Today the Madison River Canyon Earthquake Area is of great scientific and general interest. Points of interest include the Visitors Center, Memorial Boulder, Ghost Village and Refuge Point. VIRGINIA AND NEVADA CITIES Virginia City was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The area holds claim to the largest collection of Gold Rush era buildings in the West. Currently 50 standing structures date back to the height of the Gold Rush when nearly 20,000 hardy souls called it home. At its peak, Nevada City boasted dozens of stores and cabins. In 1872, the town had a miner’s store, a brewery, a butcher, a blacksmith, a livery stable and a Masonic 52 West Yellowstone Montana Travel Planner 2018/19

hall. But by 1876, boom turned to bust, and Nevada City became a Ghost Town and currently is the site of many of Montana’s relocated historic buildings. During peak season, take a ride on the Alder Gulch Shortline Railroad that runs between Virginia City and Nevada City. LEWIS & CLARK CAVERNS & THREE FORKS Though Lewis & Clark never saw the caverns, they were discovered in 1892, and are Montana's first and best-known state park. The Caverns showcase one of the most highly decorated limestone caverns in the Northwest. Naturally air conditioned, these spectacular caves, lined with stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and helicitites, date back through time. See the geologic development, the history of early exploration and gain an insight into the delicate ecology of this world without light. Plan to spend a minimum of two hours to hike two miles on a guided tour through the caverns. Visit the Missouri Headwaters State Park where Lewis and Clark had followed the Missouri River hoping to find a route to the Pacific Ocean. Today you can walk in their footsteps and see the convergence of the Jefferson, Gallatin, and Madison Rivers. Then on to Three Forks, and a stop to visit the Headwaters Heritage Museum down town Three Forks. You will want to include a visit to the Madison Buffalo Jump, approximately 6.5 miles south. BIG SPRINGS & JOHNNY SACK CABIN Big Springs is the head waters of the Henry’s Fork of the Snake River. 120 million gallons of water flow from this spring every day making it one of the largest springs in the country. Big Springs is also spawning grounds for rainbow trout. You can feed the fish while you’re there but fishing is not allowed in this protected area. The enormous rainbow trout can be viewed from both sides of the bridge. Be sure to bring some bread to feed the fish, mallard ducks and the resident muskrat. Watch down stream as it is common to see a moose feeding in the water. Then take a short easy walk on the interpretive trail board walk that leads downstream along the Big Springs National Water Trail. On the Historic Register, the Johnny Sack Cabin can be reached via a short, paved walking path starting in the campground at Big Springs. The cabin's unique location, construction, and furnishings provide for an interesting visit. The cabin was started in 1932 and completed three years later. Here you can learn about Johnny Sack, a German cabinet maker and the uniqueness of his craftsmanship. Be careful going in! If you’re tall that is. Johnny Sack was only 4 feet 11 inches tall. While most of the house has typical ceilings, his work area in the basement reflects his small stature.

Falls and if you’re up to it take a 3 mile round trip hike to Bechler Falls or a 3.2 mile hike to Terrace Falls. Be sure to check in at the Bechler Ranger Station to pick up a map and trailhead information. Travel back to West Yellowstone on Idaho 47 or from Ashton on US 20. This trip is best taken after July 1st because part of the route travels on a gravel road that is minimally maintained. TETON SCENIC BYWAY Make a day to visit Grand Teton National Park - a geological “gold mine� of adventure. Take the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway trip to Ashton and on Idaho 32, along the western side of the Teton Range. The mountains sharply contrast with rolling fields of wheat and canola in these agricultural communities as this trip through the backcountry of Idaho takes you to the Teton Scenic Byway. If you have time, travel on Idaho 31 through the beautiful Pine Creek pass to Swan Valley or just continue on Idaho 33. You will then be driving the incredible Teton Pass and drop down into the Jackson Valley with Jackson Hole, Wyoming and on to Grand Teton National Park. The distance from the south entrance of Yellowstone National Park to the south boundary of Grand Teton National Park is 56 miles; approximate driving time with stops is 1-1/2 hours.

