ugust and early September herald, respectively, the Republican and Democratic conventions, where the political parties formally nominate their candidates for national office, outline the principles for which they stand, and share their vision for the nation’s future. At this important juncture in the quadrennial presidential election race, public broadcasting and WETA offer a very important service to the American people. Via special PBS NewsHour broadcasts, we present the nation’s most comprehensive, independent primetime television coverage of the conventions — helping educate and inform voters around the country about the candidates, the issues and the choices ahead in Election 2012. WETA co-produces PBS NewsHour, which originates from our Shirlington television studio each night, and as per tradition, we will play a vital role in bringing this year’s convention coverage to the nation. For more top-flight reporting and perspective, this month, WETA’s acclaimed weekly news analysis program Washington Week with Gwen Ifill and National Journal mounts special road show Town Hall events before live audiences in the convention cities, illuminating the issues and exploring campaign developments among the news of the week. See below for details on these special programs. For coverage of the campaigns, tune in to PBS NewsHour’s nightly broadcasts and special convention coverage; to Washington Week with Gwen Ifill and National Journal for weekly insights and special Town Hall events; and to other PBS public affairs programming on WETA Television. uring August and September, WETA’s production Washington Week with Gwen Ifill and National Journal is creating three special road shows — Election 2012 Town Hall Events — before live audiences. The Town Hall Events take place in Tampa/St. Petersburg, Florida, on August 24; in Charlotte, North Carolina, on August 31; and in St. Louis, Missouri, on September 28. The first two occur just prior to the two national political conventions, and the September event takes place just days before the first Presidential Debate. These Town Hall Events offer an opportunity for citizens from across the country to become part of A WETA PRODUCTION the national dialogue with Washington Week moderator and managing editor Gwen Ifill and the program’s roundtable of award-winning journalists. Each of the special events consists of two parts. The first half hour is the classic Friday television broadcast, produced before a live audience. The second program, available for viewing online as the Webcast Extra at pbs.org/washingtonweek, features the live audience in a 30-minute Town Hall, asking questions and sharing viewpoints with Gwen Ifill and her panel of reporters, providing a voters’ perspective on the intersection of local and national issues. Funding for Washington Week with Gwen Ifill and National Journal and the Election 2012 Town Hall Events is provided by Boeing, Prudential Financial, Norfolk Southern, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, PBS and the Annenberg Foundation.

THE WAR, A WETA CO-PRODUCTION BY KEN BURNS & LYNN NOVICK Tues, July 31–Wed, Aug 8 at 9 p.m. on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD WETA TV 26 and WETA HD reprise the 2007 film THE WAR, the acclaimed 15-hour, seven-part documentary created by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick in partnership with WETA. The film explores the American experience of World War II, following the fortunes of a handful of so-called ordinary men and women on the battlefront and the home front. THE WAR relates the story of the conflict around the globe as it honors and celebrates the bravery, endurance and sacrifice of the generation of Americans caught up in the conflagration. The film airs at 9 p.m., July 31– August 2 and August 5–August 8.

1 Wednesday 7:00 PBS NEWSHOUR 8:00 NATURE: WHITE FALCON, WHITE WOLF — A film follows the perilous parenthood of two species — enormous white gyrfalcons and rare Arctic wolves — on Canada’s remote Ellesmere Island, where winter lasts nine months and raising young in such a hostile environment is a daily struggle. {DVI} Repeats Thur 8/2, 1pm 9:00 THE WAR — A seven-part documentary series — a co-production of Florentine Films and WETA that was directed and produced by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick — explores the Second World War from the perspective of ordinary Americans. Episode 2 of 7. When Things Get Tough (January 1943–December 1943). By January 1943, Americans have been at war for more than a year. The Germans still occupy most of Western Europe. In North Africa, American troops are overwhelmed at Kasserine Pass by Erwin Rommel’s seasoned veterans, but after George Patton assumes command, the Americans begin to advance. Across the USA, nearly all manufacturing is converted to the war effort and women enter the work world en masse. As 1943 ends, Allied leaders draw up plans for the long-delayed invasion of Europe. {DVI} Repeats Thur 8/2, 3pm 11:00 CHARLIE ROSE — Repeats next weekday, noon

In November 1943, U.S. Marines assault the Pacific atoll of Tarawa. In Italy, Allied forces stall south of Rome, unable to break through the German lines at Monte Cassino. A risky landing at Anzio ends in failure, but by June 4, Rome is liberated. At home, overcrowding leads to racial violence in Mobile; African Americans, serving in the segregated armed forces, demand equal rights. Japanese-American men are permitted to form a special unit, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. {DVI} Repeats Fri 8/3, 3pm 11:00 CHARLIE ROSE — Repeats next weekday, noon

The Ghost Front (December 1944–March 1945.) By December 1944, Americans have become weary of the cost of the war. In the Pacific, progress has been slow and costly. In Europe, Hitler launches a massive counterattack in the Ardennes Forest in Belgium and Luxembourg — the Battle of the Bulge. The Allies begin massive bombing raids on Germany; but before similar raids can begin on Japan, the airstrip on the island of Iwo Jima must be taken in desperate fighting. et in a small, fictional rural village in the heart of the Irish countryside, the awardwinning drama Ballykissangel explores how life revolves around the local church — with its flock of delightfully mischievous characters — and its next door neighbor and rival, the village pub. The early seasons follow the new, inexperienced priest, Father Peter Clifford (Stephen Tomkinson), who is not only young and open-minded, but also English. Father Clifford must contend with the long-established rural ways of the villagers and their eccentricities and superstitions. The focal point of dramatic tension is the confrontation and chemistry between the priest and the beautiful, stubborn pub owner, Assumpta Fitzgerald (Dervla Kirwan). Full of charm, the series features quirky characters, strange shenanigans and tales of friendship, rivalry and love.

Sundays at 9 p.m.

omposers have been writing about death—its mystery, judgment, and those remaining here who grieve—for as long as there has been music. On Sunday, August 5, Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s weekly broadcast Choral Showcase returns to this oftenconsidered subject, but with fresh ears. Of the many settings of the Requiem, or Mass for the dead, Maurice Duruflé’s is much-loved but rarely recorded in the version with organ instead of orchestra — the version airing on Choral Showcase on August 5. The South Dakota Chorale’s recent fine recording (on Gothic) is the performance to be broadcast on Classical WETA. Also airing on August 5, and on the same subject, is neo-romantic composer Richard Danielpour’s attractive Symphony No. 3, “Journey Without Distance,” which evinces Danielpour’s energy, intensity and serenity. The piece offers a triumphal ascent from the fear of death; the words are by Helen Schucman and William Thetford. The Seattle Symphony and Chorale recording airing on Choral Showcase was first released by Delos, and recently re-issued by Naxos, in the American Classics series.
