PBS NewsHour Wins a Peabody Award WETA Production Honored for Reports on Russia

PBS NEWSHOUR
ETA celebrates the bestowing of a George Foster Peabody Award on PBS NewHour for excellence in the News category for the 2017 series “Inside Putin’s Russia.” The award — honoring the most compelling and enlightening stories in television, radio and online media — was presented in a New York City ceremony on May 19. PBS NewsHour, a WETA production, received the award for the series of reports from Russia by special correspondent Nick Schifrin and producer/cameraman/editor Zach Fannin. Viewable now at pbs.org/newshour, the stories unearthed the roots of today’s Russia — why President Vladimir Putin remains popular, why the government acts the way it does, how its propaganda machine works, and where the conflict with the United States is likely to go. Produced in partnership with the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, “Inside Putin’s Russia” represented one of the most robust reporting efforts in recent Nick Schifrin, PBS NewsHour memory from Russia by an American television program. Schifrin and Fannin spent months foreign affairs and defense planning, organizing, filming and editing the series, including seven weeks in Russia, traveling correspondent to more than a dozen cities and conducting 40 interviews. They were detained by Russian police twice. Schifrin and Fannin’s efforts were supported by producers Roman Stepanovych, Morgan Till, Patti Parson and James Blue; creative director Adam Sarraf; and executive producer and WETA senior vice president Sara Just. “We are so honored by the Peabody Awards’ recognition of this work,” said Just. “At the NewsHour, and with our partners at the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, we are committed to shining a light and trying to help our audiences understand the world’s most complex issues — like the influence, power and priorities of Russia and Vladimir Putin.”

n Masterpiece Mystery! Shaun Evans returns for a fifth season of the popular series Endeavour as the young police detective Endeavour Morse, alongside Roger Allam as Detective Inspector Fred Thursday. The new six-episode series features more crimesolving in 1960s Oxford, picking up the narrative in early 1968 during the creation of Thames Valley Constabulary, which is combining city and county police resources. The future of Morse’s Cowley police station is in question, as is the future of members of the investigative team there. Meanwhile, Joan has returned and Morse encounters her around town; DI Thursday is considering retirement; and simmering unrest in the Oxford underworld comes to boil. In the opening episode, “Muse,” Morse investigates cases as he struggles to mentor a subordinate assigned to him. Funding for Masterpiece on PBS is provided by Viking and Farmers Insurance® with additional support from public television viewers and contributors to The Masterpiece Trust.

A
star-studded adaptation of one of Agatha Christie’s most famous mystery novels, And Then There Were None, is set in 1939 as Europe teeters on the brink of war. The three-part miniseries follows 10 strangers, all with hidden pasts, who are drawn together by a mysterious invitation to an isolated island manor off the coast of England. When they arrive, their hosts fail to appear, and, as members of the party start to mysteriously die one by one, the others realize that a killer is among them, marking each murder according to the nursery rhyme “10 Little Soldier Boys.” Soon only a few souls remain and, though escape is impossible and trust is in short supply, they must band together to survive. The thriller features Aidan Turner, Sam Neill, Charles Dance, Miranda Richardson, Anna Maxwell Martin and Toby Stephens.

n his first serious dramatic role, Rowan Atkinson (of comedies Mr. Bean and Blackadder) stars as novelist Georges Simenon’s legendary French detective Maigret in gripping crime stories set in 1950s Paris. The double feature airing June 28, 8-11 p.m., presents two cases. In “Maigret Sets a Trap,” a serial killer is stalking the streets of the seedy Montmartre district: five are dead and people are afraid to go out after dark. The newspapers are rife with speculation, and Chief Superintendent Maigret is without a lead and under enormous pressure to crack the case. He must risk everything — his career, his reputation and even others’ lives — to find the culprit. The second episode, “Maigret’s Dead Man,” focuses on the murder of a gambler with connections to a brutal gang from Czechoslovakia whose members are robbing and killing wealthy Parisians.

