Presenting Classic and Contemporary British Television at Its Best Happy Third Anniversary WETA UK!

Celebrating 25 Years of Public Dear WETA Members,

T

his month, WETA celebrates a very special milestone. On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the community we serve, it is my great pleasure to congratulate WETA President and CEO Sharon Percy Rockefeller on her 25 years of outstanding leadership of our wonderful public broadcasting company. With great passion and dedication, since 1989 Sharon has led WETA to extraordinary achievements in service to Greater Washington and to our entire nation as well. Sharon has brought WETA to new heights of excellence in broadcasting by carrying forward the values and ideals of former WETA Chairman Willard Kiplinger and former President Elizabeth Campbell, who founded WETA more than 50 years ago. They established WETA to engage people of all ages in the joy and richness of lifelong learning. Sharon has built an extraordinary public service enterprise based upon their vision. Securing a Permanent Home Among her many great achievements, Sharon arranged the purchase of a permanent headquarters in Shirlington, Virginia. In its new home, she has led WETA into the digital age by harnessing technology that enabled an enormous broadcast expansion. WETA quadrupled its local television service to four channels, including the popular, exclusive WETA UK; widened the reach of its radio broadcasts; and launched highly successful learning media websites on topics such as child literacy and traumatic brain injury.

Championing Classical Music For radio, WETA made a momentous decision in 2007 by establishing Classical WETA 90.9 FM as the exclusive classical music radio station in the nation’s capital. Classical WETA is now the most-listened-to classical station in America. Among its excellent programming, the station produces world-class performances of live music by partnering with a remarkable array of eminent performing arts organizations in Greater Washington. Emerging as a Top Content Producer Complementing its reputation for television broadcast excellence, WETA has emerged as a production content powerhouse over the last 25 years. On behalf of the community of Greater Washington, WETA has produced an impressive portfolio of television productions spotlighting the history, landmarks, people and resources of the national capital area. Nationwide, WETA creates and presents much of the most distinguished public affairs, arts and history programming on television. Last year, WETA acquired and now fully produces the PBS NewsHour, adding to a stellar portfolio that includes Washington Week with Gwen Ifill and an array of major public affairs documentary films. WETA has become America’s storyteller, in a decades-long partnership with filmmaker Ken Burns creating extraordinary productions such as The Civil War, The National Parks: America’s Best Idea and The Roosevelts: An Intimate History that

Celebrating Sharon and WETA This month, WETA marks Sharon’s 25-year milestone with a special celebration, The Silver Salute, chaired by David Rubenstein. Surrounding this event, the Eugene B. Casey Foundation has made a very generous inaugural contribution to the WETA Program Fund for Excellence, established in honor of Sharon’s anniversary. The fund will support the company’s robust ongoing production efforts. We can all be enormously proud of the many WETA accomplishments under Sharon’s leadership. Dedicated to enriching the lives of audiences in Greater Washington and throughout the nation, WETA will continue to provide exceptional services to the public with Sharon at the helm. Sincerely,

June Drama on WETA TV 26/HD Masterpiece: Poldark

New 7-part series begins June 21 at 9 p.m.

ROBERT VIGLASKY/MAMMOTH SCREEN FOR MASTERPIECE

A

lmost 40 years ago, swashbuckling hero Captain Ross Poldark galloped across the television screens of millions of public television viewers, vexing villains and winning hearts in one of Masterpiece’s earliest hit series, based on a beloved series of novels by Winston Graham. Now the gallant captain rides again in a new Poldark adaptation — with all the action, adventure, and romance of the original and again set against beautiful Cornish scenery. The seven-part series, airing Sundays, June 21-August 2, stars Aidan Turner as the protagonist, a battle-scarred redcoat who returns to England after the American Revolutionary War to find that his father is dead, his lands are ruined and his true love is about to marry his first cousin. Eleanor Tomlinson co-stars as the servant Demelza; Heida Reed portrays Elizabeth Chenoweth, the beautiful young woman who gave Poldark her ring as a love token before he left for America; and Robin Ellis, who starred as the original Poldark, plays Reverend Halse, the village’s sin-obsessed parson.

