ETA presents new episodes of popular mystery-dramas in April as Series VIII of Midsomer Murders and Series II of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries premiere on WETA Television. In Midsomer Murders, airing each Thursday at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 6:30 p.m., the rural countryside of a fictional county in England provides the backdrop for investigations based on the novels of Caroline Graham. At the center of the Midsomer Murders cases are Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby (John Nettles) and Detective Sergeant Dan Scott (John Hopkins). Series VIII begins April 24 (April 28 on WETA UK). Also in April, Australian private investigator Miss Phryne Fisher is back in the second series of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. Essie Davis portrays the independent, unflappable lady detective. The crime drama explores the subcultures of 1920s Melbourne. From the shadowy lanes of the city to the halls of academia, from high-class brothels to haute couture, Fisher defends the innocent and juggles admirers with her usual panache.

n The Address, acclaimed filmmaker Ken Burns and WETA tell the story of the Gettysburg Address and the tiny Greenwood School in Putney, Vermont, where each year the roughly 50 students, boys from the ages of 11 to 17, are encouraged to memorize, practice and recite President Lincoln’s immortal words in a rite of passage that is a school tradition. This would be a daunting assignment for any student, but the boys at Greenwood all face a range of complex learning differences that have made their personal, academic and social progress extremely challenging. Burns embedded camera crews at the school for a semester to chronicle the boys’ struggle to learn the famous American speech and deliver it in a public recitation. The inspiring documentary, a co-production of WETA and Florentine Films, reveals how the historic speech motivates and engages these students, and shows them heroically confronting past failures and humiliations. hat would it be like to go inside the mind of an animal? We have all gazed into a creature’s eyes and wondered: What is it thinking about? What does it really know? Now, the science of animal cognition is revealing real evidence about how animals understand the world around them, uncovering their remarkable problem-solving abilities and exploring the complexity of their powers of communication and their emotions. In the three-part miniseries “Inside Animal Minds,” science series NOVA explores these breakthroughs through the eyes of three iconic creatures: birds (“Bird Genius,” April 9), dogs (“Dogs & Super Senses,” April 16) and dolphins (“Who’s the Smartest?,” April 23).

hy does the human body look and function the way it does? The evolution of humans can be traced into the distant past, to the earliest forms of animal life on water and land. It took hundreds of millions of years for the human body to take shape, and each of us carries the genetic imprint of creatures that lived ages ago. From those creatures, we inherited our most remarkable features, as well as quirks. A new three-part series, Your Inner Fish, hosted by University of Chicago paleobiologist Dr. Neil Shubin and based on his best-selling 2009 book of the same name, explores the science of how the human body developed over time. Each episode — Your Inner Fish (April 9), Your Inner Reptile (April 16) and Your Inner Monkey (April 23) — assembles evidence from comparative anatomy, fossils, genetics and embryology to explore why we’re built the way we are.

