ne of the most acclaimed films of the year, a boxoffice hit and a nominee for the Academy Award for Best Documentary, Raoul Peck’s I Am Not Your Negro premieres January 15 on the film series Independent Lens. The 90-minute program envisions the book that author James Baldwin (above, right) never finished, a revolutionary and personal account of the lives and successive assassinations of three of his close friends: Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. In 1979, Baldwin wrote a letter to his literary agent describing the project, his next, to be called “Remember This House.” But at the time of Baldwin’s death in 1987, he left behind only 30 completed pages of his manuscript. In I Am Not Your Negro, filmmaker Raoul Peck envisions Baldwin’s completed project. The result is an up-to-the-minute examination of race in America, using Baldwin’s original words, spoken by Samuel L. Jackson, and a wide array of rich archival material. The film was created in collaboration with the James Baldwin Estate. Tune in as well to Lorraine Hansberry: Sighted Eyes/Feeling Heart: American Masters, airing Friday, January 19 at 9 p.m., to learn about the life and work of the author and activist who created the drama “A Raisin in the Sun” (1959), which changed the face of American theater, depicting the life of a black family on Chicago’s South Side. Presented by ITVS, Independent Lens is funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a private corporation funded by the American people, with additional funding from PBS, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Wyncote Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

enna Coleman returns to her role as England’s young queen in a new season of the lavish Masterpiece drama Victoria, which airs in seven episodes created and scripted by bestselling novelist Daisy Goodwin. Joining the cast in the new season is Dame Diana Rigg, who plays the Duchess of Buccleuch, the court’s new Mistress of the Robes — a font of old-fashioned good advice for the queen. Tom Hughes stars as the queen’s consort, Prince Albert. Season 2 finds Victoria adapting to motherhood after the birth of her first child, a daughter. Meanwhile, the disaster of the Anglo-Afghan War unfolds abroad, and the catastrophic Irish potato famine begins to wreak havoc. In other foreign affairs, a royal state visit to France is in the offing. Most intriguing to Prince Albert is the Industrial Revolution sweeping England. Among the new advances is a mechanical calculator, a project that involves the bewitching Ada Lovelace, daughter of the scandalous Lord Byron. Victoria episodes repeat Mondays at 3 p.m. and are also available for streaming via WETA Passport (see the back cover to learn how.) Funding for Masterpiece is provided by Viking Cruises and Farmers Insurance® with additional support from public television viewers and contributors to The Masterpiece Trust.

Janet King, Series 3

Sundays at 8 p.m. starting January 7 on WETA TV 26/HD

arta Dusseldorp (A Place to Call Home, Jack Irish) reprises her role as prosecutor Janet King in the third season of the award-winning Australian legal drama and crime series. In eight new episodes, King confronts a hornet’s nest of dirty dealings throughout a range of different sports, with deep links to gambling and organized crime. What begins as a sport-betting investigation soon unmasks elite professional athletes and their connection to the shadowy world of performance-enhancing drugs, match fixing, kickbacks and, ultimately, murder. In Series 3, King has a new job after her success as a royal commissioner: the Governor-General has asked her to be an examiner for Australia’s National Crime Commission. The death of a young tennis player is referred to the Commission, and King must probe the case.

ETA presents classic mysteries on Thursday nights, first featuring six episodes of The Inspector Lynley Mysteries, starring Nathaniel Parker as blue-blooded Scotland Yard sleuth Thomas Lynley and Sharon Small as his working-class colleague, Barbara Havers. In the four episodes of Series 5 and two episodes of Series 6 (the popular drama’s final installments), the pair face new challenges, including a personal tragedy, Lynley himself becoming a murder suspect, and then a final test of their friendship. On January 25, WETA presents two episodes of The Best of Agatha Christie: Miss Marple, starring Julia McKenzie as the spinster sleuth. In A Caribbean Mystery, Marple investigates a series of murders at a lavish hotel on a tropical isle; and in Greenshaw’s Folly, Marple probes murders at the home of an eccentric botanist friend.

