his month, I am very proud that in service to the American public, WETA will premiere the fascinating new documentary series Ken Burns Presents CANCER: THE EMPEROR OF ALL MALADIES A Film By Barak Goodman on March 30–31 and April 1 on WETA TV 26/HD and on PBS stations nationwide. This important film — an engaging blend of history, science and human stories — and its extensive accompanying community engagement initiative have been made possible by extraordinary partnerships. We have been delighted to collaborate on the project with our good friend Ken Burns and Florentine Films; with acclaimed filmmaker Barak Goodman and Ark Media, with Pam Williams at Laura Ziskin Pictures; with physician and cancer researcher Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee, upon whose Pulitzer Prize-winning book “The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer” the film is based; and with the organization Stand Up to Cancer (SU2C), a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF), and an unprecedented array of incredible project supporters (please note them all, listed on the back cover). This project is very personal to me as a cancer survivor — as it is to Ken, who lost his mother to cancer when he was very Barak Goodman, Siddhartha young. My journey began in early 2005 with a very late diagnoMukherjee and Ken Burns sis of advanced cancer followed by years of intensive, successful treatment. In 2010, during a hospital stay, I was riveted by Sid’s amazing book, which finally defined for me the enemy I was fighting. I wanted to share this information with the widest possible audience. My cancer led me to Sid Mukherjee and to SU2C, whose co-founder, acclaimed film producer Laura Ziskin, successfully had urged EIF to obtain the rights to the book shortly after its publication. We lost Laura to cancer in 2011, but not before she knew that our shared dream of making this film would become a reality. Through this film and the nationwide engagement campaign, all of us involved with this project hope to profoundly reshape Americans’ understanding of this affliction and to help people know their options and seek treatment early. Cancer will touch everyone in some way. The statistics are staggering: in our lifetimes, 1 in 2 men, 1 in 3 women, and 1 in 300 children will have the disease. Let us bring conversations about cancer into the open, so that we become better advocates for ourselves, our loved ones and our society.

orld-renowned conductor Sir Gilbert Levine leads a very special Washington performance in the television and radio programs A Celebration of Peace Through Music, respectively, on WETA TV 26/HD and on Classical WETA 90.9 FM in April during Holy Week, Easter and Passover. Conceived by Maestro Levine, these powerful programs feature moving musical tributes to Pope John XXIII, Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis, honoring those spiritual leaders’ commitment to peace and interfaith understanding. We at WETA have been delighted to join our distinguished partners Georgetown University President John J. DeGioia and Board Chairman Paul Tagliabue; the Archdiocese of Washington; and the embassies of Poland, Italy, Argentina and the Holy See in bringing this momentous concert event to air. It is our great privilege to present these productions, with their important message of tolerance and peace, to audiences in Greater Washington and around the country.

new Masterpiece miniseries, Wolf Hall, based on Hilary Mantel’s Booker Prize-winning novels, joins the Sunday drama lineup in April. The film stars Mark Rylance (Twelfth Night) and Damian Lewis (Homeland), at right. This television event presents a provocative portrait of Thomas Cromwell (played by Rylance) — the brilliant, enigmatic consigliere to England’s King Henry VIII — as he maneuvers within the Tudor court. Lewis portrays the king, haunted by his brother’s premature death and obsessed with protecting the Tudor dynasty by securing his succession with a male heir to the throne. The cast includes Claire Foy (Little Dorrit) as future queen Anne Boleyn. BAFTA Award-winner Peter Kosminsky directs the production, adapted by Oscar nominee Peter Straughan (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy).

he monumental new WETA co-production Ken Burns Presents CANCER: THE EMPEROR OF ALL MALADIES A Film By Barak Goodman tells the comprehensive story of cancer, from its first description thousands of years ago in an ancient Egyptian scroll to the laboratories of modern research institutions. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by cancer physician and researcher Siddhartha Mukherjee, the three-part, six-hour film, airing March 30, 31 and April 1, interweaves a sweeping historical narrative about the disease with intimate stories about contemporary patients and an investigation into the latest scientific

breakthroughs that may have brought us, at long last, within sight of lasting cures. The project Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies comes at a moment when cancer research offers new hope. The film matches the epic scale of the disease, reshaping the way cancer is viewed and stripping away some of the fear and misunderstanding that have long surrounded it. The series examines cancer with a cellular biologist’s precision, a historian’s perspective and a biographer’s passion, weaving together a historical documentary, an intimate vérité film, and a scientific report.

