enna Coleman returns in a new season of Victoria on Masterpiece, starring as Britain’s famed queen who ruled over the largest empire the world has ever known. As the new episodes open, it is 1848 and revolution is breaking out across Europe. Britain’s fearless young monarch stands between order and chaos as she faces a crisis that threatens her reign. While pregnant with her sixth child, Victoria must contend with political upheaval on the Continent as the downtrodden begin agitating for the overthrow of aristocratic rule. In England, this impassioned discontent leads to Chartism, a set of demands for universal male suffrage, the secret ballot, equal representation for voters and other reforms considered radical at the time. Passion is also an issue at Buckingham Palace, where Victoria is reluctant to risk more pregnancies and she and Albert (Tom Hughes) find themselves at odds about their offspring (especially troubled Bertie), the role of the monarchy and, increasingly, with each other. Series 3 introduces new historical characters, including the vainglorious Lord Palmerston (Laurence Fox, Inspector Lewis), who crosses swords with the queen over British foreign policy. Also vexing the queen this season is Victoria’s half-sister, Princess Feodora (Kate Fleetwood), who seeks refuge with the queen due to political unrest back home in Germany. Following Victoria’s first two episodes on January 13 and 20, stay tuned for Victoria & Albert: The Wedding, which recreates the couple’s famed nuptials that changed British matrimonial ceremonies forever. Victoria, Series 3 on Masterpiece also airs on WETA UK, Saturdays at 8 p.m. starting January 26.

Funding for Masterpiece is provided by Viking and Farmers Insurance® with additional support from public television viewers and contributors to The Masterpiece Trust.

t’s been a long wait, but the British comedy-drama Doc Martin has finally returned with its eighth season as the socially challenged doctor, Martin Ellingham (Martin Clunes), and his wife Louisa (Caroline Catz) are back together again, living in Portwenn with their infant son, James Henry. Family life, however, is proving to be stressful, and their problems are far from over. With Louisa’s encouragement, James Henry has grown attached to Buddy the dog, but Martin is disgusted by the four-legged friend. In need of a new nanny, Louisa finds herself juggling too many responsibilities and considers switching careers, causing a rift with Martin. Meanwhile, Portwenn is abuzz as the residents prepare for a wedding. The Larges hope to profit from the festivities, but when Martin’s Aunt Ruth (Emmy winner Eileen Atkins) considers selling the family farm, her decision causes trouble for their business endeavors. As some relationships bloom and others falter, can Martin cope with all the changes — or will he risk the fragile accord he’s forged with his family? Sigourney Weaver, Caroline Quentin and Art Malik are guest stars this season, the drama’s penultimate. Doc Martin, Series 8 airs on WETA UK as well, Tuesdays at 9 p.m. starting January 8 and on following Thursdays at 10:30 p.m.

n a quirky, comic 2018 crime drama from the production team that created Father Brown, The Coroner and Land Girls, Mark Benton stars as private detective Frank Hathaway, who works alone but isn’t faring so well. He might have a brilliant instinct when it comes to solving crime, but he’s also out of shape and low on cash. Frank needs a partner. He doesn’t know it yet, but he needs ex-hairdresser and peopleperson Lu Shakespeare, portrayed by Jo Joyner. After fate brings them together, Frank and Lu eventually join forces and form an unlikely and entertaining detecting duo. They keep busy, for all is not as peaceful as it seems in their pretty theatre town and home of the Bard, Stratford-upon-Avon. Vengeful lovers stalk the streets, the mayor is murdered and a magician’s trick fatally misfires. The two partners must learn to trust each other, aided by their actor-receptionist, who spends too much of his time learning his lines. Shakespeare & Hathaway airs on WETA UK as well, Saturdays at 9 p.m. starting January 5 and on following Sundays at 10 p.m.

