WETA Focus W

e at WETA are proud to serve Greater Washington with locally focused television productions that are created exclusively for our community and illuminate the people, places and stories of the national capital area. This month, we are delighted to premiere our new WETA TV 26 documentary film, Washington in the ’90s — the latest production in our popular “Decades” local history series. The 1990s were a time of tremendous transformation in Washington, D.C., and this engaging film explores the political, social and cultural currents of the era in addition to the remarkable revitalization of the downtown area and its impact on the city. July also brings an Independence Day tradition and audience favorite, the broadcast of A Capitol Fourth live from the grounds of the U.S. Capitol and the National Mall. We have been very pleased to partner with Capital Concerts for decades to present this lively annual music and fireworks extravaganza to a nationwide audience; this year’s exciting lineup of performers will provide great entertainment. In other offerings, enjoy the summer season of mystery dramas, from Endeavour on Masterpiece and a new season of crime thriller The Tunnel to episodes of Maigret and Midsomer Murders. Our broadcasts also include journeys of discovery, visiting great mountain ranges and extreme environments around the globe, and closer to home, surveying culinary diversity in America’s cities and spotlighting the nation’s great monuments, engineering marvels and byways. Enjoy our July programming, and thank you for your support.

new WETA history documentary, Washington in the ’90s, spotlights a fascinating decade of enormous transformation in the nation’s capital. The 1990s were a time of transition in the city that included a revitalization of the downtown landscape and dramatic social, cultural and technological change. WETA TV 26 examines these currents and the stories of Washington at the end of the 20th century in the engaging new 60-minute film. Through archival footage and original interviews, the program journeys through the decade, exploring how Washington, D.C. moved from a city in crisis to a city of opportunity. Doreen Gentzler, longtime news anchor at NBC4, narrates the documentary. Washington in the ’90s is the latest production in a series of local history films created by WETA TV 26, chronicling seminal events in Greater Washington by decade as part of WETA’s mission to produce television in service to the community. “I am so pleased to present this latest installment in our popular ‘Decades’ series, showcasing key moments in Washington D.C.’s history,” said Kevin Harris, WETA Vice President and Television Station Manager. “The 1990s were a pivotal period for the region, a time when the scars of the turbulent ’80s gave way to sweeping changes that transformed Washington into the thriving capital it is today.” Among the film’s themes are longtime Washington Mayor Sharon Pratt mayor Marion Barry’s shocking fall from power and the remarkable revival of his political career; social unrest and activism as the city’s demographic make-up shifted; the elections of mayors Sharon Pratt and Anthony Williams; the downtown area’s revitalization, anchored by longtime local sports team owner Abe Pollin’s construction of the MCI Center; and a new wave of gentrification. Also in the spotlight are the rise of the alternative rock scene in D.C.; the region’s emergence as a technology hub during the early internet era; and the Washington Redskins’ earlydecade success and challenging years that followed. The new film presents a wealth of perspectives via interviews with local residents. Notable Washingtonians featured include former mayors Sharon Pratt and Anthony Williams; journalists Million Man March Cokie Roberts, Pat Lawson Muse and Tom Sherwood; Washington Redskins legends Darrell Green and Joe Jacoby; America Online founder Steve Case; music club owners Dante Ferrando and Seth Hurwitz; Washington Wizards and Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis; and former first lady of Washington, D.C. new, second season of the miniseries Earth’s Natural Wonders, titled Life at the Extremes, explores how humans survive through ingenuity and resilience in extraordinary natural places that pose great challenges to life. The three-part film visits some of the most extreme places to live on the planet. Surviving the Extreme (July 11) examines how — in locations from soaring mountains, deep jungles, frozen polar worlds and beyond (such as Siberia, at right) — human beings need bravery and ingenuity to survive. Surviving with Animals (July 18) examines how wildlife holds the key to survival for the people who live in some extreme environments. The final program, Surviving Against the Odds (July 25), spotlights how in some environments, people must push themselves to the absolute limit to stay alive.

