ith the July political conventions behind us, the election season has begun in earnest. The next milestone is an important series of presidential and vice-presidential debates coming in September and October. In the months leading up to Election 2016, viewers in Greater Washington and around the nation can rely on WETA productions PBS NewsHour and Washington Week with Gwen Ifill to make sense of the news, presenting their trademark, excellent journalism on the campaigns, issues under debate, and the candidates themselves. In August, as Americans consider the traits they value in their leaders, WETA reprises six acclaimed presidential biographies in the American Experience history series. These illuminating television documentaries spotlight the lives, service and legacies of presidents Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Carter, Reagan and George H.W. Bush. I hope you have a chance to tune in. Among other offerings this month, WETA TV 26 and WETA HD present superb mystery dramas, Olympics-related history films and much more. As part of our traditional August WETA membership campaign, we also feature a wide array of engaging performance programs, lifestyle specials and travel programs. nspired by Daniel James Brown’s critically acclaimed nonfiction book “The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics,” the new documentary film The Boys of ’36: American Experience recounts the story of the American Olympic rowing team that triumphed against all odds in Nazi Germany at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The film explores how nine working-class young men from the University of Washington took the rowing world and the nation by storm when they captured the gold medal at the 1936 Games. The sons of loggers, shipyard workers and farmers overcame tremendous hardships — psychological, physical and economic — to beat not only the Ivy League teams of the East Coast but Adolf Hitler’s elite German rowers. Their unexpected victory, and the obstacles they overcame to achieve it, gave hope to a nation struggling to emerge from the depths of the Depression. Featuring interviews with Brown, historians and surviving children of the 1936 Washington team, the broadcast of The Boys of ’36 coincides with the Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and the 80th anniversary of the crew’s triumph. In the Spotlight Inspector Lewis: The Final Season on Masterpiece Sundays, August 7, 14 & 21 at 9 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD

fter captivating Masterpiece audiences for more than a decade, the series Inspector Lewis ends its run this month with three final episodes. The conclusion of the drama is also the end of an era for Geordie-accented police detective Robert “Robbie” Lewis. English actor Kevin Whately hangs up the popular role that took him from stoic sidekick to lead character through 66 productions in the Inspector Morse and Inspector Lewis series on Masterpiece Mystery!. While Whately has starred in a host of other productions, from the British comedy Auf Wiedersehen, Pet to the drama Peak Practice, the film The English Patient and more, he is most associated with playing the sensible, upright, working-class sleuth who solves crimes Inspector Lewis in the academic haven of Oxford. Portraying Detective Sergeant Lewis in crime novelist Colin Dexter’s Inspector Morse series for the entirety of its run from 1987 to 2000, Whately played the junior partner to prickly intellectual Morse, portrayed by John Thaw. After appearing in 32 episodes of that acclaimed drama — still a public television favorite that airs on the WETA UK channel — the part seemed to end with the conclusion of Morse, the death of Whately’s friend and colleague Thaw, and a fiveyear hiatus from the role. Then, Whately was approached by the Morse producers to participate in a one-off 2005 sequel, Lewis, the popularity of which spawned a whole new series. Emerging from the shadow of Morse, Lewis was promoted to Inspector and partnered with book-smart DS James Hathaway, played by Laurence Fox. The Morse-like combination of working class and intellectual personalities was thus restored, but with room for Lewis to shine in the senior role. The chemistry between Whately and Fox, the intelligent plots, the lovely Oxford setting (almost a character in itself) and Lewis’s romantic tension with a Morse holdover, medical examiner Laura Hobson (Clare Holman), made the drama a success in its own right. This month, savor the final episodes of Inspector Lewis, which also air on WETA UK on Wednesday nights. You can also spot Whately this month on WETA TV 26/HD portraying another police detective — in the 1985 pre-Morse production Miss Marple: A Murder Is Announced (August 11). lmost 40 years ago, swashbuckling hero Captain Ross Poldark galloped across the television screens of millions of public television viewers, winning hearts and vexing villains in one of Masterpiece’s earliest hit dramas, based on a series of novels by Winston Graham. In 2015 a new adaptation of Poldark starred Aidan Turner (above, with Eleanor Tomlinson as Demelza) as the battle-scarred redcoat who returns to England after the American Revolutionary War to find that his father is dead, his lands are ruined and his true love is about to marry his first cousin. Now a new special, Inside Poldark, explores themes of the recent series, following the romances of Ross Poldark, life and times in Cornwall in late 18th-century England, and Poldark as hero. The program uses cast and creator interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, and clips from the program to capture the spirit of Poldark for fans of the 2015 drama — and the original 1975 production. British actor Robin Ellis, the original Poldark, hosts. Season 1 of the 2015 Masterpiece series airs on the WETA UK channel this month, starting Tuesday, August 30 at 10 pm. Season 2 begins September 25.