NEW SEASON of the WETA co-production airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. starting January 8 on WETA TV 26/HD

opular ancestry series Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. — produced in partnership with WETA — presents fascinating new stories and extraordinary revelations as it returns in January with a new season spotlighting the heritage of 25 of America’s best-known celebrities. Each program features detailed explorations of guests’ family histories, developed from genealogy research and DNA science. As in previous seasons, surprises are in store as lost ancestors are found, mysteries of identity are solved, and family myths are exploded. Series host, writer and executive producer Henry Louis Gates, Jr., the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor at Harvard University and director of the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research, again guides the discoveries, gleaned from old-school genealogical detective work along with cutting-edge DNA analysis that has advanced rapidly in recent years. In the 10 new episodes of Season 5, participants learn intriguing truths about their forebears. New program guests this season are Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei; Emmy and Golden Globe award winners Felicity Huffman, Laura Linney and S. Epatha Merkerson; and actors Michael K. Williams, Andy Samberg, Chloë Sevigny and Kal Penn. Programs spotlight author George R.R. Martin; journalists Christiane Amanpour, Ann Curry, Joe Madison and Lisa Ling; author and Facebook executive Sheryl Sandberg; TV hosts Seth Meyers and Michael Strahan; artists Marina Abramović and Kehinde Wiley; politicians Marco Rubio, Tulsi Gabbard and Paul Ryan; Academy Award-winning filmmakers Alejandro G. Iñárritu and Michael Moore; and comedians Tig Notaro and Sarah Silverman. The roots of the guests span the globe, and their family trees are filled with compelling characters — artists and entrepreneurs, abandoned children and missing parents, revolutionaries, soldiers, kings, and ordinary individuals who did remarkable things, laying the groundwork for their successful descendants. Among the inquiries is a mystery that has plagued Curry’s family for her entire life. Merkerson learns of a haunting family connection to an iconic Washington, D.C., institution. A startling revelation for another guest, Washington-based radio talk-show host Joe Madison, led Gates to offer him a bow-out from the series; Madison chose to participate. Also this season is a special episode that examines how science and history can inspire the next generation. The series’ findings underscore the diversity of the American people. “I find it inspiring that our fellow Americans are so determined to explore their own ancestral heritage precisely at a time when immigration has become such a deeply controversial and sensitive matter,” said Gates. “Our series demonstrates each week, in vivid detail and with moving storytelling, that a continuing source of strength for our country is the fact that we are a nation of immigrants.” WETA is encouraging viewers nationwide to explore and share their family history via #FindingYourRoots on Facebook and Twitter, on Facebook.com/FindingYourRootsPBS and @HenryLouisGates, and on the series website, pbs.org/findingyourroots. Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Season Five is a production of McGee Media, Inkwell Films, Kunhardt Films and WETA, in association with Ark Media. Also in the works from Gates, WETA and the Finding Your Roots production team is the riveting history documentary Reconstruction: America After the Civil War, which will premiere in April.

Major corporate support for Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Season Five is provided by Ancestry, Johnson & Johnson and AT&T. Major support is also provided by the Ford Foundation, Candace King Weir, the Lloyd Carney Foundation, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and PBS.

our dazzling stand-alone programs from the BBC Natural History Unit explore how the seasons transform Earth. Spotlighting, respectively, spring, summer, autumn and winter, the films examine the unique opportunities and challenges posed to flora and fauna by each season. Spring brings new life, but it’s also a dash to wake up and get ahead of everyone else. Summer is a time of long days and glorious abundance, but the living isn’t always easy when the temperatures rise. Autumn brings the world’s most spectacular transformations — the last chance to breed, to grow up, to stock up before the cold returns. And during winter — the most magical, dramatic season of all — animals find inventive ways to survive. Earth’s Great Seasons airs on WETA UK as well, Sundays at 9 p.m. starting January 27.

