If Britain owes over £900 billion in National debt and Sally has been on minimum wage for most of her working life with the interest on her debt being equal to her monthly outgoings, then who is more broke, Britain or Sally? Based on interviews taken across the UK in 2014, multi-award winners The Paper Birds explore, with real life stories from the front line of poverty and debt, what it means to be broke in this visually stunning new production. A heartfelt and urgent look at the debt of a Nation from displaced families and gambling addictions to beans on toast. “I was doing something nobody had done before, and if you’re the first to do something, you have to be prepared to take the sh*t for it.” On the eve of one of the most important games of his career, Welsh rugby legend Gareth Thomas received a warning: The Sun newspaper was going to "out" him as gay. This is the story of two Welsh names bruised, but not beaten, by media speculation; Gareth Thomas, 105 caps for Wales, now the world’s most prominent gay sportsman; and his hometown, Bridgend. Working with Gareth himself, and young people in Bridgend, two of the UK’s most exciting theatre companies—National Theatre Wales and Out of Joint—have teamed up to tell a great story about sport, politics, secrets, life and what it’s all about. King Lear is the story of a family at war with itself. Lear, an aging and deeply flawed individual, wrecks his relationship with his three daughters and in doing so, loses all he has. What is there left? This question, which is Lear’s predicament and Shakespeare’s genius, invites us all to think upon what we might gain when nothing is all we have. If you’ve seen King Lear before, forget everything you know as Jonathan Miller brings his remarkable talent for detailed human observation to the play. Be prepared for a ‘Lear’ stripped back to its heart and soul; intimate, moving and utterly believable. This is Miller’s second collaboration with the multi award-winning Northern Broadsides; a company whose trademark vigour, simplicity and down-to-earth performance style has won over a whole new generation of Shakespeare fans. We commission, produce and create extraordinary work right here in the heart of our city. This spring we delight in the discovery of Zodwa Nyoni, an impressive, passionate new voice in Yorkshire’s cultural landscape. Her new play Boi Boi is Dead, set in her birth place Zimbabwe, explores the clashes of old and new generations. Associate Director Mark Rosenblatt is working with playwright Samuel Adamson (whose writing includes The Light Princess for the National Theatre) exploring Chekhov’s Russian classic, the darkly-funny Uncle Vanya, for a 21st century audience. We cement our partnership with Royal Exchange Theatre as the Courtyard becomes our own theatre-in-the-round. A coproduction of Tolstoy’s epic Russian love story Anna Karenina is juxtaposed with The Rolling Stone, a new play set in the heart of Uganda exploring the courage needed when one man loves another. It’s also thrilling to examine work much closer to home and we’re excited that we can re-stage Maxine Peake’s critically successful and sold-out show Beryl and take a new look at Jim Cartwright’s brilliantly funny Olivier Award-winning comedy The Rise and Fall of Little Voice set against the stark backdrop of northern working class Britain.
We invite local and international artists to take part in Transform 15. This year it’s changing, join us on the journey to help shape its future. Our second community tour Little Sure Shot will hit the road this summer, aimed at families and children and set in the Wild West of America in the early 20th Century. We continue to take ground-breaking steps in the creation of innovative outreach and education work as we open up the world of culture for people living with dementia and for young people at our award-winning First Floor. As a Theatre of Sanctuary we take inspiration from some truly remarkable people from across the world who have made Leeds their home and remain a place of hospitality, understanding, safety and welcome for them. It’s a big wonderful world; explore it with us. James Brining & Sheena Wrigley

From the novel by Leo Tolstoy Adaptation by Jo Clifford 9 May– 13 June £28–£12 Courtyard Theatre 7.45pm plus matinees
'I think… I think there are as many different kinds of love as there are different hearts.' Anna is the envy of St. Petersburg society. Glamorous and admired, but locked in a loveless marriage, her sudden and passionate love affair with Count Vronsky turns her world on its head and puts at risk everything she has ever known. In a parallel story, spurned by the woman he loves, Levin turns his back on wealthy society and heads for his country estate, determined to refashion it into a vision of a fairer world. Tolstoy’s masterpiece casts these two stories about our purpose in the world against the epic backdrop of Imperial Russia. Olivier-nominated director Ellen McDougall makes her Playhouse and Royal Exchange Theatre debut with this stripped-back and contemporary version of one of the greatest novels ever written. Building on Heydays—our long-running and dynamic creative programme for older people—this season we launch Our Time, a new programme of stimulating arts sessions for people living with dementia and their families. ‘People think we just sit in a chair all day and go to sleep. If they knew all the things we do then maybe other people would think you can do these things when you’ve got dementia’. Our Youth Theatre is now in its third year and we’ve recently introduced new classes for 8 to 10 year olds. This season sees the fruition of our second new commission for young people. Playwright Oladipo Agboluaje has been workshopping ideas with Youth Theatre members, who will perform the new show Love, Me as part of Open Season in July.
Our fantastically fun and inspirational project Primary Players, which explores Shakespeare with 7 to 11 year olds, is back and engaging with more schools than ever before. The project will culminate in a unique performance on the Quarry stage during Open Season in July. ‘It provided a unique and absolutely unforgettable experience for every child in the class…’ Just around the corner from the Playhouse, First Floor, our venue just for 11 to 19s or 14 to 25s with a learning disability, is open 6 days a week offering a wealth of opportunities for young people across the city.
