his month, WETA is once again proud to partner with Capital Concerts to bring to a nationwide audience the annual Independence Day concert and fireworks broadcast A Capitol Fourth, live from the National Mall. The popular program is among the most-watched offerings in our television schedule each year. A top producer of new content for PBS, WETA creates more than 350 hours of programming each year, and the station’s offerings on WETA TV 26 and WETA HD in July illuminate the breadth of our television production portfolio. e was considered the funniest man on earth — a brilliant performer on the lecture circuit who could entertain almost any audience — and a spectacularly inept businessman whose countless schemes to get rich quick threatened again and again to bring him to ruin.” These words, spoken at the beginning of Mark Twain — the two-part, four-hour 2002 documentary created by Ken Burns in collaboration with WETA — paint a portrait of America’s great storyteller, the man born Samuel Langhorne Clemens but known to the world as Mark Twain, the successful humorist and writer whose brilliant work remains an influential part of the nation’s literary landscape. The film, produced by Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan, was directed by Burns and written by Duncan and Geoffrey C. Ward. It explores Twain’s humble beginnings, meteoric rise to fame and the burden and tragedy of personal hardships endured — Clemens, a devoted family man, lost five loved ones to tragedies and had to pull himself out of debt after bad investments left him virtually penniless. Episode one ends with the publication of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the controversial novel that writer Russell Banks calls our “Homeric epic,” the definitive parable of a nation struggling with its racial identity after the Civil War. In episode two, Burns explores the other side of the writer — the Clemens side — an American icon who falls hard with failure.

A Capitol Fourth ETA celebrates the nation’s birthday with an annual tradition, the Independence Day production A Capitol Fourth, broadcast live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. Each year, WETA helps bring the concert and fireworks event to a nationwide audience in partnership with producer Jerry Colbert of Capital Concerts. Tom Bergeron again hosts the performance, which features Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Frankie Valli, pop music icon Patti LaBelle; the Muppets; recording artists Phillip Phillips and Jordin Sparks; singer-songwriter Michael McDonald; country music superstar Sara Evans; singer-songwriter Kendall Schmidt; Broadway star Kelli O’Hara; with the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Jack Everly. In celebration of the 200th anniversary of the national anthem, composer John Williams conducts a special new arrangement of the “Star Spangled Banner” with the NSO, The Joint Armed Forces Chorus, the Choral Arts Society of Washington and the U.S. Army Herald Trumpets. The evening, as per tradition, is capped by the stellar annual fireworks display and rousing rendition of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. Stay tuned following the program for the presentation WETA D.C. Fireworks Extravaganza, followed by a rebroadcast of A Capitol Fourth.

xciting drama awaits on Masterpiece as rookie Detective Constable Morse, portrayed by Shaun Evans (right, with Roger Allam as DI Fred Thursday), continues his Oxford investigations in the Inspector Morse prequel Endeavour, Series 2, airing on three Sundays in July. The cases, investigating murders at a girls’ school (“Nocturne,” July 6), a strangler on the loose (“Sway,” July 13), and corruption on the police force (“Neverland,” July 20), illuminate the early days of author Colin Dexter’s iconic sleuth. Then, on July 27, David Suchet returns to Masterpiece in his signature role as Belgian super-sleuth Hercule Poirot, who helps the police solve crimes in Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot, Series 12. Suchet appears in two new mysteries, “The Big Four” in July and “Dead Man’s Folly” in August. The July case, “The Big Four,” was adapted by Mark Gatiss (Sherlock co-creator, writer and actor) and plunges Poirot into a world of global espionage in the days before World War II. In other July mystery series on WETA TV 26 and WETA HD, Midsomer Murders continues on Thursday nights and Sunday evenings, and Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, starring Essie Davis as an independent sleuth in 1920s Melbourne, Australia, airs each Monday. My Wild Affair airs July 16–August 6 at 8 p.m. NOVA: Australia’s First 4 Billion Years airs Wednesdays, July 16–August 6 at 9 p.m. Sex in the Wild airs July 16–August 6 at 10 p.m.