MESA FALLS SCENIC BYWAY To reach Mesa Falls Scenic Byway take US 20 from West Yellowstone into Idaho approximately 34 miles. Watch for the Scenic Byway Idaho 47, where it turns left. This Scenic Byway includes the Upper and Lower Mesa Falls. You will arrive at the Upper Falls first where a boardwalk leads from the Historic Big Falls Inn, now the visitor center and gift shop, right to the brink of the Upper Mesa Falls. You will then travel another mile down to the Grandview overlook of Lower Mesa Falls. At 114 feet high for the Upper Mesa Falls and 65 feet high for the Lower Mesa falls they offer equally spectacular views in a beautiful forest setting. CAVE FALLS / BECHLER AREA Cave Falls & Bechler Area is the Hidden Part of Yellowstone that is actually in Idaho. The Bechler region is the “wettest part of Yellowstone. NORDIC SKI What could be better than escaping the confines of office or home to spend a day colored by wintery landscapes and brilliant blue skies? The western corridor of Yellowstone Park and adjoining national forests offer some of the best cross country skiing in Yellowstone Country. The Rendezvous Ski Trails in West Yellowstone, the Riverside Trail leaving from West Yellowstone, and 40 miles of ski trails in the Old Faithful area offer great trails and scenery for skiers of all abilities. The Boundary Trail, which follows the western edge of Yellowstone, is ‘dog-friendly.’ There are also daily snowcoach tours leaving from West

Yellowstone that offer cross-country skier drop-offs and pickups as part of the tour. The Nordic ski season around West Yellowstone can last into the late spring, depending on snow conditions. Many locals like to go North of town to ski on Hebgen Lake, nestled among the mountains, providing some of the most breath-taking views in the valley.

POPULAR TRAILS RENDEZVOUS TRAILS Located at the southwest corner of town, the trail system covers more than 35 km of varied terrain from gently rolling hills to more challenging climbs, descents, and turns. The view is always scenic whether winding through tall stands of lodgepole pine or open meadows embraced by nearby Lionhead Mountain. During the winter season, trails are groomed regularly. A children’s play hill and local telehill are also incorporated into the system. Trail passes are required when between November 1 and March 31. DestinationYellowstone.com

BOUNDARY TRAIL The Boundary Ski and Snowshoe Trail offers 7.9km of trails that parallel Yellowstone Park’s western border. It is also one of the few "pet friendly" trails in Montana. This is also a "free" no fee trail, perfect for families and kids. This easy trail is groomed to accommodate classic cross-country skiers and snowshoers alike. TheTrail can be accessed from Boundary Street, the truck pull-out on Highway 191/287, and Baker's Hole Campground.

RIVERSIDE TRAIL Ski right into Yellowstone National Park, along the Madison River where you could catch a glimpse of bald eagles soaring, frosty bison grazing or a beautiful pair of trumpeter swans swimming by. The Riverside Trail crosses very easy terrain. New skiers can try out the sport and ski to impressive views inside Yellowstone National Park. Locals send families and photographers on this trail frequently. Views include the 10,336-foot Mt. Holmes and the Gallatin Mountain Range. SNOWMOBILE West Yellowstone is undoubtedly a snowmobiler’s paradise. With more than 143 inches of snow annually, and 400 miles of trails through some of the most breathtaking scenery anywhere, it continues to top the list of favorite sledding destinations. The trail system begins right in town, where snowmobilers share city streets with motorists, and onto trails in the Custer-Gallatin, Beaverhead and Targhee National forests. Groomed trails provide access to off-trail powder meadows and more advanced back country riding.

Local businesses provide snowmobile and clothing rentals on a daily or multi-day basis. Snowmobile rentals range from two-up easy riding and trail models to high-powered sleds adapted for mountain and back country riding. Additional equipment, including avalanche beacons and shovels for back country riding can also be rented. National Forest guide service is also available for snowmobilers new to the area, and who want to learn more about the trail system or for back country riding. You can ride this trail out and back, or link

it up with one of the other trails to make a great loop ride. It provides great views of the area's mountains, following creeks and rivers away from the crowds. THE MADISON ARM LOOP located north and west of town, is 20 miles in length. The trail is well maintained and usually provides great wildlife viewing opportunities. And with all-day access, families can drive through time and again.

“On the guided tours, we talk about the personalities and traits of each animal in the park, and, of course, the fascinating hibernation cycles of the bears,” Ferguson says. “It’s also a great photo opportunity because the animals come right up to our guided-tour vehicle where visitors can feed them.” “We opened the park because of my father’s experiences as a child,” Ferguson says. “His family would take trips to Yellowstone, and be fascinated by all the animals and the ‘bear jams” that would clog the road for hours. We wanted to recreate that childhood experience here.” Yellowstone Bear World is located near Rexburg, Idaho, along the southwestern edge of the Yellowstone National Park.
