Reagan: American Experience, airing in two parts on February 7 and 14, examines the life of one of the most popular presidents of the century — and one of the most controversial. A passionate ideologue, Reagan preached a gospel of lower taxes, less government and anti-communism, casting America as a “shining city on a hill.” Jimmy Carter: American Experience, airing February 21, explores Carter’s life, examines the failings of his political leadership in the context of the turbulent 1970s, and spotlights how his achievements working for peace in the Middle East became the inspiration for his life after the White House, when he recast himself as a giant of moral leadership.

ETA Television presents a spectacular exploration of the landscapes and wildlife of the vast South American continent, which contains the planet’s greatest river system, longest mountain chain, biggest and richest rainforest and driest desert. Wild South America, an award-winning BBC series, spotlights the region that stretches from the Antarctic to the Equator, using cutting-edge camera techniques to spot rarely seen animals and offering new perspectives from an aerial camera soaring over the landscape. Episodes feature extreme habitats and their denizens (Lost Worlds, Feb. 1); examine wildlife of the great river (Mighty Amazon, Feb. 8); spotlight the vast grasslands and their fauna (The Great Plains, Feb. 15); and explore mountain fauna (The Andes, Feb. 22). The series continues next month with a look at the rainforest (Amazon Jungle, March 1).

he series Pioneers of Television II continues on February 1 with explorations of the people behind groundbreaking TV crime dramas such as Dragnet, with Jack Webb; Police Woman, starring Angie Dickinson; Hawaii Five-O, featuring Jack Lord (left); plus I Spy, Mannix, Mission: Impossible, Columbo, The Rockford Files and more. On February 8, the series concludes with a program about local kids’ TV shows, spotlighting early talents such as Willard Scott and William Shatner and Muppets originator Jim Henson — and productions such as Time for Beany, Puppet Hotel, Wallace and Ladmo, and the Baltimore production Romper Room.

he history series Lost Treasures of the Ancient World continues this month with four more intriguing programs examining civilizations of yesteryear. Productions airing in February spotlight remarkable parallels between the Inca and Aztec empires in the Americas (Feb. 2); explore Roman civilization in North Africa (Feb. 9); illuminate religion, culture and dynasties of ancient India (Feb. 16) and probe the mysterious Dark Age era of England’s history (Feb. 23).

TV Highlights Masterpiece Classic: Any Human Heart airs Sundays, February 13, 20 and 27 at 9 p.m. on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD asterpiece presents the epic story of a writer-hero and his colorful life in novelist William Boyd’s television adaptation of his own best-selling 2002 novel, Any Human Heart. Matthew Macfadyen, Oscar-winner Jim Broadbent, Gillian Anderson, Hayley Atwell, Kim Cattrall and Tom Hollander star. The three-part drama is led by Macfadyen (of Pride and Prejudice and Little Dorrit), Broadbent and newcomer Sam Clafin (above, together), who all take on the role of footloose literary everyman Logan Gonzago Mountstuart at different stages of his ordinary and yet extraordinary life, which spans every decade of the 20th century. Boyd’s adaptation of his novel covers a life lived to the fullest — as a writer, lover, prisoner of war and spy — and a myriad of historical events seen through the eyes of one man. From the idealism, vitality and naivety of Mountstuart’s student years at Oxford, Paris in the ’20s, love and heartache, the birth of his first child, scandal in the New York art scene in the ’50s and ’60s, to the horrors of war, London in the ’70s and ’80s, the abject shame of poverty, unlikely heroism and old age in ’90s rural France, Mountstuart’s life and loves intertwine with an array of historical events and figures, including the Duke and Duchess of Windsor (portrayed by Tom Hollander and Gillian Anderson), Ernest Hemingway and Ian Fleming. The women in the protagonist’s life are many and varied; newcomer Emerald Fennell plays the young writer’s wife, Lottie; Hayley Atwell (at left) plays Freya, the love of Logan’s life; Natasha Little plays third wife Alannah; and Kim Cattrall takes on the role of the older Mountstuart’s glamorous lover Gloria. Funding for Masterpiece is provided by public television viewers with additional support from contributors to the Masterpiece Trust.

The programs track the adventures of Peep, a newly hatched chicken; Chirp, a smart and sassy robin; and Quack, an irascible endearing duck; following them in and around a large urban park — a place of great wonder and mystery that the characters call “the big wide world” and are forever eager to explore using everyday science. Each half-hour episode is filled with wonder, charm and humor and contains two animated stories that highlight simple science and math concepts. ough Cut — Woodworking with Tommy Mac follows respected furniture maker Tommy MacDonald as he travels to historic landmarks and other woodshops to gain design inspiration and then returns to his own workshop to demonstrate the steps and techniques needed to create future family heirlooms at home. In each episode, MacDonald shares his skills and best practices, providing detailed project instructions for anyone interested in learning the basics of the craft; he also showcases his more complex projects with advanced tips and techniques. On Valentine’s Day at 9 p.m., we present a delightful recital by two principal Flutist Adria players from the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra — flutist Adria Sternstein Foster and Sternstein Foster harpist Susan Robinson. Their program includes Claude Debussy’s hauntingly lovely Syrinx, as well as his popular La Fille Aux Cheveux de Lin and En Bateau, a serenade by Vincent Persichetti, two works by William Grant Still, and selections from Astor Piazzola’s Histoire du Tango. Novella Chamber Players On Monday, February 21 at 9 p.m., the Novella Chamber Players and guest pianist John Paul Healey celebrate Robert Schumann’s 200th birth anniversary year with a performance of the Piano Quartet in E-flat, Op. 47. Also on the program is “Dumka” by the virtually unknown British-born composer and violist Rebecca Clarke, who achieved a number of firsts as both performer and composer in the early decades of the 20th century. The Friday Music Concert Series is part of Georgetown University’s Music Program, and offers free afternoon concerts in McNeir Hall on GU’s main campus in Washington, D.C.

his year, the romance theme in February (around Valentine’s Day) is too big for just one Choral Showcase program on Classical WETA 90.9 FM. So it gets two shows. On Sunday, February 6, we present Ralph Vaughan Williams’s romance to music, called Serenade to Music. The text is by Shakespeare from The Merchant of Venice and offers the highest praise for music that any words could possibly manage. Then follows a piece by Robert Schumann that is arguably the first romantic oratorio, in part because of the exotic setting and unfamiliar characters. It’s called Paradise and the Peri, about a creature who is kicked out of paradise and its attempts to get readmitted. Although it’s not performed often, Schumann said it was his “most important work in every sense of the word.” Choral Showcase’s Romance II program on February 13 explores the fruits of Hector Berlioz’s fascination with Shakespeare and with the musical expression of emotions. That interest began when the young not-yet-composer went to Paris to (he, and his parents, thought) study medicine. But in Paris, Berlioz first experienced what would become his two greatest inspirations — Shakespeare and Beethoven. From there forward, nothing less than expression through music would satisfy his life’s goals. The dramatic symphony Romeo and Juliet is a major work in that effort. Also on Choral Showcase this month, on February 20, Classical WETA celebrates choral conductor Robert Shaw but focuses on his pencil instead of the baton. Classical WETA airs his English adaptation of Brahms’s German Requiem.