ETA TV 26 and WETA HD traditionally feature science and nature NOVA programming each Wednesday night, including offerings from long-running series Nature and NOVA. This month, tune in for three special four-part miniseries that begin on July 16. The first, at 8 p.m., My Wild Affair, features extraordinary stories of the bonds between humans and their animal companions, including an orphaned baby elephant (July 16), an orangutan raised as a human child (July 23), a rhinoceros raised in suburbia (July 30) and a harbor seal that entered the human world but remained wild at heart (August 6). The first program, The Elephant Who Found a Mom, explores how the death of a baby elephant led to the rescue of more than 150 elephant orphans by human foster parent Daphne Sheldrick (above, with “Schmetty”). At 9 p.m., beginning July 16, WETA reprises the intriguing NOVA miniseries Australia’s First 4 Billion Years, which explores how the continent has preserved the story of its origins, taking a journey through time from the birth of the Earth to the emergence of the world we know today. Host and geologist Richard Smith is the tour guide through changing landscapes and evolutionary biology, meeting titanic dinosaurs and giant kangaroos, sea monsters and prehistoric crustaceans, disappearing mountains and deadly asteroids. The series Sex in the Wild, at 10 p.m., also highlights the natural world, illuminating four distinct species from a biological perspective while traveling from the Okavango Delta in Botswana to the Australian Outback, from a Borneo rainforest to the waters of New Zealand. Presented by anatomist Joy Reidenberg (top right, with a joey) and veterinarian Mark Evans, the four programs examine the reproductive behaviors of elephants (July 16), orangutans (July 23), kangaroos (July 30) and whales (August 6) — taking an in-depth look at how these animals find and woo the opposite sex, mate, give birth and rear their young in extreme environments. s part of history programming on Tuesday nights on WETA TV 26 and WETA HD, the three-part documentary series Time Scanners employs new laser technology to explore several of the world’s most iconic historical sites in a way never before seen. Airing on Tuesdays at 8 p.m., the programs use cutting-edge technology that can “read” buildings, ruins and landscapes from ancient worlds to reveal physical and forensic history. Steve Burrows, one of the world’s foremost structural engineers, leads a team of investigators, including pioneering laser-scanning researchers, to unlock the secrets of great engineering achievements. Each episode probes a great landmark, exploring Egyptian Pyramids (July 1), St. Paul’s Cathedral in London (July 8), and the ancient city of Petra in Jordan (July 15). Also debuting on Tuesdays in July is History Detectives Special Investigations, airing at 9 p.m. The reformatted History Detectives series now explores intriguing historical mysteries, introducing the fresh perspective of a new detective and focusing on a single story per hour. Veteran team members Tukufu Zuberi and Wes Cowan join forces with new host Kaiama Glover to explore cold cases, including a Civil War-era maritime disaster (July 1), a series of Texas murders (July 8), the World War II disappearance of band leader Glenn Miller (July 15), and the fate of labor leader Jimmy Hoffa (July 22). rom Beethoven to blues” may sound like a cliché, but in the case of the Carpe Diem String Quartet, it’s an integral part of their engaging, energetic concerts. Hear this boundary-breaking ensemble for yourself on Elisabeth Adkins & Monday, July 7 at 9 p.m. as the ClasEdward Newman sical WETA 90.9 FM broadcast Front Row Washington presents the Carpe Diem String Quartet in a recital presented by Dumbarton Concerts in Georgetown. Calling the quartet’s playing “extraordinary,” Washington Post reviewer Robert Battey went on to say, “Among these contemporary quartets who speak in different tongues, the Carpe Diem is the best one out there.” This recital features both new works and traditional repertoire, including Beethoven’s String Quartet in F Major, Op. 59, No.1, and a suite written by Carpe Diem’s violist Korine Fujiwara. Born in Billings, Montana, Ms. Fujiwara composed “Fiddle Suite: Montana” as an homage to her home state. Completing their nod to American music, Carpe Diem performs Bruce Wolosoff’s Carpe Diem bluesy “5 O’Clock Shadow” and String Quartet Pittsburgh composer Joseph Kern’s arresting “Iron City.” The sight of moving vans is a common one in the D.C. area, but in late July, a van will pull up to the house of one of our area’s most dedicated musical couples: violinist Elisabeth Adkins and her husband, pianist Edward Newman. Many symphony-goers will recognize Ms. Adkins as the National Symphony Orchestra’s Associate Concertmaster — a position she was awarded at the age of 25 by then-NSO Music Director Mstislav Rostropovich. After 31 seasons with the NSO, Ms. Adkins is leaving Washington, D.C. to take up her new job as professor of violin at Texas Christian University School of Music in Fort Worth, Texas. This past April, Ms. Adkins and her husband Edward Newman presented a benefit concert and farewell celebration for the Washington Conservatory of Music in Bethesda, Maryland. Front Row Washington presents this Adkins-Newman Duo recital on the July 21, 9 p.m. broadcast, featuring Mr. Newman playing Bach’s Italian Concerto BWV 971 as well as works by Chopin. Together, the Duo performs Beethoven’s Sonata for Violin and Piano No.8 in G major, Op. 30, No.3, and Gabriel Pierné’s Sonata for Violin and Piano, Op. 36. You won’t want to miss this touching recital, as the Adkins-Newman Duo brings to a close their decades-long career of great music-making and teaching in the national capital area.