Funding for Masterpiece is provided by Viking River Cruises and Ralph Lauren Corporation with additional support from public television viewers and contributors to The Masterpiece Trust.

begins June 21 at 10 p.m.

ona Chaplin stars in a BBC drama about the hopes, fears, triumphs and tragedies of frontline medics during World War I. Set in a tented field hospital on the coast of France, the series follows a team of doctors, nurses and women volunteers who work to aid men wounded in the trenches. The hospital is a frontier: between the battlefield and home front and as well between the old rules and hierarchies and a new way of thinking. Each of the series’ six episodes, airing June 21 to July 26, features stories about the patients, who include British soldiers, troops from all over the world and even local civilians. Among the cast is Kevin Doyle (Molesley, the Earl of Grantham’s servant, on Downton Abbey).

he 54th production in WETA’s dazzling arts series In Performance at the White House showcases gospel music, a foundation upon which popular American music — from the blues, soul, rhythm and blues, and rock ‘n’ roll — has been built. Emmylou Harris, The Gospel Tradition: In Rodney Crowell and Rhiannon Giddens Performance at the White House features a lineup of top musical artists headlined by Aretha Franklin and showcases an evening of celebration with President and Mrs. Obama at the White House in honor of gospel music and its profound influence on American music. Taped at the White House in April, the concert broadcast is a production of WETA; TV One; CoMedia; Mark Krantz Productions; Cappy Productions; and Black and White TV Inc. The program premieres Friday, June 26 at 9 p.m. on WETA TV 26, WETA HD and PBS stations nationwide and will be simulcast on cable channel TV One. The Gospel Tradition includes performances by gospel superstars and pop music icons Bishop Rance Allen, Pastor Shirley Caesar, Rodney Crowell, Aretha Franklin, Rhiannon Giddens, Emmylou Harris, Darlene Love, Lyle Lovett, Tamela Mann, the Morgan State University Choir and Michelle Williams — with musical artist and

producer T Bone Burnett as executive music director and Robin Roberts as program host. Among the stellar offerings in the hour-long program are Franklin performing “Higher Ground,” Love delivering “People Get Ready” and Giddens singing “Up Above My Head.” In Performance at the White House has been produced by WETA since 1978, spanning every administration since President Carter’s and embracing virtually every genre of American performing arts: pop, country, gospel, jazz, theatre and dance among them. The series was created to showcase the rich fabric of American culture in the setting of the nation’s most famous home. Darlene Love On the morning of the concert taping, First Lady Michelle Obama hosted “The History of Gospel Music,” an educational workshop held in the State Dining Room for more than 120 middle school, high school and college-level students from across the country. The event was led by musicologist and music educator Robert Santelli, executive director of the GRAMMY Museum (of Los Angeles), which is offering downloadable curriculum and educational materials for middle and high school teachers, available at pbs.org/whitehouse.

Corporate funding for The Gospel Tradition: In Performance at the White House is provided by PepsiCo. Foundation support is provided by The Annenberg Foundation. My Music: Sister Acts

airs Friday, June 6 at 8:30 p.m. on WETA TV26/HD

A

new My Music special from impresario TJ Lubinsky celebrates the sweet sounds of sibling singing groups — from the Andrews Sisters to the McGuire Sisters, the Lennon Sisters to the King Sisters. Kathy Lennon of the Lennon Sisters and Tina Cole of The Four King Cousins host the program. Beginning with the The McGuire Sisters pioneering and influential Boswell Sisters in the 1920s, sister acts became popular attractions in American music as radio, film, stage and record performances enchanted audiences with harmonic love songs and bouncy novelty numbers. The Andrews Sisters, who emerged during the Big Band era, became nationwide favorites with a string of huge hits. Later, the King Sisters also emerged and were frequently seen on television variety shows, an outlet that helped make stars out of The McGuire Sisters, followed by the Lennon Sisters, who were weekly regulars for more than a decade on The Lawrence Welk Show. These singing groups appealed to listeners of all ages in an era when families would gather to enjoy entertainment together.

