For 2020 productions, WETA and PBS NewsHour were recently recognized with four George Foster Peabody Awards, the highly respected and much-coveted honor that is the gold standard in the television, radio and online media industry. • PBS NewsHour’s ’s Anchor and Managing Editor Judy Woodruff was honored with the first-ever Peabody Award for Journalistic Integrity. The award recognizes the sustained achievement of the highest professional standards of journalism, as well as personal integrity in reporting the news in challenging times. • The PBS NewsHour reporting team was recognized with two Peabody Awards, a demonstration of how critical our news operation is to American public life. This award-winning work is representative of the NewsHour’s many remarkable journalistic projects of the past year and is indicative of the depth and breadth of our coverage: A Peabody was bestowed for PBS NewsHour’s detailed COVID-19 reporting — in particular for its global dispatches and its economic reporting as part of “Making Sense: The Victims of the COVID Economy.” This award was the only Peabody for 2020 news coverage of the pandemic, and PBS NewsHour was lauded for “the best news coverage on COVID-19 last year.” A Peabody was awarded to PBS NewsHour for the extraordinary report “Desperate Journey,” which spotlighted the challenges faced by migrants and refugees in navigating the Darién Gap, which spans the Colombia-Panama border. • The five-part 2020 documentary series Asian Americans — a WETA co-production chronicling the Asian American story in the United States — was recognized with a Peabody and described as “revelatory storytelling.” WETA documentary content offers a critical contribution to our society as Americans seek to better understand diverse experience in our country and our collective history as a people. I congratulate my dedicated colleagues on earning these awards. WETA and PBS NewsHour staff strive each day to produce and present content of true consequence and excellence. Our impressive productions and expansive portfolio continue to stand out in the media landscape, and we are very proud to produce high-quality programming in service to viewers in the community of Greater Washington and around the nation. McEwan’s Marple, sprightly and mischievous, watches, listens, knits and ultimately cracks the case before everyone else. The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross

xplore the full trajectory of African American history, from the origins of slavery on the African continent through five centuries of remarkable historic events, in a critically acclaimed 2013 series from distinguished Harvard scholar and WETA production partner Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Presented and written by Gates, and epic in scope, the six-part production journeys across two continents and draws on insights from some of America’s top historians and an array of previously untapped primary sources. The African Americans chronicles the evolution of the African American people and the multiplicity of cultural institutions, political strategies, and religious and social perspectives they developed as they forged their own history, culture and society. The film was honored with a Peabody Award, Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Award, and NAACP Image Award. Interviewees in the programs include school integration pioneers Ruby Bridges (above, with Gates) and Charlayne Hunter-Gault; the late Congressman John Lewis; former Black Panther Kathleen Cleaver; civil rights activist Diane Nash; and former Secretary of State Colin Powell.

mong the victims of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 were more than 100 expectant fathers, and two decades later, their children are coming of age. As the 20-year anniversary of the September 11 attacks approaches, explore the impact of the tragedy through a new documentary that examines the legacy of 9/11 in a very personal way, relating the stories of seven children who lost their fathers that day. Generation 9/11 reveals how an entire generation was shaped by the tragedy and its aftermath: born at the dawn of the 21st century, they landed in a world where the 9/11 attacks initially drew the nation together. But by the time they entered high school, America was more divided than ever. Now entering adulthood, they carry a new sense of responsibility. Following its protagonists on their personal journey, the film examines what happened to this unique group and their families in the 20 years following al-Qaeda’s attacks. Weaving together shared chapters in the children’s lives, the film also provides a lens through which to look at the broader world during the last two tumultuous decades. The subjects include Ronald Milam, Jr. and Luke Taylor, whose fathers worked at the Pentagon.

ased on James Herriot’s beloved books about a rural veterinary practice in England, the 2021 adaptation All Creatures Great and Small on Masterpiece was the feel-good hit series of last winter. Now enjoy a new special that goes behind the scenes of the popular series and its storyline to explore the warmth, down-to-earth wit and generosity of spirit that infused Herriot’s iconic characters and novels. Savor the best moments from the series, and get to know its cast and creators as they provide insights and reflections on this life-affirming story. The special remembers Dame Diana Rigg in her final role; explores what it’s like to work with the animals; revisits the love triangle on the show; and tours the set of the sweeping drama. The program also looks ahead to what might happen in Season Two in the Yorkshire Dales. The program repeats August 17 at 11:30 p.m. and August 22 at 3:30 p.m.

