half-century ago this month, on July 20, the world looked to the stars — and to television — as the Apollo 11 mission made history, landing two Americans on the moon. That extraordinary “giant leap for mankind” continues to capture the imagination, and this month WETA presents an engaging array of programming celebrating the moon mission, exploring our solar system, and looking to the future of space endeavors. Anchoring the wide slate of offerings is the three-part series Chasing the Moon: American Experience, chronicling the Space Race, complemented by intriguing NOVA offerings, additional miniseries and more. Elsewhere in July WETA broadcasts, you will notice a new addition to the WETA UK channel — BBC World News. In late May, we at WETA were proud to announce a new collaboration with BBC to distribute its world news broadcasts to public television stations around the United States. As home to public television’s marquee newscast, PBS NewsHour, WETA is the perfect partner to help bring BBC’s respected international news coverage to American audiences nationwide as well. We are delighted to present BBC World News in the 11 p.m. hour each weeknight on WETA UK. You can also enjoy BBC news reports on WETA TV 26/HD, where they have long aired each weekday at 6 p.m. Among our many other television offerings this month, enjoy a new season of Grantchester on Masterpiece, and on July 4 tune in to the traditional Independence Day concert and celebration A Capitol Fourth, a WETA co-production broadcast live to the nation from the grounds of the U.S. Capitol. Thank you for your support.

n five new episodes of Masterpiece mystery drama Grantchester (Series 4), it’s now 1956. The post-war rulebook is being torn up — and there’s change at the vicarage. Sleuthing reverend Sidney Chambers (James Norton) is feeling adrift. He needs a little danger in his life, which is exactly what he gets when American civil rights activist Violet Todd arrives in the city and fires up his need for social justice. Soon enough, there’s a new Vicar of Grantchester: firebrand Will Davenport (Tom Brittney, Outlander, Call the Midwife). Idealistic and energetic, Will is a man of the people; he rides into the village on a motorcycle, listens to rock ’n’ roll and encourages the congregation to call him by his first name, all of which leaves some elders appalled. And while Will embraces the future, Inspector Geordie Keating (Robson Green) is entirely baffled by it: his wife is suddenly cold and distant, he can’t find anything in the new police station where he must share an office with a new colleague, and he senses that fellow officers may view him as a throwback. Throughout all of this upheaval, one constant remains: there is injustice in the world, and Geordie knows that sometimes a vicar can be a detective’s best friend. Funding for Masterpiece is provided by Viking with additional support from public television viewers and contributors to The Masterpiece Trust.

BBC mystery series stars comedian-actor Alan Davies as an illusionist who devises spectacular stage stunts for a magician — and on the side employs his skills to crack seemingly impossible crimes. In the drama’s fourth season, Creek is assisted, and frequently hindered, by his ex-girlfriend and old sparring partner Carla Borrego, portrayed by Julia Sawalha (Absolutely Fabulous, Lark Rise to Candleford). Borrego is a determined amateur sleuth who has no intention of playing second fiddle to Creek. The pair tackles the case of a policewoman strangled to death inside an empty gym, the mystery of a girl whose hair was seemingly shorn by a kidnapper, and more. Jonathan Creek airs in double features on three Mondays in July.

renda Blethyn stars as obsessive, calculating Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope in a new 2019 season of the acclaimed crime drama based on novels by English crime writer Ann Cleeves. The four 90-minute episodes follow the disheveled sleuth in fictional Northumberland as she probes murder cases. In Blind Spot, Vera follows the trail of a murdered trainee forensic psychologist. In Cuckoo, a teenage boy is found murdered in a coastal town far from home. In Cold River, the life of a woman found dead in the River Tyne presents a complex mystery. And in The Seagull, Vera opens up a cold case after the discovery of a skeleton. Kenny Doughty co-stars as Stanhope’s investigative partner, Detective Sergeant Aiden Healy.

