ore than a half-century ago, during an era of segregation and unequal access to education, WETA was conceived to employ television as a teaching tool aimed at fostering lifelong learning for all who chose to tune in. In those days, educational television programming was largely absent from the commercial network airwaves, and publisher Willard Kiplinger, former Arlington School Board member Elizabeth Campbell and a group of likeminded visionaries worked hard to get WETA TV 26 on the air in Greater Washington in order to provide enriching viewing alternatives — especially for children. Fifty years hence, the education of children remains at the core of WETA’s mission of public service; and this month, on the pages of this magazine, we spotlight the special services that we offer for the benefit of area youngsters. Our WETA Kids channel and its acclaimed research-based programming provide an enriching, trusted viewing environment, featuring some of the nation’s top-rated programs for preschoolers and primary school-age children. Our remarkable learning media websites offer parents and caregivers trusted resources on literacy, bilingual education, learning disabilities and ADHD. And our educational outreach in the community helps teachers and caregivers use WETA programming to foster literacy and learning. Learn what your membership helps WETA do for children, and enjoy our many other intriguing broadcasts on WETA Television and Classical WETA 90.9 FM this month. Thank you for your support of WETA.

remiering in the days leading up to Earth Day, a new American Experience film from Stephen Ives (who partnered with WETA to create both the film Reporting America at War and, with Ken Burns, the series The West) explores how the tension between technological achievement and environmental impact hangs over the legacy of Grand Coulee Dam. The great public works project, the largest hydroelectric power-producing facility in the world when completed in 1941, played a central role in transforming the Pacific Northwest, harnessing the power of the mighty Columbia River and diverting its waters for irrigation projects. But the dam barred one of the greatest salmon rivers in the world, obliterating one of the globe’s largest natural fish populations; and deprived of the salmon — their most important resource — the native people who lived along the Columbia witnessed a profound cultural decline. Tune in as well this month for American Experience episodes that spotlight the arduous construction of the Panama Canal (April 3, 9:30 p.m.) in another film by Ives — and the development of the Hoover Dam (April 17, 9 p.m.), which transformed the American Southwest. Exclusive corporate funding for American Experience is provided by Liberty Mutual Insurance. Major funding is provided by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Additional funding for Grand Coulee Dam is provided by The Kendeda Fund, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and public television viewers.

Doc Martin, Series 5 Is Here!

M

premieres Saturday, April 28 at 9:33 p.m.

artin Clunes returns for the much-awaited fifth season of British comic drama Doc Martin as the brash, abrasive doctor Martin Ellingham, whose blunt opinions and tactless manner make waves in a small community on England’s Cornish coast. Ellingham, once a celebrated London surgeon, fled his position after developing a phobia to blood. After retraining as a general practitioner, he replaced the deceased local doctor in the sleepy village of Portwenn, treating the ailments of the decidedly quirky locals. As the fourth season ended, Ellingham’s estranged partner, Portwenn schoolteacher Louisa Glasson (Caroline Catz) gave birth to their child as the doctor planned to return to London to resume his high-flying career. But the baby’s arrival changes life dramatically. In Series Five, the doctor tries to sort out his personal life, while dealing with the strange cases and stranger personalities of Portwenn.

Serving Children in W

ETA’s fundamental mission is to provide access to education and to promote lifelong learning — and especially to serve the youngest members of our community. For 50 years, with the generous support of members and funding partners, the station has harnessed the power of television to help educate children throughout Greater Washington, bringing enriching, trusted programming to this important constituency. WETA also produces a wealth of informative resources for parents and teachers to help them educate the children in their care.

Early Educational Programming Five decades ago, WETA TV 26 was founded to provide an educational alternative to commercial media, and the station’s earliest broadcasts were developed for use in local schools. WETA’s very first production was the 1958 elementary school series Time for Science; programs that followed, such as Elementary Spanish, Children’s Literature and Window on Our World, helped established a long tradition of creating educational programming. In the mid 1960s, WETA produced such programs as Sets and Systems, introducing Washington-area grade school teachers to new methods of teaching mathematics; Youth Wants to Know, featuring students exploring issues of the day; and What in the World?, an archaeology quiz game. The 1964

2 april 2012

program English — Fact and Fancy earned WETA its very first Emmy Award; and the reading series Cover to Cover premiered in 1965 and ran on TV 26 for years. Then came Sesame Street in 1969, The Electric Company in 1971, Zoom in 1972, and other national PBS children’s programming that brought new creativity, energy and educational research to the flourishing medium in public television. A half-century hence, WETA continues to present an impressive portfolio of broadcasts just for children, composed principally of PBS’s sterling content for youngsters. These offerings are among the most popular children’s programs on television today.

