urveying the engaging offerings in WETA’s television and radio broadcasts in July, one can experience in just one month a great many of WETA’s strengths as a producer of high-quality programming. Creating superb content is one of our important services to the public. On WETA TV 26 and WETA HD, for example, we bring to a nationwide audience the annual Independence Day concert A Capitol Fourth, live from the National Mall. On Classical WETA 90.9 FM we proudly showcase classical music in the nation’s capital — Front Row Washington presents world-class performances recorded live in Greater Washington, bringing sublime music to area listeners. Also this month, we reprise several WETA TV 26 productions created exclusively for our local television audience: the award-winning documentaries Washington in the ’60s and Washington in the ’70s and programs Breakfast in Washington and Neighborhood Eats in the series The WETA Guide. Wrapping up the month, and airing during the first week of August as well, is a broadcast of the acclaimed World War II history documentary THE WAR, created for the nation by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick in partnership with WETA. WETA Earns an Arlington “ABBIE” Award

n this year of WETA’s Fiftieth Anniversary celebration of service to the public, and reflecting the company’s roots in the community of Arlington, Virginia, WETA has been honored with the 2012 Large Business of the Year award — an ABBIE — from the Arlington Chamber of Commerce. The award — among the Chamber’s Best Business Awards — was presented at the organization’s May banquet at the Sheraton National Hotel in Arlington. WETA Chief Operating Officer Joe Bruns was on hand to receive the award on behalf of the organization, alongside members of the WETA Community Advisory Council.

A WETA CO-PRODUCTION

he annual Independence Day broadcast celebrates America’s birthday (the 236th) with a host of performances by top musical artists, including acclaimed Broadway and television star Megan Hilty (Smash); singer-songwriter Javier Colon (winner of The Voice); R&B superstars Kool & the Gang; four-time Tony-nominated Broadway star Kelli O’Hara; and the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of pops conductor Jack Everly. The co-production of Jerry Colbert of Capital Concerts and WETA is broadcast live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. This year’s program, hosted by Tom Bergeron (of Dancing with the Stars), includes a special Olympic send-off to Team USA, and a musical tribute to beloved American entertainer Gene Kelly. Topping off the program is the annual fireworks display over the National Mall, captured by 20 cameras stationed around the city. A Capitol Fourth is made possible by grants from The Boeing Company, National Park Service, Department of the Army, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, public television viewers and PBS.

The series, based on Cruickshank’s book “The Country House Revealed — A Secret History of the British Ancestral Home,” offers a rare look behind the estate walls, spotlighting properties in England, Northern Ireland and Scotland — from a range of architectural periods — that enjoy secure, well-funded ownership and demonstrating that these great houses can be sustainable.

Paris Series Spotlights “The City of Lights”

n a unique mixture of cultural history, travel guide and insight into contemporary Paris life, art historian and Parisian Sandrine Voillet explores the tempestuous story, immortal beauty and Bohemian soul of the city she adores in the BBC series Paris. Spotlighting more than 400 years of history — from the era of the lavish court of the Sun King to the decadence of revolutionary Paris; from the jazz explosion of the Thirties to the Sixties heyday of hedonism — Voillet celebrates the art, literature, music and design of France’s capital. She visits some of the city’s best-known sites — including the Basilica of Sacré Coeur, the Eiffel Tower and the Catacombs — and the guided tour also includes the inner sancta of regular Paris life: the iconic local café and marketplace.

New Series Market Warriors Features Antiques Competition Mondays at 9 p.m., premiering July 16

he new series Market Warriors, from the producers of Antiques Roadshow, presents a new adventure for treasure seekers. The program, a competition, follows four antiques pickers on a nationwide treasure hunt as they scour flea markets for antiques and vintage valuables with an eye toward selling their finds for profit at auction. Actor/comedian Fred Willard (Best in Show, Modern Family), himself a collector, is the series off-screen host, offering wry commentary throughout the show. In each episode, the pickers — (l-r) appraiser and antiques dealer John Bruno, appraiser Miller Gaffney, lifelong collector Bob Richter and antiques business owner Kevin Bruneau — travel to different market locations across the country to select and purchase items with a set amount of money. They apply their knowledge and skills to real financial transactions and then discover the current value of the objects as only the marketplace can determine. The sale of pickers’ items takes place at an auction in a different location; the picker whose objects earn the highest total profit is the winner of that episode. Market Warriors is sponsored by PBS through the support of public television viewers.

