WETA’s co-production with Florentine Films chronicles our national pastime from the 1990s to the present, following up the landmark 1994 series Baseball

his month, we at WETA are delighted to present to public television nationwide an exciting new film from two premier storytellers of our nation’s history, our longtime friends and production partners Ken Burns and Lynn Novick. Their film, The Tenth Inning, a two-part, four-hour co-production of Florentine Films and WETA, follows up on the monumental, nine-“inning” 1994 series Baseball, bringing the chronicle of our national pastime up to date by exploring developments in the game from the 1990s to the present. With their trademark artistry, Ken and Lynn have created an enthralling film that spotlights great triumphs, devastating defeats, marquee players and their record-breaking feats, and the shadow cast over the game by players’ steroid use — all against the backdrop of contemporary events, from economic boom times to the tragedy of 9/11 and beyond. We at WETA have worked with Ken and Lynn for decades to bring some of the finest programming in television history to the American public, presenting the nation’s stories and examining who we are as a people. Ken and Lynn have together created a host of superb films working with WETA — from the Peabody Award-winning biography Frank Lloyd Wright and the series JAZZ, to Baseball, the mostwatched program in PBS history. Most recently, they collaborated on the acclaimed 2007 documentary THE WAR. We are immensely proud of our partnership, and we look forward to bringing many more great films to air: currently in the works are documentaries on Prohibition, the Dust Bowl; the Central Park Five and more. Tune in to WETA TV 26 and WETA HD this month and enjoy The Tenth Inning — and two additional engaging WETA co-productions that, respectively, spotlight America’s Revolutionary War ally Lafayette and Washington, D.C. urban planner Daniel Burnham. Thank you for your support.

The National Parks: America’s Best Idea
n the Labor Day holiday, WETA Television presents the entire six-part documentary series The National Parks: America’s Best Idea, directed by Ken Burns and co-produced with his longtime colleague Dayton Duncan, who wrote the script. The dazzling film — created in partnership with WETA and featuring stunning cinematography and extraordinary stories — explores the history of an idea as uniquely American as the Declaration of Independence and just as radical: that the most special places in the nation should be preserved, not for royalty or the rich, but for everyone. For episode descriptions, please see the television listings on pages 5–6.

Beginning with the crippling strike that alienated millions of fans and brought the game to the brink, this new film tells the tumultuous story of our national pastime up to the present. It celebrates baseball’s new Golden Age — an era of unprecedented home run totals, popularity and prosperity — and sheds light on one of the game’s darkest chapters, the steroid era. The Tenth Inning examines the stories of Baltimore Orioles Hall-of-Famer Cal Ripken Jr. (far right), Joe Torre (above, right), Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Pedro Martinez (at right), Ichiro Suzuki and Barry Bonds (above, left) and features commentary from an eclectic lineup of writers, broadcasters and fans, including Washington Post columnists George Will and Thomas Boswell, and Howard Bryant, Mike Barnicle, Bob Costas, Gerald Early, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Jon Miller and John Thorn. The documentary picks up where the series Baseball left off, introducing an array of players, teams and fans, celebrating the sport’s resilience and enduring appeal. The film explores developments in the game from the early 1990s to the present day, including the increasing dominance of Latino and Asian players; revelations about performance-enhancing
drugs; the rise of a new Yankee dynasty; the historic World Series victory of the Boston Red Sox; baseball’s skyrocketing profits; new stadiums; and wild card and inter-league play. Like the 1994 series, The Tenth Inning weaves the story of the sport with the story of the nation, using baseball as a mirror to reflect America at its best and its worst. “Baseball has changed so much in the last 15 years, but at the same time, the reason that the game is so enduring is that it is timeless,” said Ken Burns. “Like the original series, this film pays tribute to one of our nation’s greatest institutions. We celebrate tremendous athletic achievements and examine the humanity and diversity of the players, the dynamic relationship with the fans, and all the layers and nuances that make a seemingly simple exercise of hitting a ball with a stick infinitely fascinating.”

housands of bats, three home run records and one “curse” have been broken since Ken Burns and co-director Lynn Novick last explored the history of our national pastime with their landmark, nine-part 1994 documentary series Baseball, a co-production of Florentine Films and WETA that was seen by more than 43 million viewers, making it the mostwatched program in PBS history. Now, Burns and Novick update the series with the two-part, four-hour film The Tenth Inning, also created in partnership with WETA.
“We have worked hard to provide a human dimension to the recent history of the game — to appreciate the great athletes who have given so much joy to so many, and to understand the real-world forces shaping their decisions,” Lynn Novick said. “For us as filmmakers, it has been tremendously exciting, and challenging, to try to do justice to this complicated story, and to try to understand what it says about who we are as a people.” Visit pbs.org/tenthinning to learn more about the series, and visit ShopPBS.org to purchase a The Tenth Inning DVD and the updated edition of the companion book, Baseball. Corporate funding for The Tenth Inning is provided by Bank of America. Additional funding is provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the Public Broadcasting Service.

He built some of the first and most celebrated skyscrapers in the world; directed construction of the World’s Columbian Exposition that helped inspire the City Beautiful Movement in towns across America; and created urban plans for San Francisco; Washington, D.C; Chicago; Cleveland; and Manila and Baguio City in the Philippines, all before the modern profession of urban planning existed. documentary co-produced by Storyville Films, The Documentary Group and WETA chronicles the life and legend of the Marquis de Lafayette — a figure from both the American and French Revolutions who at one time was the most famous man in the world. The film examines why a wealthy young French aristocrat would leave the comforts of the court to help a fledgling nation on another continent fight for independence, the nature of the daring path he then set upon, and how the concept of liberty steered his choices in life. Lafayette’s life and quest to bring democracy to America and France is shared, in part, as recorded in his extensive letters and memoirs; those of his wife, Adrienne de Noailles; and those of his close friend, George Washington. The documentary’s narrative is also driven by a present-day search by Lafayette’s descendant, Sabine Renault-Sabloniere, to find out more about her ancestor.

ust as Dr. Seuss’ original book “The Cat in the Hat” introduced children to reading, a new series based on the book will encourage science learning for preschoolers nationwide. Voiced by award-winning actor Martin Short, Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat guides friends Sally and Nick — with a little help from the Fish, Thing 1 and Thing 2 — on fun-filled adventures where they make natural-science discoveries, from how bees make honey to why owls sleep during the day. The kids figure things out by observing, collecting and managing clues, making connections, constructing and evaluating theories, and having discussions — all in an age-appropriate manner. Filled with both adventure and whimsy, the programs appeal to children’s natural curiosity, and engage them in the process of scientific exploration and discovery. The series, created in association with Dr. Seuss Enterprises, premieres Tuesday, September 7. Note: You’ll also find children’s programming on WETA TV 26 each morning, 5 a.m.–noon.