ETA reprises a My Music performance special that features country music legends uniting to deliver their biggest and most-loved hit recordings from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Country music legend Roy Clark hosts the trip down three decades of memory lane, setting up performances from Glen Campbell, Crystal Gayle, Hank Locklin, Bill Anderson, BJ Thomas, the Bellamy Brothers, the Browns and more — intermixed with classic full-length archival gems from the vaults by artists such as Gene Autry, Eddy Arnold, Tammy Wynette, Johnny Cash and Buck Owens. “This is about respect, and preserving the legacy of so many classic country performers that defined the soundtrack of generations,” said TJ Lubinsky, the executive producer and creator of the music series. “In our My Music specials, we’ve gone from doo wop to disco, folk rock to movie songs; now it’s time for music straight from the heartland.”

arren Clarke, one of Britain’s best-loved actors, gives a consummate performance as the politically incorrect, no-nonsense Yorkshire Detective Superintendent (DS) Andy Dalziel in the BBC mystery series Dalziel & Pascoe, based on the best-selling novels of award-winning writer Reginald Hill. A blunt, vulgar man with a penetrating wit, Dalziel is from the old school of policing and relies on his instinct, knowledge of human nature and experience to get results. Colin Buchanan portrays Peter Pascoe, the perfect foil to his brash boss. A cultured, whiz-kid sidekick, and one of the new breed of career police officers, he is armed with a degree in Social Sciences, a caring attitude and a sharp brain that he brings to bear in their investigations. Produced in 12 seasons from 1996 through 2007, the series offers an engaging blend of classic murder mysteries, compelling characters and down-to-earth humor. This month, WETA UK presents episodes from seasons Four and Five.

The cast includes Claire Foy (Little Dorrit) as Anne Boleyn; Anton Lesser (Endeavour); Mark Gatiss (Sherlock); and Jonathan Pryce (Cranford). June 3 NSO Showcase pays tribute to the Maestro on the first anniversary of his death By Nicole Lacroix, Evening On-Air Host

COURTESY NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

In Memoriam Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos

n Friday evening, March 14, less than three months before his death from cancer during the following June, Spanish conductor Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos led the National Symphony Orchestra in the second of three subscription concerts. The Kennedy Center Concert Hall was packed. All seemed well as the Maestro began conducting the last piece on the program, Respighi’s orchestral showpiece, The Pines of Rome. The Washington Post’s critic Philip Kennicott was there: [Despite a noticeable weakening during the third movement of the piece]…Frühbeck was obviously determined not to deny the audience the rousing pleasure of Respighi’s potboiler. He grabbed at the metal rail behind him and stood even as the orchestra began to trail off, not sure whether he was well enough to continue. He obviously wasn’t, but he continued anyway, cueing the percussion and brass with a few sharp gestures above his head as he sat, slumped, on the podium. A few moments before the end of the piece, he stood up and conducted its last moments. The audience response was thunderous. Frühbeck turned and faced them, gave a wan smile, then left the stage. When he returned to acknowledge the ovation, many of the musicians, half or a third of his age, were in tears. Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s program NSO Showcase features a tribute to Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos on Wednesday, June 3 at 9 p.m., presenting three works from the March 2014 Kennedy Center performances: Two Nocturnes by Debussy, El Amor Brujo by Manuel de Falla with mezzo-soprano Kelley O’Connor, and the Respighi Pines of Rome. We’ll also hear the Maestro conduct the NSO in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6, Pastoral, from an April 2006 concert. Join us to celebrate Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, who won so many hearts in Washington during his eight-year tenure as Principal Guest Conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra, as we dedicate the June NSO Showcase program to his memory. NSO Showcase airs on the first Wednesday each month. Visit classicalweta.org to learn more about the broadcast.

