n an Independent Lens presentation, WETA broadcasts one of the most celebrated theatrical releases of 2018: the powerful, moving documentary film Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, which spotlights the lessons, ethics and remarkable legacy of iconic PBS children’s program host Fred Rogers. The film tells the story of the soft-spoken minister, puppeteer, writer and producer whose show Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood was beamed daily into homes across America for more than 30 years by the nation’s PBS stations, including WETA TV 26. In Rogers’ beloved program, the cardigan-clad host and his cast of puppets and friends spoke to young children about some of life’s weightiest issues in a simple, direct fashion. There hadn’t been anything like Mister Rogers on television before, and there hasn’t been since. Won’t You Be My Neighbor? delves into the heart of this creative genius, who inspired millions of children with compassion, limitless imagination and a land of make-believe. While the nation changed around him, Rogers stood firm in his beliefs about the power of kindness and the importance of protecting childhood. The 2018 production was directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville, whose acclaimed film 20 Feet from Stardom won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2014. Another of Neville’s recent films, Emmy-winning documentary Best of Enemies, exploring the debates between Gore Vidal and William F. Buckley Jr., aired on WETA TV 26/HD on Independent Lens in 2016. Presented by ITVS, Independent Lens is funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a private corporation funded by the American people, with additional funding from PBS, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Wyncote Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

here’s a new policeman in the picturesque but troubled fictional county of Midsomer — Detective Chief Inspector John Barnaby. Neil Dudgeon stars as the Barnaby cousin who takes the investigative reins in the program’s 14th season, coming to WETA TV 26/HD this month for the first time. The new Barnaby joins DS Benjamin Jones to form a new team after the retirement of Tom Barnaby (John Nettles) and, while the chief may be new, the show’s dark humor and whimsy remain. The detectives continue to probe the scandals and deadly deeds that lurk in the seemingly idyllic countryside and lovely small villages. Jason Hughes portrays Jones; and Fiona Dolman stars as Sarah Barnaby, John Barnaby’s wife. The new Barnaby springs into action Saturday nights this month (with the exception of February 9, when preempted). Midsomer Murders is based on Caroline Graham’s books, originally adapted for television by Anthony Horowitz, the creator of Foyle’s War. Dudgeon remains in the starring role in the ongoing series, which was in its 20th season as of 2018. WETA airs the series as seasons become available for broadcast. Midsomer Murders, Series 14 airs on WETA UK as well, Wednesdays at 8 p.m.

he accomplished women codebreakers are back for more crime investigations in a new drama series spun off from the original Bletchley Circle programs and transplanted to the United States. The series follows two of the women on the previous team, feisty Millie Harcourt (Rachael Stirling), conversant in a host of languages, worldly and street smart, and Jean McBrian (Julie Graham), former head of the Bletchley Park codebreaking group, as they travel to the United States to continue to use their extraordinary talents to solve murders. The storyline begins in 1942 with the death of one of their colleagues working with American communications, and fast-forwards 14 years to when the two learn of murders in America with identical characteristics. Heading to San Francisco, the pair locates “Major Sixth” — American codebreaker Iris Bearden (Crystal Balint), with whom Jean had been in contact during the war. Iris introduces them to talented young Hailey Yarner (Chanelle Peloso). The four brilliant women, who keep their former intelligence work secret from family and friends, use their skills and intuition to match wits with criminals in eight episodes airing Monday nights in double features. The Bletchley Circle: San Francisco airs on WETA UK as well, Wednesdays at 10 p.m.