Award-Winning Television Amid a dizzying program landscape in commercial and cable television, WETA’s educational broadcasts have long provided a safe haven that features age-appropriate content for preschool and early elementary schoolage viewers. The station currently airs children’s programming each morning on WETA TV 26, but also devotes an entire channel — WETA Kids — to programming exclusively for young viewers, around the clock. Broadcasts present awardwinning, diverse educational series such as Sesame Street, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Clifford The Big Red Dog, Curious George, WordWorld, Dinosaur Train, Martha Speaks, WordGirl and Super WHY! These offerings promote literacy and values-based learning, teach social skills and life lessons, and inspire curiosity about the world and a love of learning. Programs spotlight culture and language learning (Maya & Miguel), and foster science learning (Sid the Science Kid), mathematics skills (Cyberchase), natural sciences inquiry (Wild Kratts and The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!) and much more. This fall, watch for Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, a new series from the Fred Rogers Company.

WETA’s Acclaimed Learning Media Websites WETA also serves children and their families beyond the station’s broadcasts. Among the important educational resources developed by the station are four award-winning, WETA-created educational websites that offer free, trusted online resources for parents and educators nationwide. AdLit.org is an acclaimed national multimedia project aimed at helping struggling adolescent readers and writers. ColorinColorado.org, a bilingual English-Spanish site, presents advice and resources to aid young English language learners. LDOnLine.org is the world’s leading website on learning disabilities and ADHD. And multimedia literacy initiative Reading Rockets features a videorich website — ReadingRockets.org — that has attracted millions of visitors to its reading resources for parents and educators of young children.

mong the early educational series on public broadcasting nationwide was the iconic program Sesame Street, which went on the air in 1969 and has since educated generations of American preschoolers. More than 40 years later, the beloved program remains in WETA Television’s on-air offerings. Among the keys to the program’s success are Sesame Street’s popular muppet characters, made famous by creative genius Jim Henson as an educational tool with which to engage and entertain children. This month, film series Independent Lens features an acclaimed documentary that spotlights Baltimorean Kevin Clash (above), the man behind one of the most adored muppets, a furry red monster named Elmo. Being Elmo explores his story and chronicles the meteoric rise of Jim Henson in the process. Narrated by Whoopi Goldberg, Being Elmo offers a rare, behind-the-scenes look at Sesame Street and the Jim Henson legacy.

Through the WETA Ready To Learn (RTL) initiative, WETA aids families, caregivers and teachers in learning how to use WETA children’s television programming to help young viewers learn to read. WETA staff conduct nearly 100 RTL literacy workshops each year, distributing thousands of books and training a host of participants who collectively care for more than 7,500 area children. Additional Where Literacy Begins workshops prepare caregivers of infants and toddlers to foster learning. In the community, WETA sponsors public events throughout the area, giving children the chance to meet beloved characters from WETA Kids programming — and staff participate in such events as Read Across America Day, reading to local youngsters in area schools. The station is also participating in “American Graduate,” a Corporation for Public Broadcasting initiative that is combating the drop-out crisis among American high school students.

Independent Lens is curated by ITVS and PBS and is funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, with additional funding provided by PBS and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Rely on WETA For a half-century, WETA TV 26 has engaged and inspired young viewers with educational programming that has presented stimulating adventures in learning; and the broadcast service and educational resources developed by the station for children will long remain centerpieces of WETA’s public broadcasting mission. Parents and educators alike can continue to rely on WETA to help empower children for success in school and life. Tune in, and log on to weta.org, and explore what WETA has to offer in service to children in Greater Washington and beyond.

Sid the Science Kid: Rock & Roll Easter

airs Tuesday, April 3 on the WETA Kids channel

S

id the Science Kid is an educational animated television series, coproduced by The Jim Henson Company, which uses comedy to promote exploration, discovery and science readiness among preschoolers. The series features a practical in-school science curriculum, using music and humor to celebrate children’s natural curiosity about science in everyday life. Each episode begins with a new question (“Why are my shoes shrinking?” “Why do bananas get mushy?”) and Sid seeks answers. In a new special Easter-themed episode, “Rock & Roll Easter,” Sid and his friends hunt for Easter eggs in the backyard and find other treasures — interesting rocks. Major funding for Sid the Science Kid is provided by The Boeing Company, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and VINCI Early Learning Systems. Additional funding is provided by MetLife Foundation, The Rose Hills Foundation, the S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation, the Johnny Carson Foundation and The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations.
