asterpiece presents two new drama adaptations and reprises a classic in April. ocally focused WETA TV 26 series Check, Please! DC returns with six new episodes beginning April 16, showcasing the diner’s perspective on the diverse food scene in Greater Washington and featuring restaurant tips from actual customers. Giving knowledgeable local diners a chance to share their experiences in one of the nation’s hottest food destinations, the programs spotlight a wide range of neighborhood gems and cuisines throughout the District, Maryland and Virginia. The series also shares cocktail recipes from prominent establishments, in addition to intriguing food facts. The new, half-hour programs air Mondays at 9 p.m., hosted by Washington, D.C., restaurateur Rose Previte (center left, above). In Check, Please! DC, viewers get an unfiltered look at local restaurants via a panel of citizen reviewers who share their opinions. Each episode features
three guests who recommend one dining spot for review by the other two guests. After anonymously trying each restaurant recommendation, the guests join the show’s host in-studio to discuss their experiences together. This month, Check, Please! DC presents journeys of culinary discovery that include a traditional biergarten, Caribbean flavors, eclectic Asian cuisine, local pizza, homestyle Indian fare, Mexican classics, and much more. WETA TV 26 has made television explorations of local food and culture a tradition, most recently via programs such as WETA Neighborhoods and Neighborhood Eats. WETA debuted Check, Please! DC on WETA TV 26/HD last fall and continues to accept applications online for guest reviewers on the production, which tapes at the station’s television studio in Arlington, Virginia. New weekly public affairs program produced by WETA airs Fridays at 8:30 p.m. starting April 13 on WETA TV 26/HD

n Principle, a new weekly public affairs series created by WETA, examines how history, culture, faith and politics influence the larger debates taking place in America today. Michael Gerson and Amy Holmes co-host the WETA production, joining leading thinkers from across the ideological spectrum in probing the framework of today’s news and political conversations. Taped in the WETA television studios in Arlington, Virginia, the series’ half-hour programs premiere Friday, April 13 at 8:30 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD and other PBS stations nationwide, airing for eight weeks after WETA production Washington Week. Gerson, a frequent contributor to PBS NewsHour, a syndicated Washington Post columnist and author of the book Heroic Conservatism, and Holmes, a political news commentator formerly of MSNBC and TheBlaze TV and Radio Network, explore contemporary topics through discussions with guests from the worlds of politics, policy, the arts and academia. “This is a time when big, fundamental issues — about identity, about citizenship, about how we define our country — are being debated in American life,” said Gerson. “We need serious dialogue that stands in contrast to the degraded discourse so common in American politics right now. On In Principle, we intend to engage newsmakers and culture shapers at a deeper level, exploring their beliefs and motivations in a way viewers might not get in other formats on television. In Principle is going to be honest, reflective, deep-dive TV.” Series co-hosts Michael Gerson and Amy Holmes “We need a place where we can have thoughtful, reasonable, in-depth conversations about politics, policy, culture — you name it — where we’re really talking to each other instead of shouting at each other,” said Holmes. “It’s not about shouting, it’s about talking and listening and learning — I want our viewers to feel it was always time well spent, so that they come away saying, ‘I learned something that I didn’t know before.’” Gerson was a top aide to President George W. Bush, whom he served as assistant to the president for policy and strategic planning. Prior to that appointment, he served in the Bush Administration as deputy assistant to the president and director of presidential speechwriting and assistant to the president for speechwriting and policy adviser. He is also a co-author of City of Man: Religion and Politics in a New Era. Holmes was a speechwriter for former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist. She has appeared regularly as a political commentator on a wide array of networks and programs, including CNN, Fox, NBC, CBS and NPR. In Principle joins the WETA public affairs portfolio that includes PBS NewsHour and Washington Week, furthering WETA’s tradition of presenting independent analysis of current news and pressing issues in service to viewers throughout the nation. In Principle will include social media platforms on which the co-hosts will continue the discussion beyond the television broadcasts. Funding for In Principle is provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, PBS, and public television viewers.

enowned actor Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean, Blackadder) stars as Georges Simenon’s legendary, popular French detective Maigret in gripping crime stories set in 1950s Paris. The double feature presents two cases. “Maigret Sets a Trap” follows the hunt for a serial killer stalking the streets in the seedy district of Montmartre. Five are dead and people are in fear; Chief Superintendent Maigret is without a lead and must risk everything to crack the case. The second episode, “Maigret’s Dead Man,” focuses on the murder of a gambler with connections to a brutal gang from Czechoslovakia whose members are robbing and killing wealthy Parisians.
Happy Valley; The Commander
AFTA-winning crime drama Happy Valley stars Sarah Lancashire (right), of Last Tango in Halifax, in a crime thriller that revolves around the life of a hard-working police sergeant, Catherine Cawood. Serving in a West Yorkshire station, her world is turned upside down when a criminal (James Norton, Grantchester) whom she believes is responsible for her daughter’s death is released from prison and becomes embroiled in a new crime. For another policewoman drama, tune in to The Commander (following Happy Valley), a series written by Prime Suspect creator Lynda La Plante and starring Amanda Burton (Silent Witness) as a London homicide unit chief.

