The Annual Concert Marks Independence Day on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD

WETA Focus W

ETA demonstrates a steadfast commitment to the arts, sharing vibrant performing arts from the nation’s capital with local and national audiences via dazzling television productions. This month, we are once again delighted and privileged to bring to viewers throughout Greater Washington and across the nation the annual Independence Day concert and fireworks special A Capitol Fourth, created in partnership with our friends at Capital Concerts. Marking its 35th anniversary on the air this year, the production — capturing the proceedings live on the National Mall — is one of the most popular programs of the annual public television calendar. This fall, WETA will create and share more arts offerings as we present productions of annual programs The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize (next spotlighting honoree Eddie Murphy) and The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song; and we hope to collaborate with the White House again this year on another special concert production in our series In Performance at the White House. Among additional programming in July, you will find an array of superb viewing choices, from ongoing Masterpiece swashbuckler Poldark to history-themed specials Humanity from Space and The Bomb; from intriguing science and nature miniseries Operation Wild and Life on the Reef to exciting mysteries on Thursdays and now Saturday nights too. Enjoy our July offerings, and thank you for your support of WETA.

New WETA Online Video Series Not THAT D.C. Posting new mini-documentaries through June and July

W

WETA

ETA Digital Media staff have created a new online video series, Not THAT D.C., that features a collection of brief documentaries four to five minutes in length that highlight some of the most interesting, out-of-the-ordinary activities in the national capital area. A new video is being released each Monday at the project’s site weta.org/notthatdc, from June 1 through July 20. The project grew out of generous grants from PBS, which provided training and camera equipment to foster the creation of original web video content. WETA staff focused their documentary efforts on exploring eclectic pastimes that run counter to Washington’s buttoned-down stereotype — hence the “Not THAT D.C.” title. Videos produced so far include Parkour (Monday, June 1), following D.C. parkour athletes; D.C. Tweed Ride (Monday, June 8), a high-fashion local bicycle trek; Paddleboard Yoga (Monday, June 15), spotlighting floating yoga (FLOYO) in Annapolis; DC Rollergirls (Monday, June 22), a look inside the local roller derby league; and Confederate Reenactors (Monday, June 29), featuring Civil War hobbyists. In July, WETA will present the videos Maryland’s Ping Pong Academy (July 6); Vintage Baseball (July 13); and Sneakerheads (July 20). To share your idea for a video for future seasons of the series, contact WETA Digital Media staff via email at notthatdc@weta.org.

opular British detective series Midsomer Murders continues with episodes never before seen on WETA Television as Series 10 commences Thursday, July 2 at 9 p.m. Starring John Nettles as the perceptive and meticulous criminal investigator Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby, and Jason Hughes as his sidekick, Sgt. Benjamin Jones, each episode is set in the deceptively idyllic fictional English county of Midsomer. The suspenseful series is based on the popular novels of Caroline Graham and features an eccentric cast of characters, ubiquitous red herrings and quaint countryside scenery. In this season, among their cases, Barnaby and Jones probe the death of a mischievous trickster with a double life and the murder of a member of one Barnaby’s favorite old rock music acts. In another investigation, Barnaby himself becomes a suspect after a photographer is murdered shortly after exhibiting a compromising picture of the detective, and Jones must crack the case.

new documentary film, The Bomb, tells the story of the invention of the most powerful, destructive device ever created, outlining how America developed the nuclear bomb, how it changed the world and how it continues to loom large in our lives. Airing in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Trinity Test, the detonation of the first atomic bomb, the program highlights how humans harnessed this incredible power and what challenges we have faced living with it for seven decades. Through state-of-the-art transfer techniques that have turned recently declassified photos into vivid footage, viewers can witness the raw power and strangely compelling beauty of rare imagery of above-ground nuclear tests. The Bomb focuses on the choices society has made — and continues to make — to live with this invention that could destroy the planet. Included are interviews with historians Richard Rhodes, Martin Sherwin, Robert Norris, Sergei Khrushchev and others, along with men and women who helped build the weapon piece by piece. The film also features former Secretary of State George Shultz and former Secretary of Defense William Perry, who reveal how the bomb was viewed inside government circles, as well as witnesses who hold firsthand memories of seeing the first mushroom clouds fill the skies.