n 1997, the members of Fleetwood Mac — Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood, Christine McVie, John McVie and Stevie Nicks — reunited to commemorate the 20th anniversary of their phenomenally successful 1977 album Rumours. The program Fleetwood Mac–The Dance, filmed over three nights in an intimate setting at a sound stage in Los Angeles, features the band performing songs that have since become among the best known in rock history, including “Don’t Stop,” “The Chain,” “Go Your Own Way,” “Dreams” and “You Make Loving Fun” as well as other favorites such as “Rhiannon,” “Say You Love Me,” “Sara” and “Tusk.” Fleetwood Mac originally formed as a blues band in 1967, but came to worldwide prominence in 1975 with their eponymous album Fleetwood Mac. With the release of Rumours, the group achieved unparalleled success: the record became one of the best-selling albums of all-time, remaining at #1 on the Billboard album charts for 31 consecutive weeks and receiving a Grammy Award for Album of the Year. The program repeats Tuesday, June 5 at 8 p.m. and Friday, June 8 at 10:30 p.m.

igraine is one of the least understood and most mysterious chronic diseases. Everyone at one time or another has had a bad headache, but for the 36 million Americans who have experienced a debilitating migraine, the affliction changes everything. The new science-based special The Migraine Solution unravels the mystery and debunks the myths surrounding the disorder, weaving together information from leading experts, interviews with patients, and medical animations that show the challenge of managing a migraine experience. The program travels from laboratories at Stanford University to New York City to the Mayo Clinic to meet leading scientists and researchers who are working to further understand the complex inner workings of migraine and how best to treat this very complex neurological disease with no easy answers. One leading voice is Mayo’s Dr. David Dodick, who shares a set of “best practices” recommended by top experts in migraine research. The program repeats Thursday, June 7 at 8 p.m. and Monday, June 11 at 10 p.m.

or more than 50 years, crooner Perry Como ranked as one of America’s most successful and beloved entertainers. Starting as a big band singer in the late 1930s, and becoming a radio star in the 1940s and a TV headliner in the 1950s and onward, Como was a warm and welcome presence in tens of millions of households for six decades, charting more than 100 hit songs along the way. Such classic records as “It’s Impossible,” “Catch a Falling Star,” “Some Enchanted Evening,” “Magic Moments,” “Round & Round,” “Home for the Holidays,” “And I Love You So,” “No Other Love,” “Hot Diggity,” “Till the End of Time” and dozens more made Perry Como the second most popular male singer of the 20th century on the record charts, behind Bing Crosby. Como was a television staple for over 40 years, and this My Music special presents a collection of the singer’s biggest hits from long-lost and newly restored episodes of his programs. Peter Marshall and Nick Clooney host the show, which also features warm remembrances from celebrities such as Carol Burnett, Kay Ballard, Regis Philbin, Jay Leno, Leonard Maltin, Richard Carpenter, Debbie Boone and others. The program repeats Sunday, June 3 at 3:30 p.m. and Monday, June 4 at 8 p.m.

he rich history of America’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) began before the end of slavery, flourished in the 20th century, and profoundly influenced the course of the nation — yet remains largely unknown. This latest documentary from Stanley Nelson (Black Panthers and Freedom Riders) explores the story of the rise, influence and evolution of HBCUs. A haven for black intellectuals, artists and revolutionaries — and a path of promise toward the American dream — HBCUs have educated the architects of freedom movements and cultivated leaders in every field for more than 150 years. These institutions have nurtured some of the most influential Americans of our time, from Booker T. Washington to Martin Luther King, Jr., W.E.B. Du Bois to Ralph Ellison, Toni Morrison to Oprah Winfrey, Alice Walker to Spike Lee. A key driver of black social, political and economic progress, HBCUs were also a place of unprecedented freedom for African American students and a refuge from the rampant racism that raged outside campus walls.