he award-winning British crime thriller The Tunnel returns for a third and final season, reuniting Stephen Dillane (Game of Thrones) in his International Emmy Award-winning role as British detective Karl Roebuck with Clémence Poésy (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) as French detective Elise Wassermann. In the new six-part series, the pair takes on a toxic and terrifying criminal duo whose mutual defining quality is an existential death wish. When the question posed by the couple — what is a life worth? — is directed at Karl, he is forced to confront an impossible, haunting choice. Set amid Brexit hysteria, Series 3 tackles an escalating refugee crisis and examines the increasing threat of terror occasioned by disenfranchised, exiled souls on whom society has turned its back. owan Atkinson returns as bestselling novelist George Simenon’s French detective Jules Maigret in two 2017 adaptations airing back to back on July 5 on the heels of Series 1 in June. The drama returns to the war-damaged streets of 1950s Paris for two cases. In Night at the Crossroads, Maigret interrogates suspected murderer Carl Andersen for hours. But despite his best efforts, Andersen’s story never slips — he insists he’s innocent. So why was the body of a diamond dealer found on his property, in his car, killed with his gun? And why did he and his mysterious sister Else try to run away? In Maigret in Montmartre, Arlette, a stripper in one of the area’s seedy nightclubs, reports a conversation she overheard about an imminent murder, but her story is not taken seriously until tragedy strikes, and Maigret is called upon to find a killer.

In Series 3, with her investigation agency well established, her skills are sought by local clients, including policeman DCI Adams (John Graham Davies), who calls upon Hetty to help in those sensitive cases that need her gentle touch. Aiding her are husband Robert (Derek Benfield) and assistant Geoffrey Shawcross (Dominic Monaghan).

he turn-of-the-millennium comedy-drama Cold Feet was an enormous hit, winning awards as it followed — through five seasons — three 30-something couples experiencing the ups-and-downs of love and life in Manchester, England. Now, in a 2016 revival from the original writer, characters Adam, Pete, Jenny, Karen and David return in Series 6. James Nesbitt, John Thompson, Robert Bathurst, and Fay Ripley are among the cast. The character Adam has won Tina’s heart, the question is, can he keep it? Pete has come a long way since teetering on the edge and his new outlook on life has given Jenny the chance to embrace hers, but at what cost? On the surface Karen appears to have it all and the gang are envious of her as she launches her new publishing house. Meanwhile David has been reduced to going door-to-door selling insurance to unsuspecting pensioners. Can he find a better way to make ends meet? Laced with comedy and tragedy, the series observes and tackles the big stories and daily minutiae of life.

The Coroner, Series 1

Mondays at 9 p.m. starting July 16 on WETA UK

ETA UK reprises the 10-part BBC mystery series The Coroner, from the same production team that creates Father Brown. Claire Goose starts as big-city lawyer Jane Kennedy, who returns to her South Devon hometown to take a job as coroner and investigate crimes in the beautiful seaside region. She finds herself working alongside her childhood sweetheart Davey Higgins (Matt Bardock) — now the local detective sergeant for the South Dart Police — to probe the sudden or unexplained deaths of residents and tourists alike. As the series follows its cases, running alongside each mystery is the warmhearted ebb and flow of Jane’s relationships with colleagues, family and the local community.

BBC

W

comedy series follows the misadventures of six socially isolated, homeschooled siblings and their acerbic, highly capable mother Della (Rebekah Station of Wallander). Eldest sibling Germaine, 16, is idiosyncratic, distressingly over-sharey and deludedly in love. Aretha, 15, an introverted, sarcastic George Orwell admirer, just wants to be left alone to endure her adolescence. Yoko, 13, is a dreamy aspiring paleontologist with a heavy dose of “the Force.” Along with Wyatt (6), Mariah (5) and toddler Cher, the family also share their small home with Della’s feckless, hallucinogen-casualty dad, Grampy (Philip Jackson of Poirot). The sitcom is based on the experience of sisters Caitlin and Caroline Moran — the show’s writers — growing up in Wolverhampton.

WETA UK July Highlights Grantchester, Series 1 on Masterpiece

Fridays at 9 p.m. starting July 27 on WETA UK

W

ETA UK presents Season 1 of popular Masterpiece Mystery! series Grantchester, which stars James Norton as Sidney Chambers, a charismatic young vicar and former Scots Guards officer who turns amateur investigator in his parish — to which he offers spiritual comfort and support. Aiding Chambers in his inquiries in the beautiful Cambridgeshire hamlet of Grantchester is gruff, down-to-earth, overworked police inspector Geordie Keating (Robson Green, of Reckless). Set in 1953, the mysteries are based on the novels of James Runcie. In the first of the six episodes of Series 1, Grantchester residents are in shock following the death of a villager in what is presumed to be suicide. After speaking to villagers, Sidney finds the circumstances suspicious and sets about delving deeper to discover the truth. It transpires that Sidney’s more intuitive techniques of coaxing information from witnesses and suspects well complements Geordie’s methodical approach to policing — and a new detective team is born.