California Dreamin’: The Songs of The Mamas and The Papas

nother new My Music show presents a 50th anniversary celebration of the harmonious poprock group The Mamas & The Papas and their 1966 debut hit that defined an era, “California Dreamin’, a classic that transcends generations. The affectionate tribute spotlights a wealth of vintage television performances, many previously unseen since their original broadcast, plus rare interviews. With their signature intricate harmonies and mix of male and female voices, The Mamas & The Papas bridged the folk-rock sound of the 1960s with a softer pop sound that endeared the legendary foursome to audiences of all ages. Interviews with “Mama” Michelle Phillips and “Papas” Denny Doherty and John Phillips recall the group’s meteoric rise to the top with fellow member “Mama” Cass Elliot, the beloved icon who would leave The Mamas & The Papas and strike out on a solo career with the 1968 release of the hit song “Dream a Little Dream of Me.” Among the many songs in the special are “California Dreamin’,” “Monday, Monday” and “Dedicated to the One I Love.”

Magic Moments: The Best of ’50s Pop

he My Music series reprises the happiest hits from the days of poodle skirts and penny loafers with encore airings of Magic Moments: The Best of ’50s Pop, a special concert featuring singing sensations of that decade. From “Love Is a Many Splendored Thing” performed by the Four Aces to Patti Page singing her immortal “Old Cape Cod” and “Tennessee Waltz,” the program presents a parade of classic songs. Co-hosted by Pat Boone and Phyllis McGuire with Nick Clooney, the broadcast begins with Perry Como delivering the show’s title track “Magic Moments.” Among new performances, taped on stage in Atlantic City, are balladeer Don Cherry singing the 1955 smash “Band of Gold” and the Four Coins offering their ageless vocalizing on 1957’s “Shangri-La.” Film star Debbie Reynolds sweetly sings “Tammy” from 1957; and Lynn Evans of the Chordettes recalls that trio’s playful “Lollipop.” Other performances include “Love Letters in the Sand” by Boone (above); a greatest hits medley of “Sincerely,” “Sugartime” and “Something’s Gotta Give” by the McGuire Sisters; “Standing on the Corner” by the Four Lads; and much more.

The life of the actor, governor and president who saw America as “a shining city on a hill” is recalled by those who knew him best: wife Nancy Reagan and three of his children. Also interviewed are those in his inner political circle as well as his counterparts on the world stage.

Odd Squad: The Movie

dd Squad, the popular, multiple Emmy-winning show from The Fred Rogers Company and Sinking Ship Entertainment, is a live-action series designed to help kids ages 5-8 learn math. The programs follow young agents who are part of the Odd Squad, an organization whose mission is to problem-solve and use math to save the day whenever something odd happens in town. Premiering Monday, August 1 is Odd Squad: The Movie, guest starring comic actors Jack McBrayer (30 Rock) and Hannah Simone (New Girl). In the special, a rival group of adults called Weird Team arrives with a gadget that fixes any odd problem, and Odd Squad is run out of business. The agents are forced to disband and return to life as regular kids. Using math skills and teamwork, however, they discover that Weird Team isn’t actually solving problems, just covering them up. Agents Otto (Filip Geljo) and Olive (Dalila Bela) and new recruits, agents Olympia (Anna Cathcart) and Otis (Isaac Kragten), must stop Weird Team and save the world. The special repeats Friday, August 5.

n the eight-part contemporary Australian legal drama and political thriller Janet King: The Enemy Within, a senior crown prosecutor (Marta Dusseldorp) returns from maternity leave and is thrust into the spotlight as a prosecutor in a high-profile and controversial case involving a high-ranking police commissioner. Though she proves herself as a capable and gifted “crownie,” King suffers criticism and self-doubt while getting back into the swing of her highpressure work and struggles to balance her roles at home with her incredible workload at the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP). The series, a spin-off from the Australian drama Crownies, grows in complexity from its opening premise. With the success of Janet King: The Enemy Within, a second season was recently produced.