President and Mrs. Obama hosted the event, taped in the East Room of the White House on March 6. The hour-long, all-star concert, produced by WETA in association with AEG Ehrlich Ventures and The GRAMMY Museum, airs nationwide on PBS stations and locally on WETA TV 26 and WETA HD on April 7 at 9 p.m. Also onstage at the White House were Tessanne Chin, Melissa Etheridge, Ariana Grande and Jill Scott, with Greg Phillinganes as music director. The program is the 52nd production in the long-running, Emmy Award-nominated WETA series In Performance at the White House. memorable songs — featuring such classics as “Over the Rainbow,” “I Never Loved a Man (The Way That I Love You),” “Last Dance,” “Rock Steady,” “Lady Marmalade” and “Proud Mary.” In addition to the Women of Soul concert, the White House also hosted “I’m Every Woman: The History of Women in Soul,” an educational workshop produced by The GRAMMY Museum in cooperation with WETA’s series. More than 120 middle school, high school and college-level students from across the country participated. The workshop can be viewed online at whitehouse.gov. The GRAMMY Museum is also offering downloadable curriculum and educational materials for middle and high school teachers — resources are available at grammymuseum.org and pbs.org/whitehouse. Women of Soul is the twelfth In Performance at the White House program produced during President Barack Obama’s administration. In Performance at the White House has been produced by WETA since 1978, spanning every administration since that of President Carter and embracing virtually every genre of American performance: pop, country, gospel, jazz, theatre and dance among them. The series was created to showcase the rich fabric of American culture in the setting of the nation’s most famous home. Following Women of Soul, WETA reprises the 2011 production The Motown Sound: In Performance at the White House at 10 p.m. on April 7. 7:00 PBS NEWSHOUR 8:00 THE STORY OF THE JEWS WITH SIMON SCHAMA — Noted historian, author and critic Simon Schama explores the Jewish experience from ancient times to the present day. Part 3 of 5. A Leap of Faith. Simon Schama explores the hopeful time when Enlightenment thinkers and revolutionary armies brought ghetto walls crashing down — allowing Jews to weave their wisdom, creativity and energies into the fabric of modern life in Europe. However, the remarkably successful integration of Jewish talent into the mainstream of European culture and commerce stirred up the ghosts of ancient prejudice, decked out in the new clothes of romantic nationalism and the pseudo-science of anti-Semitism. Schama plunges into the lost world of the shtetl, the Jewish towns and villages sewn across the hinterlands of Eastern Europe, which became the seedbed of a uniquely Jewish culture. Shtetl culture would make its mark on the modern world, from the revolutionary politics of the Soviet Union to the mass culture of Tin Pan Alley and Hollywood. It was also the birthplace of Hasidism, the most visible, iconic and, arguably, most misunderstood expression of Jewish faith and fervor. The program returns to Eastern Europe in 1940, when the “final solution” began to grind the shtetl world into dust and ash. Repeats Wed 4/2, 4pm; Thur 4/3, 2pm; Sun 4/6, 12:30pm 10:00 THE STORY OF THE JEWS WITH SIMON SCHAMA — Part 5 of 5. Return. Mixing personal recollection with epic history, Schama tells the story of the personalities and events that turned the Zionist dream of creating a modern state of Israel into reality — and the consequences for the world. The film explores the tension between the high ideals and dire necessities that led to the creation of a Jewish

From bad behavior, to sex scandals, from warring hotel dynasties to the outrageous extravagances of rich and famous guests, Grant offers a portrait of a fascinating and mostly hidden world. He explores hotels such as the George V in Paris, the Four Seasons in New York, the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles, the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and the Savoy in London — setting out to discover what makes these establishments so unique — and interviewing some of the biggest names in the luxury hotel industry. The series wraps up with two location-centered specials spotlighting hotels of Ireland and the French Riviera.

ffable Scottish comedian/actor Billy Connolly (Mrs. Brown, Brave) offers a new perspective on a great American highway, hitting the road to explore Route 66, a symbol of the American heartland that passes through treasured sites of American history, somber memorials of American tragedies, and of course, bizarre American tourist traps. Visiting these landmarks of the past and the people of the present, Billy Connolly’s Route 66 explores American life from cultural, historical and personal perspectives. In the four-part series, Connolly motorcycles the iconic 2,488-mile journey from Chicago to Santa Monica. With his unrivaled ability to spin a great yarn, he brings to life both the big and small moments of the American story — the world changing events and the comic asides.