qual pay for equal work is not just a modern concept. In the mid-1800’s, composer, teacher and virtuoso pianist Louise Farrenc finally got fiscal parity as professor of piano at the famous Paris Conservatory after a hugely successful premiere of her nonet. You can hear her Trio for Flute, Cello and Piano, Op. 45 on Monday, June 1 at 9 p.m. as Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s local concert broadcast Front Row Washington presents the American Chamber Players in recital at the Kreeger Museum’s 10th June Chamber Festival. This year’s festival is held June 5–12 at the Kreeger. On the June 8 broadcast, hear Croatian guitarist Zoran Duki´c from a Marlow Guitar Series concert with delightfully ear-catching works, including the Tiny Knit Dance from Dušan Bogdanovi´c’s Six Balkan Miniatures, and Two Balkan pieces by Miroslav Tadi´c, Macedonian Girl and Walk Dance. Also this month, we feature two Israeli-born pianists in recital at The Phillips Collection. Einav Yarden is heard on June 15. In reviewing Yarden’s performance of works by Bach, Ravel and Schubert, Washington Post music critic Stephen Brookes described her as “a probing,

incisive pianist with a beautiful sound and an impressively transparent touch.” The June 29 program features Shai Wosner, winner of an Avery Fisher Career Grant, in a Phillips Collection recital. Playing without pause, he alternates short works by Beethoven and Debussy and concludes with Beethoven’s “Waldstein” piano sonata. Lest we forget, the June 22 program offers a wonderful piece you’ve probably never heard: Endre Szervánszky’s Trio for Flute, Violin, and Viola, composed in 1951 and performed by Musicians from Marlboro at the Freer Gallery of Art. A Hungarian composer and teacher, Szervánszky was given the “Righteous among the Nations” award by the State of Israel to honor non-Jews who risked their lives to save Jews from the Nazis. The concert also features György Kurtág’s 1988 short work, Officium breve in memoriam Andreæ Szervánszky, op. 28. A Debussy sonata and Beethoven string quintet round out this well-played program.

A Mass of Life on Choral Showcase Sunday, June 21 at 9 p.m.

O

By David Ginder, Morning On-Air Host

n June 21 on the Sunday night program Choral Showcase, we’ve scheduled the piece that is arguably Frederick Delius’s best work: A Mass of Life. English conductor Thomas Beecham thought so; Sir Thomas championed all of Delius’s music but spoke especially highly of the work and conducted its premiere in 1909. Bach Choir conductor David Hill (who conducted the piece at Royal Festival Hall in 2009 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of its premiere), called it the apex of Delius’s work. “Mass” suggests a setting of the Latin Mass, but A Mass of Life is not such a setting. In fact, it has nothing to do with church at all (but it’s not anti-Christian either). It’s a hymn of life, with the words from Friedrich Nietzsche’s Also sprach Zarathustra. But does this mean that, in order to enjoy this music, you need to fully accept Nietzsche’s Superman, with its fearlessness and self-reliance? Not at all. Delius’s masterpiece is simply a celebration that speaks heartfully to all who embrace life, with a relaxing stream, soaring mountains, deep forests, the softening of human and natural activities at evening-time, and the expression of the dance. The young German conductor Fritz Cassirer assisted Delius in choosing the sections of Zarathustra to set. He left out most of the pagan sermons, so the text is Nietzsche at his most lyrical. And Delius’s manner of setting words further enhances the piece’s life-embracing joy. The composer didn’t fret about details when setting words to music, avoiding word-painting and line-by-line specifics. Rather, with broad strokes, each section of the piece breathes joy or Frederick peace or melancholy in a way that, for many, is clearer than Nietzsche’s words. Delius