ETA UK presents the BAFTA-winning comedy series Rev, featuring Tom Hollander (Enigma, Pride & Prejudice, Gosford Park) as an all-too-human Anglican vicar, Rev. Adam Smallbone. In the contemporary sitcom, Smallbone has just arrived from a sleepy rural church post to shepherd a complex, inner-city parish — St. Saviour’s — in East London, a world he has no experience of. Each day presents a new moral conflict for Smallbone: everyone wants something from him, all the time. He and his long-suffering wife Alex (Olivia Colman) are buffeted by the parishioners, from urban sophisticates with ulterior motives, to the lonely, the lost, the poor and the insane. While caring for his flock, he contends with depleted coffers, hopeless volunteers, ambitious rivals and more. The program airs in double features Sunday nights, starting August 28.

six-part BBC series features former EastEnders star Tamzin Outhwaite as Sergeant Jo McDonagh, a new recruit to a Germany-based unit of the Army’s Special Investigation Branch (SIB), the elite plain-clothes detective unit of the Royal Military Police that investigates serious crimes connected to members of the British Army. Navigating in a male-dominated institution, McDonagh must prove her detective skills — and watch her back as she probes difficult cases and contends with power struggles within the ranks of investigators. She and the SIB team find themselves involved in the murky underworlds of drug and gun-related crime, murder and human trafficking, espionage and political cover-up, and terrorism. The drama series begins on the WETA UK channel, Friday, July 29, airing at 6 p.m., with the next hour-long episode following at 8 p.m.

Works by Bach on Choral Showcase

f the music I play on the Sunday-night broadcast Choral Showcase on Classical WETA 90.9 FM, there are some strange cases. You might first mention the Mozart Requiem, with its murky details — the commissioner, completions, and “illegal” premiere. But, as much as I hate to burst a scintillating bubble, I have to say that most of the Mozart Requiem fog has cleared. Sorry. Another strange case in the Choral Showcase canon will probably never reveal all its J.S. Bach puzzling secrets, however. Fantastically, the work is widely considered to be one of the greatest in western music. It’s Bach’s B minor Mass! Yes, Bach wrote music far beyond his employers’ expectations (and imaginations), but all within his humble nature — he was content to work at small (and respectable) church jobs. The B minor Mass, though, doesn’t fit that do-thingsfor-a-purpose mold. The piece was not written for an occasion or a place, nor requested by a person. It doesn’t fit the Catholic or Protestant liturgies. Bach had no belief that the Mass would outlive him; musicians of the time did not perform works by their predecessors, and Bach had no reason to dream that would change in the future. It simply seems that Bach, at the end, needed to sum up his life’s work. For himself. And the Mass is just that — a compilation of his work over the course of 40 years, bringing together new composition, earlier Mass sections, and other music that was originally used in other pieces. Further, Bach — always fond of cycles, including chorales and cantatas for the liturgical calendar, and the preludes and fugues in every key of The Well-Tempered Clavier — became obsessed with sets of things in his last decade, yielding The Goldberg Variations, The Musical Offering, and The Art of Fugue. As they were summaries of counterpoint and variation, the Mass was Bach’s final (and, still, the ultimate) word on sacred music. Against all odds — at least in Bach’s time — the B minor Mass survives, and thrives. I have scheduled choral ensemble The Sixteen’s excellent performance on Choral Showcase on August 14; a varied Bach program (of a cantata, motet, and chorale with a very outside-the-box variation by Knut Nystedt) airs on August 28.

Last November, the musical legacy of Jewish Spain was brought to life by the Amernet String Quartet, guitarist Adam Levin and mezzo-soprano Rachel Calloway in works by Joaquín Rodrigo, Carlos Cruz de la Castro, and Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. Our August 22, 9 p.m. program concludes with a world premiere of traditional Ladino songs for voice and string quartet arranged by composer and violist Lev “Ljova” Zhurbin, known for his work with Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble and the Kronos Quartet.

Center Stage from Wolf Trap The series Center Stage from Wolf Trap continues its 26-week run on Saturday evenings at 9 p.m. on Classical WETA 90.9 FM, showcasing live performances recorded from Chamber Music at the Barns. This month’s featured artists are cellist Steven Isserlis and pianist Kirill Gerstein (August 6); the ensemble America’s Dream Chamber Artists (August 13); the CSO Brass Quintet (August 20); and the ensemble Rebel Baroque (August 27). Aficionados of early music immediately recognize the name Jordi Savall, founder of several ensembles including Hespèrion XXI and Les Concerts des Nations. Others know of his awardJordi Savall winning viol performance for the bestselling soundtrack of Alain Corneau’s 1991 film Tous les Matins du Monde. Giving over 140 concerts a year, Mr. Savall is featured in his Phillips Collection debut on Front Row Washington, Monday, August 15 at 9 p.m., in a program titled “The Spirit of the Viol” with works by Bach, Marin Marais, Tobias Hume and others. Since presenting their inaugural concert in 2008, Pro Musica Hebraica founders Charles and Robyn Krauthammer’s goal was to bring “lost and neglected masterpieces of Jewish classical music” to the concert stage.