n the documentary series Secrets of Great British Castles 2, historian and author Dan Jones (left, at Cardiff Castle in Wales) presents dramatic stories behind iconic fortifications around the United Kingdom. The series’ six episodes each explore one historic site to learn its secrets — the castles of Britain may appear romantic but within their walls are tales of intrigue and violence. Among the stops are Edinburgh Castle, the most besieged castle in Scotland and a fortress whose history inspired a shocking episode of Game of Thrones; Leeds Castle, an idyllic structure owned by six medieval queens and an American-born heiress; Lancaster Castle, one of Britain’s oldest and most notorious strongholds; and Arundel Castle, seat of the powerful Dukes of Norfolk and their ancestors for more than 850 years.

hristie’s is the world’s leading auction house — a top British institution that has evolved into a renowned international brand. But little is known about Christie’s beyond its saleroom walls. Now, for the first time, cameras go behind the scenes of Christie’s global empire and its auction houses across the world, from New York to Shanghai and Dubai to Hong Kong. As the company prepared for its 250th anniversary in 2016, the pressure was on to make it a high-sales year. (At right, Christie’s Global President Jussi Pylkkänen reacts to an auction bid.) Would enough great art works come through Christie’s gilded doors? Who was buying which pieces of art — and what could this tell us about how the art world is changing? The program also airs on WETA UK, Fridays, April 13 and 20 at 8 p.m.

new series narrated by actor Liev Schreiber explores the power of art from earliest civilizations to the present. The PBS/BBC co-production is an exploration of the premise that it is through the creative imagination that humanity expresses its most essential self. Civilizations travels the globe to six continents, visiting such cultural landmarks as the great mosques of Istanbul, the ancient cities of Mesoamerica, the Buddhist caves of Ajanta in India, the Aztecs’ Templo Mayor in modern Mexico City and the funeral site of China’s first emperor — and exploring treasures such as the landscape scrolls of classical China, Olmec sculpture, African bronzes and masks (at right, from Benin), Japanese prints, French Impressionist paintings and much more.

isastrous hurricanes, widespread droughts and wildfires, pervasive heat and extreme rainfall —something’s up with the weather. Scientists agree that this trend is not just a coincidence. It’s the result of the weather machine itself, our climate, changing, becoming hotter, more erratic. In this special two-hour documentary surrounding Earth Day 2018, NOVA investigates the issue of climate change — arguably the defining challenge of our time — and helps to examine the way forward. Why do scientists overwhelmingly agree that our climate is changing, and that human activity is causing it? How will it affect us through the weather we experience? And what will it take to bend the trajectory of planetary warming toward more benign outcomes? Following NOVA, the independent film series POV spotlights science educator Bill Nye.

Classical WETA 90.9 FM NSO Showcase Presents Russian Magic Wednesday, April 4 at 9 p.m. By Nicole Lacroix, Afternoon On-Air Host
R
CHRIS LEE
imsky-Korsakov, one of the members of the Russian Five, or Mighty Handful — composers who embraced Russian nationalism in their music — brought some of Russia’s most romantic fairytales to life in his operas. A master orchestrator, he imbued his fanciful stories with brilliant color. He also taught Igor Stravinsky, whose ballets are equally vivid tributes to Russian storytelling. On Classical WETA’s April NSO Showcase broadcast, featuring music recorded at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts by the National Symphony Soloist Orchestra, we’ll hear two of these Russian fairytales. Our program begins with British Leila Josefowicz conductor Sir Mark Elder leading the NSO in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Suite from his 1907 opera, The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevroniya. The story concerns a prince and a fair maiden who escape to a magical city. Maestro Elder also conducts Stravinsky’s complete ballet The Firebird. This exotic tale of an evil sorcerer and a creature of supernatural beauty was Stravinsky’s breakthrough work in 1910. Moving ahead a century to 2009, we’ll also hear Esa-Pekka Salonen’s Violin Concerto, which he wrote for Canadian violinist Leila Josefowicz at the end of his tenure as conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The four-movement piece, which ends with “Adieu,” reflects his experiences with the LA Philharmonic. Christoph Eschenbach leads the NSO in this performance with Josefowicz, which elicited praise from The Washington Post: “It got a strikingly fine performance from all concerned. Josefowicz played beautifully and movingly with a kind of self-effacement, resisting unnecessary pathos, and Christoph Eschenbach and the orchestra partnered her with intensity but without overpowering her.” Join us for fairytales and new discoveries on NSO Showcase.

