JUNE 2016 MAGAZINE FOR MEMBERS
DANCING ON THE EDGE Chiwetel Ejiofor heads a star-studded cast in the Jazz Age British drama series
WETA Focus A
s part of our annual June membership campaign in support of WETA broadcasts and services, this month we present a lineup of entertaining and informative television specials on WETA TV 26 and WETA HD that feature a wide array of musical offerings, history films, advice on healthful living, and more. As the donor drive concludes later in the month, the traditional summer mystery season begins with a superb block of Sunday-night dramas that extends into July. Topping the bill are new episodes of the Masterpiece series Endeavour, the popular Inspector Morse “prequel”; the lush Jazz Age drama Dancing on the Edge, which features an extraordinary cast of top stars; and an acclaimed, contemporary, internationally themed mystery series, The Tunnel. For mystery fans, we also present classic BBC adaptations of Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple novels — with Joan Hickson in her signature role — in Thursday-night double features. Later in the summer, you can also look forward to more new drama as in August Masterpiece features the final episodes of a longtime Mystery! mainstay and fan favorite, Inspector Lewis, starring Kevin Whately. Remember that you can find many other outstanding mystery series around the clock on the WETA UK channel, including additional Miss Marple episodes in June. Enjoy the month’s specials and our many fine drama offerings, and thank you for your support of WETA.

Dancing on the Edge
he acclaimed British mystery series Dancing on the Edge joins the Sunday-night drama lineup beginning June 26, airing before Masterpiece series Endeavour. The eight-part Golden Globe-nominated series, written and directed by accomplished British playwright and scriptwriter Stephen Poliakoff (The Lost Prince) and produced by the BBC, is a 1930s period drama detailing the meteoric rise of a black jazz band in London led by Louis Lester, played by BAFTA Award-winner Chiwetel Ejiofor (right). As the band thrives and prevails in the face of racism and classism, Louis finds himself entangled in a series of unfortunate events: he becomes a suspect in a murder case, putting him on the run and possibly leading to the band’s demise. In addition to Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave, Amistad, Kinky Boots), who was nominated for a 2014 Emmy Award for his performance in the series, Dancing on the Edge features John Goodman as an American real estate mogul; Jacqueline Bisset as a wealthy aristocrat, a role which won her a Golden Globe; Janet Montgomery (Entourage); Angel Coulby (Merlin); Wunmi Mosaku; Tom Hughes; Joanna Vanderham (Masterpiece: The Paradise); and Matthew Goode, above (The Good Wife, Masterpiece: Downton Abbey).

he wait is over! After a cliffhanger finale to Season Two last summer, Masterpiece Mystery! presents new Sunday-night episodes in the Inspector Morse prequel series Endeavour, starring Shaun Evans as the young Oxfordshire police detective Endeavour Morse, before his signature red Jaguar but with his deductive powers already running in high gear. In four new programs starting June 19, Endeavour must contend with the aftermath of the tragic events in Season Two that left him languishing in prison and his mentor DI Fred Thursday (Roger Allam) near death. Set respectively in March, April and June (for two episodes) 1967, the films follow Morse through brooding over suspension from duty to giving serious consideration of his future on the force, leading to an agonizing conclusion to the season. Also on Sundays, beginning June 19 at 10:30 p.m. following Endeavour is the acclaimed 10-part British crime series The Tunnel, a remake of the Danish/ Swedish hit series The Bridge. The series is set against the backdrop of Europe in crisis. When a prominent French politician is found dead in the middle of the Channel Tunnel, straddling the border between England and France, detectives Karl Roebuck, played by Stephen Dillane (Game of Thrones) and Elise Wassermann, played by Clémence Poésy (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows), are sent to investigate on behalf of their respective countries and are forced into an uneasy partnership to find a killer.
Funding for Masterpiece is provided by Viking River Cruises and Audible with additional support from public television viewers and contributors to The Masterpiece Trust.
Miss Marple Classics
n Wednesdays on WETA UK, and the last two Thursdays of the month on WETA TV 26/HD, WETA presents classic BBC adaptations of Agatha Christie Miss Marple murder mysteries that star Joan Hickson in the role as the spinster sleuth of the village of St. Mary Mead. The cases — At Bertram’s Hotel and Nemesis (June 8 & 15 respectively on WETA UK and June 23 on WETA TV 26/HD); Sleeping Murder (June 22, WETA UK); 4:50 from Paddington (June 29, WETA UK); and A Caribbean Mystery and They Do It with Mirrors (June 30, WETA TV 26/HD) — are airing for the first time on WETA Television. After picking up her knitting needles and unraveling her first crime, Hickson made the role of Miss Marple her own in these mysteries, filmed on location and featuring period atmosphere. Hickson received two BAFTA Award nominations for her acting in the series, which is lauded as the most faithful to Christie’s novels.