he series Classic Albums, a British documentary production that celebrates the making of the greatest albums in pop and rock music, this month focuses on the story of the creation of Pink Floyd’s 1973 classic The Dark Side of the Moon — told by the band members who created it. The album claimed a place in the world’s record books, selling more than 30 million copies and remaining on the charts longer than any of its closest competitors — more than 14 years in total. It transformed the band into global rock superstars. The documentary takes a track-by-track look at the making of the album. All the members of the band — Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright — are featured in exclusive interviews and several play songs and demonstrate themes, while original engineer Alan Parsons provides insight into this classic album’s musical fabric. The program airs after the 9 p.m. Friday photography series Icon: Music Through the Lens, which on August 6 explores how music magazines played a pivotal role in elevating music photography to iconic status.

Nature: Pandas: Born to Be Wild

Wednesday, August 18 at 8 p.m. on WETA PBS

he Giant Panda may be one of the most recognizable endangered species on our planet, but the daily lives of wild pandas have remained a mystery, until now. In this 2020 Nature presentation, filmed over three years, two cinematographers trek through the steep forested trails of China’s Qinling Mountains to catch a glimpse of wild pandas. With the help of scientists and rangers on the journey, they capture startling new wild panda behavior on screen. Unlike the playful image of captive pandas, wild pandas are solitary and territorial. The film crew also follows the training of a young panda (above), born in captivity in the Wolong Panda Center, who is learning to be in the wild. There are only around 2,000 Giant Pandas left in the world today. As we learn in the film, these animals do not hibernate and therefore must keep feeding even throughout the winter months, and in order to maintain their energy, they must eat bamboo up to 14 hours each day.

Wicked in Concert: A Musical Celebration of the Iconic Broadway Score

njoy a musical celebration of the iconic songs of the Broadway blockbuster Wicked written by legendary composer Stephen Schwartz. The special program Wicked in Concert features reimagined musical arrangements created just for this broadcast, performed by celebrity artists from the worlds of film, pop music and television. Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel host the show; and performers include Ariana DeBose, Stephanie Hsu, Rita Moreno, Jennifer Nettles, Alex Newell, Isaac Powell, Amber Riley (at right) and Gabrielle Ruiz. Based on the 1995 novel “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West” by Gregory Maguire, and now in its 18th year running on Broadway, Wicked Amber Riley explores what happened in the Land of Oz from the perspective of witches Elphaba and Glinda. Long before Dorothy arrives, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships — until the world decides to call one “good” and the other one “wicked.” At its heart, Wicked is a story of personal empowerment, an unlikely friendship, and what it means to be different. The superb musical numbers featured in this television event include much of the beloved score, including The Wizard and I, Defying Gravity, Popular, Wonderful, No Good Deed, For Good and As Long As You’re Mine. The program is directed by Broadway legend Baayork Lee, who has performed in a dozen prominent shows and whose directing and choreography credits include a wide array of productions at Washington’s Arena Stage. The orchestral arrangements feature members of the American Pops Orchestra under the baton of Luke Frazier and were filmed in multiple locations, including Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and New York. Since opening in 2003, Wicked is now the 5th longest-running show in Broadway history and has been seen by more than 60 million people worldwide.

