WETA Focus A
mong the many cultural television programs that WETA helps to bring to viewers around the country, A Capitol Fourth remains a perennial audience favorite. The lively annual Independence Day celebration, including the concert and accompanying trademark fireworks, broadcast live from the nation’s capital, has been a WETA tradition for decades. We are proud to collaborate with Capital Concerts on this hometown production that is appreciated by so many. We are excited as well about our other July television offerings, which on WETA TV 26 include entertaining dramas and stunning nature miniseries, and on WETA UK include engaging mysteries, travel experiences and much more. Stay tuned this summer, as the countdown begins to the September premiere of Ken Burns’ and Lynn Novick’s monumental documentary, Vietnam, a WETA co-production with Florentine Films. This incredible film may be Ken and Lynn’s best yet, and we look forward to sharing it with you very soon. Enjoy WETA’s July broadcasts; and thank you for supporting all that we do on behalf of the public in Greater Washington and beyond.

n a decades-long tradition, WETA and Capital Concerts again bring to a nationwide audience the annual Independence Day celebration A Capitol Fourth, broadcast live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol on July 4. Emmy Award-nominated actor John Stamos hosts the show, the 37th annual edition of the concert and fireworks extravaganza. This year, featured performers include soul men Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi of The Blues Brothers; iconic musical artists The Beach Boys, with John Stamos (drums) and Sugar Ray’s Mark McGrath (vocals) as special guests; legendary Motown stars The Four Tops; The Voice Season 12 winner Chris Blue; and Tony-nominated Broadway star Phillipa Soo (Hamilton) — with the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of pops conductor Jack Everly. Actress and singer Sofia Carson will open the show with a special performance of the “National Anthem,” and country music star Trace Adkins will offer a tribute to America’s men and women in uniform, performing his song “Still a Soldier.” The program features 20 cameras positioned around the city to capture the fireworks display. Capping off the show will be the traditional rousing rendition of Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” complete with live cannon fire provided by the United States Army Presidential Salute Battery. A Capitol Fourth is made possible by grants from The Boeing Company, the National Park Service, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Department of the Army, PBS, and public television stations nationwide. Air travel is provided by American Airlines.

July Drama on WETA TV 26/HD Endeavour, Series 3 on Masterpiece ETA reprises Endeavour, Series 3 on Masterpiece, starring Shaun Evans as crime novelist Colin Dexter’s character Endeavour Morse in the early years of his career, before his signature red Jaguar but with his deductive powers already running in high gear. In four films set in the mid-1960s, Endeavour must deal with the aftermath of the tragic events in Series 2 that left him languishing in prison, and his senior officer DI Fred Thursday (Roger Allam) with a life-threatening injury. In Ride (July 6), Morse investigates a bus conductor’s murder while brooding over his suspension from duty. In Arcadia (July 13), he investigates a house fire and a tummy bug decimating the police force. Prey (July 20) focuses on the case of a missing au pair. In Coda, Morse is occupied with unexpected strife in his personal life, the murder of a man in the fashion world, and a decision about his own future on the force. WETA TV 26 premieres a new set of episodes, Endeavour, Series 4, in August.

fter Endeavour each Thursday, a gripping four-part mystery series set in small-town New Zealand follows the community’s newest resident, experienced but down-to-earth police detective Mike Shepherd, as he finds that murder lurks in even the most homely location. In Brokenwood, memories — and animosities — run deep. Neill Rea (Legend of the Seeker) stars in the lead role of DI Shepherd, a cop with a 1971 “classic” car, a collection of country music cassettes, and an indeterminate number of ex-wives. Fern Sutherland plays the new woman in Shepherd’s life, his assistant: meticulous, ambitious Detective Constable Kristin Sims. She is a by-the-book investigator nearly 20 years younger than her boss’s car, and she must get used to Shepherd’s lone-wolf ways. The series features a country music soundtrack featuring some of New Zealand’s most popular musicians.