BBC

he dazzling documentary Life, from the BBC Natural History Unit, spotlights the glorious variety of life on Earth and the spectacular and extraordinary tactics animals and plants have developed to stay alive. Sir David Attenborough narrates the 10-part 2009 film — more than four years in the making, filmed over 3,000 days across every continent and in every habitat — as it captures evolution in action: individual creatures under extreme pressure to overcome challenges from adversaries and their environment, pushing the boundaries of behavior. The BBC cinematic techniques capture unprecedented, beautiful sequences, such as birds running and dancing on the water’s surface in dazzlingly intricate displays of courtship and fidelity, fish outwitting predators by using their fins to take flight, flies competing in an eyeball inflation contest, and much more. Episodes are The Challenges of Life, Reptiles and Amphibians, Mammals, Fish, Birds, Insects, Hunter and Hunted, Creatures of the Deep, Plants and Primates. Also this month, the three-part BBC film Yellowstone — Wednesday, January 17 (Episodes 1 & 2) and 24 (Episode 3) — explores the national park, one of the world’s last and most spectacular wildernesses, a global icon of natural beauty. In the setting of the park’s breathtaking landscapes, the lives and fortunes of Yellowstone’s animals are inexorably bound together. The 2009 film, from the executive producer of the series Life, spotlights the park’s grandeur as it follows animals’ struggle to survive over the course of three changing seasons in episodes titled Winter, Summer and Autumn. The weekly Wednesday series Nature spotlights animals and landscapes in January as well, presenting the programs Snow Monkeys (January 3); Yosemite (January 10); Arctic Wolf Pack (January 17), Animal Misfits (January 24) and the first installment of the three-part miniseries Animals with Cameras (January 31), which takes a fascinating look at the secret lives of animals, filmed where no human cinematographers can go.

new series reported and produced by award-winning journalist Ann Curry, a former NBC News anchor and international correspondent, explores some of history’s most dramatic events through the personal stories of those who experienced them, bringing together people whose lives intersected at pivotal moments. Each of the series’ six episodes researches clues from the past to spotlight the connections forged among people who now, against the odds, have the chance to reunite with someone who transformed their life. The tides of history can throw strangers together or tear loved ones apart. We’ll Meet Again reveals moving personal experiences of hope, courage, love, and the forging of unbreakable bonds: from a Vietnam War baby desperate to find the American father she last saw 40 years ago to the military chaplain who helped a stranger through the trauma of 9/11, from a Japanese-American girl interned in 1942 who never forgot the classmate who helped her during her darkest hours to Civil Rights workers whose lives were forever changed by the deep relationships they formed in the 1960s South. Episode 1, Children of WWII airs January 23 and Episode 2, Rescued from Mt. St. Helens airs January 30. The next four episodes, Lost Children of Vietnam, Heroes of 9/11, Freedom Summer and Coming Out, air in February.

