s this issue of WETA magazine goes to press, I have learned that my good friend and production partner Jim Lehrer is stepping away from the anchor position at PBS NewsHour. While I am of course sad to see less of Jim on the air, the good news for all of us who profoundly appreciate public television’s marquee news broadcast — and online news offerings — is that Jim will remain engaged in the editorial direction of PBS NewsHour and he will appear on the air frequently on Friday nights to moderate the news analysis of Mark Shields and David Brooks. Jim, who with Robin MacNeil developed and built NewsHour from the ground up, is a longtime WETA partner — we work with him and his team each night to produce the broadcast in WETA’s television studio. He has anchored and co-anchored the broadcast for 36 years, and, as he puts it, he has been “laboring in the glories of daily journalism for 52 years” and is ready to step aside from the daily process. Since the fall of 2009, he has paved the way for this transition by sharing the anchor seat with the newsroom dream team that he has assembled: Gwen Ifill, Judy Woodruff, Jeffrey Brown, Ray Suarez and Margaret Warner. The important work of PBS NewsHour continues, and for that and for Jim’s ongoing public service, I and millions of Americans can continue to be very grateful.

ontinuing a decades-long partnership that has produced some of the finest programming in television history, WETA is collaborating with filmmakers Ken Burns and Lynn Novick on a new documentary film, Prohibition, that will premiere October 2–4 on public television nationwide. The three-part, five-and-a-half-hour series chronicles the rise, rule, and fall of the Eighteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and the entire era it encompassed from 1920 to 1933. Prohibition goes beyond tales of gangsters, rum Pouring liquor after a raid, New York, 1921.

runners, flappers and speakeasies to spotlight a divided nation in the throes of momentous transformation. The reform movement was intended to protect individuals, families, and society at large from the devastating effects of alcohol abuse. Instead, a remarkable array of unintended consequences resulted. The film explores the Prohibition movement in historical context and spotlights the monumental social and cultural changes wrought by the Amendment and its ineffectual enforcement. As in their previous productions with WETA, including Baseball, Frank Lloyd Wright, JAZZ, The War and The Tenth Inning, Burns and Novick once again examine American identity, raising intriguing questions — relevant today as they were 100 years ago — about individual rights and responsibilities, means and ends, the proper role of government, and who is, and who is not, considered a “real” American. For more information about Prohibition, visit the preview website at pbs.org/prohibition.

he four-part miniseries The House of Windsor explores the turbulent reign of England’s Windsor family, the most prestigious monarchy in the world. Struggling and succeeding through warfare, prosperity, death, spectacle, adultery, divorce and scandal, the Windsor dynasty has controlled the throne of England for a century, becoming the public face of this famous monarchy. Featuring rare and exclusive footage, the first three programs explore the story of this great family, chronicling the ups and downs of the kings, queens, princes and princesses who have guided England through the 20th century. The fourth part, airing in July, presents a special hour on the nuptials of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip in 1947. The series details triumphs such as the Windsors’ leadership of England through both World Wars, and Queen Elizabeth’s longevity as monarch, celebrating almost 60 years in power; and also scandal and tragedy, including Prince Edward’s abdication of the throne to marry an American divorcee, Prince Charles and Lady Diana’s divorce, and Diana’s 1997 death in a car accident.

Massive Nature

series of BBC wildlife films spotlight “mass” wildlife events — interactions between predators and prey numbering in the millions — exploring animal behavior while posing the question: Is there safety in numbers? The films follow six scenarios: a vast congregation of flamingos set upon by baboons and eagles in Africa’s Rift Valley; the crossing of the crocodile-infested Mara River by vast herds of wildebeest; the movement of millions of sardines up the coast of South Africa stalked by an armada of sea creatures; the dangerous leap of juvenile Adeli penguins into Antarctic waters patrolled by leopard seals; the exodus of 40 million bats from a Florida cave, awaited by a host of hungry predators; and the struggle of migrating Alaskan salmon to swim upstream past waiting bears and eagles.

avid Suchet returns to Masterpiece, reprising his signature role as suave Belgian super-sleuth Hercule Poirot in three new mysteries based on the novels by Agatha Christie. In Three Act Tragedy (June 19), Poirot visits his friend Sir Charles Cartwright (Martin Shaw, Cranford), who hosts a cocktail party at his home where a local reverend chokes to death. Murder seems impossible, but when a second guest dies under similar circumstances, Poirot investigates. In The Clocks (June 26), Poirot is asked to assist in a case examining a young woman’s responsibility for a murder. But mounting complications in the case, including multiple frozen clocks, lead the detective to suspect a cover-up. A third episode, Halloween Party, airs July 3; and don’t miss classic Poirot cases each Thursday night at 9 p.m. as well.

June Music Specials

uring the first two weeks of June, WETA TV 26 and WETA HD present music specials that feature artists performing in an array of genres. Programs from the series Great Performances spotlight Eric Clapton’s guitar festival — with a host of top musicians spanning many musical styles — and a solo concert by the young up-and-coming star Jackie Evancho (right), an overnight sensation from America’s Got Talent. Opry Memories, hosted by John Schneider (above), harkens back to a golden era of country music, featuring historic performances by acts such as Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, George Jones and Loretta Lynn at the Grand Ole Opry. WETA reprises a special concert celebrating the 25th anniversary of the blockbuster musical Les Misérables and airs Folk Rewind, a survey of the classic years of popular folk music. And Moments to Remember and The Big Band Years highlight, respectively, hits from the 1950s and 1960s pop era and great swing-era bands from the 1930s and 1940s.

he long-running series for preschoolers, now in its 41st season, features a current emphasis on science education, promoting everyday investigation that encourages children to explore the worlds of science, technology, engineering and mathematics and become active participants in the processes of scientific inquiry as they make observations, formulate questions and develop answers. The goal of the curriculum is to introduce young children to vocabulary and process skills that are integral in developing scientific reasoning abilities. Characters model these skills, engaging children while they learn science concepts and build knowledge about how the world around them works. As always, the series features beloved muppets (such as Cookie Monster, above right), cast members and celebrities, and also presents street stories, animations and live action films. Sesame Street is produced by Sesame Workshop, a nonprofit educational organization. Sesame Street is funded in part by a grant through the Public Broadcasting Service and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and public television viewers. Sesame Street is underwritten in part by the Beaches Resorts, PNC, UnitedHealthcare, Earth’s Best Organic, and The Good Egg Project.

I

n a new series that is coproduced by WETA, food writer and chef Pati Jinich — the official chef at the Mexican Cultural Institute in Washington, D.C. — introduces the fascinating world of Mexican cuisine. She infuses her recipes with a sprinkling of culture and tradition and demonstrates just how easy it is to make authentic, regional Mexican food at home. Each episode is centered on a singular Mexican experience: the taste of traditional foods such as vanilla or avocado, tropical sweets and popular street foods, mysterious and delicious grains used by the Aztecs, and more. Jinich then translates that ingredient or topic into approachable dishes for the American cook. Spotlighted among the 13 programs are quesadillas, cooking with tomatillos, Mexican picnic and brunch foods, recipes with chorizo sausage, cinnamon in Mexican cooking, and wrapped treats such as tamales.