he ornate, dark wood-paneled Music Room at the Phillips Collection sets the stage for this month’s local performances on the Classical WETA 90.9 FM broadcast Front Row Washington, airing Monday nights at 9 p.m. On April 7, we begin the first of four Phillips Collection recitals with a performance by pianist and Tashkent native Behzod Abduraimov, who, at the age of 19, won First Prize at the 2009 London International Piano Competition. He performs two Beethoven Calder sonatas, including the moving “AppasQuartet sionata” sonata in F minor, as well as Schubert’s Impromptu in G-flat Major, Op. 90, No. 3, and Maurice Ravel’s Gaspard de la nuit. On Monday, April 14, we present award-winning clarinetist and Juilliard graduate Moran Katz. Her varied recital with pianist Amy Yang features Brahms’ Sonata in E-flat Major, Op. 120 No. 2, Romances by Clara Schumann, Four Pieces by Alban Berg, Francis Poulenc’s Sonata for Clarinet and Piano, and Paul Schoenfield’s Sonatina for Klezmer clarinet and piano. If you’ve never seen our next performer in concert, you’ll want to tune in Monday night, April 21 at 9 p.m. to hear pianist Anne-Marie McDermott. A consummate soloist as well as chamber musician, Ms. McDermott has enthralled audiences around the globe for more than 25 years. Her Phillips Collection recital begins with Haydn’s Sonata in G Major, Hob. XVI: 40 and continues with an astonishing, technically demanding work composed expressly for her by Charles Wuorinen, the Fourth Piano Sonata in Four Movements. Ms. McDermott concludes with one of her specialties, the Piano Sonata No. 6 in A Major, Op. 82, by Sergei Prokofiev. The brilliant Calder Quartet wraps up our presentation of Phillips Collection recitals with Franz Schubert’s iconic “Death and the Maiden” string quartet, selections from contemporary British composer Thomas Adès’ Arcadiana and Béla Barók’s String Quartet No. 2, Op. 17.

t’s a musical feast at — and from — Washington National Cathedral this month, especially on April 13, when the Washington National Cathedral Combined Choirs and Baroque Orchestra, conducted by Michael McCarthy, perform Bach’s St. John Passion in the afternoon at the Cathedral. Holy Week performances of the St. John Passion and Christmastime performances of Handel’s oratorio Messiah have become traditions at the Cathedral, and we’re delighted that these performances are establishing traditions on our weekly Classical WETA 90.9 FM broadcast Choral Showcase too. On Sunday, April 6 at 9 p.m., we air last year’s Holy Week performance of St. John Passion at the Cathedral; then, on April 13 at 9 p.m., we present Handel’s oratorio Messiah from last December’s Cathedral performance. On April 20, Easter Sunday, Choral Showcase features a program that includes Bach’s Easter Oratorio, and several “Alleluia” settings, including a beautifully famous one by American composer Randall Thompson. The performance of the Thompson is by the Handel and Haydn Society of Boston, which gave the American premieres of Messiah, Bach’s St. Matthew Passion and Haydn’s Creation. The second oldest performance organization in America after the Marine Band, the Society celebrates 200 years in 2015.

Greek violinist Leonidas Kavakos’ career was launched when he won the International Sibelius Competition at the age of 18. By the time he was Jean 21, Kavakos had also won first prize in Sibelius the Naumberg and Paganini contests. “Known for decades as a musician’s violinist of wide-ranging curiosity and musicianship,” (The Boston Musical Intelligencer) and “a violinist who in terms of sheer statuesque power and purity of tone, is surely peerless” (The Telegraph), Kavakos addresses his prodigious interpretative skills to Brahms’ Violin Concerto in D Major, Op.77, which rounds out the program. From stunning sunrises to dazzling constellations — from magnificent trombones to the splendor of the Brahms’ Violin Concerto, April’s NSO Showcase on Classical WETA celebrates the unique magic of the Nordic spirit.

hristoph Eschenbach is on the podium this month for a Nordic-themed NSO Showcase, airing Wednesday, April 2 at 9 p.m. on Classical WETA 90.9 FM. All performances featured on the April broadcast of the Classical WETA production were recorded live in the Concert Hall of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. On the April broadcast, we feature music from two Finnish composers. Around the turn of the last century, Jean Sibelius took a sleigh ride from Helsinki to Kerava and witnessed a spectacular sunrise, which he set to equally evocative music in his 1908 tone poem Night Ride and Sunrise, Op. 55. Contemporary composer Kaija Saariaho, born in Helsinki in 1952, also takes inspiration from the night sky in her 2002 composition, Orion — the myth about the Greek hunter who ends up as a constellation. A composer of powerful and mystical soundscapes, Saariaho was named “2008 Musician of the Year” by Musical America because she is “among the few contemporary composers to achieve public acclaim as well as universal critical respect.” Also featured on NSO Showcase is Sibelius’ final symphony, Symphony No. 7 in C Major, Op. 105. In it, the composer realized his quest for compression and concision, building this minimalist one-movement symphony around a magnificent and justly famous trombone theme, said to represent his wife, Aino.
