WETA Focus

This month, we bring you a wonderful array of programming, from superb drama on Masterpiece with the concluding episodes of popular series Endeavour, to this year’s finals on student quiz show It’s Academic, to new culinary arts competition on The Great American Recipe. Beyond those o erings, we feature a lineup of exciting concerts from top acts such as Bob Dylan and Carole King as part of our summer membership campaign, and a slate of programming airing in celebration of LGBTQ+ Pride Month, including fascinating biographies and documentaries.

We at WETA are very proud of the depth and variety of our programming. Our vital service is the legacy of visionaries who saw the potential of public television to inform, entertain and inspire — a place of lifelong learning. Public broadcasting — and America — lost one such visionary in early May with the passing of Newton Minow, who was chairman of the Federal Communications Commission at the time of WETA’s founding in 1961. Among his many pioneering initiatives, he helped launch nonprofit educational television in our nation and was one of its great champions. I hope we made him proud.

In WETA news, I am pleased to share that PBS NewsHour has earned a coveted Peabody Award for journalistic excellence in the news coverage titled “Guns in America.” I congratulate our NewsHour colleagues for this recognition of their extraordinary reporting in service to the American public.

Thank you for supporting WETA with your membership; and enjoy our June o erings.

Final Season on Masterpiece

Sundays, June 18-July 2 at 9 p.m. on WETA PBS & WETA Metro; stream on the PBS App

Catch up on Seasons 1-8 — and watch the Morse spin-off Lewis — with WETA Passport

In the end of an era, the curtain soon drops on the acclaimed, riveting detective series Endeavour after eight previous seasons of the beloved Inspector Morse prequel. The gripping drama — portraying the early years of brooding, gifted Sergeant Endeavour Morse of Thames Valley police in Oxford — reaches its poignant conclusion with three suspenseful final episodes that roll out starting June 18. Shaun Evans stars in the title role, with Roger Allam as his streetwise superior and father-like mentor, DCI Fred Thursday; in the final episodes, the two face intriguing new crimes that include an unsolved case linked to the past. Characters from former seasons pop up in this grand finale, and Morse must try to resolve his professional and romantic future.

Inspired by Masterpiece’s 1987-2000 series Inspector Morse, starring John Thaw, and based on Colin Dexter’s bestselling mysteries, Endeavour was written with complexity, intricacy and tenderness by series creator Russell Lewis. The drama turns back the clock to explore the making of this matchless detective, who spurns his first name to go by just “Morse.” Endeavour first aired in 2012 and earned a devoted following for Evans, Allam and the other principal actors. The ensemble cast includes veteran actor Anton Lesser as CS Reginald Bright, the exacting head of Oxford’s Castle Gate Police Station; Sean Rigby as Morse’s friend, colleague, and romantic rival DS Jim Strange; James Bradshaw as the punctilious police pathologist, Dr. Max DeBryn; and Abigail Thaw as Morse’s journalist confidante, Dorothea Frazil. Also featured are Caroline O’Neill as Thursday’s wife, Win; Sara Vickers as his daughter, Joan, who is the secret object of Morse’s infatuation; and Jack Bannon as Thursday’s son, Sam.

The ninth and final season of Endeavour opens in spring 1972 with DS Morse rejoining the force after an extended leave to treat his drinking problem, brought on by overwork and personal troubles. Morse is immediately immersed in a world he loves — orchestral music — where the performances are divine, but the personnel can be petty, dictatorial and even homicidal. He and Thursday also investigate a gangland slaying targeting a police informant, known to Thursday. As viewers have learned to expect, the cases in Oxford are often connected. With growing dread, Morse and Thursday face the prospect that an unresolved case (from a previous season) has resurfaced. Now the loose ends begin to intertwine. In the episodes that follow, previous investigations reemerge, new deaths occur, the romantic plot involving Joan Thursday accelerates, and the beguiling, intelligent drama comes to a close. Farewell Morse!

New in June for LGBTQ+ Pride Month

WETA celebrates LGBTQ+ Pride Month with special programming that includes independent films, historical documentaries, biographies and more. New films coming to air this month include Independent Lens: Mama Bears (Tuesday, June 20, 10 p.m. on WETA PBS; Saturday, June 24, 8 p.m. on WETA Metro) and American Experience: Casa Susanna (Tuesday, June 27, 8 p.m. on WETA PBS and WETA Metro).