concert celebrates the continuing legacy of the iconic folk music group that emerged in 1957 from San Francisco’s North Beach club scene to bring the rich tradition of American folk music into the mainstream for the first time. During the late ’50s and early ’60s, the Kingston Trio enjoyed worldwide fame, influencing the musical tastes of a generation. Nearly 60 years after “Tom Dooley” shot to the top of the charts, in June 2015 the Trio’s current incarnation joined retired founding member Bob Shane for a special performance, joined by musical contemporaries and artists influenced by the group: Timothy B. Schmit of the Eagles, Al Jardine of The Beach Boys, Trini Lopez, Barry McGuire of the New Christy Minstrels, Sana Christian, and The Limeliters, along with Josh Reynolds, son of the late founding Trio member Nick Reynolds. Among the many songs featured are “Sloop John B,” “Scarlet Ribbons,” “Raspberries, Strawberries,” “The Reverend Mr. Black,” “Worried Man,” “Scotch and Soda” and “Charlie on the MTA.” The program repeats Sunday, June 5 at 10:30 p.m.

Carol Burnett’s Favorite Sketches
conic comedienne Carol Burnett presents personally selected favorite moments from her long-running variety series The Carol Burnett Show, featuring Burnett herself and her hilarious troupe of regulars — Harvey Korman, Tim Conway, Vicki Lawrence and Lyle Waggoner — along with special guests Steve Martin and Betty White. Her favorite moments include some of her most unforgettable characters — Starlet O’Hara, Norma Desmond, Mrs. Wiggins and, of course, Eunice, long-suffering wife of Ed and daughter of Mama — and sketches such as “As the Stomach Turns: Close Encounters”; “The Dentist,” with Korman and Conway; Conway’s “The Oldest Man”; and more. The program repeats Monday, June 13 at 9:30 p.m. and Wednesday, June 15 at 8 p.m.

The Allergy Solution with Leo Galland, MD

Thursday, June 2 at 8 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD
RUSSELL KAYE
enowned physician, researcher and writer Leo Galland, a leader in integrated medicine, hosts The Allergy Solution, a special based on his latest book, which presents his method for treating allergy. Galland also explores facts about the relationship between allergies and weight gain. According to Galland, one in three people suffer from allergic diseases such as asthma, hay fever, eczema and food allergies — as well as hidden allergies that lead to unexplained weight gain, anxiety, fatigue, ADHD, depression, digestive problems, chronic pain and much more. The doctor presents his four-step program to reversing allergies by getting to the root causes and not just suppressing symptoms with drugs. In The Allergy Solution, Galland takes viewers through the same steps he uses with his own patients; and he explains what he calls the Four Hidden Truths about allergies, and what individual sufferers can do to empower themselves to reverse symptoms and treat underlying factors. He also explores how a host of chronic conditions that are attributed to such vague factors as “aging” are, in fact, symptoms of allergy.

WETA UK Highlights n acclaimed drama by screenwriter and filmmaker Jeff Pope (Philomena) tells the true story of Malcolm Webster (portrayed by Reece Shearsmith) — a seemingly mild-mannered male nurse who marries, and then attempts to kill, a succession of women to cash in on their life insurance policies. Over a 13-year period, Webster poisons and murders his first wife, attempts to do the same to his second wife and devises a different scheme to deceive his third fiancée. ndependent, glamorous and unflappable lady detective the Honorable Miss Phryne Fisher (Essie Davis) is a thoroughly modern woman of the late 1920s, investigating crimes in between-the-wars Melbourne. The gorgeously costumed drama follows Fisher from the shadowy lanes of the city to the halls of academia, from high-class brothels to haute couture, as she defends the innocent and juggles admirers with panache, while keeping up her dance around Detective Inspector Jack Robinson, portrayed by Nathan Page. Ashleigh Cummings (Dot Williams), Hugo Johnstone-Burt (Constable Collins) and Miriam Margolyes (Aunt Prudence) co-star.

rish drama Jack Taylor stars Iain Glen (Game of Thrones) as a self-destructive, stubborn ex-officer of the Garda Síochána (the Irish Guards, the national police) trying to earn a living as a private detective in his native Galway. Based on the novels of Ken Bruen, the programs follow the maverick investigator, who — formerly overly fond of the bottle — has burned a lot of bridges but still has a knack for uncovering the truth. Only his friend Garda Kate Noonan (Nora-Jane Noone) will help him, though even she has to walk a fine line between aiding Taylor and irritating her boss. Taylor finds evil at every turn, tracking dangerous killers in a series of gritty cases.

