mong our very exciting offerings this month, WETA presents a dynamic performance program, Billy Joel: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize, which honors the singer-songwriter and features him and an array of guests performing his music. We are delighted to bring to a national audience this special WETA production, which we taped in November at DAR Constitution Hall. Find details below on this page. Of special note as well this month is the program An Evening with Gwen Ifill, featuring an engaging interview with our WETA colleague about her life and distinguished career in journalism. WETA also has a veritable feast of superb drama programs in store for you in January, including, of course, Season 5 of Masterpiece blockbuster Downton Abbey, which airs on WETA TV 26/WETA HD — and on WETA UK — after a Season 4 catch-up. The new episodes of the top drama in public television history are riveting! We are also excited to bring you the epic 1984 story of the British Raj, The Jewel in the Crown, and (on WETA UK only) the grand 1977 series Poldark, sometimes referred to as Britain’s “Gone with the Wind.” These classics remain among Masterpiece’s most memorable presentations. Billy Joel: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize

ETA presents to a nationwide PBS audience a new star-studded music special honoring singer-songwriter and pianist Billy Joel’s receipt of the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. The 90-minute performance program Billy Joel: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize is a production of WETA in association with Bounce, a division of AEG. The award ceremony and concert, taped November 19 at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, features Joel accepting the Prize and performing some of his best-known songs. Also performing are Tony Bennett, R&B vocal group Boyz II Men, Gavin DeGraw, Josh Groban, Natalie Maines, John Mellencamp and LeAnn Rimes. The evening of celebration and music also features a special performance by Kevin Spacey — as well as dance from Twyla Tharp’s Broadway production “Movin’ Out,” based on Joel’s music. Additionally, entertainer Michael Feinstein pays tribute to the legacy of George and Ira Gershwin, for whom the Prize is named. During the event, Joel was presented the Gershwin Prize by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor; U.S. legislators; and Dr. James H. Billington, the Librarian of Congress. Joel is one of the most successful recording artists and popular entertainers in the world. His works include many classics in a rich catalog of music created during a career spanning more than 50 years. Joel was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1992 and into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1999; he received the 36th Annual Kennedy Center Honor in 2013. WETA has produced The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for PBS since the creation of the award in 2007. Honorees include Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Sir Paul McCartney, Burt Bacharach and Hal David, and Carole King. Funding for the program is provided by the Anne Ray Charitable Trust and AARP. Major funding is provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, PBS and public television viewers. Air transportation is generously provided by United Airlines.

ETA features entertaining mystery dramas throughout January on Thursday and Sunday nights. On Thursday nights, WETA airs the first episodes of the popular Inspector Morse spin-off series Lewis (which aired on Masterpiece as Inspector Lewis). The contemporary mysteries star Kevin Whately as the working-class Oxford police detective and Laurence Fox as his cerebral sidekick, Hathaway. After the first episode at 9:30 p.m. on January 1, episodes air each week in double features at 9 p.m. On Thursdays at 8 p.m. beginning January 8, WETA reprises Series 1 of the acclaimed Australian drama Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, starring Essie Davis as Melbourne sleuth Phryne Fisher. Set in the 1920s, the stylish, beautifully costumed drama follows Masterpiece Mystery!: the investigations of the thoroughly modern woman, who goes about her work with a Grantchester pistol close at hand — and, more often than not, a male admirer even closer. Also this month, a new Masterpiece Mystery! series, Grantchester, begins Sunday, January 18 at 10 p.m. The six-part drama stars James Norton as Sidney Chambers, a charismatic young vicar who turns amateur investigator in his parish. Aiding Chambers in the beautiful hamlet of Grantchester is gruff, down-to-earth police inspector Geordie Keating (Robson Green, of Reckless). Set in 1953, the mysteries are based on the novels of James Runcie.