irst up on Masterpiece this month — on July 1 — is a new spin-off from the beloved 33-episode series Inspector Morse. The new series Endeavour stars Shaun Evans (left) as Detective Constable Endeavour Morse, turning back the clock to 1965 to follow the great sleuth as a rookie, cutting his teeth on his first cases. Evoking the conflict between tradition and the new youth culture of the ’60s, Endeavour answers a lot of questions about the formative years of young Morse. Masterpiece in July also presents new episodes of the popular detective series Inspector Lewis, starring Kevin Whately (who was Sgt. Lewis in Inspector Morse) in the title role and Laurence Fox as Lewis’s young colleague DS Hathaway. Like Morse, the two investigate murder cases in the academic atmosphere of Oxford, England. Inspector Lewis, Series V airs Sundays, July 8–29. For more Masterpiece: Mystery! in July, watch for reprised Inspector Lewis cases (Series IV) at 10:30 p.m. on Sunday nights; and, as part of the Thursday night mystery lineup, three Miss Marple cases (July 5–19). Set in a beautiful fictional Oxfordshire village, the storyline follows the newly assigned vicar following the 1992 changes in the Church of England that permitted the ordination of women. The congregation, all six faithful — and eccentric — souls, reacts to her arrival with a mixture of wonder and horror. David Horton (Gary Waldhorn), autocratic head of the parish council, is appalled, but Reverend Geraldine Granger steps full of confidence and optimism into Dibley’s quaint world. et in Oxfordshire in the 1880s, and adapted by the BBC from Flora Thompson’s trilogy of semi-autobiographical novels, the costume drama Lark Rise to Candleford depicts the last bright flickering of a now-vanished way of life in the countryside, as Victorian England reached into the 20th century. The series follows the relationship of two contrasting communities: Lark Rise, the small hamlet gently holding on to the past, and Candleford, the small market town bustling into the future. Seen through the eyes of young Laura (Olivia Hallinan) (r), their inhabitants — farm workers, craftsmen and gentry — endure upheavals and struggles as change inexorably arrives. At the series’ outset, Laura, from Lark Rise, takes a job in the Candleford Post Office, run by her mercurial cousin Dorcas (Julia Sawalha).

eep and the Big Wide World is an Emmy Award–winning science and math series that features a chick named Peep, a robin (Chirp), an endearing duck (Quack), and an extended family of friends. The series is set in and around a large urban park — a “big wide world” that the characters enjoy exploring. Each episode contains two animated Peep stories and two live-action segments featuring real kids playing and experimenting with math and science concepts with the help of their parents or grandparents. In these segments, families have fun engaging in math and science play using everyday objects — for example, building cardboard houses for stuffed animals, creating a mud city, making up codes, guessing sounds while blindfolded, measuring footsteps, playing with soap, and preparing a meal. All Peep episodes conclude with seven-minute, animated Pocoyo segments narrated by British actor-comedian Stephen Fry. These award– winning animated shorts tell the story of a curious young boy and his animal friends, encouraging preschoolers to learn through laughter and play. Major funding for Peep and the Big Wide World is provided by the National Science Foundation.

PostClassical Ensemble on Front Row Washington he PostClassical Ensemble makes its debut on Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s local, weekly concert broadcast Front Row Washington on Monday night, July 2 at 9 p.m. with a program that reflects PCE’s style and sound. Founded in 2003 as an experimental orchestral laboratory by Angel Gil-Ordóñez (music director) and Joseph Horowitz (artistic director,) PostClassical Ensemble has earned a reputation for engaging programming that goes beyond the traditional concert hall experience. The Classical WETA broadcast includes performances from three different PostClassical Ensemble events, including an improvisation on Gershwin’s Second Prelude by pianist Genadi Zagor as well as the Paul Whiteman Band’s version of Rhapsody in Blue, scored by Ferde Grofé. The ensemble’s emphasis on music of the Americas and Spain is further represented by Manuel de Falla’s Nights in the Gardens of Spain with pianist Pedro Carboné, and Igor Stravinsky’s Concerto for Piano and Winds with pianist Alexander Toradze.

n July 1, to mark the Independence Day holiday, the Classical WETA 90.9 FM Sunday-night broadcast Choral Showcase features an all-American program that includes music from Philip Glass’s Symphony No. 5 (which bridges past, present and future); Randall Thompson’s gloriously moving setting of “Alleluia”; and “The Promise of Living” from Aaron Copland’s Depression era-inspired opera, The Tender Land. Classical WETA has also scheduled music from John Knowles Paine’s Mass (conducted by Gunther Schuller), and the “Gloria” from Paul Paray’s “Joan of Arc” Mass (written for the 500th anniversary of her death). True, Paul Paray was French, but, as music director of the Detroit Symphony in the 1950s, he was an important and inspiring part of American music-making.