et against the desert sands, looming cliffs and baking heat of Egypt’s Valley of the Kings, a four-part drama miniseries, spread over two decades, relates the true story of archaeologist Howard Carter’s epic quest to discover the lost tomb of the famed pharaoh Tutankhamun. Max Irons (son of actor Jeremy Irons) stars in the adventure, which airs in its entirety on June 21, from 8 p.m. to midnight. Carter finds evidence of the boy-king’s undiscovered tomb right at the heart of the valley. Other archaeologists dismiss his theories as impossible — the area, they say, has been dug out. Only one man believes in Carter’s mission and puts up the money he needs: dashing British aristocrat Lord Carnarvon (Sam Neill), a born gambler, thrill-seeker and enthusiastic amateur archaeologist. Together, this unlikely pair from very different classes and backgrounds overcomes all odds — corrupt officials and rival digs, world war and revolution — in pursuit of their goal. It seems as if nothing can come between them until Carter’s relationship with Carnarvon’s daughter, Lady Evelyn (Amy Wren), tests the friendship to the limit.

he baking competition that has grown into a beloved international phenomenon returns for a fifth series this month, featuring the original cast of formidable judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood and hosts (plus emotional support and comic relief) Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc in a 10-episode season that has never before been seen in the U.S. Once again, 12 of Britain’s best amateur bakers don their aprons, enter the iconic tent and tackle culinary trials that increase in difficulty as the competition unfolds. Vying to be crowned star baker, challengers prepare three creations in each episode: a signature bake, which tests their creative flair and baking ability; the devilishly difficult technical challenge, in which contestants must bake creations using only ingredient lists and minimal instruction; and finally, the showstopper, designed to showcase fully each baker’s skill and creativity. Series 5, which starts with two episodes on June 22, features new contestants attempting some of the series’ most difficult challenges, from bagels to strudel, treacle tarts to choux gateaus.

Tuesdays at 10 p.m. starting June 12 on WETA UK
ommissioned for 2016 to coincide with William Shakespeare’s 400th death anniversary, this gag-packed sitcom about the Bard’s fictional early life comes from the quill of BAFTA Awardwinning writer Ben Elton (Blackadder). David Mitchell stars as Will in his youth. Looked down upon by the literary establishment, the Bard is under pressure to churn out more work. Adding to his woes, he is undermined by his snooty rival Robert Greene, and his badly behaved parents are living in his house. Young Shakespeare feels that he is a great playwright in the making, if only he could catch a break. Packed with sparkling wordplay, Upstart Crow — airing in six parts as Season I — pays comic tribute to the greatest writer of the English language and reveals some surprising stories about where his best ideas came from.

ed by BAFTA and Golden Globe award-winning actress Brenda Blethyn, the crime drama Vera follows the investigations of the unorthodox but brilliant police sleuth DCI Vera Stanhope. In this newest, 2018 Vera series — Season VIII — based on the bestselling Inspector Stanhope novels by 2017 CWA Diamond Dagger recipient Ann Cleeves, the detective and her team are drawn into four more compelling cases: the body of a police officer discovered in an abattoir incinerator, a mysterious car crash, a suburban back-garden murder and the circumstances that led to the death of a teenage boy. Set around Newcastle and filmed in the stunning Northumberland countryside, Vera features complex and intriguing cases, atmospherically shot landscapes and engaging performances.

n this three-part crime drama, Anna Maxwell-Martin stars as an outspoken, down-to-earth single mother, Merrily Watkins, who also happens to be a Church of England county vicar. Her bishop has total faith in her, so much so that he has offered Watkins the position of exorcist — plunging her into a dark and dangerous world in this series with a supernatural twist. Deeply human in her doubts and skepticism, Merrily reluctantly agrees to assist when police discover a body crucified in the woods. But as Merrily — and her family — are drawn further into the mystery, she must summon all her strength to fight the evil she uncovers amid a web of murder, abuse, power and lies. Based on the Merrily Watkins novels by Phil Rickman, the series is adapted by BAFTA-winning screenwriter Stephen Volk.
Meet the Lords
olitical stand-offs and class conflicts meld in this revealing documentary about life and reform inside the illustrious House of Lords in the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Inside the institution’s gilded halls, rebellious peers attempt to derail the government, aristocrats fight to defend their birthright, and staff dressed in tights and wigs struggle to steer this extraordinary institution into the 21st century. Meet the Lords provides an insider’s glimpse into a world of bizarre rules and age-old traditions, in which staff carry swords and peers still dress in erminetrimmed red robes for grand ceremonies. Tensions build as the Lords face off with the government, the public and each other. What lies in store for the House of Lords? Will reformists succeed in overhauling the system or will the traditionalists win out?