New Recordings on Choral Showcase Sundays at 9 p.m.

uly’s Choral Showcase programs on Classical WETA 90.9 FM all air new recordings — two in the usual sense, one a new CD of a new piece, and one a reconstruction of the original. On July 6, marking the Independence Day weekend, the broadcast presents a piece written in 2012 by Richard Danielpour, who says he’s an American with a Middle Eastern memory. (His parents were born in Iran.) His oratorio Toward a Season of Peace, setting multiple languages, explores how Jews, Muslims and Christians all speak of peace, but pursue violence and wage war anyway, in the name of religion. Danielpour’s visceral work is in three parts, focusing on war, the choice between war and peace, and the promise of peace through forgiveness. The Pacific Chorale and Symphony CD on Naxos is the world premiere recording. On July 27, we explore the Mozart Requiem. Most of the mysteries about this piece have been more-or-less solved, but discussion continues about who did the best job completing it after Mozart’s death. The Dunedin Consort’s performance on the Linn label shows (in fine notes by conductor John Butt) that, although it’s pretty easy to criticize first completer Franz Süssmayr’s work and several new versions have been done in recent decades, Süssmayr remains the only person who knew Mozart and had personal experience with the musical life of the time. Other new Choral Showcase performances this month are of Carmina Burana by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir conducted by Hans Graf on July 13, and Bach’s St. John Passion with Evangelist James Gilchrist and the Academy of Ancient Music conducted by Richard Egarr on July 20.

n 1875, Antonín Dvoˇrák’s two-day-old baby, Josefa, died. He turned to music to assuage his grief and began to compose the Stabat Mater, based on the 13th-century poem recounting the suffering of Mary at the Cross. Dvoˇrák put the piece aside to work on other projects, until tragedy struck again. In August 1877, his ten-month-old daughter, Rose, died after swallowing poison. One month later, death visited the Dvoˇrák household once more, and his three-year-old son, Otokar, succumbed to smallpox. Within two years, the Dvoˇráks had lost all three of their children. (The couple went on to have six more who fortunately all survived to adulthood.) In the midst of his unfathomable suffering, Dvoˇrák, a devout Catholic, turned once again to the Stabat Mater, and found solace in its transcendent message. Thus he created what has been called the first Czech sacred masterpiece, and one that brought him international fame, especially in England and America. The Stabat Mater is a monumental work, which requires substantial forces. Dvoˇrák himself conducted the piece with 1,000 performers at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