ETA TV 26 series WETA Arts, hosted by WETA Around Town’s Robert Aubry Davis, returns in February, spotlighting visual and performing arts in Greater Washington and celebrating the diverse cultural heritage of the nation’s capital. The half-hour magazine-style production presents a variety of stories, profiles and critic discussions, while introducing emerging and established artists alike. This month, the program presents four locally James Reese Europe focused stories with Black History Month themes. Watch for more and the 369th infantry WETA Arts programs from TV 26 in upcoming months. One February segment, presented by the Kennedy Center’s Artistic Director for Jazz Jason Moran, focuses on James Reese Europe, a groundbreaking, renowned bandleader and World War I officer in the 369th Harlem Hellfighters, an all-black combat unit of the era. A re-creation of Europe’s band performs at the Kennedy Center, where Moran is on a mission to shine a light on this groundbreaking artist who helped popularize jazz around the world and whose importance to music transcends his legacy in the United States. Another segment this month explores how the National Gallery of Art is bringing the world of visionary photojournalist Gordon Parks to local schools to teach what Parks called “the common search for a better life and a better world.” Parks documented the lives of black Americans on film for six decades. In other topics, WETA Arts in February examines how playwright Tom Minter used photographs and video of changing neighborhoods taken by Washington, D.C. high school students to inspire a play by the Washington National Opera; and the program presents a discussion of how photography has been used to counter stereotypes and create positive images of African American life. Rhea Combs, curator of film and photography at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and Melani Douglass, director of public programs at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, show landmark photos (among subjects, at right, abolitionist and political activist Harriet Tubman) from the pre-Civil War era to the civil rights movement. two-hour documentary examines Sammy Davis, Jr.’s long career, exploring his journey for identity through the shifting tides of civil rights and racial progress during 20th-century America. Davis had the kind of career that was indisputably legendary, vast in scope and scale, and yet his life was complex, complicated and contradictory. He strove to achieve the American Dream in a time of racial prejudice and shifting political territory; and he was a veteran of increasingly outdated show business traditions and worked tirelessly to stay relevant. He frequently found himself bracketed by the bigotry of white America and the distaste of black America, and he was the most public black figure to embrace Judaism, binding his identity to that of another persecuted minority. In Duke Ellington’s words, he was “beyond category.” Featuring exclusive interviews with Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg, Norman Lear, Jerry Lewis and Kim Novak, with never-before-seen photographs from Davis’ vast personal collection and rare footage from his performances in television, film and concert, American Masters explores the life and art of a uniquely gifted entertainer whose trajectory paralleled the major flashpoints of American society, from the Depression through the 1980s. Major support for Sammy Davis, Jr.: I’ve Gotta Be Me is provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Additional support for this film is provided by The Leslie and Roslyn Goldstein Foundation, Cheryl and Philip Milstein Family, Seton Melvin, The Philip and Janice Levin Foundation, Judith and Burton Resnick, Ellen and James S. Marcus, and Lillian Goldman Programming Endowment. Major support for American Masters is provided by AARP. Additional support is provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Rosalind P. Walter, Rolf and Elizabeth Rosenthal, The Blanche & Irving Laurie Foundation, Vital Projects Fund, Rhoda Herrick, Jack Rudin, The André and Elizabeth Kertész Foundation, Michael & Helen Schaffer Foundation, and public television viewers.

three-part BBC natural history series narrated by Sir David Attenborough explores the extraordinary wildlife (lemurs!) and dramatic landscapes of the world’s fourth-largest island, one of the few places on Earth where there are still wildlife mysteries waiting to be discovered. Lying just off the east coast of Africa, Madagascar is a fascinating but fragile land of misty mountains, tropical rainforests and spiny desert scrub. There the wildlife has evolved in splendid isolation to become bizarre and unique. Island of Marvels (Feb. 8) explores why the island has such varied flora and fauna. Lost Worlds (Feb. 15) explores the mountainous, wet east side of Madagascar, the most diverse part of the island. Land of Heat and Dust (Feb. 22) spotlights the island’s dry south, rich in wildlife as well.
Margaret: The Rebel Princess
iring after Victoria on two Sunday nights this month, a documentary offers an insider’s look at the tumultuous life and loves of Princess Margaret, the rebellious royal who defied expectations and paved the way for the new generation of Britain’s Royal Family. The film reveals Margaret, the queen’s younger sister, as the first truly modern princess. She introduced a flash of Hollywood glamour into Buckingham Palace and paved the way for Diana, Kate and Meghan. A woman yearning for escape in a post-war world eager to shrug off its own constraints, Margaret became a powerful, unpredictable force, reflecting and driving fundamental changes in attitudes about the monarchy, celebrity, marriage and sex. But it was her relationship with her sister that was perhaps her most important, the woman against whom she defined herself all her life.