Chasing the Moon: American Experience
Mon-Wed, July 8-10 at 9 p.m., repeating nightly and throughout the month on WETA TV 26/HD
C
elebrating the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, a new three-part American Experience series explores the era of the Space Race from its earliest beginnings to the monumental achievement of the first lunar landing on July 20, 1969, and beyond. Written, produced and directed by Academy Awardnominee Robert Stone, a longtime contributor to the American history series, Chasing the Moon upends much of the conventional mythology surrounding the effort. The six-hour series spotlights the Space Age as a fascinating stew of scientific innovation and PR savvy, political calculation and media spectacle, visionary impulses and personal drama. With no narration and using only archival footage — including previously lost or overlooked material — the film features new interviews with a diverse cast of characters who played key roles in these historic events. Among those included are astronauts Buzz Aldrin, Frank Borman and Bill Anders; Freeman Dyson, the renowned futurist and theoretical physicist; Sergei Khrushchev (the son of former Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev), who played a prominent role in the Soviet space program as a rocket engineer; Poppy Northcutt, the first woman to serve in NASA’s Mission Control; and Ed Dwight, America’s first black astronaut. Major funding for American Experience provided by Liberty Mutual Insurance, Consumer Cellular and by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Major funding for Chasing the Moon provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and by the National Endowment for the Humanities: Exploring the Human Endeavor. Additional funding for Chasing the Moon provided by The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations: Strengthening America’s Future Through Education. Additional funding for American Experience provided by the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation, The Documentary Investment Group: Ira and Diana Riklis, and public television viewers.
8 Days: To the Moon and Back
A
new BBC documentary co-produced with PBS, 8 Days: To the Moon and Back, chronicles the Apollo 11 crew’s eight-day, three-hour, 18-minute mission to the moon in July 1969. To bring the adventure to life 50 years later, the film blends recently declassified mission audio — featuring conversations between astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins inside the spacecraft on their historic journey — with newly shot studio footage, NASA and news archive footage, and CGI, recreating the voyage and moon landing. The program follows the mission from launch to splashdown and features reenactments with Rufus Wright (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) as Armstrong, Jack Tarlton (The Imitation Game) as Aldrin and Patrick Kennedy as Collins.

new, five-part NOVA miniseries tells the story of our solar system through the eyes of the latest and most daring space missions ever mounted. The co-production of PBS and BBC brings the eight worlds that populate our solar system vividly to life, combining detailed imagery, planetary science research, and remarkable footage captured by orbiters, landers and rovers to piece together the history of each planet. Using special effects, the series offers an up-close look at these faraway planets, capturing awe-inspiring sights from haunting landscapes (volcanoes three times higher than Mt. Everest), to colossal weather systems (cyclones larger than Earth, lasting centuries), to strange environments of fantastic scale and beauty (including Saturn’s 175,000-mile-wide rings). National corporate funding for NOVA is provided by Draper. Major funding for NOVA is provided by the David H. Koch Fund for Science, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and PBS viewers.

BBC World News
tarting July 1, WETA UK presents BBC World News each weeknight in the 11 p.m. hour — see the WETA UK program grid on page 13 for timings. The program presents the day’s top global news from the largest news broadcaster in the world. Newscasts feature up-to-date reports on the news of the day, in addition to business reports, world sports news, interviews and analysis.
The Coroner, Series 1
A
10-part BBC crime drama, The Coroner — starring Claire Goose (Waking the Dead) and Matt Bardock — follows the investigations of big-city lawyer Jane Kennedy, who takes a job as coroner in her old home town on the beautiful Devon coast. There she probes sudden or unexplained deaths of residents and tourists alongside her childhood sweetheart, Davey Higgins, now a detective sergeant for the local South Dart Police. The pair’s old chemistry remains evident as they collaborate in finding answers to puzzling cases. In her work, Jane’s empathy and sharp instincts lead her to the secrets and complicated relationships behind each death. The series, from the production team that created Father Brown, features a new mystery in each episode, and running alongside each mystery is the warmhearted ebb and flow of Jane’s relationships with colleagues, family and the local community.

The Body Farm, Series 1 Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on WETA UK
n the high-tech crime thriller The Body Farm, a spin-off from the series Waking the Dead, forensic pathologist Dr. Eve Lockhart (Tara Fitzgerald) returns with a new team of scientists to unlock clues to murders and track down suspects. The investigative group works in a private lab, the Body Farm, where the boundaries of experimental forensic research are pushed to the limit. As the series opens, when called on by the police to help solve a series of grisly murders, Lockhart — the head of the operation and heart of the team — sees an opportunity to both pay the bills and expand the horizons of her work. Alongside hardened homicide detective DI Craig Hale (Keith Allen, Trainspotting and Robin Hood), she brings her experience with criminal cases to bear and her team works to catch a killer. Soon drawn into their world, Hale finds that the lab’s techniques are absolutely vital to his police work.

n Season 5 of BBC mystery series Death in Paradise, police detective Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall, My Family and Love Actually) is settled in on the beautiful (fictitious) Caribbean island of Saint Marie, but he can’t help feeling that something‘s missing from his life. When he decides that buying a boat is the answer to his problems, a colleague correctly diagnoses a mid-life crisis — the root of Humphrey’s malaise is his lack of a love life. Confident that there’s a formula to finding love, Humphrey enlists the help of DS Florence Cassell (Joséphine Jobert), only to discover the complexities of dating are more confusing than any of his criminal cases. Humphrey’s deductive powers may not be much use on the singles scene but, back on the job, with a new team in place, his considerable intellect and experience help him face perplexing murders that include a poisoning in which Commissioner Patterson is implicated.

