A Capitol Fourth
Celebrates Independence Day on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD
W TA Focus J
Cable Risdon
uly heralds the annual Independence Day celebration of the nation’s birthday, when Americans come together to enjoy the spirit of patriotism and fellowship, fun in the sun, and the delights of picnics and cook-outs, live music and fireworks. As per a long-running tradition, WETA will once again help share with the nation the festivities on the National Mall via the live concert broadcast A Capitol Fourth, a WETA co-production with Jerry Colbert of Capital Concerts that airs this month on WETA TV 26 and WETA HD. Of course, the concert on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol and spectacular fireworks display that follows are a cherished summer ritual for many in the Washington area. But the broadcast of A Capitol Fourth is also one of the most popular PBS television events each year for millions of viewers nationwide — and we at WETA are proud to participate in this Fourth of July tradition. On Classical WETA 90.9 FM this month, and on our classical-vocal radio channel VivaLaVoce, we spotlight another celebration — this one of classical music and opera at Virginia’s Castleton Festival, founded by eminent conductor Lorin Maazel and his wife Dietlinde Turban Maazel. We are delighted to present magnificent performances — recorded by WETA staff — from this annual regional music event that showcases world-class music and rising talent and celebrates the power and majesty of classical music. Enjoy A Capitol Fourth and music from the Castleton Festival, and thank you for your support.

artin Clunes stars as the brash doctor Martin Ellingham, whose blunt opinions and tactless manner cause mayhem in a small, quirky Cornish community on the British comic-drama series Doc Martin. Ellingham — once a celebrated London surgeon — flees his job after developing a phobia to blood. After retraining as a general practitioner, he takes a job in the beautiful village of Portwenn, replacing the deceased local doctor. His abrasive personality, however, doesn’t mesh with the sleepy pace in his new surroundings, making for high drama. Tune in as the series starts all over again on July 30.

This year’s broadcast also features the traditional spectacular fireworks display over the National Mall, captured from many vantage points with 20 television cameras stationed around the city and across the Potomac in Virginia. And the show, as always, will be capped with a rousing rendition of an audience favorite — Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, complete with live cannon fire. Downton Abbey
©2010 NICK BRIGGS/ITV FOR MASTERPIECE
W
airs Wednesdays in July at 8 p.m.
ETA reprises the four-part Edwardian spellbinder, created by Oscar-winning writer Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park), starring Hugh Bonneville (Notting Hill), Maggie Smith (Harry Potter), Elizabeth McGovern (A Room with a View), Dan Stevens (Sense & Sensibility) and a host of other superb actors. The miniseries follows the intertwined lives of servants and aristocrats, spotlighting Britain on the verge of dramatic change in 1912. In the storyline, the death of the two direct male heirs to Downton Abbey sparks a family crisis: the current Lord Grantham has only daughters, albeit marriageable ones. His nearest male relative is a lawyer — a middle-class Manchester bachelor — who must learn to manage the sprawling country estate, with its army of devoted, bickering servants; its hunts; garden parties; and sexual intrigues.

oiced by actor Martin Short, Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat guides friends Sally and Nick on fun-filled adventures where they make naturalscience discoveries, from how bees make honey to why owls sleep during the day. Filled with both adventure and silliness, The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! appeals to preschoolers’ natural curiosity and engages them in the process of scientific exploration and discovery. The series introduces scientific inquiry skills, teaching core science concepts and vocabulary, and preparing preschoolers for science curricula. Each episode begins with a question posed by Sally or Nick. Along with the insatiably curious Cat, they travel in his Thinga-ma-jigger, a marvelously Seuss-ian contraption, to find the answers wherever they might be. The kids observe, collect and manage clues, make connections, construct and evaluate theories, and have discussions — all in a preschool-appropriate manner.

ased in Washington, D.C., this cooking series spotlights the culinary traditions and cultural riches of Spain with dynamic chef José Andrés. In each episode, Andrés — who makes his home here and in Spain — explores the exciting flavors of his native country with easy and informative recipes created in his Washington kitchen using products found in the U.S. Each cooking segment is woven into a gastronomic and cultural tour of one of Spain’s 17 vibrant regions, where Andrés introduces many of the nation’s greatest artisan cheese makers, wine makers and restaurateurs. Visiting the source and inspiration of the dishes he prepares in his own kitchen, the chef demonstrates that the flavors made in Spain can be created at home. Andrés is chef/owner of ThinkFoodGroup, the management company for Washington’s popular dining spots Café Atlántico, Zaytinya, Oyamel, Jaleo (one of America’s first successful tapas restaurants) and minibar by josé andrés, featuring avant garde Spanish cuisine.

osted by Dean Johnson, here with his colleague Miriam Johnson (no relation), Hometime is a long-running home improvement series that aims to help homeowners achieve professional-looking results from their home renovation projects. The Hometime crew tackles everything from landscaping, painting, and kitchen facelifts to managing new construction and major additions to older houses. The programs demonstrate both do-it-yourself- and contractor-performed projects, ranging from simple weekend projects to complete homes. Hometime episodes have covered an enormous range of home construction and maintenance projects. Originally conceived as a series of videotapes distributed through hardware stores and home centers, the program premiered on television in 1986, founded by Dean Johnson to provide do-it-yourselfers with a new source of how-to information.

lassical WETA’s weekly Sunday night choral music broadcast Choral Showcase spotlights American singing in the first three programs in July. On July 3, the day before Independence Day, the program features Masses by three Americans. Gunther Schuller conducts John Knowles Paine’s Mass, which, reflecting its composition in the 19th century, is still searching for an American voice. Leonard Bernstein’s Missa brevis, on the other hand, is thoroughly American. It was composed after Bernstein’s Mass (which was written for the opening of the Kennedy Center), although based on material from many years before. Libby Larsen’s Mass for the Earth (Missa Gaia) concludes the July 3 program, and uses non-liturgical texts to address humans’ relationship with our world. The July 10 program is built around Daniel Pinkham’s Wedding Cantata, with the July 17 program dedicated to the Magnificat, including Alan Hovhaness’s setting. Presenting Classical Music All Day, Every Day With David Ginder, mornings • Marilyn Cooley, middays • John Chester, afternoons/overnights • Nicole Lacroix, evenings And hosting on the weekend: Jean Inaba, mornings • Operas from the Castleton Festival Judy Gruber, afternoons • Chip Brienza, evenings
