ver the years, Americans have been reminded of the importance of bringing science and explorations of the natural world to young people to inspire them to delve further into these fascinating realms and to spark their curiosity in further inquiry. At WETA Television, science and nature program genres are integral to the educational offerings we present on the air. From NOVA and Nature to documentary films and science specials, we offer a window on the world, and our children’s programs help introduce our youngest viewers to science concepts and nature. These broadcasts have long been a vital part of WETA’s service to the public in Greater Washington, dating back to our very first production, the 1958 series Time for Science. See pages 2–3 for a look at WETA’s science and nature programming, past and present. This month, tune in to WETA TV 26 and WETA HD on Wednesdays for Nature — and for the special four-part NOVA miniseries The Fabric of the Cosmos, followed by the reprised NOVA miniseries The Elegant Universe. These NOVA films explore intriguing concepts in physics surrounding space, time, our universe and forces in nature. In other programming, we present two new WETA productions: America in Primetime, an engaging cultural exploration of the evolution of character archetypes in popular primetime television, and Country Music: In Performance at the White House, which celebrates iconic country songs with a host of top musical artists. Country Music: In Performance at the White House The WETA production airs Wednesday, November 23 at 8 p.m. and repeats Sunday, November 27 at 7 p.m. on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD

he latest production — the 47th — in WETA’s long-running arts series In Performance at the White House features a special concert celebrating iconic country music with an all-star lineup of top musical artists performing at the White House for the President and Mrs. Obama. The performance will be taped in the East Room of the White House this month and broadcast November 23 on PBS stations nationwide. WETA has collaborated with every administration since President Carter’s to showcase America’s performing arts, and Country Music is the seventh collaboration with the White House during President Obama’s administration.

In the Spotlight new WETA miniseries explores how America’s greatest primetime television dramas and sitcoms have served as a lens on American society, showcasing this iconic American art form that has both reflected and shaped our national character. The four-part documentary — which premieres October 30 — is a production of WETA and The Documentary Group in association with the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation. America in Primetime explores some of the most compelling shows on television today, and their roots in programs from the past (such as The Dick Van Dyke Show, above), by focusing on key character archetypes — the independent woman, the man of the house, the misfit and the crusader — that have remained a staple of primetime through the generations, capturing both the continuity of the character and its evolution. The production features more than 100 in-depth interviews with the creators, writers and actors — from Eva Longoria to Alec Baldwin, Norman Lear to Carl Reiner, Alan Alda to Candice Bergen — who give life to the characters that have so resonated with television audiences. Funding for America in Primetime is provided by Dove, a Unilever brand; the Annenberg Foundation; the Corporation for Public Broadcasting; and PBS.

asterpiece presents two contemporary dramas in November featuring stars of the big screen. Page Eight (November 6), a two-hour intrigue about an aging spy who stumbles on an international scandal that could bring down the British government, stars Bill Nighy, Michael Gambon, Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz. The Song of Lunch (November 13), an hour-long, funny, bittersweet drama — adapted from Christopher Reid’s poem — eavesdrops on two ex-lovers who meet for lunch at their favorite haunt from years before. The Best in Science T

hroughout its 50 years on the air, WETA TV 26 has presented a wide diversity of programming, and among the station’s important educational offerings have been science and nature productions that explore our world, spark curiosity and inspire awe and fascination in viewers of all ages. In fact, WETA’s very first production was in this genre — the series Time for Science was created for area students and hosted by local instructor Darrell Drummond. Since those early days a half century ago, the genius of the science and nature programming that WETA broadcasts has been that it makes complex ideas accessible. From illuminations of innumerable creatures of the animal kingdom to explanations of the latest theories in astrophysics, from explorations of habitats to studies of human origins and DNA, these programming genres have spotlighted a vast array of topics with compelling narratives and gorgeous imagery.

Memorable Programs Beyond Time for Science and other early local educational productions, WETA also has created science and nature programs in the station’s national production portfolio. Memorable WETA productions have included mid-1990s collaborations with National Geographic (such as Reflections on Elephants, Jewels of the Caribbean Sea, Island of the Giant Bears, The Heart

of Africa); the 1995 miniseries Mystery of the Senses; the 1998 miniseries Cancer Wars, exploring cancer research and therapies; the mid-2000s series Rough Science, featuring scientists using their ingenuity in the field; and the 2009 special Anatomy of a Pandemic, spotlighting the H1N1 virus. WETA has also broadcast an array of PBS science and nature specials and series, long a staple of each month’s program schedule — alongside other program acquisitions. The science series NOVA and natural history series Nature have been public television’s marquee programs in these genres. These acclaimed series, on the air since 1974 and 1981, respectively, have collectively presented hundreds of productions, reaping every major television industry award many times over.