Shakespeare and Hathaway: Private Investigators, Series 2 — New!
n a new 10-part season of the quirky crime drama from the production team that created Father Brown, The Coroner and Land Girls, Jo Joyner and Mark Benton return as unlikely private detective duo Lu Shakespeare and Frank Hathaway. Frank is a talented and decidedly grumpy detective with great gut instincts. Lu is an ex-hairdresser with wonderful charm and a keen sense of danger. The pair investigates misdeeds in Stratford-Upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare, where the streets are picturesque, thronging with tourists — and as well with cunning criminals, tricksters and fraudsters. The local tennis club, for example, is a picture of middle-class good manners, yet foul play festers behind the scenes. A pedigreed pooch disappears overnight and the personal trainer and stylist emerge as suspects. Fraud, extortion, vice, identity theft, and corruption all lurk beneath the surface of the lovely community.

Shetland, Series 1 & 2
Mondays at 9 p.m. starting July 15 on WETA UK
ETA UK reprises the first seasons of the celebrated BBC crime drama Shetland, starring Douglas Henshall (Primeval, Collision) in a BAFTA Scotland-winning role as Detective Inspector Jimmy Perez, who investigates cases in the Shetland Islands archipelago. As the drama opens, the native Shetlander has recently returned to the islands with his 14-year-old step-daughter, Cassie. The stories are based on novels by celebrated English crime writer Ann Cleeves, whose Vera Stanhope novels are dramatized as the television detective series Vera (which also airs on WETA UK). The first Shetland series, a two-part story based on the novel “Red Bones,” airs July 15 and 22. Series 2 begins July 29.
The Brokenwood Mysteries, Series 2 Thursdays at 10 p.m. starting July 18 on WETA UK
n the New Zealand mysteries series, after transferring from a big city to the seemingly quiet small town of Brokenwood, Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Shepherd (Neill Rea) has settled into the relaxed rhythms of country life. The experienced, loner cop has a 1971 “classic” car, a collection of country music cassettes, and an indeterminate number of ex-wives. His methodical assistant, Detective Kristin Sims (Fern Sutherland) — a by-the-book investigator nearly 20 years younger than her boss’s car — has adapted to Shepherd’s unconventional ways, even tolerating his music and his vehicle. Despite the growing accord between the mismatched pair, all is not well in Brokenwood, where memories and animosities run deep and passions simmer beneath the sleepy surface. Shepherd and Sims investigate four cases in Series 2.