Nature: Attenborough and the Sea Dragon

remarkable chance discovery is about to reveal secrets of a “dragon” — an Ichthyosaur or “fish lizard” — that ruled the ocean at the time of the dinosaurs. Found as a fossil in the eroding cliffs in the southeast area of England called the Jurassic Coast, this fearsome predator could regulate its own body temperature; had astonishingly acute eyesight; and had an impressive set of blade-like teeth and powerful, gripping jaws to hunt and swallow its prey. As the forensic investigation unfolds on Nature, fossil hunter Chris Moore and his team stumble into the 200-million-year-old murder mystery of this extraordinary creature’s fate. Sir David Attenborough hosts the detective story, from the on-site extraction of the fossils to the 3D reconstruction of the creature. He tries to piece together how this super predator lived and died. Also tune in to Nature this month for the two-part film Equus: Story of the Horse (January 16 & 23, 8 p.m.).

istory series American Experience relates a story of greed, hubris and destruction, chronicling the history of Florida’s Everglades — one of nature’s most mysterious and unique ecosystems — and humanity’s attempt to conquer the immense watershed and profit from it, and the ensuing drive to save it. Told through the lives of a handful of colorful and resolute characters, from hucksters to politicians to unlikely activists, The Swamp explores the repeated efforts to transform what was seen as a vast and useless wasteland into an agricultural and urban paradise, ultimately leading to a passionate campaign to preserve America’s greatest wetland and an ongoing competition between the interests of conservation and development. The two-hour film is based in part on the book The Swamp: The Everglades, Florida, and the Politics of Paradise by Michael Grunwald. Other Tuesday 9 p.m. American Experience episodes this month are The Big Burn (January 22) and Surviving the Dust Bowl (January 29).

ETA presents Andrew Davies’ award-winning 1995 adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic Regency romance, starring Colin Firth, Jennifer Ehle and a superb supporting cast. Originally published in 1813, Pride and Prejudice relates the story of witty Elizabeth Bennet, who charms smoldering, haughty Fitzwilliam Darcy against a backdrop of the English countryside, small-town assembly rooms and stately homes. The acclaimed BBC production, which aired on Masterpiece, won Ehle a BAFTA for Best Actress and made Firth an international star. In the story, Mr. Bennet, a country rector, has five daughters without large dowries. His wife has a singular ambition for her progeny: to find them suitable husbands. The arrival of eligible young bachelors in the neighborhood sets off distinctive possibilities for advantageous unions, but the confusions of courtship, the challenges of class status and wealth disparities, the interference of scandal and more must first play their role… Pride and Prejudice airs as well on WETA UK, Mondays at 9 p.m. starting January 14.

new six-part documentary series follows the rise and fall of six infamous 20th-century rulers, profiling them and evaluating commonalities in the methods and tactics they used across multiple decades and continents to establish their regimes and hold and exert power. The Dictator’s Playbook examines the historical, sociological and psychological foundations of the dictatorships of Kim Il Sung, Saddam Hussein, Benito Mussolini (at right), Manuel Noriega, Francisco Franco and Idi Amin. Through historical context and analysis, the series explores how these dictators functioned, how they influenced each other, and why they succeeded or failed. As different as these men were from each other, they each followed a series of steps, from seizing power to eliminating enemies — that form an unwritten “dictator’s playbook.”

orty years after the death of Elvis Presley, two-time Sundance Grand Jury-winning filmmaker Eugene Jarecki takes the King’s 1963 Rolls-Royce on a musical road trip and meditation on modern America. From Tupelo to Memphis to New York, Las Vegas and points between, the journey explores the rise and fall of Elvis as a metaphor for the country he left behind. What emerges is a portrait of the state of the American Dream and a penetrating look at how we got here. Tracing Elvis’ life and career from his birth and meteoric rise to his tragic and untimely end, The King paints a parallel portrait of the nation’s own heights and depths, from its inspired origins to its perennial struggles with race, class, power and money. A diverse, star-studded group of celebrity passengers join the journey, including Alec Baldwin, Roseanne Cash, Chuck D, Emmylou Harris and Ethan Hawke, among others. Independent Lens is funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a private corporation funded by the American people, with additional funding from PBS, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Wyncote Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Queen Mother

ife, monarch and much-loved public figure — Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother (1900-2002) was one of the most respected members of the British royal family. This moving profile pays tribute to a royal icon, revealing the story of one of the most dramatic periods in the Queen Mother’s life and highlighting the moments that ultimately defined her legacy. The program explores how she and King George VI took the throne as the royal family faced a crisis after the abdication of Edward VIII, and how, just a few years later, they steered the country through the darkness of World War II. After George’s death in 1952, Elizabeth forged a new role for herself as a senior matriarch.