BBC/SCOTT ALEXANDER
new three-part nature miniseries follows three groups of animals — elephants, caribou and zebra — as they face the immense challenges of migration in places around the world. Captured in real-time, using the latest satellite-tracking and filming technology, the program gives unparalleled access to the great obstacles facing each herd, from treacherous terrain to merciless predators, as they risk danger and death in a race for their lives. In breathtaking spectacles spanning southern and eastern Africa, Canada and Alaska, the documentary gives a front-row seat to the ultimate test of survival for each of these animal groups, following their journeys. Nature’s Great Race features Elephants (July 12), following the annual gathering of a thousand threatened elephants in northern Kenya. Caribou (July 19) joins 100,000 caribou on the world’s longest land migration: 3,000 miles through Arctic wilderness. Zebra (July 26) witnesses the perilous journey of thousands of zebras through a brutal Botswana wilderness.

©2016 JOEL SARTORE PHOTOGRAPHY INC.
new series follows author, conservationist and renowned National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore as he travels the globe to create the Photo Ark, documenting every species at risk of extinction. The Photo Ark is a digital “collection” of the world’s mammals, fish, amphibians, birds, reptiles and insects. The three-part series follows Sartore as he documents threatened species at zoos, in nature preserves, and in the wild. Throughout the programs, scientists and naturalists reveal why ensuring the future of these animals is so critical. Sartore has traveled to nearly 40 countries to photograph 6,395 species for the Photo Ark to date. When complete, the Ark will be one of the most comprehensive records of the world’s biodiversity. Most days, Sartore has the best job in the world: in the first program, prankish semi-habituated lemurs playfully crawl over him at Madagascar’s Lemur Island rehab center, during one of his easiest photography shoots. Others are more challenging, and Sartore knows he is in a race against time; some species are disappearing before he can get to them. Rare: Creatures of the Photo Ark is made possible with funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, The Kendeda Fund, the Candis J. Stern Foundation and public television viewers.

July 23, 26 & 30 at 8 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD
roadcasting live over three nights, PBS, in partnership with the BBC, turns the cameras on an extraordinary natural spectacle playing out across the vast Alaskan wilderness, where some of the world’s most remarkable animals — bears, wolves, moose, orcas and eagles — gather by the thousands to take part in Alaska’s summer feast. Premiering Sunday, July 23, Wild Alaska Live is hosted by Emmy Award-winning zoologists, adventurers and brothers Chris and Martin Kratt. Liz Bonnin and Steve Backshall, who presented the 2015 live event Big Blue Live, will join the Kratts as on-air correspondents. With some of largest areas of wilderness left on Earth, Alaska is the best place in the world to see these animals in all their glory. The three-night live presentation also explores the challenges of preserving America’s last frontier. The broadcasts visit points near Juneau and the Tongass National Forest, the vast Kenai Fjords National Park; and the wilderness of Katmai National Park. 2 JULY 2017

July 24, 26 & 28 at 8 a.m. on the WETA Kids channel and 7:30 a.m. on WETA TV 26
opular children’s series Wild Kratts, created for 6- to 8-year-olds, presents age-appropriate science concepts via animal adventures. The program stars — and is created and produced by — Emmy Award-winning zoologists, adventurers and brothers Chris Kratt and Martin Kratt, who appear as animated versions of themselves alongside the Wild Kratts gang (Aviva, Koki, and Jimmy) to allow them to visit wild animals in their habitats and showcase key science concepts along the way. This month, a special hour-long Wild Kratts film — Hero’s Journey — spotlights the epic journey of sockeye salmon as they travel from the ocean back to the Alaska streams where they were born. In the program, while creature adventuring in Alaska, one of Aviva’s breakthrough inventions falls overboard and attaches to a sockeye salmon — jump-starting a wild chase upriver through the wilderness. The Wild Kratts track the salmon run, a quest fraught with obstacles and intriguing creature connections on the way. The special also spotlights how interconnected animals can be with an ecosystem.

Nature’s Miracle Orphans, Series II
A
BBC wildlife series follows the work of animal rescue centers around the world and meets the extraordinary people who help many varieties of wild orphans get back on their feet. Over the last few years there have been huge leaps in our understanding of how to rescue and rehabilitate orphaned wildlife. Sometimes the only way to learn techniques to help raise and rehabilitate wild orphans is through trial and error; and these endeavors create an emotional rollercoaster for the human caretakers dedicated to saving vulnerable animals. Nature’s Miracle Orphans follows the different stages of caring for these little creatures; from rescue to skills training to — ultimately, hopefully — release back into the wild. Series II spotlights elephants, aardvarks, big cats, rhinos, tapirs, monkeys and more.