The Great British Baking Show

smash hit series in the U.K. comes to public television as The Great British Baking Show follows the trials and tribulations of a group of passionate amateur bakers, each of whom is seeking to be named the U.K.’s best. Each week, the bakers tackle a different skill, the difficulty of which increases as the competition unfolds. Mary Berry, a leading cookbook writer and Britain’s “doyenne of baking,” and Paul Hollywood, one of Britain’s top artisan bakers, serve as judges. Together with hosts and comic foils Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc, Berry and Hollywood search for the country’s best amateur baker by testing the contestants’ skills on cakes, breads, pastries and desserts, crowning a winner after weeks of competition. The programs present the BBC’s critically acclaimed recent fifth season of the U.K. series, noted for its essential generosity and good-heartedness in the competition. The Great British Baking Show also airs on WETA UK, Sundays at 8 p.m.

new season of occasional series Genealogy Roadshow follows a diverse cast of participants on a journey of discovery that uses history and science to uncover their intriguing family stories. Each individual and family’s past links to a larger community history, revealing the rich cultural tapestry of the nation. This season, the seven-part series, airing January 13–February 24, features participants (such as Cherise Harrison-Nelson and family, above with host Kenyatta Berry on right) from three American cities — St. Louis, New Orleans and Philadelphia — seeking to explore a variety of genealogical mysteries such as unverified genealogical claims, hidden secrets, connections to events or historical figures, ethnic heritage, lost history and much more. Genealogists, historians and DNA experts help with the detective work.

istory series American Experience spotlights entertainer Roy Robert Ripley and genius inventor Thomas Alva Edison in two documentaries airing this month. Ripley: Believe It or Not, airing January 6, chronicles the transformation during the Great Depression of a skinny, bucktoothed boy into an entertainer who mesmerized the nation with his razzle-dazzle blend of homespun Americana, colorful exotica and freakish oddities. Over three decades, Ripley’s “Believe It or Not!” franchise grew into an entertainment empire, making the impresario one of the richest men in the country. The two-hour special Edison, airing January 20, explores the life and work of the inventor and businessman (1847–1931), holder of 1,093 U.S. patents. Edison’s name has become synonymous with innovation, and today he is remembered for developing the technology that made the modern world. Among the prolific achievements of “The Wizard of Menlo Park” were sound recording, motion pictures and electric light.

he top drama in PBS history returns this month, as Masterpiece series Downton Abbey begins an epic fifth season of intimately interlaced storylines centered on the noble English Crawley family and its servants at a fictional Yorkshire country estate. The series, which has garnered a host of honors, including 10 Emmy Awards, drew an average audience of more than 13 million viewers for Season 4, making Downton Abbey one of the highest-rated dramas now on American television. For those in need of catching up, leading into the first of the Season 5 new episodes, WETA reprises the entire previous season on January 4 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on WETA TV 26 and WETA HD. The new season premieres over the course of nine Sundays, beginning January 4 at 9 p.m. on WETA TV 26 and WETA HD (and after the lead episode on January 4, tune in as well for the Masterpiece special The Manners of Downton Abbey). Note that WETA repeats each Season 5 episode at 8 p.m. on the following Sunday just before the next new episode rolls out. With all the secrets currently percolating in the plot, Season 5 has more twists in store, more drama, romance and comic moments, all set against the backdrop of major historical events of the era. Season 5 follows threads left dangling from last season, including Lady Mary’s courtship contest, Lady Edith’s trials as a secret single mom, Thomas’s scheming against Bates and Baxter, Robert’s battles against modernity, Tom’s quest to be true to his ideals, Violet’s one-line zingers, and more. The new episodes feature the familiar stellar cast that brings to life the characters fans have come to know and love. The acclaimed ensemble is joined in Season 5 by guest stars Harriet Walter (Lady Shackleton) and Peter Egan (Lord Flintshire), together with entirely new characters played by Richard E. Grant, Anna Chancellor and Rade Sherbedgia. One of the recurring themes of Downton Abbey is change, such as the consequences of the Titanic disaster in Season 1 and the notorious automobile accident at the end of Season 3 — in addition to World War I; women’s rights; and the new morals, inventions, and fashions of the 1920s, which is where Season 5 kicks off. It’s 1924. The United Kingdom has its first Labor Party prime minister. The radio is the latest miracle of the age, and Downton’s traditional ways are besieged on all fronts, brought to a fine point in an exchange between the head housekeeper, Mrs. Hughes, and the butler, Mr. Carson: “We’re catching up, Mr. Carson. Whether you like it or not, Downton is catching up with the times we live in,” says the forward-thinking Hughes. “That’s exactly what I’m afraid of!” the butler retorts. For those afraid that March 1 might herald the end of the series, fear not. The sixth season of Downton Abbey goes into production in 2015, once again written by series creator Julian Fellowes.

