BBC/GORDON BUCHANAN
new three-part Nature miniseries offers a front-row seat for an extraordinary wildlife experience, as animals become the cinematographers and we see the world as though through their eyes. Cameraman Gordon Buchanan and a team of pioneering animal behaviorists join forces to capture never-before-seen behavior through state-of-the-art cameras worn by the animals themselves. The cameras — custom built by camera-design expert Chris Watts to fit unobtrusively on the animals and to be removed easily later — allow viewers to sprint across the savanna with a cheetah, plunge into the ocean with a seal and swing through the trees with a chimpanzee. Soft neoprene harnesses secured with Velcro keep the cameras in place temporarily. Among the footage, newborn meerkats are shown in their burrow for the first time, and in the Atlantic Ocean, an unborn devil ray is shown kicking inside its mother’s stomach — a phenomenon never before captured on film. Animals with Cameras visits eight countries and features three different species per episode, spotlighting meerkats, chimpanzees, Magellanic penguins, cheetahs, fur seals, Chacma baboons, devil rays, Eurasian brown bears and shepherd dogs. Wildlife photographer Gordon Buchanan also appears on Nature this month in the episode Snowbound: Animals of Winter on February 28. Support for this Nature program was made possible in part by the Arnhold Family in memory of Clarisse Arnhold; the Halmi Family in memory of Robert Halmi, Sr.; Sue and Edgar Wachenheim III; the Kate W. Cassidy Foundation; the Lillian Goldman Charitable Trust; the Filomen M. D’Agostino Foundation; Rosalind P. Walter; Sandra Atlas Bass; the Corporation for Public Broadcasting; and by the nation’s public television stations.

ecades after mystery writer Agatha Christie’s death in 1976, her character Miss Marple — the elderly spinster investigator — remains one of literature’s most popular creations. With knitting needles clicking away in Agatha Christie’s Marple, the unlikely sleuth is portrayed by Julia McKenzie, who appeared in Masterpiece’s production of Cranford before stepping into the shoes of a succession of screen Marples, including Margaret Rutherford, Angela Lansbury, Joan Hickson and Geraldine McEwan. Adaptations airing this month in Thursday double-features are Endless Night and The Pale Horse (February 1); The Secret of Chimneys and The Blue Geranium (February 8); The Mirror Crack’d from Side to Side and A Pocket Full of Rye (February 15); and Murder Is Easy (with Benedict Cumberbatch, above) and They Do It With Mirrors (February 22). Following episodes of Agatha Christie’s Marple on Thursdays, February 1-15, WETA reprises The Widower, a drama that tells the true story of Malcolm Webster (portrayed The Widower by Reece Shearsmith) — a seemingly mild-mannered male nurse who marries, and then attempts to kill, a succession of women to cash in on their life insurance policies. The three-part series co-stars Sheridan Smith, Kate Fleetwood and Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife). John Hannah (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Sliding Doors) portrays Detective Inspector Charlie Henry, who pursued Webster.
Janet King and Victoria continue Sundays at 8 & 9 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD O
n Sunday nights in February, WETA presents the remaining episodes of ongoing popular dramas Janet King, Series 3 and Victoria, Series 2 on Masterpiece, respectively starring Marta Dusseldorp and Jenna Coleman. In Janet King, the prosecutor has become an examiner for Australia’s National Crime Commission, probing sports betting and its connection to crime rings involved in the production of drugs boosting athletic performance, as well as match fixing, kickbacks and murder. Victoria, meanwhile, spotlights the young monarch as she contends with the trials of motherhood, the Irish Famine, the pressures of her enormous responsibilities, and more. Tom Hughes reprises his role as the queen’s dashing consort Prince Albert, and co-starring as well are Diana Rigg as the Duchess of Buccleuch and Rufus Sewell as Lord Melbourne. Both seasons of the dramas conclude February 25. COURTESY ITV STUDIOS 2017 FOR MASTERPIECE