My work as a filmmaker is directly linked to the death of my mother from cancer when I was 11. From the age of three, I watched her suffer and struggle with this awful disease, forever creating for me a desire to explore the past and to listen deeply to the stories that we all have to tell. I am honored to tell this story: The history of cancer. The future of cancer. Your story. Our story. — Ken Burns
The Story The battle against cancer is one of the longest-running wars in human history. Fought with razor-sharp scalpels, invisible rays and lethal poisons, its battlegrounds are deep within the human cell. Its casualties number in the hundreds of millions: nearly one in two men and one in three women will fight cancer directly; nearly everyone will feel its collateral damage. The story of the war on cancer spans centuries and continents — a scientific story but also a deeply human narrative of doctors, researchers and especially patients who, through courage, suffering and occasional hubris, pushed the boundaries of knowledge. These people helped define cancer as the scourge of the modern age and then mobilized the federal government and private industry to wage an all-out campaign against it — a campaign still being fought today.
The film is made possible by an unprecedented array of project supporters dedicated to fostering a better understanding of cancer and battling the disease. Ken Burns Presents CANCER: THE EMPEROR OF ALL MALADIES A Film by Barak Goodman is made possible by project supporters Genentech; Cancer Treatment Centers of America; Siemens; David H. Koch; Bristol-Myers Squibb; the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation; Kovler Fund; The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations; the American Association for Cancer Research; the American Cancer Society; The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society; Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C), a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation; the Corporation for Public Broadcasting; and PBS. Funding for the local broadcast of the film is made possible by the American Association for Cancer Research and GEICO.
Origins of the Project The project Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies began in 2010. Hollywood producer Laura Ziskin (Pretty Woman, Spider-Man) — a co-founder of the nationwide organization Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C), a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) — had envisioned producing a documentary about cancer from the time she had been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004. Having read an advanced review of Siddhartha Mukherjee’s book, Ziskin contacted the author, who then awarded the television and film rights to the Entertainment Industry Foundation for its Stand Up To Cancer initiative in December 2010, shortly after the book was published. Simultaneously, WETA President and CEO Sharon Percy Rockefeller read the book during her treatment for cancer at The Johns Hopkins Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center in Baltimore. Rockefeller spoke about the book with Burns, who lost his mother to cancer when he was 11 years old. The two got in touch with Ziskin to discuss the project, and in early 2011 they brought on filmmaker Barak Goodman and moved forward with (continued on page 4)

the film. Ziskin, who lived with cancer for seven years, died in June 2011, knowing the film would be made. Five years in the making, the series is a production of Florentine Films, Laura Ziskin Pictures and WETA, in association with Ark Media. Longtime WETA collaborator Ken Burns is executive producer and senior creative consultant. The film was written by Geoffrey Ward and Ken Burns, and Barak Goodman and David Blistein — and is produced and directed by filmmaker Barak Goodman, co-founder of Ark Media. Executive producers are Dalton Delan, David S. Thompson, Pamela Oas Williams and Laura Ziskin.
Strides and Setbacks The film’s three episodes explore the historical search for a cure. Episode 1 highlights the story of Sidney Farber, who, defying conventional wisdom in the late 1940s, introduced the modern era of chemotherapy, eventually galvanizing a full-scale national campaign against the disease. Episode 2 picks up the story in the wake of the declaration of a “war on cancer” by Richard Nixon in 1971 and explores the story through the 1990s, when advances in research finally began to translate into more precise targeted therapies. Episode 3 follows the story at another

Cancer is built into us: the genes that unmoor normal cell division are not foreign to our bodies but rather mutated, distorted versions of the very genes that allow us to grow, to adapt, to recover, to repair — to live. Malignant growth and normal growth are so genetically intertwined that unbraiding the two is one of the most significant scientific challenges faced by our species. If we seek immortality, then so, too, in a rather perverse sense, does the cancer cell. — Siddhartha Mukherjee
moment of buoyant optimism — and setback — in the cancer world, when scientists believed they had made a particularly promising breakthrough, cracking the essential mystery of the malignant cell. As cancer revealed new layers of complexity and an array of unforeseen defenses, scientists went back to work, and the story explores how their efforts paid off by the second decade of the 2000s. Interwoven throughout the three episodes are stories of patients, from a 14-month-old and a six-year-old diagnosed with leukemia to a surgical oncologist contending with invasive cancer to a NASCAR mechanic afflicted with the disease. See pages 9–10 for complete episode descriptions.
Engage on the Web WETA has created a website, CancerFilms.org, that presents an array of companion resources related to the film. The website is a place for a variety of groups — such as cancer survivors, patients, family and friends; caretakers, health care professionals and the research community; historians, educators and students — to understand the past, present and future of cancer in an interactive way. Also learn more about the film and the project on Twitter via @CancerFilm and #CancerFilm, and visit the project on Facebook at facebook.com/CancerFilm.
CancerFilms.org The expansive website features social and interactive media components. Among these are: • Nearly two dozen webcast short films executive produced by Ken Burns and created by Redglass Pictures. The films present the intimate stories of cancer patients, caregivers, researchers and survivors — and explore ideas and pose questions related to the documentary film. Story contributors include actors Maura Tierney and Terrence Howard. • An interactive timeline, allowing users to explore the fight against cancer through video and other content that explains medical advances and profiles the people who have been instrumental in shaping the fight against cancer over time. • A place to share your story — visit an interactive story wall and connect with others. Read, share and experience stories of others and the impact of cancer on their lives.
A National Conversation To accompany the film, WETA has developed an extraordinary, comprehensive national community engagement campaign in partnership with Stand Up To Cancer, a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, and an unprecedented array of other project supporters. Working with community educational, medical and cancer entities, the project partners and supporters have organized more than 90 film screenings, facilitating discussions around the nation about cancer issues. WETA has also created a curriculum based on the film that will be shared with teachers in schools throughout the country. The project includes a companion radio series, Living Cancer, broadcast nationally on NPR and produced by New York City public radio broadcaster WNYC, the national radio partner on the project. Find the broadcasts at npr.org — the two week-long series premiered on NPR’s Morning Edition and All Things Considered, illuminating the frontiers of cancer research and treatment through personal stories of patients, doctors and scientists.