Independent Lens: Mama Bears explores how the lives of conservative, Christian mothers are utterly transformed when they decide to accept their LGBTQ+ children. Spread throughout the country but connected through private Facebook groups, they call one another “mama bears” because of the ferocity with which they fight for their children’s rights and those of the entire LGBTQ+ community. These mothers champion their children — even if it challenges their belief systems and rips apart their worlds.

American Experience: Casa Susanna o ers a window on a secret chapter of LGBTQ+ history, relating the story of a modest home in the Catskills region of New York where, in the 1950s and ’60s, an underground network of transgender women and crossdressing men found refuge, freedom and acceptance. Known as Casa Susanna, the house provided a safe place to express their true selves and live for a few days as they had always dreamed — dressed as and living as women, without fear.

In the story, Ryeland’s star author — irascible mystery writer Alan Conway (Conleth Hill) — dies under suspicious circumstances with his last book seemingly unfinished. Thus, the series presents two mysteries: What happened to Alan? And how does his latest potboiler end? Susan assumes the role of detective in the case, taking place in the here and now. Meanwhile, Tim McMullan (Patrick Melrose) plays Atticus Pünd, the Poirot-like sleuth in the incomplete novel, whose investigation, set in 1955, parallels Susan’s. The twin cases unfold together, blending present and past, fact and fiction.

American Experience: Stonewall Uprising

WETA Metro comes to Comcast (270, 1148) on June 6!

Thursday, June 15 at 8 p.m. on WETA Metro

As part of its celebration of LGBTQ+ Pride Month in June, WETA reprises a documentary film that explores a major turning point in the modern gay civil rights movement. On June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar in New York City’s Greenwich Village, and violent protests erupted that lasted for six days and came to be known as the Stonewall Riots. Based on David Carter’s book “Stonewall: The Riots that Sparked the Gay Revolution,” and told through interviews with Stonewall patrons, reporters, and the policeman who led the raid, Stonewall Uprising recalls the fervently hostile climate in which the gay community lived in that era. See page 2 to learn about Pride Month programming on WETA Metro and WETA PBS.

The Boleyns: A Scandalous Family

Sunday, June 4, 8-11 p.m. on WETA Metro

A three-part miniseries spotlights England’s most infamous queen, Anne Boleyn, and her family. The second wife of Henry VIII, Anne was beloved, betrayed and — after being tried for crimes of adultery and treason on the king’s orders — beheaded. To understand Anne’s rise and fall, The Boleyns: A Scandalous Family illuminates her tight-knit, cunning and power-hungry family. Based on 16th-century letters and documents, the programs o er insights from Tudor scholars and dramatic re-enactments to bring the Boleyns’ story to life. Rising to the apex of power, they played a dangerous game and paid a high price; but they also changed British history, leaving Queen Elizabeth I, daughter of Anne, and Queen Elizabeth II, a Boleyn descendant, as legacies.

In June, WETA World presents more than 40 special programs in celebration of LGBTQ+ Pride Month — visit weta.org/pridemonth — to learn more. Among the o erings is For the Love of Friends, a documentary — set against the lead-up to a stage play based on the same story — that blends performance rehearsal clips with interview and archival footage to highlight the remarkable life and work of activist Brent Nicholson Earle. At the height of the AIDS epidemic, to help awaken America to the crisis and to honor the friends he lost, the actor/ playwright’s audacious response in 1986 was to embark on a 10,000mile, 20-month run around the perimeter of the United States to draw attention to the plight of AIDS patients.

America ReFramed: From Here

Thursday, June 1 at 8 p.m. on WETA World

“Where are you really from?” Inspired by a young generation’s creative response to this loaded question, the America ReFramed film FromHere follows four young artists and activists who represent the future of global citizenry, each from immigrant families coming of age in an era of rising xenophobia. Filmed over the better part of a decade in two of the world’s largest immigration countries, the U.S. and Germany, the program captures an international generation’s fight for belonging in an era of rising nationalism, as they create families, fight for citizenship, make art and forge identities in societies increasingly hostile to their existence.