ne of America’s most beloved singers takes the stage as WETA presents to a nationwide audience a new performance special honoring musical icon Tony Bennett’s receipt of the 2017 Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. The 90-minute concert program, taped November 15 at the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Constitution Hall in Washington, features musical tributes to Bennett as a star-studded array of artists sing songs of the Tony Bennett with Great American Songbook that Bennett popularized over the course Librarian of Congress of his extraordinary career in music. He is the first interpretive singer Carla Hayden to be the recipient of the distinguished Gershwin Prize. The program Tony Bennett: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song spotlights Bennett’s greatest songs, featuring performances by Bennett himself, as well as Chris Botti, Michael Bublé, Savion Glover, Josh Groban, Gloria Estefan, Wé McDonald, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Lukas Nelson, Stevie Wonder and Vanessa Williams, with special appearances by Michael Feinstein, Lady Gaga and Wynton Marsalis — and with Bruce Willis as host and Gregg Field as music director. On the bill are classic songs including “Cold, Cold Heart,” “The Very Thought of You,” “The Best Is Yet to Come,” “They Can’t Take That Away From Me,” “Just in Time,” “The Good Life,” “Smile,” “Our Love Is Here to Stay” and Bennett’s signature tune, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.” During the event, Bennett is presented the Gershwin Prize by Dr. Carla Hayden, Librarian of Congress, and a delegation of Members of Congress. The Prize is given annually to a composer or performer whose lifetime contributions exemplify the standard of excellence associated with songwriters George and Ira Gershwin. Recipients have included Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Sir Paul McCartney, Burt Bacharach and Hal David, Carole King, Billy Joel, Willie Nelson and Smokey Robinson. WETA has produced the television production for PBS since the award’s inception in 2007. This year’s program is a co-production of WETA, Bounce AEG and The Library of Congress. Bennett, who celebrated his 91st birthday last August, has had new albums charting in seven consecutive decades, from the early 1950s to recent years with his acclaimed Duets albums (2006, 2011) and his 2014 collaboration, Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga: Cheek to Cheek, which debuted at No. 1 when he was 88. The native of Queens, New York has had 24 songs in the Top 40, and he has earned 19 GRAMMY Awards, including a 2001 Lifetime Achievement Award and a 1995 GRAMMY for Album of the Year for MTV Unplugged, which introduced him to a whole new generation. Bennett is also an extraordinarily accomplished painter; he is a World War II veteran who fought in the Battle of the Bulge and helped liberate a concentration camp; and he marched with Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma to support the Civil Rights movement. The artist has performed for 11 U.S. presidents; the United Nations has named him a Citizen of the World as one of its foremost ambassadors; and among his many accolades, Bennett has been a Kennedy Center honoree and NEA Jazz Master. his atmospheric 2016 Scottish series, based on a true story, follows a determined detective who is taunted by an arrogant serial killer as he fights to bring him to justice. In the mid-1950s, Peter Manuel embarked on a two-year killing spree, bringing fear and terror to a small community in Scotland. His trial in 1958 was a media sensation; never before had one man been tried simultaneously for eight murders. The gripping three-part dramatization of the case stars Martin Compston (right, Line of Duty, Monarch of the Glen) as Manuel, and Douglas Henshall (left, Shetland, Primeval, Collision) as detective William Muncie, relating the story of the policeman’s dogged battle to prove Manuel’s guilt — and the killer’s vendetta against the man on his trail.

The series is set against the backdrop of Europe in crisis. When a prominent French politician is found dead in the middle of the Channel Tunnel, straddling the border between the UK and France, the two police officers — with strikingly different personalities — are sent to investigate on behalf of their respective countries and are forced into an uneasy partnership to find a calculating killer who is on a deadly moral crusade.

In episodes airing this month, Christie’s Belgian super-sleuth tackles five cases: Three Act Tragedy (Jan. 3) unfolds with Poirot stumped, for a time, by a choking death. The star-studded cast includes Toby Jones, Hugh Bonneville, Dame Eileen Atkins, Barbara Hershey, David Morrissey and Jessica Chastain. The Clocks (Jan. 24) features a conundrum involving clocks frozen in time in the room where a body is found. Wrapping up the month is Mrs. McGinty’s Dead (Jan. 31), in which Poirot must race to prove a convicted killer innocent, with help from Ariadne Oliver.