9:00 CANCER: THE EMPEROR OF ALL MALADIES — A three-part film — a co-production of Florentine Films, Laura Ziskin Pictures and WETA, in association with Ark Media — based on an acclaimed book by Siddhartha Mukherjee tells the story of cancer from ancient times to today. The series, executive produced by Ken Burns and produced and directed by Barak Goodman, interweaves a sweeping historical narrative with stories about contemporary patients and an investigation into the latest scientific breakthroughs. Part 1 of 3. Magic Bullets, directed by Jack Youngelson. The search for a “cure” for cancer is the greatest epic in the history of science, spanning centuries and continents. This episode follows that centuries-long search, highlighting the story of Sidney Farber, who in the late 1940s introduces the modern era of chemotherapy, eventually galvanizing a “war on cancer.” Interwoven is the contemporary story of a young girl diagnosed with leukemia. 9:00 CANCER: THE EMPEROR OF ALL MALADIES — The WETA co-production continues. Part 3 of 3. Finding the Achilles Heel, directed by Chris Durrance. This episode starts at a moment of optimism: Scientists believe they have cracked the mystery of the malignant cell, and the first targeted therapies have been developed. But very quickly cancer reveals new layers of complexity and a formidable array of defenses. Many call for a new focus on prevention and early detection as the most promising fronts in the war on cancer. By the second decade of the 2000s, the complexity of the cancer cell yields to a more ordered picture, revealing new vulnerabilities and avenues of attack. Perhaps most exciting is the prospect of harnessing the human immune system to defeat cancer. A NASCAR mechanic with melanoma and a six-year-old with leukemia are pioneers in new immunotherapy treatments, which the documentary follows as their stories unfold. BBC ©2014
rime investigator Father Brown (Mark Williams, Harry Potter, Dr. Who) cycles back to solve more mysteries in Kembleford, a sleepy Cotswold village, in the charming BBC series based on the short stories of G.K. Chesterton. The series is set in 1950s England in a countryside dotted with small villages, rural parish churches and large country houses. Each of the 15 new episodes sees Father Brown investigate a crime in his own particular way, using intuition and psychology. Once again, the enigmatic priest is aided by his no-nonsense parish secretary Mrs. McCarthy (Sorcha Cusack), glamorous socialite Lady Felicia Montague (Nancy Carroll) and her chauffeur Sid (Alex Price). Tom Chambers portrays local detective Inspector Sullivan. In this season, Father Brown finds himself embroiled with the Secret Service; goes undercover into a theological college to flush out a killer; probes an audacious art heist by an old adversary; and contends with a surprising fugitive, wanted for murder and taking sanctuary in the parish.

P
opular British crime drama Vera is back for a fifth season of four episodes. Based on the characters from the popular series of novels by Ann Cleeves, the production by ITV/Gallowgate follows the obsessive and driven Detective Chief Inspector (DCI) Vera Stanhope as she tries to crack some of the toughest cases in Northumberland. Brenda Blethyn reprises her role as the central character, whose offbeat manner and frumpy appearance belie a knack for catching killers; however, she’ll be getting a new sidekick in Season 5. Cast member David Leon, who played Vera’s right-hand man Joe Ashworth, has departed the show, as his character has received a promotion. Vera is joined instead by DS Aiden Healey, played by Kenny Doughty. Episode One follows Vera and Aiden as they investigate a mysterious death at a caravan park.