Uranium: Twisting the Dragon’s Tail eginning after The Bomb on July 28, Uranium: Twisting the Dragon’s Tail explores the history and significance of a chemical element that has shaped the modern world. The film features host and physicist Dr. Derek Muller (right) unlocking the mysteries of uranium, one of Earth’s most controversial elements. Filmed on five continents, the two-part program presents the story of uranium’s footprint on the world. Muller embarks on an epic journey across the globe to explain the details of the element’s birth and life. Born from the collapse of a star, uranium has brought hope, progress and destruction — revolutionizing society from medicine to warfare. It has profoundly shaped the past, will change the future and will exist long after humans have left the Earth. “We are who we are because of uranium,” Muller says. “It unlocks the secrets of the universe and reveals the nature of reality. It’s both a dream of clean limitless power and a nightmare of a silent, poisoned Earth.”

NOVA: Chasing Pluto

N

airs Wednesday, July 15 at 9 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD

OVA captures NASA probe New Horizons’ historic flyby of Pluto, the culmination of the spacecraft’s nine-year, three-billion-mile journey to reveal the first-ever detailed images of this strange, icy world at the very edge of our solar system. Launched in January 2006 from Cape Canaveral, New Horizons tested its capabilities while passing Jupiter in 2007 and will now make the first flyby of the dwarf planet Pluto on July 14. After NOVA: Chasing Pluto (9 p.m.), at 10 p.m. WETA reprises the 2014 documentary To Catch a Comet, which details the challenges of the 10-year, four-million-mile journey of the European Space Agency’s spacecraft Rosetta as, in a history-making feat, it landed on a comet in November and returned data from the surface.

he fascinating seasons of marine life are on display in Life on the Reef, a new three-part series that explores the mysteries and hardships of the world’s greatest marine wilderness. The documentary examines the array of life in and around one of Earth’s most extraordinary and endangered places, Australia’s Great Barrier Reef — and the efforts to protect it. Amid the fringing reefs, coral cays and islands of the Torres Strait, the human residents living on the Great Barrier Reef seek to find the critical balance between their needs and those of a diminishing natural world. Life on the Reef combines documentary storytelling with cutting-edge cinematography to present a unique angle on Australia’s great natural icon. The series goes above and beneath the waters to see how nature adapts to the changing seasons throughout the year.

WETA UK Highlights Vera, Season 5

airs Fridays at 9 p.m. on WETA UK, beginning July 17

ITV/GALLOWGATE

opular British crime drama Vera is back for a fifth season of four episodes (the new season was preempted in April and now airs for the first time). Based on the characters from the popular series of novels by Ann Cleeves, the production by ITV/Gallowgate follows the obsessive and driven Detective Chief Inspector (DCI) Vera Stanhope as she tries to crack some of the toughest cases in Northumberland. Brenda Blethyn reprises her role as the central character, whose offbeat manner and frumpy appearance belie a knack for catching killers; however, she’ll be getting a new sidekick in Season 5. Cast member David Leon, who played Vera’s right-hand man Joe Ashworth, has departed the show, as his character has received a promotion. Vera is joined instead by Detective Sergeant (DS) Aiden Healey, played by Kenny Doughty. Episode One follows Vera and Aiden as they investigate a mysterious death at a caravan park.