Buffalo Soldiers: Fighting on Two Fronts, A Local, USA Special

Monday, June 19 at 8 p.m. on WETA World

A film examines the complex roles played by Bu alo Soldiers in U.S. history, and how they fought on two sets of front lines: military conflicts abroad and civil rights struggles at home. Established by Congress in 1868, the 14th Amendment granted full citizenship to Black men; and many pursued service in the armed forces. They helped lead the expansion of the U.S. westward; they built and guarded the Pacific Railroad, and served as park rangers in places like Yosemite before the government’s establishment of the National Park Service. The soldiers fought bravely in the Indian Wars, the Philippine-American War, the Mexican Punitive Expedition, and World Wars I & II. Bu alo Soldiers, in particular, participated in the subjugation of Native peoples as the U.S. appropriated tribal land, and the persecution of striking silver miners in Idaho, and they went up against Filipinos fighting for independence during the Spanish-American War, resulting in a complicated legacy. Choral Showcase presents The Wedding/Carmina Burana

Sunday, June 18 at 9 p.m.

Among the o erings on Choral Showcase this month, the June 18 program features music of love, passion, marriage, and fate: two works, remarkably similar, both drawn from ancient folklore. The first is Carl Or ’s Carmina Burana, a lusty cantata based on 13th-century Latin and German secular sources, discovered at an abbey near Munich. The second, Igor Stravinsky’s Les Noces, or “The Wedding,” draws from ancient Slavic folk tradition for a ballet with chorus that inhabits the same sound-world as The Rite of Spring, written just a few years before. Carmina Burana is performed by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus with Donald Runnicles conducting. Les Noces (The Wedding) features the Virginia Symphony Chorus with JoAnn Falletta, conducting. Choral Showcase airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on WETA Classical.

Wolf Trap Opera Presentations

on Opera Matinee

Saturdays, June 17 & 24 at 1 p.m. on WETA Classical

The Metropolitan Opera concludes its current broadcast season this month with Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) on June 3 and Der fliegende Holländer (The Flying Dutchman) on June 10, heard live on respective Saturdays on WETA Classical’s Opera Matinee. For the remainder of June, we are delighted to share recorded productions from Wolf Trap Opera’s 2022 season at The Barns.

Carl Maria von Weber’s landmark drama, Der Freischütz (The Marksman), airs June 17. Combining supernatural elements with folklore and spoken dialogue, Der Freischütz presents a classic struggle between good and evil that stems from a Romantic legend of an unsuccessful huntsman who summons the devil to improve his marksman skills so that he may earn the love of his beloved. It’s considered to be one of the premiere German operas of the Romantic era, a period when works began to diverge from Italian opera. Preeminent composers such as Hector Berlioz, Franz Liszt and Richard Wagner admired von Weber’s deeply colorful and chilling score — particularly the Wolf’s Glen scene, when the opera’s hero encounters demons.

Lee Anne Myslewski, Vice President of Wolf Trap Opera and Classical Programming, said of this production, “On a basic level, doing a German opera with a Wolf’s Glen scene at Wolf Trap in a German Barn seemed to be an easy decision! We had a cast materialize that was so well-suited to Germanic repertoire, and they made tackling what’s widely considered the first German Romantic opera really attractive.” Tenor Robert Stahley is the marksman, Max; Alexandria Shiner is his beloved Agathe; and Cory McGee is the sinister Caspar. Lidiya Yankovskaya, a regular at Wolf Trap Opera, conducted.

Airing on Opera Matinee on June 24 is Susannah by American composer Carlisle Floyd, a two-act work composed during the McCarthy era of the 1950s while Floyd was a member of piano faculty of Florida State University. This tragedy of an innocent 18-year-old woman falsely accused as a seductress is based on the Apocryphal biblical tale of Susannah and the Elders. Floyd said that the work was intended to be di erent from a traditional opera; he explores themes of feminism with, some speculate, overtones of the fear-spreading campaign of McCarthyism. The opera’s setting in Tennessee gave Floyd the opportunity to incorporate Appalachian folk melodies, alongside traditional classical music and Protestant hymns.

Floyd’s sensitive and moving portrayal was acclaimed after its premiere in 1955: It was awarded the New York Music Critics Circle Award for Best New Opera in 1956 and represented American music and culture at the 1958 World’s Fair in Brussels.

“Susannah has been on our short list for a number of years,” Ms. Myslewski said. “As one of Floyd’s first operatic works, it showcases a maturity and innovation that explains its enduring popularity. The simple Appalachian-inspired melodies are served well by the musicians; Susannah and brother Sam sing some of the most insightful arias in the contemporary repertoire, and our artists do the material justice.”

Conductor Stephanie Rhodes Russell led this production with principal singers Ann Toomey, Christian Pursell and Robert Stahley.