mong Wednesday-night presentations on Nature this month, a program spotlights the natural world through the eyes of the Vikings in a journey showcasing the wildlife of the North Atlantic. Ewan McGregor narrates the production, which combines natural-history filmmaking and dramatic recreations: Nature travels from Norway to Newfoundland, just as the seafaring warriors did in 1000 A.D., to get a glimpse of the Vikings’ world in the Americas hundreds of years before Columbus. The film explores the deep history and cultural relationship the Vikings had with the land and sea — from North Sea orcas to Scottish coast puffins and otters to Iceland’s volcanic mounts and Greenland’s frozen tundra. Additional Nature programs this month are Arctic Wolf Pack (Feb. 6); Living Volcanoes (Feb. 20); and Yosemite (Feb. 27).
Support for this Nature program was made possible in part by the Arnhold Family in memory of Clarisse Arnhold; Sue and Edgar Wachenheim III; the Kate W. omedian Sue Perkins (Mekong River; The Ganges) explores the story of India through the life of one of its most beguiling, exuberant cities, Kolkata — formerly known as Calcutta. From a grand history as the seat of British Imperial power to modern reincarnation as a center of commerce, the past, present and future of India co-exist in this cultural capital of the nation. Perkins immerses herself in the complexities of life in the West Bengal metropolis to learn how the city once known for its notorious “black hole” dungeon and impoverished street people has transformed into a diverse, 21st-century megacity with a booming property market and a reputation for tolerance. She meets people from every social strata, from some of the city’s 250,000 homeless children to its wealthy entrepreneurs; navigates with rickshaw wallahs; and explores the city’s infrastructure.

two-part Canadian docu-drama relates the story of North America’s first secretagent training school, including the role it played in defeating the Axis Powers during World War II, and its role in forging the world of modern espionage. These are investigated through the first archaeological dig of the former British facility’s site in Ontario; demonstrations of the school’s training techniques; first-person accounts of those who trained; and dramatic recreations of their exploits behind enemy lines. Dubbed “the school of mayhem and murder,” Camp X and the training centers that it spawned educated more than 25,000 secret agents during the war.

avid Tennant and Janet Montgomery star in an adaptation of Alan Furst’s celebrated spy novel set in Poland, Paris and Berlin in the years leading up to World War II. At the French embassy in Warsaw, the new military attaché, Colonel Jean-Francois Mercier, is drawn into a world of abduction, betrayal and intrigue in the diplomatic salons and back alleys of the city as French and German intelligence operatives engage in a life-and-death struggle on the espionage battlefield. The aristocrat and decorated war hero is also involved in a passionate love affair with a Parisian woman of Polish heritage, Anna Szarbeck (Montgomery), a lawyer for the League of Nations. Risking his life, Mercier works in the shadows amid a remarkable cast of characters, some known to him as spies, some never to be revealed. Anton Lesser (Endeavour) and Tuppence Middleton (New Tricks) co-star.
Museum Secrets, Series 1
six-part series travels to the world’s most famous museums in search of fascinating stories connected to exhibits held in their collections. Why is a Vatican masterpiece covered in heretical graffiti? How does the Louvre protect the Mona Lisa? Why did Napoleon commission a painting full of lies? Each episode focuses on one museum and tells stories about 6-8 pieces held in the collection. The series explores revelations about the world’s most famous art, such as the Sistine Chapel and the Golden Mask of King Tutankhamun, and also delves into spaces the public doesn’t see: a newly discovered necropolis next to the Vatican Museums, the mysterious “tank room” of Britain’s Natural History Museum, and the research labs of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

lassical WETA 90.9 FM’s monthly NSO Showcase broadcast in February celebrates the majesty of nature with Robert Schumann’s “Rhenish” Symphony and Igor Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. Also featured on the program are Berlioz’ Overture to Les francs-juges and Mozart’s Violin Concerto No.3. The National Symphony Orchestra was recorded by WETA at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. In 1850, Schumann started a new job as music director in Dusseldorf. It was an exciting opportunity for the 40-yearold composer, and the 3rd Symphony, nicknamed “The Rhenish,” is a celebration of his new home in the Rhineland. Christoph Eschenbach conducts this NSO performance. The idea for Stravinsky’s ballet The Rite of Spring came to him as “a fleeting vision...I saw in my imagination a solemn pagan rite: sage elders, seated in a circle, watched a young girl dance herself to death. They were sacrificing her to propitiate the god of spring.” Small wonder that the composition’s 1913 Paris premiere created such a riot. Leonard Slatkin conducts. Berlioz’ first opera, Les francs-juges, was never performed, but he recycled some of the music into the Symphonie fantastique, and the overture became a favorite on the concert stage, especially popular with trombonists. The dark story concerned deadly secret trials in the Middle Ages; the composer called the opera “a hymn of despair.” Ludovic Morlot conducts. Mozart was the second concertmaster in the Archbishop of Salzburg’s band, under Michael Haydn (Joseph’s little brother). He composed five violin concertos for his own use. The third — which we present — dates from 1775, when Mozart was 19. Concertmaster Nurit Bar-Josef (right) is featured in this performance conducted by Christoph Eschenbach. Join me on February 6 for a varied program ranging from the shock of Stravinsky’s Rite of NSO Concertmaster Spring to the lyricism of Mozart. NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA/STEVE WILSON