Choral Showcase Returns in April Sundays at 9 p.m.
I
By Jim Allison, Program Director, Classical WETA 90.9 FM & VivaLaVoce
’m pleased to share the news that Choral Showcase will return to the Classical WETA schedule this month. Each Sunday evening at 9 p.m. we’ll focus on the great variety of classical works that feature choruses small and large. After kicking off on April 1 with a Bach-centric Easter program, we’ll continue with that composer in mind for the following five weeks as we partner with Washington Bach Consort to broadcast their recent concerts. Over the past year, WBC has presented large baroque programs as in-concert “auditions” of the five candidates for the position of music director, the slot left vacant by the untimely passing in 2016 of WBC founder, J. Reilly Lewis. Thanks to recordist Bob Kraft’s great work at National Presbyterian Church we’ll hear this impressive series of concerts on Choral Showcase: Handel’s Messiah (April 8); Reformation-themed works by Bach (April 15); Christmas Oratorio (April 22); St. John Passion (April 29); and B Minor Mass (May 6). I invite you to visit the Choral Showcase page at classicalweta.org for details, including interviews with each of the five candidates by Classical WETA hosts.

By Deborah Lamberton, Senior Producer n April, “variety” is the keyword for Front Row Washington local concert broadcasts, beginning at Downtown Piano Works in Frederick, Maryland, Monday, April 2 at 9 p.m. Our broadcast features Van Cliburn Gold Medalist Alexander Kobrin continuing his “Beethoven Project” with Beethoven’s Opus 10 piano sonatas Nos. 1-3. The following week, April 9, Mr. Kobrin demonstrates his chamber music acumen in a Phillips Collection recital featuring the Washington, D.C. debut of GrammyAlexander Kobrin nominated violist Maxim Rysanov. Their program includes Franz Schubert’s ever-popular Arpeggione Sonata and two contemporary works inspired by Schubert: Leonid Desyatnikov’s Wie der alte Leiermann, based on the final song in Schubert’s Die Winterreise, and Sergey Akhunov’s Schubert-inspired Der Erlkönig. The recital concludes with Dmitry Shostakovich’s final work, his spare yet pointedly accessible Sonata for Viola and Piano in C Major, Op. 147, replete with quotations from Shostakovich’s own works and Beethoven’s “Moonlight” Sonata. We remain at The Phillips Collection on the Monday, April 16 broadcast for a wonderful performance by The Phillips Camerata, under Israeli conductor Yaniv Dinur. Their program opens with three of six preludes and fugues Mozart arranged while in Vienna, Maxim Rysanov ostensibly at the request of Baron van Swieten, who eschewed contemporary music in favor of contrapuntal works by Bach and Handel. Then it’s the Washington, D.C. premiere of American composer Paul Moravec’s Brandenburg Gate. Moravec writes that the title “suggests a portal through which we enter Bach’s world of exuberant invention.” The work riffs on the B-A-C-H motive, German musical notation for B-flat— A— C— B-natural, used by many composers including Bach himself as a sonic moniker. The program concludes with trumpeter Joe Burgstaller shining forth in Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 in F Major. On Monday, April 23, we feature the Grammy-Award winning Parker Quartet at the National Gallery of Art. They open with Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 1, Op. 12, followed by a work whose world-premiere recording they released in 2016 for Nimbus records — American composer Augusta Read Thomas’ Helix Spirals. The program concludes with the only work Shostakovich composed in 1946, the String Quartet No. 3 in F Major, Op. 72. Although Shostakovich considered it one of his finest works, it was withdrawn from public performance shortly after its premiere, lest Stalinist authorities label it and its composer “formalist.” We close out the month’s Front Row Washington programs Monday, April 30 at 9 p.m. at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, featuring the Washington, D.C. debut of violinist Danbi Um. Ms. Um, who entered the Curtis Institute of Music at age 10, is joined by renowned pianist Orion Weiss for works by Ernest Bloch and Richard Strauss, as well as Erich Korngold’s delightful violin/piano arrangement of his incidental music to Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing.” Their recital was presented by the Shenson Danbi Um Chamber Music concert series, now celebrating its 20th season at NMWA.