he American/Canadian children’s series Wild Kratts, developed for 6- to 8-year-old viewers, demonstrates that animals can offer an entrée to science as program creators Chris and Martin Kratt present extraordinary animal-themed adventures for young viewers. The show transforms the Kratt Brothers, creators of the award-winning Kratts’ Creatures and Emmywinning Zoboomafoo, into animated versions of themselves, allowing the two real-life zoologists to visit wild animals in their little-seen habitats and showcase key science concepts along the way. From elephants using physics to suck gallons of water with their trunks to a fleet of peregrine falcons that harnesses the force of gravity to speed through the air, each half-hour episode of Wild Kratts presents age-appropriate science inspired by the natural abilities of the animals that the Kratts — and young viewers — meet. The series is a co-production of The Kratt Brothers Company and 9 Story Media Group.

ased on Paul Scott’s four epic novels known as the “Raj Quartet,” this popular miniseries, first broadcast in the United States in 1984 on Masterpiece and considered one of the top dramas in that series’ history, is set during the twilight of the British Raj in India during World War II. Winner of a Golden Globe, an International Emmy, and a host of other awards when it premiered, The Jewel in the Crown is a study of British culture abroad, capturing two distinct class systems — British and Indian. The production is set in India when the country was still the empire’s “jewel,” opening in 1942 when Gandhi was telling the British to “Quit India” and the Japanese were threatening to invade. The miniseries, now remastered and in HD for the first time, features a stellar cast that includes Dame Peggy Ashcroft, Charles Dance and Geraldine James (above), Judy Parfitt, Art Malik, Susan Wooldridge and Tim Pigott-Smith.

he sweeping, swashbuckling, romantic saga Poldark, a 1970s BBC blockbuster that is now remembered as a classic, begins airing on WETA UK this month. Based on the novels by Winston Graham and set against the backdrop of the rugged, beautiful Cornish coast, the drama tells the story of a dashing 18th-century English army officer, played by Robin Ellis, and his ever-changing fortunes. In Series 1, a wounded Ross returns from the American Revolution after a brave escape from a French prison camp. He finds his father dead, the woman he loves, Elizabeth (Jill Townsend), engaged to another man, and a viperous businessman eager to drive his family from their land. Hailed as a British “Gone with the Wind,” the miniseries debuted on Masterpiece Theatre in May 1977 and became wildly popular. Stay tuned — a new adaptation of Poldark is coming to Masterpiece this year.

Along with her devoted confidant-chauffeur George Moody (Neil Dudgeon, who succeeded John Nettles in the Midsomer Murders lead role), Rigg’s Mrs. B uses her prodigious charm, wit and powers of deduction to dissect motives, mysteries and murder. The stylish BBC series, deco throughout, is based on the character created by detective novelist Gladys Mitchell.

he start of a new year demands, if nothing else, an opportunity to cleanse the palate of holiday excess. We do precisely that with our first program of 2015 as Classical WETA’s local concert broadcast Front Row Washington presents the iconic Brazilian guitarist Odair Assad on Monday, January 5 at 9 p.m. Mr. Assad’s Phillips Collection recital offers everything you might expect from an artist who has performed in concert for more than forty years, often with his brother Sérgio, as the Assad Duo. Seminal composers of South America are represented in Odair Assad’s recital, which features works by Villa-Lobos, Piazzolla and Mangoré, as well as a piece by Cuban composer Leo Brouwer. A new year also demands new music, in this case presented side-by-side with J.S. Bach: on Monday, January 12, Finnish violinist Pekka Kuusisto and American composer/pianist Nico Muhly team up for a fascinating mix of works by Arvo Pärt, Phillip Glass and Muhly himself, each preceded by a movement from Bach’s famous Partita No. 2 for solo violin in D minor in a Phillips Collection recital. Then, on Monday, January 19, the Grammy-winning Parker String Quartet performs works by Britten and Dvoˇrák, and, in honor of Mozart Month on Classical WETA, Mozart’s String Quartet No. 23 in F Major, K. 590 in a Barns of Wolf Trap recital. Finally, on the Monday, January 26 broadcast, Israeli-born pianist Benjamin Hochman, 2011 winner of the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, plays Schubert’s grand Sonata in D Major, D. 850 among other works in his Phillips Collection recital. All in all, something for everyone to start off the New Year on Front Row Washington, each Monday night at 9 p.m. on Classical WETA 90.9 FM.