wo series — four programs, airing back to back — narrated by Martin Clunes examine why and how humans have developed such a unique and long-lasting relationship with dogs, a companion to humankind for thousands of years and the most diverse species of mammal on the planet. Why are they so different? Where in the wild did they originate? And how much do we really know about them? The first program offers insights into the way dogs understand us, love us and in some cases, can save or enhance our lives, spotlighting how the true success of their species is our mutually beneficial relationship. Then three programs examine the diversity of dogs, separating them into three distinct tribes that give rise to the episodes’ titles and content — the guardians (Man’s Best Friend), the workers (Working Like a Dog) and the companions (We Are Family). Celebrated are the qualities of each group, including their remarkable physiology, their emotional bond with humans and their extraordinary super-senses.
Nature: The Last Rhino
A
Wednesday, February 21 at 8 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD
Nature film meets Sudan, the last male of his sub-species, the Northern White Rhinoceros, exploring his harrowing journey with the international cast of characters who have been involved in his life — from his being snatched as a calf from his mother’s side in war-torn Central Africa, to his captivity as a prized exhibit in a concrete zoo behind the Iron Curtain while poaching devastated his kind to extinction back home. Now 43 years old and half-blind, Sudan is living out his days under 24-hour armed guard in a protective sanctuary in Kenya. As his kind nears its last hour, scientists and animal experts turn to technology to save the Northern White Rhino before it dies out forever.
The Gilded Age: American Experience
A
Tuesday, February 6 at 9 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD
special two-hour presentation of the history series American Experience meets the titans and barons (such as John Pierpont Morgan, right center), of the glittering late-19th century, whose materialistic extravagance contrasted harshly with the extreme poverty of the workers who challenged them. The Gilded Age explores how, 30 years after the Civil War, America had transformed itself into an economic powerhouse and was fast becoming the world’s leading producer of food, coal, oil and steel. That transformation created stark new divides in wealth, class and opportunity, and by the end of the 19th century, the richest 4,000 families in the country — less than one percent of all Americans — possessed nearly as much wealth as the other 11.6 million families combined. The vast disparities in wealth between these strata of society sparked violent debate over the concentration and distribution of wealth, and government’s role in pursuing economic growth vs. economic justice. Also from American Experience this month is The Bombing of Wall Street (February 13), spotlighting a still-unsolved 1920 crime in the nation’s financial center. LIBRARY OF CONGRESS

opular drama series Pie in the Sky restarts from its opening episode this month on WETA UK. Tales of crime and culinary pursuits are interwoven in the light-hearted BBC series, which ran for five seasons and 40 episodes, spotlighting a high-minded, talented detective who loves food and dreams of becoming a restaurateur. As the series opens, Henry Crabbe — portrayed by the late Richard Griffiths (Harry Potter, The History Boys) — is about to take early retirement from the police force and buy the restaurant “Pie in the Sky.” However, the detective’s boss is reluctant to let him leave and sets conditions for his departure, coercing Crabbe into being on call when cases need solving. Maggie Steed (EastEnders, Florence Foster Jenkins) portrays Crabbe’s wife, Margaret.

s Victoria, Series II continues on WETA TV 26 this month, the first season of the Masterpiece drama airs from the beginning on WETA UK, following Britain’s Victoria from the time she becomes queen in 1837 at the age of 18 through her education in politics and her courtship and marriage to Prince Albert. Victoria paints a portrait of a monarch who was raised to be the pawn of her powerful elders but who quickly showed the empire who was in charge. Her reign lasted 63 years. Famous for her candor and spirit, she enjoyed a passionate marriage, had nine children and was queen of the most important nation of her era. Jenna Coleman (Doctor Who) stars as Victoria, and the cast includes Rufus Sewell as British prime minister Lord Melbourne — Victoria’s friend and confidante — and Tom Hughes as the handsome, brilliant and awkward Albert, who won Victoria’s heart.

four-part spy thriller series starring Toby Stephens, Tom Hollander, Rupert Penry-Jones and Samuel West dramatizes the story of Blunt, Burgess, Philby and Maclean, the most notorious double agents in British espionage history. During nearly 20 years of counter-intelligence, the four were bound by their beliefs and secrets. In 1934 at Cambridge University, the four brilliant and idealistic young men were recruited to spy for Russia. Fueled by youthful idealism, a passion for communism, a talent for lying and a hatred for Hitler and fascism, the four became embroiled in obtaining and relaying Britain’s biggest secrets, betraying their country. As Europe struggled against the dictatorships of Spain, Italy and the Third Reich, the four passed on Enigma secrets and atomic bomb developments. Their careers took them to Guernica, pre-war Vienna, London during the Blitz, Cold War Washington and, ultimately, to Moscow itself.

he BBC Natural History Unit’s monumental documentary Life spotlights the variety of life on Earth and the extraordinary tactics animals and plants have developed to stay alive. Sir David Attenborough narrates the series — more than four years in the making, filmed over 3,000 days across every continent and in every habitat — as it captures individual creatures under extreme pressure to overcome challenges from adversaries and their environment, pushing the boundaries of behavior. The BBC cinematic techniques capture unprecedented sequences in the series’ 10 episodes, The Challenges of Life, Reptiles and Amphibians, Mammals, Fish, Birds, Insects, Hunter and Hunted, Creatures of the Deep, Plants and Primates. ean Bean (Lord of The Rings, Game of Thrones, Goldeneye, Patriot Games) stars as maverick soldier Richard Sharpe in the classic drama series, which features smartly written action and adventure set during the Napoleonic wars of the early 19th century. Daragh O’Malley portrays Sharpe’s friend and comrade in arms, Patrick Harper. The fast-moving, feature-length films, produced in 16 installments from 1993 to 2008, are based on Bernard Cornwell’s best-selling novels. The series charts the fictional protagonist’s progress in the British Army during the wars, taking him from British-occupied Portugal to Spain, France and ultimately, India, as he faces challenges on and off the battlefield. The programs bring to the screen the danger and romance of life and warfare in the Napoleonic era. fter The Mekong River with Sue Perkins concludes this month, the program’s host takes a new journey of discovery, traveling down India’s Ganges River to learn about the economic and spiritual engine that drives the subcontinent. In the new miniseries’ three episodes, The Himalayas, The Gangetic Plain and The Delta, the comedian and presenter traces the course of the great river, from source to sea, to tell the story of modern India at a crucial point in its history. No other body of water is as important to so many; the Ganges’ waters are vital to 450 million people for food and industry. But as India’s supercharged economy continues to grow, the Ganges is under threat as never before. Beginning her journey high in the Himalayas at the river’s holy source, Perkins travels through the agricultural and industrial heartlands of the Gangetic Plain and the holy city of Varanasi, and to the river’s vast delta on the Bay of Bengal. With humor, warmth and curiosity, she explores the changing lives of the people of the Ganges. FOLK FILMS LTD/BBC