horal Showcase in February presents two large works for chorus and orchestra, along with several works for smaller forces. On February 3, Osmo Vänskä conducts the Minnesota Orchestra in Kullervo, a choral symphony by Jean Sibelius. Drawn from Finland’s national epic poem, The Kalevala, the saga of Kullervo offers a twist on the story of Oedipus: After a rival tribe massacres his “Kullervo Marches to War” family and enslaves him, Kullervo grows up to become a warrior. He seduces a young girl; when it turns out she is his long-lost sister, she drowns herself, and in his grief, he slays the rival tribe before killing himself. On February 10, Washington’s 21st Century Consort performs Sacred Songs and Meditations, a work composed for them by James Primosch. Also on the program, the medieval ensemble Sequentia performs Symphoniae, or Spiritual Songs, composed by the Sibyl of the Rhine: abbess, composer, mystic, and Doctor of the Church, St Hildegard von Bingen. On February 17, we have music for four voices: three mass settings, starting with William Byrd’s Mass for Four Voices sung by the Oxford Camerata led by Jeremy Summerly. The Missa in honorem Sancti Dominici (St Dominic Mass), written by 20th-century English composer Edmund Rubbra upon his conversion to Catholicism (on the feast of St Dominic), recalls the ancient Tudor style of Byrd and is performed by the Westminster Cathedral Choir directed by James O’Donnell. Wrapping up the program is Paul Hillier directing the Theatre of Voices in Arvo Pärt’s sublime Berlin Mass. On February 24, we present Die Schöpfung — The Creation by Franz Joseph Haydn, a work from his later years that brings all of his powers and all musical forces to bear to depict the story of Creation from the Book of Genesis. Join me for choral masterworks on Choral Showcase this month, Sundays at 9 p.m.

e start this month of Front Row Washington with a celebration! It’s Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year, on February 5, marking Music From China Ensemble the start of the year of the Pig (their chubby faces and big ears a sign of wealth!). On February 4 we celebrate with Music From China Ensemble’s exceptional concert at the Freer|Sackler. Their performance was devoted to new music for Chinese and Western instruments, and included a world premiere by Grammy-nominated composer Zhou Tian. We’ll enjoy arrangements of traditional folk songs for Chinese and Western instruments, and 20th-century works such as Drinking Alone with the Moon by Wang Guowei and River Songs by Yang Yong. Drinking Alone with the Moon is inspired by the poem of the same name by Tang dynasty poet, Li Bai. Composed in 2014 for erhu, cello and violin, each instrument plays a specific role. The erhu is the poet, the cello is his shadow, and the violin is the personification of the moon. River Songs, composed in 2001, was inspired by Hequ, a county in the Shanxi province that lies at the tip of the Yellow River delta. The people from this area are known for their singing, and River Songs gives insight into their lives over three avant-garde movements. Composed in 2018, Zhou Tian’s Hundred Antiques was inspired by traditional Chinese decorative arts and was co-commissioned by the Freer|Sackler and the Music From China Ensemble. Zhou Tian is able to reflect this deep tradition in a contemporary work for Chinese instruments (erhu and pipa), Western instruments (violin and cello) Cellist Edgar Moreau and Chinese Bells. Also this month, we have the 2018 New York International Piano Competition winner, Youlan Ji, in her Phillips Collection performance on February 11. We listen to Edgar Moreau, cello, and Jessica Xylina Osborne, piano, from Candlelight Concert Society on February 18. To finish the month we enjoy a Phillips Collection concert of pianist Sergei Babayan on February 25. Join me every Monday evening at 9 p.m. for Front Row Washington on Classical WETA.