Classical WETA 90.9 FM Music for Summer on Choral Showcase Sundays at 9 p.m.
By Bill Bukowski, Midday On-Air Host
S
MARCO BORGGREVE
ummertime is here, and Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s Choral Showcase presents summery music this month, beginning July 7 with Herbert Howells’s The Summer is Coming, written in memory of Arnold Bax, whose own bold, chromatic music is represented by Enchanted Summer, an early work based on Shelley’s Prometheus Unbound. Also on the bill is music by Edward Elgar. He and his wife Alice spent Stile Antico their summer vacations in Bavaria in 1893 and 1894, enjoying the local music and culture (and in Munich, several operas by Wagner). Alice wrote six poems inspired by the places they visited; her husband set them to music in Scenes from the Bavarian Highlands. On July 14, Divine Theatre presents the ensemble Stile Antico (above) performing music of Giaches de Wert, a 16th-century madrigalist who turned his flair for dramatic song into a series of motets based on scenes from the New Testament. His music strongly influenced Claudio Monteverdi, whose own set of sacred madrigals and motets, Selva morale e spirituale, “The Moral and Spiritual Forest,” was likewise designed less for the church than for the theater. Psalm settings by Mozart, Bruckner, Charles Ives, Lily Boulanger, Vaughan Williams and Virgil Thomson are highlighted with performances conducted by Joseph Flummerfelt, who passed away last March. On the July 21 broadcast, we present a recording of Verdi’s Requiem from a 2017 St Petersburg concert honoring the late baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky. The performance features the Bolshoi Theater Chorus, soloists, and the St Petersburg Philharmonic under Yuri Temirkanov. Next, there’s music by Josquin and Bruckner on July 28, with a new recording of Josquin de Prez’s Missa L’ami Baudichon, followed by Bruckner’s Mass No. 2 in e minor. This Bruckner mass, the second of three, was designed for the reduced forces of choristers and winds. Spend your summer Sunday evenings with great choral music at 9 p.m. on Choral Showcase.
Wednesday, July 3 at 9 p.m.
“A
By Nicole Lacroix, Afternoon On-Air Host
lice Sara Ott,” wrote The Washington Post, reviewing her performance of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1 with the National Symphony Orchestra, “offered a lot of sleek polish...Everything about her was beautiful and elegant and of a piece, from her look (a sparkly column of an evening dress, and no shoes) to the fluidity of her runs up the keyboard. She certainly has technique to burn and the audience greeted her with a long and insistent ovation.” July’s NSO Showcase broadcast features that exciting performance with the German-Japanese pianist — led by renowned Dutch conductor Edo de Waart. Tchaikovsky’s first Piano Concerto, so beloved today, had a famously shaky start. When the young composer shared the manuscript with his friend and mentor at the Moscow Conservatory, the professor’s reaction was disastrous. He called the work “worthless, unplayable, bad, trivial and vulgar.” Fortunately, the eminent pianist and conductor Hans von Bülow had the opposite reaction, and promptly showcased the concerto on his American tour, where it premiered in Boston to great acclaim. Also on the July program, Gianandrea Noseda leads the orchestra in Gustav Mahler’s First Symphony, nicknamed the “Titan” after a popular novel. Mahler once told the composer Jean Sibelius that “a symphony must be like the world, it must embrace everything.” The First Symphony does indeed encompass Mahler’s world, from his reverence for nature, to the sounds he hears on the street, and even to a weird transcription of the folk song Frère Jacques. And nothing compares for excitement to the grand finale. As The Post put it: “the whole horn section stood up in a golden wall, their tone audibly led by the golden sound of [NSO] principal Abel Pereira.” Don’t miss this concert of titanic firsts — Tchaikovsky’s first Piano Concerto and Mahler’s First Symphony — on the last concert of the NSO Showcase 2018-2019 season on Classical WETA 90.9 FM. As Maestro Noseda says, “it’s a fantastic journey.” The broadcast returns this fall. ©ESTHER HAASE

Classical for Washington Guitar, Piano and More on Front Row Washington Mondays at 9 p.m.

COURTESY THE ARTISTS
njoy an engaging variety of concerts this month on Classical WETA’s Carlos Barbosa-Lima and Monday evening program, Front Row Washington. On the July 1 program, we Larry Del Casale present the Várjon-Baráti-Várdai Trio’s Phillips Collection Concert, featuring major piano trios by Beethoven, Dvořák and Brahms. We get into the sounds of summer on July 8 as we listen to a concert by Brazilian guitarist Carlos Barbosa-Lima at the John E. Marlow Guitar Series. He performs a wide range of music from over a dozen composers such as Laurindo Almeida, Ary Barroso and Ruben Fuentes (his famed La Bikina!). Joining him in the second half of his concert is guitarist Larry Del Casale. Together they play music arranged for two guitars, including works by American composers George Gershwin and Mason Williams. The guitarists’ final selection is so exciting, the audience cheers halfway through. Our July 15 program features a piano concert dedicated to one composer, Claude Debussy, from the Phillips Collection. The Washington Post says “No one should have Cambini-Paris Quartet any doubts about the virtuosity of Jean-Efflam Bavouzet.” That is especially true with his performances (and recordings) of Debussy works. We’ll hear some of that composer’s most recognizable music, such as La fille au cheveux de lin, and more than a dozen preludes that also evoke summer, La terrasse des audiences du clair de lune (Terrace of Moonlit Audiences) and Feux d’artifice (Fireworks). Next, we’ll enjoy the Cambini-Paris Quartet’s concert on July 22 from the Phillips Collection. The ensemble performs music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Hyacinth Jadin and Felicien David. Mozart’s String Quartet No. 19 (“Dissonant”) starts with a striking dissonance that on first listen, makes you question if you really are listening to Mozart. It’s a fleeting sound that quickly moves from dissonance to a comfortable C Major. Jadin was born 20 years after Mozart, and his String Quartet Op. 2 No. 1 is a strong homage to the Mozart work — and not just in structure. Jaden’s composition starts with the same dissonant sound of Mozart’s quartet. The month’s final program on July 29 is an exploration of 20th- and 21st-century composers, played on two pianos. Dennis Russell Davies and Maki Namekawa perform the Concertino for Two Pianos Op. 94 by Dmitri Shostakovich, incidental music to Macbeth by Kurt Schwertsik, and Four Movements for Two Pianos by Phillip Glass. Namekawa and Davies are intimately familiar with Glass’s music, having commissioned and premiered many of his works, including the latter work on this program. Join me each Monday for Front Row Washington. Maki Namekawa and
