ach year more than one million students drop out of high school in America, dramatically altering their prospects for a bright future. In response to this crisis, WETA has joined a national public media initiative — American Graduate: Let’s Make it Happen (website americangraduate.org) — aimed at improving high school graduation rates. Public broadcasting stations in 20 “hub” regions where the dropout crisis is most acute are at the core of the initiative, which was launched and funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), working with national partners such as America’s Promise Alliance and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. WETA is also working with local partners including Double the Numbers, the College Success Foundation, and DC Children and Youth Investment Trust Corporation. Locally, American Graduate DC brings together WETA and public media stations WAMU and WHUT to work closely with youth development and community organizations, business groups, the public schools, advocacy groups, and others to build awareness about the dropout crisis and bring people together to make a difference in the national capital area. WETA is undertaking a gap analysis of dropout prevention services, partnering to create multimedia classroom resources for teachers, and developing an online volunteer database. Currently available online is a robust list of organizations through which the public can pitch in to lend a hand in this initiative. Other activities by the D.C. hub of American Graduate include a Teacher Town Hall — with WAMU 88.5’s Matt McCleskey — scheduled for June 5 in WHUT’s studios. Next Avenue Web Initiative Spotlights the 50+ Generation

ETA is joining in on a new public broadcasting initiative — the website Next Avenue — that is focused on America’s booming over-50 population. The innovative site, weta.org/nextavenue, which launched May 15, aims to inform and inspire this constituency as these adults explore new chapters of life — and capitalize on the wealth of life experience available within this demographic group, sharing their knowledge to help others. Next Avenue was created to offer an inclusive, vibrant and congenial gathering room for curious learners to come together, discover, and explore a constellation of trustworthy, inspirational, entertaining and actionable content specifically tailored to the concerns and interests of the 50+ generation. The website publishes articles and 2 JUNE 2012

blog posts from top experts and leading journalists on the topics most important to baby boomers, such as: Money & Security, Living & Learning, Caregiving, Work & Purpose and Health & Well-Being. The website also features videos, e-newsletters, and opportunities to connect with others on these and other important issues. Next Avenue aims to make sense of the impact of relevant developing news and points to critical information and concrete actions in a way that mirrors the intelligence, thoughtfulness, curiosity and vitality of the public television audience. n February 1964, the Beatles arrived on U.S. shores, kicking off a musical invasion from the British Isles that took America by storm and reverberates to this day. A new music special, The British Beat — the latest concert program in the My Music series from TJ Lubinsky — revisits classic ’60s hits from that era. Petula Clark (right) hosts — and performs her hit “Downtown.” The all-star reunion features the duo Peter and Gordon performing “World Without Love” and “I Go to Pieces.” Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent of the Zombies perform “Time of the Season” and “She’s Not There.” Also included are hits such as “To Sir With Love” by Lulu, “Mrs. Brown You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter” by Peter Noone of Herman’s Hermits, and “Game of Love” and “A Groovy Kind of Love” by Wayne Fontana. Additional highlights include “Needles & Pins” by Mike Pender’s Searchers, and an archival performance by Dusty Springfield and vintage clips of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

Oscar Hammerstein’s legendary works include Show Boat (1927), Oklahoma! (1943), Carousel (1945), South Pacific (1949), The King and I (1951) and The Sound of Music (1959). Brimming with movie clips from his greatest musicals, this special program features interviews with Stephen Sondheim, Harold Prince, Shirley Jones, Mitzi Gaynor, Hammerstein family members and others. Morrison, who played Lieutenant Cable in the Tony Award-winning 2008 revival of South Pacific at Lincoln Center, adds the perspective of a new generation of Broadway fans.

illed as the next-best thing to seeing The Beatles, the band Rain performs a tribute concert — featuring the full range of The Beatles’ discography — live onstage, including some of the most complex and challenging songs that The Beatles themselves recorded in the studio but never performed for an audience. Rain has mastered every song, gesture and nuance of the legendary foursome, delivering a totally live, note-fornote performance. This transporting multi-media concert features early hits and later classics (from “I Want to Hold Your Hand” and “All My Loving” to “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” “Strawberry Fields,” “Revolution,” “Give Peace a Chance” and many more). Rain’s Beatles tribute show, an offshoot of the popular Broadway production of Beatlemania, was itself a big hit on Broadway during its 2010–2011 run and has toured nationally.