Mozart, Haydn & Gershwin on NSO Showcase Wednesday, June 1 at 9 p.m.
f you were to think of the June NSO Showcase as an Oreo cookie, the chocolate bits would be Mozart, and the cream filling would be Haydn and Gershwin. National Symphony Orchestra Music Director Christoph Eschenbach conducts the entire program, which was recorded at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Mozart’s Overture to The Magic Flute opens the concert. Just nine weeks before his untimely death, Mozart finally had a major triumph with The Magic Flute. From the first three brass chords of the opening to the sprightly music that follows, the Overture has remained one of Mozart’s most popular works. Haydn’s early Symphony No.21 had never been programmed by the NSO before its October 2013 performance. It dates from the beginning of his long tenure as Kapellmeister to the Esterhazys, who provided the young composer with a perfect musical laboratory: an orchestra of 13 to 15 players and the freedom to experiment. Early in Eschenbach’s tenure as NSO music director, he celebrated the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy’s inauguration with a recording on the Orion label, JFK Remembered. Featured on this 2-CD set was a performance of George Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F with American pianist Tzimon Barto. The Concerto was Gershwin’s first foray into the world of classical music composition and was the result of a great deal of intense study. He even hired his own 55-piece orchestra to test the orchestration. Classical with jazz overtones, the piece was a popular hit. The grand finale of June’s NSO Showcase is Mozart’s last symphony, No. 41, “the Jupiter,” famed for its extraordinary fugal coda in which Mozart juggles five different themes into an extraordinary double fugue. Join us June 1 at 9 p.m. as Christoph Eschenbach and the National Symphony Orchestra perform Mozart, Haydn and the so-called “American Mozart,” George Gershwin, in a delightful program. St. Albans

merican composer James D’Angelo has written many choral pieces in his appealing, multi-faceted style. His music is contemplative and atmospheric as many new sacred choral works are today, but it’s so much more as well. D’Angelo’s rigorous technical demands make every moment of his pieces satisfying on many levels; his engaging rhythmic surprises, his arresting melodic ideas and harmonies, and his powerful dynamic changes make for inspiring music to experience (and challenging music to perform!). Your focus won’t wander in a D’Angelo piece. His music is a happy discovery for Choral Showcase, particularly from a new recording (on the Gothic label) by Cathedra, conducted by Michael McCarthy. From the CD, we’ve scheduled Missa Brevis (written in 2005) on June 12 and The Holy City on June 19. D’Angelo is a diverse musician: he formed the Trio D’Angelo (piano, soprano and clarinet) in 2010; he performs as a jazz pianist in the UK with singer Jenna Monroe; and he is known for his work with sound as therapy. D’Angelo has been based in England since the late 1990s, and another composer we highlight this month is Englishman Herbert Howells. During the second half of his creative life, Howells focused increasingly on choral and organ music. His last work — I Love All Beauteous Things — is scheduled on the June 19 broadcast. Beauteous Things can be heard as a fond statement by Howells on the beauteous works he created during his long life. The words are by friend Robert Bridges — Poet Laureate in Britain from 1913 to 1930 — and the piece was written for St. Albans Cathedral (England). Our performance, from a recent Hyperion CD, is by the Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge. Howells’ music for Communion — including Kyrie, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, Agnus Dei and Gloria — airs June 12.

Ying Quartet
n 1992, a string quartet began an experiment in the small northeastern Iowa town of Jesup. Funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Ying Quartet brought music throughout the rural community by playing in churches, social clubs, workplaces and banks. Today, this Grammy Award-winning ensemble is a regular in major concert halls around the world, with robust and passionate playing grounded in their Iowa residency, when music-making became an integral part of the community’s life. On Monday night, June 6 at 9 p.m. on Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s local concert broadcast Front Row Washington, you can hear the Ying Quartet in a Chamber Music at the Barns at Wolf Trap recital performing Schumann’s F Major Quartet, Op. 41 No. 2 and Johannes Brahms’ first string quartet, a work that he revised for 20 years before it was finally published. Draw up a list of prominent American classical musicians, and there’s no doubt cellist Lynn Harrell would be included. A consummate soloist, chamber player, conductor and teacher, Mr. Harrell enjoys an international audience along with an extensive discography of more than 30 recordings. Last October, he came to Washington to perform in the Phillips Collection’s 75th anniversary season. Joined by pianist Gavin Martin, Mr. Harrell’s recital included sonatas by Mendelssohn and Debussy, Robert Schumann’s popular Fantasiestücke, Op. 73, and J.S. Bach’s signature Suite No. 3 in D major for unaccompanied cello. You won’t want to miss his performance Monday, June 20 at 9 p.m. We round out the month on Front Row Washington with performances by two pianists, Cellist Lynn Harrell Yael Weiss and Olivier Cavé. On Monday, June 13, Israeli-born Yael Weiss performs Beethoven’s C minor sonata Op. 111 and Franz Schubert’s Sonata in B-flat Major, D. 960 from a January 2016 recital at the National Gallery of Art. An avid long-distance and marathon runner, Ms. Weiss is also an active chamber musician and hosts a daily classical music podcast. Swiss pianist Olivier Cavé wraps up our June offerings on the 27th with a Phillips Collection recital featuring sonatas by Joseph Haydn and Domenico Scarlatti, ending with character pieces by Isaac Albéniz, heir to the “Spanish pianoforte school” begun by Scarlatti’s pupil, Antonio Soler.