In the crime series, two gardening enthusiasts, portrayed by Felicity Kendal and Pam Ferris, find themselves caught up in a series of murder cases. Brought together by the sudden death of a mutual friend, lecturer Rosemary Boxer and newly divorced former policewoman Laura Thyme discover a shared passion for horticulture — and a talent for investigation. Combining beautiful British countryside and estate locations, gripping stories and engaging performances, the storyline features two women looking for a new direction after major changes in their lives.

auline Collins stars in the reprised series The Ambassador, a powerful, thrilling drama set in a world of deception, mistrust and betrayal. Collins plays Ambassador Harriet Smith, who holds one of Britain’s most coveted embassy posts as emissary to Ireland. John Stone, played by Denis Lawson, is Harriet’s determined commercial attaché and main aide. But Stone also answers to another master — MI6 (the British Intelligence Agency). The Ambassador’s job as troubleshooter for Britain takes her into a sinister and dangerous world far removed from the cocktail parties of Downing Street, and the episodes explore political themes and the personal and professional pressures in Harriet’s life. The series was created by award-winning writer Russell Lewis (Inspector Morse, Sharpe) and filmed on location in Dublin.

Also this month on WETA UK: Popular crime drama Midsomer Murders enters Series X beginning July 6, airing Mondays at 9 p.m.; and during the week of July 13 it also begins airing on Wednesdays at 10:30 p.m. Also, quirky detective series Dalziel & Pascoe enters Season VI on Saturday, July 18 at 10 p.m.; the documentary miniseries Secret Life of Elephants begins airing Sunday, July 12 at 8 p.m.; and Whitechapel, Series III (left) continues on Saturday nights at 8 p.m.

W

ith Wolf Trap’s Filene Center in full swing throughout the summer, Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s weekly local concert program Front Row Washington goes just up the road to celebrate chamber music at Wolf Trap’s other performance space, The Barns. We begin by extending the July 4 holiday weekend into Monday night, July 6 with a performance by the Miró Quartet of Charles Ives’ very first string quartet, “A Revival Service,” which the young composer wrote as a homework assignment while a student at Yale. That’s followed by Dvorˇák’s ever-popular “American” string quartet. On Monday night, July 13 we present a fabulous recital by a husband/wife duo whose bio is awash in superlatives. Named Musical America’s “Musicians of the Year” in 2012, former Emerson String Quartet cellist David Finckel and his wife, pianist Wu Han, have served as artistic directors of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center since 2004. They’re also founders and artistic directors of Music@Menlo in Silicon Valley, and in 1997 launched ArtistLed records, classical music’s first musician-directed Internet-based recording company. Their Chamber Music at The Barns at Wolf Trap recital spans three composers from youthful exuberance to mature mastery. Richard Strauss’ Sonata for Cello and Piano was written when the 17-year-old composer was in love with another man’s wife. That’s followed by Edvard

Grieg’s cello sonata, which the 40-year-old composer penned for his brother. The program concludes with César Franck’s iconic Violin Sonata. Written by the 63-year-old composer for violinist Eugene Ysaÿe’s wedding, the work was so popular it was transcribed for flute, viola, cello and even tuba, with this performance featuring David Finckel’s own arrangement for cello. You also won’t want to miss pianist Joyce Yang’s Chamber Music at The Barns at Wolf Trap recital on the July 20 broadcast of Front Row Washington. The Avery Fisher Career Grant winner and silver medalist at the Van Cliburn International Competition performs works by Beethoven and Chopin, along with Schumann’s Fantasiestücke and New York-born composer Lowell Liebermann’s work, Gargoyles. We wrap up our month-long survey of Chamber Music at The Barns at Wolf Trap on Monday, July 27 with North America’s premier wind quintet, Imani Winds. Comprised of flute, oboe, clarinet, French horn, and bassoon, the ensemble presents Valerie Coleman’s Red Clay and Mississippi Delta; jazz pianist Jason Moran’s Cane, composed for the group; and arrangements of Debussy’s Bruyères and Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. Front Row Washington airs Mondays at 9 p.m. and is hosted by Classical WETA announcer Nicole Lacroix.