n the contemporary Australian comedy-drama 800 Words, George Turner (Erik Thomson) is a popular columnist for a top-selling Sydney newspaper, penning a weekly piece that he insists must be exactly 800 words. After his wife dies, he sets out to start a new life with his family. He buys, on impulse over the internet and unseen, a new home in the tiny (fictional) New Zealand town of Weld, where he vacationed with his parents when he was a child — and breaks the news to his two teenage children, his daughter, Shay (Melina Vidler), and his son, Arlo (Benson Jack Anthony). But the transition proves to be more difficult than anticipated, and through a series of accidents, gossip and misunderstandings, the colorful, inquisitive locals in Weld complicate Turner’s dream of a fresh start. Rumors spread about George’s wife’s death, George insults the town in an article, and more confusion unfolds. The stress of losing a loved one combined with the rapid changes of moving leaves Turner and his children facing an uncertain future.

n Australian comic satire (known by the title Utopia in Australia) explores the collision between bureaucracy and grand ambitions. The series is set inside the offices of the “Nation Building Authority,” a fictional government organization responsible for overseeing major infrastructure projects. Series 1 follows the working lives of a tight-knit team in charge of guiding these grand schemes from announcement to unveiling. Constant shifts in priorities are the order of the day as the staff is asked to come up with plans for everything from new roads and rail lines to airports and high-rise urban developments. Tony Woodford (Rob Stich) is the chief executive, constantly frustrated by his inability to achieve any real results. Nat Russell (Celia Pacquola) is Tony’s deputy, the only other competent person in the office, and she is just as exasperated as Tony. Additional characters in the series include a government liaison, a media manager, project managers and planners, and office assistants, each of whom is comically, utterly dysfunctional.

Also this month: Downton Abbey, Series 6 on Masterpiece wraps up on Wednesdays at 9 p.m.; docudrama Queen Elizabeth’s Secret Agents airs Fridays at 8 p.m. starting January 18; crime drama Wallander continues on Fridays at 9 p.m., entering Series 2 on January 18; the drama Indian Summers on Masterpiece continues Fridays at 10:30 p.m.; legal drama Silk airs Saturdays at 10 p.m. starting December 29; documentary series Nature’s Microworlds continues Sundays at 9 p.m.; crime drama Silent Witness, Series 17 continues Mondays at 10 p.m.; and the drama Love, Lies and Records continues Tuesdays at 10 p.m.

he superstition that a composer’s 9th Symphony will be his or her latest and greatest and could even be cursed is probably Beethoven’s fault. After all, who could hope to match his stunning 9th? In this first NSO Showcase program of 2019, we tempt fate by presenting not one, but two ninth symphonies, as well as another Beethoven masterpiece. We begin with Shostakovich’s 9th Symphony (1945). He told his biographer: “They wanted a fanfare from me, an ode, a majestic ninth...I doubt that Stalin ever questioned his own genius or greatness. But when the war against Hitler was won, he went off the deep end, like a frog puffing himself up to the size of an ox, and now I was supposed to write an apotheosis of Stalin. I simply could not. My stubbornness cost me dearly.” The symphony was banned until 1955. Instead of the triumphant celebration of the end of World War II, Shostakovich wrote a neoclassical, playful work that caused a New York critic to complain, “The Russian composer should not have expressed his feelings about the defeat of Nazism in such a childish manner.” The other ninth on January’s NSO Showcase is Schubert’s 9th Symphony, the “Great,” written one year after he witnessed the premiere of Beethoven’s own 9th. In fact, Schubert famously quotes the Ode to Joy in the final movement, acknowledging the debt every composer pays to Beethoven. Between these works on NSO Showcase, we’ll hear Armenian violinist Sergey Khachatryan, winner of both the Jean Sibelius Violin Competition and the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition, in the solo role on Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. Join us for stellar ninths and more on Wednesday, January 2 at 9 p.m. on Classical WETA 90.9 FM. ASKONAS HOLT