On Monday night, February 12 at 9 p.m., Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s broadcast of Front Row Washington features this work and two others by Poulenc, along with Walter Gieseking’s Quintet for Piano and Winds in a Phillips Collection concert by Ensemble 4.1. Formed in 2013 by pianist Thomas Hoppe and four wind soloists from top German orchestras, Ensemble 4.1 devotes their programs to rarely played works from the Romantic and Modern periods. With the Phillips Collection under construction, this recital as well as our Monday, February 5 broadcast were recorded in the newly-renovated Warne Ballroom at the Cosmos Club. The exquisitely restored ballroom adorned with two historically accurate French-made chandeliers offers the perfect environment for flutist Annie Wu’s “An American in Paris” recital, featuring a flute sonata by Philippe Gaubert, Claude Debussy’s famous Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune, and Henri Dutilleux’s Sonatine for Flute and Piano, along with works by American composers Eldin Burton and Robert Beaser. In addition to performing, Ms. Wu and her accompanist, pianist Feng Niu, are pursuing post-graduate degrees at the Ensemble 4.1 New England Conservatory of Music. In 2002, Juilliard students Greg Anderson and Elizabeth Joy Roe teamed up as the Anderson & Roe Piano Duo, morphing into what San Francisco Classical Voice called “the most dynamic duo of this generation.” Now known for their Billboard chart-topping albums and popular YouTube videos, the Anderson & Roe Duo’s National Gallery of Art recital is featured on our Monday, February 19 broadcast. With works including “The Adoration of the Earth” from Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps, a Rachmaninoff Suite and Ravel’s La Valse to Radiohead’s “Paranoid Android” and Daft Punk’s “Lose Yourself to Dance,” you won’t want to miss hearing how this robust piano duo makes classical music, in their words, “a relevant and powerful force in society.” Front Row Washington closes out the month Monday, February 26 at the Freer Gallery of Art with a recital by the Shanghai Quartet and pianist Gloria Chien. Between Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 1 in E-flat Major and César Franck’s F minor piano quintet is a work by one of China’s leading composers, Ye Xiaogang, called “Colorful Sutra Banner for Piano, Violin and Cello.” Inspired by Xiaogang’s journey to the Tibetan Plateau, the piece recalls the fluttering sutra banners, sacred symbols among Tibetans, which are an integral part of both the landscape and mindscape of this predominantly Buddhist region. Be sure to mark your calendars for Monday nights at 9 p.m. and tune in for each week’s Front Row Washington broadcast to experience for yourself refreshingly ear-opening performances of the familiar and the new, recorded live in-concert. nearly fell out of my chair, I was so excited.” That’s how Leonard Bernstein described his first childhood orchestral experience to The Boston Globe before the premiere of his Divertimento for Orchestra honoring the centennial of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. It’s a fitting work for his own centennial — Bernstein at 100 — part of a year-long Kennedy Center tribute to the composer. This delightful suite is built on two notes, B and C (for Boston Centenary.) It begins with Sennets and Tuckets (a Shakespearean allusion). Other highlights include a waltz that channels Tchaikovsky and a Mazurka that quotes Beethoven. Various groups of instruments get the spotlight throughout this highly original piece, which opens our February broadcast of NSO Showcase. All the music was recorded by Classical WETA at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (above). The program continues with Elgar’s Cello Concerto, led by Scottish composer/conductor Sir James MacMillan. The Washington Post described the performance thus: “The German cellist Alban Gerhardt was the soloist in Elgar’s much-played and much-loved cello concerto, and he played it with taut intensity, providing an athletic, anxious focus to a piece that was played with an almost uniform sense of wistfulness, apart from the rousing rustic allegro at the start of the long finale. Although Gerhardt flung himself into his playing, he presented the affect of a kind of emotional restraint, anguish straining to get out.” Our NSO Showcase program ends with Mahler’s First Symphony, “The Titan” led by Nikolaj Znaider. NSO principal bass Robert Oppelt says, “Mahler’s First Symphony is quite a treat — a journey of many moods. One passes initially through a kind of primordial eeriness, on to Klezmer and the Ländler [a folk-dance precursor to the waltz], and capped off by a triumphant finale with full brass. The main theme of the third movement is a round, which we know as “Frère Jacques.” I get it started with a solo, but there are a few surprises in store!” Which admirably describes February’s NSO Showcase on Classical Elgar Bernstein Mahler WETA 90.9 FM.
