PBS NEWSHOUR
nown for providing the most comprehensive primetime television coverage of the national political conventions through many election cycles, the WETA production PBS NewsHour again follows the proceedings at the party conventions with live broadcasts from Cleveland and Philadelphia this month. In a groundbreaking partnership, the NewsHour — public television’s marquee newscast — will combine forces with NPR to co-produce and simulcast coverage of the 2016 Republican National Convention, taking place July 18-21 in Cleveland, and the 2016 Democratic National Convention, July 25-28 in Philadelphia. The partnership between PBS NewsHour and NPR PBS NewsHour co-anchors is a first-time collaboration for the two organizations Judy Woodruff and Gwen Ifill at the conventions. Primetime coverage begins each night at 8 p.m. and is scheduled through 11 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD — and on PBS and NPR member stations nationwide. The broadcasts will be co-anchored on location nightly by Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff at the convention halls in Cleveland and Philadelphia, with Hari Sreenivasan providing additional reporting in Washington. “An election as complicated as this one is among the key reasons audiences rely on the PBS NewsHour,” said Sara Just, PBS NewsHour executive producer. “The experience our co-anchors and managing editors Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff have in covering 20 presidential campaigns between them provides the depth and insight needed in a year like this. This summer, we have an exciting plan to expand our reach and coverage further in ways that we have never done before as we combine forces with NPR to co-produce and simulcast the July political conventions across television, radio and digital. The power of these two news organizations coming together will make for the smartest convention coverage to be found anywhere.” In the convention coverage, NPR host Rachel Martin will report inside the hall with NewsHour’s Lisa Desjardins and John Yang and NPR’s Sue Davis. Ifill and Woodruff will also be joined by NPR’s Mara Liasson, Ron Elving and Domenico Montanaro and NewsHour regular contributors including syndicated columnist Mark Shields, New York Times columnist David Brooks, Cook Political Report’s Amy Walter and others. Gavel-to-gavel coverage will extend online and on social media, to include live streaming of podium speeches and floor interviews. For convention reports online, visit pbs.org/newshour and npr.org. PBS NewsHour & NPR Convention Coverage is part of PBS Election 2016 programming, which will follow the election trail to election night and beyond. The White House: Inside Story new two-hour special presentation spotlights one of America’s most iconic buildings — a symbol of shared national history, and home to the most powerful person on Earth. At the nation’s most famous home, the President charts the course for the country, and the First Family lives in the spotlight. A home, office and museum, a backdrop for command performances and state visits, and the heart of the American body politic, the White House is maintained by more than 100 members of the residence staff and a bevy of curators who manage its collection of antiques and artworks. The White House: Inside Story goes behind the scenes to meet the people who keep the house running smoothly, maintaining the power of the chief executive and guarding the privacy of the First Family. The White House’s most familiar and least known spaces are uncovered, and the program explores how the building and its operations have evolved over the past 200 years, changing with the currents of history and the tastes and concerns of its occupants.

WV PUBLIC BROADCASTING
television documentary from West Virginia Public Broadcasting traces the life and 50-year public service career of John D. Rockefeller IV — “Jay” — and some of the political history of West Virginia, his adopted home. Why did an heir of one of the wealthiest families in America come to one of its poorest states — and stay? What influenced him and who inspired him along his journey to becoming one of the state’s most influential leaders of the last half-century? The film features in-depth interviews with the retired two-term governor and four-term United States Senator and includes conversations with WETA President and C.E.O. Sharon Percy Rockefeller, his spouse. The program explores Senator Rockefeller’s successes and disappointments, his motivation and focus, from his arrival in West Virginia as a social worker battling poverty to his chairmanship of some of the most powerful committees in the U.S. Senate. Produced by award-winning filmmakers Suzanne Higgins and Russ Barbour, Jay: A Rockefeller’s Journey includes in-depth conversations with the Senator’s legislative colleagues, constituents, staff members, historians and journalists. The program repeats July 31 at 1 p.m.

