A

airs Tuesdays in January at 9 p.m. on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD

four-part BBC series, The Space Age: NASA’s Story presents a complete history of mankind’s journey into space, spotlighting the heroes, triumphs and tragedies of space exploration. The programs feature stunningly restored film footage and insightful interviews with the astronauts, journalists and family members who were part of the saga. Footage reveals space walks, moonwalks, exaltation and despair through the eyes and feelings of these participants. Starting with NASA’s beginnings during the Cold War, the series follows events from the race to get the first man in space to the first steps on the Moon. With triumph and achievement came risk — and disaster — as The Space Age: NASA’s Story also follows the white-knuckle suspense of Apollo 13 and tragedy in the space shuttle program.

Narrated by Kelsey Grammer, programs premiering in January are Science Fiction (January 18), spotlighting morality plays by storytellers Gene Roddenberry (Star Trek, featuring Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner, at left) and Rod Serling (The Twilight Zone), plus Irwin Allen’s popular series Lost in Space; and Westerns (January 25), exploring such programs as Daniel Boone, Davy Crockett, Maverick, The Big Valley, Bonanza and Gunsmoke. W

airs Saturdays, January 8, 15, 22 & 29 at 8 p.m. on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD

ETA Television presents double features of British comic drama Doc Martin throughout January, completing Series III and beginning Series IV. In this month’s programs, the eccentricities of the colorful characters of the Cornish village of Portwenn continue to drive Doctor Martin Ellingham to distraction, while the romance between the blunt, socially inept doctor and local school headmistress Louisa takes a pointed turn — with interfering neighbors, a romantic rival and decisions about the future to come.

he acclaimed series Prime Suspect joins the Thursday mysteries lineup on WETA TV 26 and WETA HD, starting with the 1991 Series I, featuring Helen Mirren in her debut as detective Jane Tennison, who strives to prove that she has what it takes to succeed in the male-dominated workplace of London police investigators. The gritty drama, written by dramatist and novelist Lynda LaPlante, launched a 15-year franchise, catapulted Mirren into a signature role, and along with its sequels won a host of television awards — including British Academy of Film and Television Arts honors for Best Drama Serial and Best TV Actress. Prime Suspect airs each Thursday night following presentations of Sherlock Holmes, starring Jeremy Brett in his signature role as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Baker Street sleuth (this month coming to an epic confrontation with his archrival) and double features of Agatha Christie’s Poirot, featuring David Suchet (left) as the great Belgian sleuth, who this month falls in love (!), investigates murders, tracks purloined gems, probes an Egyptian tomb’s curse, and picks up a cold case.

Masterpiece Classic: Downton Abbey

! New Series

COURTESY MASTERPIECE

C

premieres Sundays, January 9–30 at 9 p.m. on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD

reated by Oscar-winning writer Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park), the four-part Masterpiece Classic Edwardian drama Downton Abbey — reminiscent of Upstairs, Downstairs — depicts the lives of the noble Crawley family and the staff who serve them, set at their country house in 1912. The mini-series, kicking off the 40th season of Masterpiece, features an all-star cast, including Hugh Bonneville (Notting Hill), Dame Maggie Smith (Harry Potter) and Elizabeth McGovern (A Room with a View), Dan Stevens (Sense & Sensibility) and a host of other great actors. In the story, the Titanic has just gone down and taken with it the two male heirs of Downton Abbey, whose current lord has only daughters, albeit marriageable ones. The nearest male relative, a bachelor lawyer, soon learns the ropes of managing the sprawling estate, with its army of servants, and its hunts, garden parties, and sexual intrigues.

Nature Spotlights Birds of Paradise and More

Sundays at 8 p.m. on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD

Courtesy Nature

ature presents Birds of the Gods (Jan. 23), which features BBC filmmaker Sir David Attenborough introducing a young team of New Guinean scientists on a grueling expedition to the depths of the rainforest to find and film Birds of Paradise — the holy grail of wildlife filmmakers. The birds sport plumage of unimaginable color and beauty — when Europeans first saw these fabulous creatures in the 16th century, they believed they must be from heaven and called them birds of paradise. But finding these birds, and witnessing their mating displays, is an extraordinarily difficult task. Tune in on other Sundays at 8 p.m. as Nature spotlights lions in Elsa’s Legacy: The Born Free Story (Jan. 9); arctic fauna in White Falcon, White Wolf (Jan. 16) and animal newborns in Born Wild: The First Days of Life (Jan. 30).

On January 16, Choral Showcase features Mozart’s Sancta Maria, including those less often heard. a loving farewell to Salzburg as the composer departed for Paris in 1777, and the composer’s “Great” Mass, K. 427, written with the intention of improving the strained relations between Mozart’s wife Constanze and his father Leopold — specifically to celebrate his father’s eventual acceptance of Constanze into the family. Constanze was the soprano soloist at the work’s premiere. Tune in to Choral Showcase each Sunday night, and visit classicalweta.org to learn more about the broadcasts.