Queen Victoria’s Empire

t the time of Queen Victoria’s birth in 1819, England was an agrarian society; but within a few short decades, the small island nation would be transformed into an industrial superpower, with an empire spanning the globe. The 2001 series Queen Victoria’s Empire is both the story of this era and an intriguing portrait of a queen who reigned for 64 years, ruling over a fifth of the world’s population. It is the story of influential men who would shape a distinctively British imperialism: Gladstone, Disraeli, Livingstone, Rhodes and Prince Albert, Victoria’s husband. Whether driven by profit, passion or noble deeds, these figures would fuel expansion unequaled in history, forever changing Britain and the lands it controlled.

Masterpiece Mystery!: Wallander, Series I

enneth Branagh stars as Wallander, the scruffy Swedish detective of author Henning Mankell’s internationally bestselling books, in Series I of the Masterpiece Mystery! adaptations. Filmed on location in Sweden, and set in the bucolic town of Ystad, Wallander features the middle-aged sleuth battling personal demons as he investigates a series of gritty murder cases. Contending with a recent break-up with his wife, blood sugar gone haywire, a daughter trying to run his life, and an artist father succumbing to Alzheimer’s disease who paints the same scene over and over, Wallander must also focus his concentration on the complex cases unfolding around him. Funding for Masterpiece is provided by Viking River Cruises, with additional support from public television viewers and contributors to The Masterpiece Trust.

three-part series spotlights and celebrates three of Britain’s royal buildings — Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse — showcasing the treasures found within them. Journalist Fiona Bruce hosts the BBC production. The Queen’s Palaces explores the art and architecture, the interior decoration, and priceless objects and artifacts of these historic buildings, revealing the stories behind them. In each episode, Bruce relates the history of the respective palace’s creation as well, so that each film marries the chronology of history with a walk around a beautiful interior. Contributing their insights and stories are curators of the Royal Collection.

he number one sitcom in Britain, Outnumbered is a semi-scripted, partly improvised series that follows the battle of wills between two parents and their three young children. Hugh Dennis and Claire Skinner star as a father and mother outnumbered by their children (played by Tyger DrewHoney, Daniel Roche and Ramona Marquez). The series focuses on the Brockman household, a middle-class London family. The father is a history teacher and the mother is a part-time personal assistant. The children are sarcastic teen Jake, 15; hyperactive, pathological liar Ben, 11; and Karen, 9, who asks a lot of questions. The comedy spotlights how living with children can provide both funny and cringeworthy experiences, with the parents trying to raise their family with the minimum of emotional damage for all concerned.

Front Row Washington Joins in on “British Invasion Week”

Choral Showcase Sundays at 9 p.m.

ll the singing on Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s Sunday night, 9 p.m. broadcast Choral Showcase in June is in English, but not all by English composers. Georg Friedrich Handel, who spent almost twothirds of his life in England, became famous for (and very successful with) his English operas and oratorios. The oratorio Israel in Egypt airs on Choral Showcase on June 3. During Josef Haydn’s two very successful visits to London, in the last decade of the 18th century, he heard Handel’s oratorios—very likely including Israel in Egypt—and vowed on the spot to write his own oratorios. His masterpiece, The Creation, was one of them, written initially to a German text, but followed by the English version (specifically for London performance) a few months later. Choral Showcase presents the English version of The Creation on the program on June 10. On June 17, a day before the start of “British Invasion Week,” Choral Showcase spotlights Ralph Vaughan William’s stunning portrait of the sea—his Sea Symphony. Concluding the special week on June 24, and celebrating the transition from spring to summer (on the previous Wednesday), Choral Showcase features Benjamin Britten’s composition Spring Symphony and Sir Arnold Bax’s Enchanted Summer.

Gordon Jacob’s delightfully engaging and sonorous Wind Quintet No. 2 from 1980 opens the program, which also includes Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Suite de Ballet for flute and piano and Sir Hubert Parry’s Nonet for flute, oboe, 2 clarinets, 2 horns, and 2 bassoons in B-flat major. The all-British program is anchored by Sir Edward Elgar’s Piano Quartet in A minor, Op. 84, a lush, at times brooding, at times ecstatic work that’s given a brilliant turn by members of the Fessenden Ensemble. Also this month, on Monday, June 4 at 9 p.m., Front Row Washington presents a recital of Chopin Preludes, Op. 28 by Alon Goldstein at Downtown Piano Works in Frederick, Maryland. A rising star, Mr. Goldstein was featured in solo piano recital on the final day of this year’s Gilmore International Keyboard Festival in May. On Monday, June 11 at 9 p.m., Candlelight Concert Society presents the Grammy Award-winning Pacifica Quartet performing works by Beethoven and Shostakovich, as well as Schumann’s E-flat major Piano Quintet, with pianist (and full-time physician) Dr. Christopher Shih.
