Music and Comedy Abound on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD

ETA’s fundamental mission is to provide access to education for children and adults alike and to promote lifelong learning. To do so, we harness the power of television and new media to bring enriching programming and informative resources to the public. Among WETA’s educational broadcasts and new media offerings are, respectively, WETA KIDS, a television channel devoted exclusively to children’s programming and a safe harbor for young viewers, and WETA’s Learning Media websites (visit weta.org/learningmedia for details), which offer resources and information on literacy, bilingual education, and traumatic brain injuries, and include the world’s leading site on learning disabilities and ADHD. The many ways that WETA pursues and fulfills its educational mission — on the air, online, and in the community — are highly valued by our members and by other important partners as well. One such partner is Newman’s Own Foundation, which in 2011 has extended to WETA an important grant that can help us leverage the power of local funding to efficiently raise even more financial support for our public service efforts. The late actor and philanthropist Paul Newman was a true champion — and devoted viewer — of public television, and particularly of WETA’s own award-winning public affairs production, Washington Week with Gwen Iﬁll and National Journal. This year, Newman’s Own Foundation generously offered membership challenge grants to public broadcasting stations around the nation and WETA is a fortunate — and appreciative — recipient of these matching funds. The grant provides a dollar-for-dollar match up to $200,000 during our fundraising campaigns. Throughout August, WETA members and the general public will encounter messages on WETA TV 26, in mail from WETA, and on our website, weta.org, promoting this simple way to support the station. The bulk of direct fundraising we undertake to pay for WETA’s broadcasts and operations is local, building support from the community we serve. As you consider making pledges of support this month and throughout the rest of this year, please help us take advantage of this excellent opportunity to develop resources for all that WETA does in Greater Washington. WETA Production Wins Three Emmy Awards

ocal Emmy Awards were announced June 25 by the National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and following in the footsteps of WETA’s award-winning 2009 documentary Washington in the ’60s, the acclaimed 2010 WETA TV 26 production Washington in the ’70s has also garnered an array of Emmys. The one-hour documentary charted the District’s rise from the ashes of the 1968 riots to its emergence as a world-class city and featured first-hand accounts from those who shaped the events of the time. The film won Emmys for the following categories: the Historical Documentary category (Jacqueline Todt, executive producer, and Simon Epstein, producer); the Editor/Program (Non-News) category (Doug Johncox, principal editor); and the Audio category (Antonio Pacheco, audio engineer). Among upcoming local documentaries from the WETA TV 26 filmmaking team is More Unusual Attractions — The WETA Guide, a sequel to a 2007 WETA documentary, which explores Greater Washington’s lesser-known places and offers tips on where to find quirky sights and diverting experiences around the area.

uropean travel expert Rick Steves spotlights sunny Spain, journeying throughout the country and sharing his adventures and travel tips in Rick Steves’ Viva España!. Steves experiences Andalucía — from dazzling Moorish palaces to flamboyant flamenco — stopping in Granada, Córdoba and points in between. After a Costa del Sol paella feast, Steves continues through southern Spain, exploring whitewashed hill towns and then descending back to sea level to enjoy the windsurfing mecca Tarifa. He visits Gibraltar for a dose of Britain and sets sail for Africa on a side-trip to Tangier before heading to northern Spain to follow the old pilgrim trail from the French-Spanish border to Santiago de Compostela. Along the way, he runs with Pamplona bulls and savors Galicia’s Celtic culture — in which Riverdance meets flamenco.

The epicenter of the folk, folk rock and singer songwriter movements, the Village, with its cafes and coffee houses, shaped one of the most important periods in American music. Legends of Folk: The Village Scene features rare performances by Bob Dylan; Simon & Garfunkel; Peter, Paul & Mary; Joan Baez; Judy Collins; Richie Havens; The Lovin’ Spoonful; The Mamas and the Papas; Don McLean; Neil Diamond; and The New Lost City Ramblers (left), offering up their most popular songs. The program also presents newly filmed interviews with many of the featured artists.

Barbra Streisand — One Night Only at the Village Vanguard n the early 1960s, clubs such as the Village Vanguard were scattered throughout Greenwich Village in New York City. Now the venue stands alone, the last of its kind. In September 2009, a select group of fans and friends had the rare opportunity to experience a performance by superstar singer Barbra Streisand in this up-closeand-personal setting. Barbra Streisand — One Night Only at the Village Vanguard presents the artist onstage at her most intimate, accompanied by piano, bass, guitar and drums. A tentative song list includes: “Make Someone Happy”; “My Funny Valentine”; “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered”; and “The Way We Were.”

n 2007, after achieving international stardom in the music world, tenor Andrea Bocelli returned to his native Italy for a special concert of his greatest hits along with the debut of (then) new songs. Bocelli grew up in Lajatico, a rural village in Tuscany, where his family farms nearby. On the slopes of this ancient hill town, a special theater was constructed for a one-night-only performance. This month, WETA Television reprises this Great Performances program, taped at the Teatro di Silenzio, nestled in the beautiful, rolling Tuscan countryside. Bocelli performs romantic favorites, joined by special guests trumpeter Chris Botti; “grandissimo sassofonista” Kenny G.; musician, songwriter and producer David Foster; piano virtuoso Lang Lang; and divas Heather Headley and Sarah Brightman.

