mong the many delights of living in Greater Washington are the region’s dazzling cultural resources — and especially so the host of world-class classical music performances on offer. Of course, not all are able to attend the magnificent concerts staged in the national capital area’s many venues, and we at WETA strive to serve the public by widening the audience for important performances in our community. Our classical music radio station, Classical WETA 90.9 FM, partners frequently with a wide array of organizations and ensembles to bring great classical music recitals, recorded live in concert, to Washington-area listeners. In recent months, Classical WETA has presented broadcasts of local opera performances, concerts from the Library of Congress, recitals at Washington embassies, and concerts from local music series including Virginia’s Castleton Festival. This month, two partnerships, and resulting broadcasts, in particular stand out. Each Monday at 9 p.m. in August, Classical WETA’s local performance broadcast Front Row Washington presents concerts from the National Gallery of Art, a series of lovely recitals recorded in the atrium of the Gallery’s West Building. The concerts, frequently themed in honor of gallery exhibitions, represent a marriage of music and art, and we are very proud to partner with the Gallery to bring these performances to Greater Washington via our broadcasts (and to a national audience via audio stream on the Web at classicalweta.org). We at WETA are also very excited to announce that Classical WETA will partner with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to broadcast live the National Symphony Orchestra’s Season Opening Ball Concert on September 25. The concert is the inaugural performance of Christoph Eschenbach as Music Director of the NSO and the Kennedy Center. The maestro will conduct a program of music by Richard Strauss, Johann Strauss Jr., and Franz Liszt with pianist Lang Lang and soprano Renée Fleming. Beyond this broadcast, WETA and the Kennedy Center will work together to bring many more NSO performances to the public via Classical WETA. I invite you to tune in and enjoy these local performances. Thank you for your support.

allelujah Broadway, a concert special filmed in Prague’s magnificent baroque Cathedral of St. Simon and St. Jude, celebrates the famous Broadway musicals that have made audiences feel they’ve had a near-religious experience. The amazing Rodrick Dixon (left) of Three Mo Tenors, the Chicago Symphony’s powerful soprano Alfreda Burke, the marvelous “Irish Tenor” Anthony Kearns and Broadway star Linda Eder perform songs from Carousel, Jeckyll and Hyde, West Side Story, Les Misérables, Rent, Camille Claudel and Billy Elliot — and medleys from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Godspell and Jesus Christ Superstar.

incoln Center Theater’s production of South Pacific, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s musical theater classic, airs live from the Vivian Beaumont Theater. Based on James Michener’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book Tales of the South Pacific, the musical, set during World War II, tells the sweeping romantic story of two couples — U.S. Navy nurse Nellie Forbush (Kelli O’Hara, at right) and French plantation owner Emile de Becque (Paulo Szot), and Navy Airman Joe Cable and a young native girl, Liat — and how their happiness is threatened by their own prejudices and the fates of war. Lincoln Center Theater’s revival, directed by Bartlett Sher, won seven Tony Awards.

ordWorld, a 3D animated series designed for preschool children, presents a colorful, word-rich environment where friends have fun and meet challenges through word play. Each episode of WordWorld is a narrative built around a troupe of WordFriends — animals presented in the shape of words. Sheep loves to pretend; Frog is the brainiac and word “expert”; Duck is still learning his letters (and social skills); Pig lives in the moment; Ant is always on the go; and Dog is a true best friend. The program follows the characters’ comic adventures, in which problems are resolved by “building” the right word. Word building reinforces the prereading concept that letters make words, and that words have real meaning. The series draws from four skill sets that are critical for young children’s emergent literacy — every storyline incorporates print awareness, letter knowledge, comprehension and self-awareness, and socio-emotional skills. Funding for WordWorld is provided in part by a grant from the U.s. department of education.

n the third season of One Stroke Painting With Donna Dewberry, starting in August on WETA Create, viewers learn to paint the quick and easy way. Known by beginner enthusiasts and professional painters alike for her “one stroke” method, host Donna Dewberry demonstrates how to blend, shade and highlight all in one brush stroke. Dewberry’s method is appropriate for all skill levels. Amateur painters and versatile decorative artists enjoy its speed, simplicity and beautiful results. On her painting and crafting series, the artist offers instruction on loading a brush, practices basic strokes and combines them to create beautiful decorative art. Among projects are turning ordinary glass jars into creative gifts and storage containers; painting colorful landscapes, flowers and leaves; creating outdoor fountains and birdbaths; paper crafting; and adding flourish to furniture and shelves. ugust is “Concerts from the National Gallery of Art Month” on Classical WETA’s local concert broadcast Front Row Washington. Our highlights, all recorded live in 2009 from the 67th and 68th seasons of the gallery’s Sunday evening concerts, include performances by early music groups Harmonious Blacksmith and the Zephyrus Ensemble. Bookending Front Row Washington in August are the Harmonious Blacksmith recital on August 2, which includes Renaissance works by John Bull, William Byrd, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck and John Dowland — and the Zephyrus Ensemble concert on August 30, which features music by François Couperin, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Jean Féry Rebel and Georg Philipp Telemann. Solo keyboard gets a turn in August as well, with Danish pianist Jens Elvekjaer’s recital — airing August 9 — of music by Haydn, Webern and Ravel, which the pianist concluded with Schumann’s Carnaval, Op. 9. On Jens Elvekjaer August 16, the Chiara String Quartet performs Prokofiev’s String Quartet No. 1 in B Minor, Op. 50, Webern’s Five Pieces for String Quartet, Op. 5, and Debussy’s String Quartet. Rounding out the performances, on August 23, California-born pianist Tara Artemis Kamangar offers a nod to her Persian heritage with a concert of rarely heard works by Persian composers, including two pieces by Iran’s leading female composer, Golnoush Khaleghi. Classical WETA 90.9 FM

ach month, Classical WETA 90.9 FM presents Theme Weekends — musical selections by theme, and in August, Classical WETA’s Sunday night broadcast Choral Showcase joins in with the August 20–22 “3 Bs” theme spotlighting Bach, Beethoven and Brahms. Among the works presented on Choral Showcase on August 22 is Johannes Brahms’s moving lament for the passed, Nänie, conducted by Herbert Blomstedt with words by Friedrich von Schiller. “B” number two is Beethoven’s choral masterpiece, his Missa Solemnis, which was written at about the same time as his 9th Symphony. The mass includes two brilliant fugues (in the Gloria and Credo), and a Dona nobis pacem in the finale. Nikolaus Harnoncourt conducts. The peace theme continues in “B” number three — Bach’s cantata about personal peace, Thomas Quasthoff “Der Friede sei mit dir.” The amazing Thomas Quasthoff performs with the RIAS Chamber Choir. And, of course, a “3 Bs” weekend wouldn’t be complete without the “S.” It’s Arnold Schoenberg’s work about peace on earth, Friede auf Erden, conducted by Robert Shaw. On August 27–29, Classical WETA Theme Weekends celebrates Mozart, Haydn and others during our “Hooked Presenting Classical Music All Day, Every Day With David Ginder, mornings • Marilyn Cooley, middays • on Classical” weekend, and Choral Showcase airs Haydn’s John Chester, afternoons/overnights • Nicole Lacroix, evenings oratorio on late-August heat, mid-January snow, and everyAnd hosting on the weekend: Jean Inaba, mornings • thing in-between. René Jacobs conducts the RIAS Chamber Judy Gruber, afternoons • Chip Brienza, evenings Choir and the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra in The Seasons.