ilmmaker Rick McKay’s 2003 film Broadway: The Golden Age delighted theater fans with its astonishing Who’s Who compilation of intimate interviews. An invaluable firsthand archive, the film featured fascinating backstage stories and the reminiscences of stars of Broadway’s so-called “Golden Age” in the 1940s and ’50s. Long at work compiling a sequel to continue his insider’s history of Broadway from 1959 until the early 1980s, McKay’s untimely death in 2018 stopped completion of the film. But a new team of producers took on the project to bring it to fruition. Among the galaxy of stars featured in interviews are Bea Arthur, Elizabeth Ashley, Alec Baldwin, Carol Burnett, Glenn Close, André De Shields, Charles Durning, Jane Fonda, Robert Goulet, Celeste Holm, Cherry Jones, Donna McKechnie, Liza Minnelli, Robert Morse, James Naughton, Jerry Orbach, Elaine Paige, Robert Redford, Chita Rivera, Liev Schreiber, Elaine Stritch, Dick Van Dyke, Ben Vereen, Lesley Anne Warren and others. They touch on a wide variety of classic Broadway shows, including Once Upon a Mattress, Bye Bye Birdie, Barefoot in the Park, Pippin, A Chorus Line, Ain’t Misbehavin,’ Chicago and 42nd Street. n the new special Rick Steves: Best of the Alps, join the European travel expert on an alpine adventure — from Italy to Austria to Switzerland to France — with scenic train rides, breathtaking lifts, majestic glaciers and unforgettable hikes. In this greatest-hits trip to the Alps, Steves celebrates both nature and culture. The program conquers the Dolomites in Italy and the Zugspitze in Austria. Then, in Switzerland, Steves savors more jaw-dropping mountain beauty — from the Matterhorn to the Jungfrau to Appenzell. And in France, with Chamonix as a springboard, he rides the lift up to the Aiguille du Midi and hut-hops along the iconic Tour du Mont Blanc hiking path. While visiting the literal high points of Europe with Steves, get a glimpse of alpine life, from folk music to rustic cheese-making. The program repeats Sunday, August 22. elebrate the critically acclaimed documentary series and WETA co-production from filmmakers Ken Burns and Lynn Novick that premiered in April 2021, spotlighting the iconic literary figure Ernest Hemingway (pictured, at his home in Cuba, circa 1950s). The new in-depth special Ken Burns: Hemingway features new interviews with Burns, Novick, writer Geoffrey Ward and others who helped bring together the powerful six-hour series. Featuring revealing moments from the film, the program provides insights into the personality of the author — and his literary achievements. The special, hosted by Jeff Daniels, repeats August 21. The original three-part documentary film Hemingway: A Film by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick examines the visionary work and turbulent life of the influential writer. Interweaving his eventful biography with excerpts from his works, the series reveals the brilliant, complicated man behind the myth and the art he created. hat does life look like for LGBTQ+ youth 50 years after Stonewall? The POV film Pier Kids documents both isolation and inclusion, highlighting the joys and resilience of a community many choose to ignore — at New York City’s historic Christopher Street Pier, where homeless queer Black youth navigate the streets to find safety and stability. The film shines a light on this underground community, showcasing the intricate ways queer people of color utilize public space to build chosen family. Filmed over the course of five years (2011-2016), the LGBTQ+ community is at the heart of the program, which offers glimpses into many lives while providing intimate access to three individuals. Director Elegance Bratton said, “I made this film as a way to help Black families understand what happens to their queer children after they’ve been kicked out. Most importantly, I made this film to redirect the modern gay rights movement in support of the people who started it, Black and Brown homeless queer youth.”

Part detective story, part true-life drama, the series uses the latest investigative techniques, forensic science and historical examination to unearth new evidence, challenge prevailing ideas and accepted wisdom, overturn existing hypotheses, spotlight forgotten mysteries, and ultimately rewrite history. The award-winning series has covered such topics as the Salem witch trials, the black plague, the Titanic’s sinking, and more. This month, tune in for episodes Viking Warrior Queen (August 4) and Cleopatra’s Lost Tomb (August 11). Additional episode Egypt’s Darkest Hour airs August 18 only on WETA Metro, examining evidence of the collapse of ancient Egypt’s Old Kingdom. Jesse Owens: American Experience

race the story of Jesse Owens’ remarkable victories in the face of Nazi racism during the 1936 Olympics in an encore presentation of a 2012 American Experience film. On April 2, 1936, when the 22-year-old son of a sharecropper entered the Olympic stadium in Berlin, he was, he later remembered, barely able to control his anger: “I was angry because of the insults that Hitler and the other German leaders had hurled at me and my Negro teammates on the Olympic squad.” The young athlete channeled his raw emotions into extraordinary achievements, winning four gold medals. The film tells Owens’ story, from his upbringing in a poor Cleveland neighborhood to his early career to his remarkable victories; from Adolf Hitler’s ambitions for the 1936 Olympics to the movement in Western democracies to boycott the event — and the pressures on Owens to attend. Despite his successes, Owens would struggle to find a place for himself in a United States that was still wrestling to overcome its own deeply entrenched racism.

Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson

en Burns’s powerful two-part 2005 film chronicles the tumultuous life of Jack Johnson, the first Black heavyweight boxing champion, a man whose achievements in the ring won him enormous fame but also unprecedented animosity from white America — as did, in that era, Johnson’s relationships with white women. The film, a co-production of Florentine Films and WETA, presents the biography of an extraordinary athlete: Johnson reached the pinnacle of success as a pugilist at a time when boxing was among America’s premier sports. But the film is more deeply about race in America. Johnson, born in 1878, began boxing as a teenager in the Jim Crow-era South, and after years of struggle, he won the world heavyweight crown in 1908. He then defeated a series of challengers — “white hopes.” The film explores how, in the years that followed, the U.S. government prosecuted Johnson under the Mann Act in a sham 1913 trial, persecuting the larger-than-life figure for what W.E.B. DuBois termed “his unforgivable blackness.”

Flour Power • An entertaining new 10-part BBC series sweeps in to businesses with baking cultures and challenges four competitive co-workers to put their baking to the test, pitting them against each other in a battle to be crowned the best baker in the office. From designers to distillers and teachers to charity workers, amateur bakers from all walks of life come together to craft their best cookies, scones, cakes and brownies in heated competition in the run-up to a companywide bake sale. The workmates’ creations are ultimately tasted, judged and scored by a team of judges. Once the dough has risen and the dust has settled, who will emerge victorious and take home the Flour Power trophy? Nichola Reith, left, hosts.

Before We Die, Series 2 • In Series 1 (10 episodes) of this Swedish crime thriller, airing this month, Tuesday nights on WETA UK, police detective Hanna Svensson — an inspector in the Stockholm police department’s financial crime unit — steps in to handle a mysterious informant in a criminal organization when her police colleague and lover, Sven, goes missing amidst a power struggle in the underworld. The situation becomes complicated by the involvement of Hanna’s estranged son Christian. Series 2 comes to WETA Passport in August, featuring eight additional episodes that continue the storyline. Call the Midwife, Series 9 • In anticipation of Series 10, coming soon from the popular midwifery drama, catch up on Series 9’s eight episodes on WETA Passport starting August 4, and then in September watch weekly premieres of Series 10’s eight new episodes a full month before they broadcast! In Series 9 the East End London medics and midwives encounter new challenges as the team’s experiences are shaped by love, loss and doubt. The programs continue to spotlight social, cultural and economic issues. An abandoned baby, a diphtheria outbreak, a pregnant prostitute, an elevator delivery, funding challenges and more are among the plotlines.

Follow along as Margaret celebrates her first Thank-You Day, Daniel takes his first trip to the hospital and Prince Wednesday’s brother departs for college. The Emmy-winning WETA PBS Kids series from Fred Rogers Productions addresses key social and emotional learning themes for preschoolers and kindergartners and their parents, from managing sibling rivalry and maintaining calm at mealtimes, to missing loved ones, growing up and much more. Each episode of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood showcases two distinct stories featuring the 4-year-old and his friends, who invite viewers to join them on their adventures as they explore the colorful Neighborhood of Make-Believe. Music reinforces the unique theme of every show, so preschoolers — and parents — can sing along and incorporate the new learning into their daily lives.

The characters grapple with weighty decisions and responsibilities, while wrestling with pressured personal lives.

n the four-part Scottish drama-thriller, Kelly MacDonald (Boardwalk Empire, No Country for Old Men) portrays Anna Dean, who must stand trial after being accused of leaking her son’s murderer’s new identity online and conspiring to have him killed. Hard-working family man Craig Myers (James Harkness) must try to prove his innocence — or is he really the man who killed Dean’s son 15 years before? John Hannah (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) co-stars as DI Stephen Grover who, previously accused of a crime, relates to Myers and feels he must try to prove the man’s innocence. The series revolves around the trial and Dean’s effort to unmask her son’s killer.

O’Connell is revered as a pioneer of refined American cooking, and as the restaurateur who transformed a Virginia country inn into a culinary temple. Together, they illuminate this hidden national crisis. It is predicted that one in three children born since 2000 will develop the disease, but the documentary also reveals new hopes. In the film, multiple voices converge to tell their community’s story, from the formerly incarcerated drug dealers turned little-league coaches to the police who are re-trained to guard the public safety with compassion and empathy. Morton’s crusade transforms Pyne Poynt Park from a drug-infested battlefield into a field of dreams where, for sacred hours, youths can play in the field and feel free.