his month on Choral Showcase, we’ll start the New Year with new recordings: highlights from some of the more recent recordings that came our way in 2018. We’ll open the New Year on the January 6 program with a project from conductor Robert Hollingworth called The “Other” Vespers. Since no record of any contemporary performance of Claudio Monteverdi’s famous Solemn Vespers of 1610 survives, Hollingworth reimagines a Vespers performance at St Mark’s Basilica in Venice. Conducting his ensemble I Fagiolini, he introduces music from Monteverdi’s other sacred masterwork, Selva morale e spiritual — “the moral and spiritual wood,” alongside works by some of his contemporaries. On January 13, we feature the second release in a new series of recordings of the symphonies of Ralph Vaughan Williams. Martyn Brabbins leads the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in A Sea Symphony, in which the composer paints a musical portrait of the sea in all its might and mystery, utilizing texts from selected poems by Walt Whitman. The music of Spain is presented January 20, with selections from the medieval Cantigas de Santa Maria by King Alfonso the Wise of Castile, performed by La Capella Reial de Catalunya and Hespèrion XX led by Jordi Savall, and from the 14th-century Codex Las Huelgas with Ensemble Gilles Binchois led by Dominique Vellard. From Renaissance Spain, a mass setting by Sebastian de Vivanco, Missa Assumpsit Jesus with De Profundis led by Robert Hollingworth, and Tenebrae Responsories by Tomas Luis de Victoria with Stile Antico. On January 27, we present music from Westminster Abbey, with the Choir of Westminster Abbey performing a Tudor-era Lady Mass by Nicholas Ludford, and George Frideric Handel’s complete Coronation Anthems with The English Concert led by Simon Preston. Tune in for new choral recordings this month on Choral Showcase, Sundays at 9 p.m.

e ring in the New Year on Front Row Washington with spectacular performances and just a few more things to celebrate. Coming off the Greek Orthodox holiday, Epiphany, on January 7 we listen to guitarist Antigoni Goni’s Marlow Guitar Series Jenny Lin recital that includes Greek Miniatures by Atanas Ourkouzounov and an arrangement of two songs from Epitafios, a song cycle by Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis. Viewed as Greece’s best-known living composer, Theodorakis has composed for film, opera and ballet, and written more than 1,000 songs. On the January 14 program it’s The Art of Preludes and Fugues with pianist Jenny Lin. Her Shenson Chamber Music Concert at the National Museum of Women in the Arts includes alternating preludes and fugues by Dmitri Shostakovich and Johann Sebastian Bach, and music by Galina Ustvolskaya and Philip Glass. Jenny Lin is one of the most respected young pianists today, known for her adventurous programing (as heard in this inventive performance) and charismatic stage presence. January 21 is the Jewish holiday Tu BiShvat, which translates to “New Year of the Trees” and in contemporary Israel is celebrated as an ecological awareness day. On this holiday we listen to a performance of Quatuor Danel at the Phillips Collection, which includes string quartets of Mendelssohn, Shostakovich and Mieczyslaw Weinberg. Weinberg was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1919, and fled to the Soviet Union in 1939 after the start of World War II. His parents stayed in Warsaw and later perished in the Trawniki concentration camp. Although his music was largely ignored by the Soviet authorities (unlike Shostakovich’s), he was still in danger. His father-in-law was assassinated under Stalin’s orders, and the composer himself was arrested for “Jewish bourgeois nationalism.” Shostakovich intervened Quatuor Danel on his behalf to the head of the secret police. Weinberg’s full output wasn’t realized until his death in 1996. Quatuor Danel performs his 3rd string quartet, which includes a rather unusual ending. The month’s Front Row Washington broadcasts conclude on January 28 with cellist Torleif Thedéen and pianist Roland Pöntinen. Their concert at the Phillips Collection (in partnership with the Embassy of Sweden) includes cello and piano works by Beethoven, Schnittke, Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev. Thedéen is regarded as one of the greatest Scandinavian musicians of his generation. He leaped to fame in 1985 by winning three of the world’s most prestigious cello competitions and since been in constant demand as a recitalist, educator, soloist and recording artist.