The Wild West

A Sundays at 10 p.m. starting July 1 on WETA UK

BBC

three-part Western docudrama series explores tales of the American frontier, spotlighting iconic historical figures General George Custer, Billy the Kid and Wyatt Earp to offer a reevaluation of what we know about these men. The era of the Wild West has proved a fertile ground for the growth of stories of heroism and triumph over adversity, but what is the truth behind the legends? Blending fast-paced drama with archaeological, forensic and ballistic research, this series brings the three men’s stories to life. Custer’s Last Stand, with Toby Stephens (right), presents a radical new picture of Custer’s famous battle against Sioux warriors at the Little Bighorn in 1876. The episode Billy the Kid, with David Leon, draws from original letters written by Billy himself and from official government records to offer a surprising take on the life of outlaw and killer William Bonney. The Gunfight at the OK Corral, with Liam Cunningham, chronicles lawman Earp’s famous shootout and examines how he was initially seen as a villain, not a hero, and how his time in court on trial may have saved his life.

n acclaimed crime drama stars Douglas Henshall in a BAFTA Scotland Awardwinning role as Detective Inspector Jimmy Perez, who investigates cases in Scotland’s Shetland Islands archipelago. As the drama opens, the native Shetlander has recently returned to the islands with his 14-year-old step-daughter, Cassie. The stories are based on novels by celebrated British crime writer Ann Cleeves, whose “Vera Stanhope” novels, dramatized as the TV detective series Vera, also air on WETA UK (Thursdays, 10 p.m.). The first of four Shetland series is a two-part story based on the Cleeves novel Red Bones. In the case, an elderly islander is found murdered on an archaeological site on the grounds of her small farm and, to find the killer, Perez and his team must unravel the family feuds and secrets that emerge. Series 2 follows, featuring six cases based on Cleeves’ novels Raven Black, Dead Water and Blue Lightning.

Also this month: Death in Paradise, Series 5 airs Fridays at 8 p.m.; Vera continues Thursdays at 10 p.m.; Hetty Wainthropp Investigates continues on Saturdays at 8 p.m., entering Series 3; The Blue Planet and Life continue on Sundays at 8 and 9 p.m., respectively; Hinterland continues Saturdays at 10 p.m., entering Series 2 on July 14; and Silent Witness, Series 1 airs Mondays at 10 p.m. starting July 30.

Classical WETA 90.9 FM NSO Showcase Celebrates Christoph Eschenbach Wednesday, July 4 at 9 p.m. By Nicole Lacroix, Afternoon On-Air Host

SCOTT SUCHMAN

ast June, Maestro Christoph Eschenbach, in his final concert as National Symphony Orchestra music director, said farewell to Washington audiences with a splendid performance of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. It was a fitting choice for an artist devoted to celebrating the masterpieces of the German repertoire. Washington Post music critic Anne Midgette commented that Maestro Eschenbach’s interpretations can often make us hear a piece in a fresh way, discovering hidden parts and new joys. She wrote, “His pacing seemed just right...flowing seamlessly into the moment when the bass Soloman National Symphony Orchestra Howard rose and declaimed O Freunde in a voice as rich and stirring as the Conductor Laureate music demands.” Howard (unforgettable as Fafner in Washington National Christoph Eschenbach Opera’s Ring) was joined by soloists Joseph Kaiser, J’nai Bridges and Leah Crocetto (featured this season as Elisabetta in Don Carlo and as soprano soloist in Verdi’s Requiem). The Choral Arts Society’s performance in the choral finale garnered special praise from The Post: “...singing their whole section from memory, slightly swaying to the music, [they] joined soloists and orchestra in a kind of wild ecstatic bacchanal while Eschenbach danced and swept his arms on the podium. Your magic reunites things that today’s dictates try to keep apart, run the words of Schiller’s poem [on which the fourth movement is based]. There isn’t always unity in music, but [here] there was, in the roar of applause that flooded into the tingling silence when the piece was over.” This June, Maestro Eschenbach returned to the Kennedy Center as NSO conductor laureate, to lead this season’s final concerts — three programs in which he explored pieces he has never before conducted with the NSO, while also renewing his popular practice of allowing the Orchestra’s principals to shine as soloists. Preceding Beethoven’s 9th, the July broadcast of NSO Showcase will open with another audience favorite, Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings, recorded in February 2017. Join us for this special season-ending edition of NSO Showcase, July 4 at 9 p.m. on Classical WETA 90.9 FM.