Filmed on location in southern Sweden, and set in the bucolic seaside town of Ystad, the drama Wallander follows the middle-aged sleuth as he battles personal demons while solving crimes. The detective is burdened by a recent break-up with his wife, blood sugar gone haywire, a daughter trying to run his life, and an artist father succumbing to Alzheimer’s disease. But the manifold challenges in Wallander’s personal life focus his concentration on the complex, gritty cases unfolding around him. old from the perspective of the decisionmakers and the soldiers on the ground, a three-part docudrama follows the dramatic events of the World War II battle and ensuing evacuation at Dunkirk, France from May 25 to June 4, 1940. British and French troops were forced back into an ever-decreasing pocket of land by the relentless onslaught of the German army and air force, and the British Navy launched a momentous effort to save as many soldiers as possible on short notice and with slender resources. The three episodes, respectively, spotlight the retreat, as a rearguard action is put in place to hold back the Germans and mobilize the naval rescue; the evacuation itself; and the final desperate efforts of soldiers to escape and stories of those left behind. Simon Russell Beale (Into the Woods) stars as Winston Churchill, and Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) portrays Lt. Jimmy Langley. Timothy Dalton narrates. any solo artists have achieved “firsts” in their career, but perhaps none more than American guitarist Sharon Isbin. In addition to winning multiple Grammy Awards, Ms. Isbin created the Juilliard School’s guitar department, won the Madrid, Toronto and Munich Competitions as well as Guitar Player’s “Best Classical Guitarist” award, has commissioned and premiered more concerti than any other guitarist, and is the first and only guitar soloist to record with the New York Philharmonic. No surprise then, that Sharon Isbin was a featured artist for The Phillips Collection Music’s 75th anniversary season in 2015. Hear her superb recital on Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s Front Row Washington broadcast Stefan Jackiw Monday, January 8 at 9 p.m. with Ms. Isbin performing works by Enrique Granados, Francisco Tárrega, Isaac Albéniz and Leo Brouwer. Next, two sonatas by Brahms and three romances by his muse and dear friend, Clara Schumann, anchor a Candlelight Concert Society recital by violinist Stefan Jackiw and pianist Anna Polonsky. Broadcast Monday, January 15, the program also features a short new work by American composer David Fulmer commissioned for Jackiw and Polonsky by Carnegie Hall. Titled They Turn Their Channeled Faces to the Sky, the piece was inspired by English poet Janes Fenton’s “Rain,” depicting sailors far from land capturing “the sweet rain” in a torn sail. That is followed by Brahms’ lovely “Regenlied,” or “rain song,” Sonata No. 1 in G major, Op. 78. On Monday, January 22 don’t miss a Dumbarton Concerts recital by the brilliant Calidore String Quartet featuring Beethoven’s last complete work, the Quartet in F Major, Op. 135. That’s followed by Hungarian composer Györgi Ligeti’s first string quartet, Calidore String Quartet “Metamorphoses Nocturnes,” a single-movement work which Ligeti describes as belonging “firmly to the Bartók tradition” with “some touches of Stravinsky and Alban Berg.” The Calidores conclude with Dvorák’s beloved “American” string quartet. We end the month on Monday, January 29 back at the Phillips Collection with a program of slightly altered “three B’s”: Beethoven, Brahms and Bartók, featuring the Gould Piano Trio with clarinetist Robert Plane. Together for 25 years, the British-based Gould Piano Trio was described by The Washington Post as “the combination of jeweler-like precision and a musical fire that ignites from the first bar.” Their recital includes Beethoven’s clarinet trio in B-flat, opus 11, Bartók’s “Contrasts” for Clarinet, Violin and Piano composed for Benny Goodman and violinist Joseph Szigeti, and Brahms’ second piano trio, about which he wrote to his publisher: “You have not yet had such a beautiful trio from me and very likely have not published its equal in the last ten years!” In all, January features a month of great music-making recorded live in performance on Front Row Washington, broadcast Monday nights at 9 p.m. on Classical WETA.

he “Oxford Dictionary” defines the concerto as a “musical composition for a solo instrument or instruments accompanied by an orchestra, especially one conceived on a relatively large scale.” The first NSO Showcase broadcast of the new year on Classical WETA 90.9 FM presents three concertos, three remarkable soloists, and three conductors in concerts recorded at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts by Classical WETA. Here’s how the NSO website describes the first two concertos: Pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, who plays with “classical refinement and cool beauty” (The New York Times), starts off the festivities with Franz Liszt’s Second Piano Concerto, a work of rhapsodic sweep cast in a single movement. A stunning illustration of sustained virtuosity, this beloved Romantic masterpiece shines with blazing marches, climactic glissandos, and piano arabesques. NSO Music Director Emeritus Christoph Eschenbach conducts. The program continues with the NSO debut of Dutch violinist Simone Lamsma, who brings her “piercingly beautiful” tone (Chicago Tribune) to Shostakovich’s First Violin Concerto, under the baton of British conductor Mark Wigglesworth. Secretly composed under Soviet oppression, the work was triumphantly revealed many years later to overwhelming acclaim, captivating audiences with its energy, power, and signature Shostakovich elements of daunting solos and unique symphonic structure. Finally, Slovakian conductor Juraj Valcuha teams up with the NSO and Emanuel Ax for Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.1 in a performance The Washington Post called “smooth as satin, unassuming and clear, building to a focus in the cadenza so intense and otherworldly that the orchestra, coming in with its final chords, seemed suddenly jejune.” With this concerto, Beethoven made a splash in Vienna, showing off the brilliance of his playing in what was probably the grandest and longest piano concerto the audience had ever heard...as Michael Steinberg writes in his book, “The Concerto,” “he gave them a humdinger, something to make them sit up and take notice.” Three concertos, three soloists and three conductors add up to an exciting start to the new year on Classical WETA’s NSO Showcase.