WETA Neighborhoods spotlights Anacostia, Capitol Hill, Dupont Circle and Georgetown
The WETA TV 26 production airs Tuesday, July 5 at 8 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD
A
s our nation’s capital has grown, its neighborhoods have evolved, some undergoing significant change and transition in just the past decade. A new hour-long, locally focused WETA TV 26 production spotlights some of the District’s vibrant, diverse neighborhoods, profiling the people and places at the crossroads of these changes. WETA Neighborhoods explores the rich character of four areas of Greater Washington: Anacostia, Capitol Hill, Dupont Circle and Georgetown. Featuring local voices, the program presents intriguing discoveries awaiting visitors and residents alike in each area: from secret histories to off-the-beaten-path landmarks, to accounts of spies, trailblazers and local heroes, all revealing lesser-known aspects of familiar surroundings.
Think you know your neighborhood? Think again. Just around that familiar corner are surprises waiting to be discovered. — WETA Neighborhoods “There are so many undiscovered places with fascinating backstories in the Washington D.C. area that we have yet to uncover,” notes Kevin Harris, WETA vice president and television station manager. “WETA is pleased to feature these unique neighborhoods and people and continue to explore our region.” In Dupont Circle, the TV 26 film crew visits the Dupont Farmer’s Market, Restaurant Nora and Soupergirl, meeting an organic pioneer and the next generation of the farm-to-table movement — people who influence the way Washingtonians cook and eat. At the Dupont Underground, the film highlights an abandoned streetcar station that has been transformed into an experimental laboratory celebrating the arts. Then, in Georgetown, the program drops in at Martin’s Tavern, a longtime hangout for politicos and students alike; visits Mount Zion United Baptist Church and Cemetery, two landmarks upholding the neighborhood’s connection to the African-American community; and spotlights Rose Park, where long before the Williams sisters, two other sibling tennis phenoms learned the game on O Street, NW, on their
way to distinguished careers on the competition circuit. The film also revisits Georgetown’s clandestine past on unassuming street corners with a former FBI agent and a former KGB officer. In Capitol Hill, WETA Neighborhoods highlights one of the country’s hottest restaurants — committed to staying local and serving members of the community; explores historic alleys, homes and gardens that date back to the early years of Washington D.C.’s development; and stops by the Peter Bug Shoe Repair Academy to meet a community icon who teaches entrepreneurship. Also visited is the once-neglected Congressional Cemetery, now revitalized with the help of neighborhood dog owners. WETA Neighborhoods hears from cast members of a Daytime Emmy-winning web-based soap opera drama that is putting the up-and-coming Anacostia neighborhood on the map. The program also navigates the Anacostia River, which is experiencing a comeback thanks to the efforts of conservation groups and one dedicated photographer, and spotlights a community museum that is inspiring the next generation to participate in the neighborhood’s flourishing arts scene with the help of a local painter and portrait artist. With these stories and more, WETA Neighborhoods goes behind the scenes to highlight the people and places that make Greater Washington notable and unique. Tune in, and visit weta.org/neighborhoods for additional information about the “WETA Neighborhoods” initiative.

ETA reprises Ken Burns’s acclaimed, epic documentary that weaves the stories of Theodore, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, three members of one of the most prominent and influential families in American politics. The seven-part, 14-hour series, a co-production of WETA and Florentine Films, marks the first time their individual stories have been woven into a single narrative. The film premiered in September 2014 and was among the highest rated of Ken Burns’s films. The Roosevelts, written by Geoffrey C. Ward and narrated by Peter Coyote, follows the family’s story for more than a century, from Theodore’s birth in 1858 to Eleanor’s death in 1962. Over the course of those years, the Roosevelts redefined the relationship Americans had with their government and with each other, and redefined, as well, the role of the United States within the wider world. The series encompasses all the history the three Roosevelts helped to make — the creation of National Parks and the digging of the Panama Canal, the New Deal and the defeat of Hitler, and the postwar struggles for civil rights at home and human rights around the world. The film is also an intimate human story about love and betrayal, family, personal courage and the conquest of fear. Funding for The Roosevelts: An Intimate History is provided by Bank of America; the Corporation for Public Broadcasting; PBS; Mr. Jack C. Taylor; The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations; National Endowment for the Humanities; Rosalind P. Walter and members of The Better Angels Society, including Jessica & John Fullerton, The Pfeil Foundation, Joan Wellhouse Newton, Bonnie & Tom McCloskey, and The Golkin Family.