Wild Metropolis presents footage of these animals and examines how they have applied natural-born skills and abilities to their new homes while also making great physical and behavioral adaptations. A wide range of species is featured, from humpback whales in New York’s Hudson River to penguins in Cape Town, from otters in Singapore to pythons on Bangkok streets. The series explores some of the world’s best-known cities from the perspective of the animals who live in them. The three episodes, Residents, Commuters and Survivors, also air August 26 on WETA Metro.

edieval music, choral favorites and Renaissance masterpieces abound this month on Classical WETA’s Choral Showcase! From 1151, one of the oldest surviving musical manuscripts is the Ordo Virtutum, or “Play of the Virtues” by Hildegard von Bingen. This morality play dramatizes the struggle of a wandering soul (Anima) between the lures of the devil and 12 personified virtues. Released this summer, in what is called “the first complete, historically accurate recording,” Patrick Dupre Quigley directs Seraphic Fire (left) on the August 1 program. Seraphic Fire On August 8, we’ll hear two beloved requiems: the 1893 version of Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem with Ensemble Aedes and Les Siècles; and from 1947, the Requiem of Maurice Duruflé for chorus and organ, sung by the Houston Chamber Choir. We’ll offer masterpieces of the Renaissance with Claudio Monteverdi’s Vespro Della Beata Vergine — the Vespers of the Blessed Virgin — on August 15, in a landmark recording with the Monteverdi Choir and the English Baroque Soloists under John Eliot Gardiner. On August 22, we present Masters of the Portuguese Renaissance with sacred works by Manuel Cardoso, Diogo Dias Melgás and Filipe de Magalhães in performances by Cupertino, Pro Cantione Antiqua, and A Capella Portuguesa. A dramatic oratorio inspired by the Book of Revelation, The Book of the Seven Seals by Austrian composer Franz Schmidt is his last great work, premiering in 1938. Classical for Washington “Welcome Back!” to Live Music

discovered Louise Farrenc’s Third Symphony in March, on my first day back at the Kennedy Center. Classical WETA’s NSO Showcase team, producer John Banther, music recordist and editor Charles Lawson and I had been invited to a live rehearsal with National Symphony Orchestra music director Gianandrea Noseda, the first in a year! As I sat down in the empty Concert Gianandrea Noseda and the NSO Hall, the orchestra rehearsed the slow movement of Farrenc’s Symphony No. 3, which opens with a soulstirring clarinet melody. It was followed by Haydn’s “Miracle” Symphony, an appropriate choice. Live music is indeed miraculous. This concert was recorded live, but for a digital audience. When, two months later, I saw the announcement for a real live concert featuring the superstar pianist Daniil Trifonov in the devilish Shostakovich Piano Concerto No.1, I immediately bought a “pod” of tickets. I’ve been going to the Kennedy Center since it opened, but this felt strange. There were only 250 audience members in a hall that seats about 2,500. The irrepressible Maestro Noseda greeted us from the stage and we all burst into applause. Audience and performers alike were about to receive a great gift — one I know I’ve taken for granted for so many years. I hope we can carry this renewed appreciation of live music into the future, as we look forward to an extraordinary new NSO season. By the way, the Farrenc/Haydn and the Trifonov concerts are both available on the NSO’s Digital Stage and at NationalSymphony.org. NSO Showcase returns to Classical WETA this fall with an exciting new lineup of concerts.

assion rules the heart in operas presented in August on Classical WETA Opera House in recorded performances by renowned opera houses: • Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, by Dmitri Shostakovich, airs August 7. This tale of a married woman whose passion for another man leads to murder was a great success when premiered in Leningrad in 1934 but was soon banned by Soviet authorities until 1961. We’ll hear a performance by the Royal Opera House in London, sung in Russian and starring soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek (below) in the title role. • Il Trovatore, one of Giuseppe Verdi’s most popular operas, airs August 14 in a 1960 recording from the Swedish Royal Opera that will showcase the late, renowned Swedish tenor, Jussi Björling. Verdi’s dramatic piece from his masterful middle-to-late period traces love, revenge, and a horrifying family connection. • The focus shifts to the 20th century on August 21 with Richard Strauss’s searing Elektra. The Swedish Royal Opera brings us another vintage recording from 1965 with legendary soprano Birgit Nilsson. This highly charged, psychological drama is based on the ancient Greek myth of a woman obsessed with avenging the murder of her father.