Starring Golden Globe Award-winning Best Supporting Actress Jacqueline Bisset, in Dancing on the Edge it’s the height of the Jazz Age and one group of black musicians is poised to take London by storm. As the band grows in popularity and starts to mix with the upper classes, the intoxicating combination of music, money and parties pulls the characters into a glamorous but perilous world. Soon the band begins to feel immune from the prejudice hovering beneath the surface of society, but the sudden death of one of the band members creates a catastrophic turn in their fortunes. NEAL STREET PRODUCTIONS 2018
ETA UK reprises Welsh noir police drama Hinterland, set in the scenic, centuries-old town of Aberystwyth, Wales, a place where history, myth and tradition come face to face with modern life — and panoramic vistas and quaint facades hide a multitude of sins. Into this insular realm steps the enigmatic outsider DCI Tom Mathias (Richard Harrington, of Poldark), a brilliant but troubled sleuth on the run from his past. Together with his very capable and complex partner, hometown girl DI Mared Rhys (Mali Harries, of Foyle’s War), Mathias tackles murder cases from the windswept Welsh coastline to the badlands and beyond.

his month’s NSO Showcase salutes the principals of the National Symphony Orchestra. We’ll remember Loren Kitt, who passed away last September, after a 46-year career as NSO Principal Clarinetist. This supremely elegant artist will be featured in Mozart’s sublime Clarinet Concerto, from a Kennedy Center performance recorded in April 2015 with Vassily Sinaisky conducting. Concertmaster Nurit Bar-Josef will star in two French works, Chausson’s Poème and Massenet’s Méditation from Thaïs. Bar-Josef was appointed Concertmaster — the leader of the first violin section and the instrument-playing leader of the orchestra — of the NSO Principal Harp National Symphony Orchestra in 2001 (then the youngest such appointee to a major U.S. Adriana Horne orchestra) by Leonard Slatkin. A frequent soloist and chamber musician, she currently plays on a G.B. Guadagnini, 1773, the “ex-Grumiaux, ex-Silverstein.” Principal Harpist Adriana Horne learned an important lesson early in her career. As she tells it, she was hired to play background music outdoors for a stargazing party. “As it got later into the evening it became freezing cold and very windy. The wind blowing through the harp strings made an extremely eerie howling that drowned out any music I was trying to play, so I finally gave up and let the wind play the harp...the wind is a better harpist than I am!” On NSO Showcase, she’ll team up with guest violinist Ray Chen for Max Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy, recorded in the warmth of the Kennedy Center Concert Hall in March 2016. For the grand finale, we’ll shine the spotlight on Principal Trombonist Craig Mulcahy for Christopher Rouse’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Trombone Concerto. “What is more fun than a trombone concerto?”, asks the Washington Post. “The trombone generally doesn’t get enough time center stage, or enough respect for its urbane, mellow, golden sound, though it tends to make quite an impact when it does get a turn to come forward.” From the searing beauty of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto, to the delicacy of the Méditation from Thaïs, to the rousing Trombone Concerto, this month’s NSO Showcase is a well-deserved tribute to the orchestra’s extraordinary artists. udy Woodruff and the PBS NewsHour team are an indispensable part of every evening in our home. Increasingly, we Americans live in information silos, listening only to those ideas that support our own. PBS NewsHour challenges us to consider other perspectives and points of view, delivering balanced reporting that improves our citizenship. We would support WETA solely for the NewsHour and Washington Week; but besides excellent news reporting we are supporting diverse programming ranging from British television series to Ken Burns’ and Rick Steves’ specials, and exceptional children’s and arts programming as well. WETA can count on our annual contributions now and later through our estate plan. Thank you, WETA.” — Monte and Bob Campbell Join other loyal WETA supporters who want to keep quality public television and radio programming on the air for future generations.