Charismatic Hosts Of course, bringing complex concepts to life and illuminating the natural world is no easy task — and those notable personalities who have excelled at making ideas comprehensible and engaging have become television icons. Among the memorable people in the long history of WETA’s science and nature broadcasts have been David Garroway, who produced the astronomy series Exploring the Universe during the early 1960s; Jacob Bronowski, who hosted the 1974 series The Ascent of Man; astronomer and astrophysicist Carl Sagan in his groundbreaking 1980 series Cosmos; historian David McCullough in Smithsonian World, which premiered in 1984 and which WETA

co-produced for six seasons; James Burke, whose 1986 series The Day the Universe Changed spotlighted advances in science and technology; Alan Alda, who hosted Scientific American Frontiers for more than a decade beginning in 1993; physicist Stephen Hawking in the 1997 miniseries Stephen Hawking’s Universe; and more recently, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, formerly of science magazine NOVA scienceNOW. In the realm of natural history, WETA has aired many productions by the BBC’s Sir David Attenborough, who with his film unit over many decades has created an astonishing output of popular series and specials such as The Life of Birds. In primatology, Jane Goodall brought her studies to public television in films such as the 1984 production Among the Wild Chimpanzees. In the seas, mariner-naturalist Jacques Cousteau brought viewers his Odyssey series from 1977 to 1981 — and later his son Jean-Michel Cousteau, in his 2006 series Ocean Adventures, spotlighted denizens of the deep and their habitat. Currently, WETA presents science and nature programming each Wednesday night on WETA TV 26 and WETA HD as an important part of the station’s ongoing public service to the community of Greater Washington. And WETA also airs engaging, entertaining productions in these genres on the WETA Kids channel for young viewers. Children’s series such as Sid the Science Kid, SciGirls, Wild Kratts, Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies and Dinosaur Train inspire interest in science and the natural world. NOVA: The Fabric of the Cosmos

airs Wednesdays, November 2, 9, 16 & 23 at 9 p.m.

n a new NOVA miniseries that makes complex science accessible, acclaimed physicist and host Brian Greene explores how much of what we know about our universe — that the past has already happened and the future is yet to be, that space is just an empty void, that our universe is the only universe that exists — just might be wrong. The four-part NOVA production The Fabric of the Cosmos explores the frontiers of physics to see how scientists are piecing together the most complete picture yet of space, time and the universe. The hour-long programs air on consecutive Wednesdays, presenting big ideas: how empty space is actually full (November 2); what time really is (November 9); quantum theory that exposes a hidden world beneath the one we perceive (November 16); and why other universes may exist (November 23). Based on Greene’s best-selling book, the programs are visually compelling and feature an entertaining presentation of modern physics — interweaving provocative theories, experiments, and stories with clear explanations and imaginative metaphors, as well as state-of-the-art computer graphics. Tune in after The Fabric of the Cosmos on Wednesdays, November 2, 9 and 16 for the reprised 2003 NOVA miniseries The Elegant Universe, also featuring Brian Greene. That production explores physicists’ “string theory” — a revolutionary approach to a unified understanding of nature’s forces. Funding for NOVA is provided by David H. Koch, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and public television viewers. Major funding for The Fabric of the Cosmos is provided by the National Science Foundation and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. fter 47 years as artistic director of The Choral Arts Society of Washington, Norman Scribner conducts his final concert season this year, at the helm of the symphonic chorus he founded nearly five decades ago. Scribner has announced that he will retire in 2012. In honor of Maestro Scribner’s The Choral Arts Society of Washington legacy and continuing contribution to the musical landscape of Greater Washington, Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s weekly program Front Row Washington presents a special broadcast, Choral Music 101, A Guided Tour Through Norman’s Choral Playlist. This special concert, recorded November 14, 2010 at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall in Alexandria, Virginia, offers a virtual tour through nine centuries of choral Norman Scribner music. From 11th-century plainsong to a motet by William Byrd, from Monteverdi’s 1610 Vespers to Bach’s B minor Mass, from Haydn (Agnus Dei), Beethoven (Agnus Dei), Brahms (Lebeslieder Walzer) and Wagner (Tannhäuser Pilgrim’s Chorus) to Stravinsky (Mass), Carl Orff (from Carmina Burana) and Morten Lauridsen (from Lux Aeterna), listeners can experience the transformation of music composition from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. The performance was co-hosted from the stage by Norman Scribner and Classical WETA’s Deborah Jane Lamberton. In November, Classical WETA Opera House — airing Saturdays at 1 p.m. — presents more performances by Washington National opera in the Kennedy Center opera House: November 5, Verdi’s Rigoletto; November 12, Handel’s Tamerlano, with David Daniels and plácido Domingo; and November 19, Strauss’s Elektra. arking the 600th anniversary of the birth of heroine and saint Joan of Arc (in about 1412) and anticipating the performances on November 17–18 by the Baltimore Symphony and assisting singers under the baton of music director Marin Alsop, Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s Sunday night broadcast Choral Showcase airs Arthur Honegger’s semi-staged oratorio Joan of Arc at the Stake on November 6. The BSO performance, to be repeated at Carnegie Hall on November 19, is the centerpiece of their season-long celebration of revolutionary women. The recording featured on Choral Showcase is a Czech performance conducted by Serge Baudo. Honegger used some modern sounds in the piece, including parts for saxophone, but also used music from Joan of Arc’s own time, including folk songs and plainchant.

Classical WETA will post an online list of more than 200 classical works and invites listeners to vote for their favorite three pieces of music. The “polls” are open November 7–14 for one week and once votes are tallied, the top 90 pieces will be played November 21–24, counting down to the top piece, which airs at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day.