David Garrett: Rock Symphonies II iolin virtuoso David Garrett has carved out a special artistic path, creating a unique musical experience as he performs works across many genres, ranging from compositions by Mozart to those of rock band Queen, and from Schubert to pop icon Michael Jackson. Enormously popular in his home country of Germany and in the U.K., Garrett is now gaining recognition in the United States. David Garrett: Rock Symphonies II presents the artist in a new concert, taped before a sold-out audience of 18,000 at Berlin’s open-air Wuhlheide Theater. In the program, Garrett weaves classical standards by Brahms, Vivaldi and Dvoˇrák with rock and pop hits from the likes of rock acts John Fogerty, Guns N’ Roses and Nirvana. 2 AUGUST 2011

The series for four-to-seven-year-old children finds Angelina making new friends, facing challenges, and experiencing various forms of music and dance including ballet, modern, tap, jazz, opera, ballroom, and hip hop, as well as ethnic music and dance from around the world. Each episode also includes Camembert’s Shining Stars, a live-action interstitial featuring young performers who demonstrate their love of music and dance. With an arts education curriculum developed by dance instructors and music education specialists, Angelina Ballerina introduces kids to the joys of movement, artistic expression, musicality, imagination and coordination.

hef John Shields, a nationally acclaimed expert in regional American coastal cuisine and a culinary ambassador of the Chesapeake Bay, embarks on a culinary odyssey in Coastal Cooking with John Shields, exploring the cuisine of United States coastal regions. Each episode spotlights a different region — such as the shores of the Gulf States, New England, the MidAtlantic, the Pacific Northwest and the West Coast — and Shields is joined in the kitchen by guest chefs including Nathalie Dupree and Michelle Bernstein, who specialize in each area’s regional culinary and cultural traditions. Guests also include fishermen, innkeepers, local luminaries and cookbook authors. Organized like a meal, each episode features three recipes, plus an easy-to-prepare snack. The recipes naturally feature seafood from the coastal areas, but also meat, poultry, game, fruits and vegetables. Guitar, Flute and Strings on Front Row Washington he John E. Marlow Guitar Series debuts on Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s local concert series Front Row Washington on Monday, August 15 at 9 p.m. with a recital by Trio Bolero recorded last January at Bethesda’s Westmoreland Congregational Church. Guitarists Miroslav Loncar ˘ and Nataša Klasinc, and cellist Rebekah Johnson comprise Trio Bolero, who for this recital present their own transcriptions of works by Vivaldi, Rachmaninoff, Bartók, and Fauré. The John E. Marlow Guitar Series is a project of the International Conservatory of Music, a non-profit organization dedicated to enriching the musical life of residents of metropolitan Washington, D.C. The guitar series began in 1993 in tribute to John Marlow (1939–1992), a composer, performer and educator who was on the faculty of the American University and who inspired and assisted legions of area guitarists. On Monday, August 29 at 9 p.m., Front Row Washington gives a parting nod to summer vacation with The Fessenden Ensemble’s concert — called “American Travels”— at Washington’s National City Christian Church. lassical WETA 90.9 FM’s weekly Sunday night, 9 p.m. broadcast Choral Showcase this month focuses on the “Other” category of choral music items. On the August 14 program, Classical WETA airs Prokofiev’s music for Ivan the Terrible. After the success of Alexander Nevsky (the cantata from which we heard last month on Choral Showcase), filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein and Prokofiev collaborated again. Neeme Järvi conducts the Ivan music scheduled for air. On Sunday, August 21, the broadcast celebrates the great choral conductor Robert Shaw, but this time his pencil rather than baton. Scheduled on Classical WETA is his English adaptation of Brahms’s German Requiem. The following week, on Sunday, August 28, it’s yet a different focus as Choral Showcase spotlights Heinrich Schütz’s setting of “How Lovely are They Tabernacles” (which is the text for the beautifully settled center movement of the Brahms composition), plus Schütz’s German Burial Mass, which, like Brahms’s German Requiem, uses text from various sources instead of the Catholic “Mass for the Dead.”