Mozart and More on Choral Showcase Sundays at 9 p.m.

lassical WETA’s Mozart birthday observance this month extends to Choral Showcase, and the big Mozart works we’re playing also point us toward intriguing (non-Mozart) pieces that are related. At Mozart’s death, his Requiem was incomplete. Most of the famous mysteries about the piece, including who commissioned it (and how and why), have been resolved, but the debate over who did the best job finishing the piece lingers to this day. We’re not going to try to resolve the prickly issue, but will air for your consideration the original completion by Franz Süssmayr, who knew Mozart and was the only Requiem completer to have had experiMozart

The “Coronation” nickname was added some years after the composer’s death as the piece became a preferred work for big events at the Imperial Court at Vienna.

ozart’s ebullient Haffner Symphony is a great way to help kick off Mozart Month on Classical WETA 90.9 FM! From this joyous music to Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique Symphony, Classical WETA’s January broadcast of NSO Showcase — on Wednesday, January 7 — is a bit of an emotional rollercoaster. And speaking of wild rides, the exciting American pianist, Tzimon Barto, will treat us to a fine display of virtuosity in Bartók’s Second Piano Concerto. Christoph Eschenbach conPianist Tzimon Barto ducts the National Symphony Orchestra in these three works, which were recorded at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for broadcast on Classical WETA. In 1782, Mozart’s Salzburg friend Sigmund Haffner was awarded a title of nobility, and he wanted his old buddy to supply some music for the occasion. Mozart, in Vienna, was planning his own wedding, and was, as he put it, “up to my eyes in work.” Nevertheless, Mozart sent off the music to Salzburg and promptly forgot about it. The following year, he needed a new piece for an upcoming concert in Vienna and revisited the Haffner music. “My new Haffner Symphony has positively amazed me, for I had forgotten every single note of it,” he wrote his father. “It must surely produce a good effect.” And with a tweak or two, it was indeed a hit in Vienna, greatly pleasing the Emperor himself — “how he applauded me!” Mozart boasted. As for Sigmund Haffner, he received something far more lasting than an aristocratic title. Not only did Mozart write some very nice music for him, but he also immortalized his name in the Haffner Symphony — Symphony No. 35 in D Major, K 385. Mozart wanted the Haffner Symphony to be “played with great fire” and the finale “as fast as possible.” Béla Bartók’s Piano Concerto No.2 in G Major also requires pyrotechnics and breakneck speed. He wrote it to show off his own phenomenal virtuosity, and as a result, the concerto is a minefield for the soloist. Fortunately, the dynamic, bodybuilding, polyglot (seven languages!), brilliant Florida-born pianist Tzimon Barto, an Eschenbach “discovery,” is more than up to Bartók’s challenging concerto. After the athleticism of Bartók’s Concerto and Barto’s performance, the January broadcast of NSO Showcase ends with the soul-baring drama of Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique Symphony — Symphony No.6 in B Minor, Op.74. Tchaikovsky’s last symphony wasn’t successful at its premiere, which took place just a week before the composer’s sudden and mysterious death. Soon afterward, though, it was hailed as a masterpiece. Notes found among Tchaikovsky’s papers reveal a possible “program” or story for each movement of the symphony, concluding with an eerie premonition of “death — the result of collapse” in the finale. At one point Tchaikovsky even considered the subtitle “Tragic” for the symphony, but his brother Modeste preferred “Pathétique.” “Splendid, Modi, bravo,” Tchaikovsky told him, “Pathétique it shall be.” Don’t miss what promises to be a splendid concert; join us for the first NSO Showcase of the year on Classical WETA.