Classical WETA 90.9 FM Dett’s The Ordering of Moses on Choral Showcase in July Sunday, July 3 at 9 p.m.
F
By David Ginder, Morning On-Air Host
LIBRARY OF CONGRESS
or Independence Day weekend, Choral Showcase airs a piece by Robert Nathaniel Dett (1882-1943). He was Canadian-born but spent most of his creative life in the United States, and he’s a rare example of an American classical composer who directly found his inspiration in the music of Antonín Dvorák. (Czech composer Dvorák, hired by Jeannette Thurber to head up her National Conservatory in New York in the early 1890s, said that America’s classical music should Robert Nathaniel Dett find its inspiration in African-American and Native-American music. Across many generations, composers have blossomed — albeit indirectly — from Dvorák’s advice.) Dett, while studying at the Oberlin Conservatory, heard Dvorák’s music, and, realizing its similarities to the spirituals he learned from his grandmother, discovered his compositional voice. He graduated from Oberlin and Eastman, and studied also with Nadia Boulanger, and at Harvard (where he wrote his acclaimed essay, “The Emancipation of Negro Music”). He composed, toured as pianist, conducted choral ensembles, and taught music, including in Hampton, Virginia. Dett’s compositional triumph is The Ordering of Moses — “ordering” referring to divine calling. The piece is an oratorio on the biblical exodus, with text from Exodus and Lamentations, and spirituals. Indeed, the “Go Down, Moses” tune is a recurring motif. The oratorio’s premiere was in Cincinnati in 1937, a “border” town during the previous century (on the free side of the Ohio River with slave state Kentucky on the opposite bank). The 1937 premiere was not without controversy. It was broadcast live nationwide on NBC radio from the Cincinnati May Festival, but, partly into the work, was interrupted with words about a conflict with a “previous commitment.” It’s widely believed that the network received complaints about airing a major piece by a black composer, and that’s why the plug was pulled; we’ll never really know. But, with complete certainly, we know that the premiere was re-created in 2014 by the same groups — the May Festival Chorus and Cincinnati Symphony — to give the New York premiere of the piece at Carnegie Hall. The performance was recorded, it’s been released on CD by Bridge, and it airs on Choral Showcase on July 3 at 9 p.m. Verdi’s Macbeth

iolinists never like to program this piece,” says music commentator and composer Rob Kapilow, referring to Beethoven’s famous Kreutzer sonata, “because it’s one of the most excruciatingly nerve-wracking beginnings. But what comes after that is even more extraordinary.” Extraordinary and revolutionary, as Beethoven blows the roof off convention with his cadenza-like opening for solo violin followed by the piano repeating the theme, but in a minor key. Hear this most popular of Beethoven violin sonatas on Monday night, July 4 at 9 p.m., as Classical WETA 90.9 FM local concert broadcast Front Row Washington presents a Phillips Collection performance with violinist Kristin Lee and pianist Michael Mizrahi. In a nod to July 4th, their program also includes music by Aaron Copland and a celebratory encore based on “Yankee Doodle.” On the July 11 program, celebrated American violinist Rachel Barton Pine takes the stage at Chamber Music at the Barns at Wolf Trap. Along with works by Mendelssohn and Villa-Lobos, she performs a piece she commissioned from Arab-American composer Mohammed Fairouz titled “Native Informant-Sonata for Solo Violin.” In it, Farouz includes the bent notes of the Maqam, or Arabic melodic scale, as a lament for all who lost their lives in the 2011 Tahrir Square protests in Egypt. Perhaps you recall hearing years ago about a 10-year-old prodigy named Claire Huangci who gave a private piano recital at the White House for then-President Bill Clinton. Now a celebrated artist with award-winning CDs on the Berlin Classics label, Ms. Huangci performs Chopin’s C minor Nocturne