Classical WETA Announcers in the Community: July 11: Nicole Lacroix welcomes the audience at The National Symphony Orchestra’s performance of Beethoven and Bruch with Sarah Chang at Wolf Trap. July 24: Deborah Lamberton introduces the Wolf Trap Opera & National Symphony Orchestra performance “Verdi’s Aida in Concert” at Wolf Trap. August 7: Marilyn Cooley welcomes the audience at the Wolf Trap Opera/National Symphony Orchestra/Choral Arts performance Madama Butterfly at Wolf Trap.

SCOTT SUCHMAN/NSO

July 1 NSO Showcase: Tchaikovsky and Eschenbach

L

ast winter, the National Symphony Orchestra presented a three-week festival at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts: Fantasy & Fate: Tchaikovsky Christoph Masterworks. This festival showcased a variety of favorite and lesser-known works Eschenbach by the ever-popular composer. On July 1, the Classical WETA 90.9 FM program NSO Showcase will broadcast highlights from the event, all conducted by Maestro Christoph Eschenbach. There are some exciting discoveries in the program: two of the featured pieces, Fatum, Op. 77 and the Hamlet Fantasy Overture after Shakespeare, Op.67, had not been played by the NSO for more than 20 years. In fact, if Tchaikovsky had had his way, we would never have heard his early symphonic fantasy, Fatum, because he destroyed it following a cruel review by Mily Balakirev. It was not until three years after the composer’s death that the piece was reconstructed and finally performed. The 1888 Hamlet, the last of Tchaikovsky’s Shakespearean overtures, was more successful, immediately bringing listeners under the haunting spell of Elsinore castle. In the more familiar Tchaikovsky repertoire, our NSO Showcase program will feature German violinist Arabella Steinbacher as soloist in the celebrated Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 35. Her performance was so dynamic, recalls Washington Post music critic Robert Battey, that it “drew a standing ovation in the middle of the concerto, something I’ve never seen before.” The program ends with the Symphony No.4 in F minor, Op. 36, written in the same year as the Concerto. NSO violinist Glenn Donnellan (he is the one who has played a violin fashioned from a baseball bat — the “batolin”) describes the Fourth as “one of the grand slams of symphonies.” Don’t miss Christoph Eschenbach and Tchaikovsky — a unique opportunity to discover the composer’s two rarelyheard gems and to revel in the splendor of his Violin Concerto and Fourth Symphony — on NSO Showcase, Wednesday evening, July 1 at 9 p.m. Visit classicalweta.org to learn more about the broadcast. NSO Showcase takes a summer hiatus after the July broadcast and will return in the fall on Classical WETA 90.9 FM.

W

Randall hy is Randall Thompson’s Thompson most beloved work so solemn? And how can such a sad piece be a setting of the joyous word, “Alleluia?” Thompson’s Alleluia is an a cappella work written for the Tanglewood Festival and first performed there. Serge Koussevitsky, long-time director of the Festival (and Boston Symphony music director), wanted a fanfare for voices to open the Festival at the new Berkshire Music Center. But the year was 1940, and the composer felt, given the war in Europe, that an introspective piece would be more appropriate. The slow setting, which repeats “Alleluia” over and over again, reminds us that “Alleluia” is a word that has many possible interpretations. The weekly Classical WETA 90.9 FM program Choral Showcase, airing each Sunday at 9 p.m., presents Randall Thompson’s Alleluia on the July 5 broadcast — marking the 75th anniversary of the piece, which

premiered July 8, 1940. Completed a year later was Gutzon Borglum’s carving work at Mount Rushmore, and our July 5 program also features a Michael Daugherty piece for chorus and orchestra with a text based on words penned by Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. Leonard Bernstein’s Missa brevis, a short Mass setting for chorus and percussion, also airs July 5. On July 12 at 9 p.m., Choral Showcase presents Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 13, “Babi Yar,” a setting of poems by Russian poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko. Babi-Yar, near Kiev, was the scene of the mass murder of many thousands of Jews by the Nazis in 1941, and Shostakovich’s composition is about suppression of the individual, including anti-Semitism. Our recording is the last in the series of acclaimed recordings of Shostakovich symphonies conducted by Vasily Petrenko.
