his month, WETA presents a wide array of special television programming as part of our summer membership campaign, through which we solicit support from the public to sustain our broadcasts, productions and services in Greater Washington. Among June offerings is the engaging new WETA production Roadmap to Happiness with Gretchen Rubin, which presents meaningful advice from the nationally recognized personal health expert. Our many other specials feature concerts, lifestyle wisdom, travel tips, local history and more — in addition to a reprised complete airing of the WETA co-production Reconstruction: America After the Civil War, an acclaimed major history documentary from WETA friend and partner, scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Also enjoy stellar dramas this month, which include new seasons of popular Masterpiece series Endeavour and Australian comic drama The Heart Guy. We additionally feature a selection of programs marking LGBTQ Pride Month — and an intriguing new natural history program. When Whales Walked: Journeys in Deep Time (details below) is the product of a PBS/Smithsonian partnership and companion to a new exhibition opening in early June at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. Enjoy all that WETA has to offer in June, and thank you for your support.

new two-hour natural history program created in a first-ever partnership between PBS and Smithsonian Channel features top scientists on a global quest to unlock the evolutionary secrets of four iconic creatures: crocodiles, birds, whales and elephants. The June broadcast of When Whales Walked is timed to the opening of the new Deep Time Hall at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. Actor Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy) narrates the film, which offers surprising insights as it travels from Abu Dhabi to Argentina and Kenya to China to trace the origin stories of the spotlighted creatures. The program investigates clues from the fossil record and employs 21st-century technology, including 3D graphics and CGI, to bring the animals’ ancient ancestors to life. When Whales Walked contains startling revelations about those ancestors. One early crocodile relative was built like a greyhound; ancient whales really did walk on four legs; and the earliest ancestor of the elephant was the size of a rabbit. Birds arose from feathered dinosaurs — in fact, they are dinosaurs — and went on to colonize the natural world as well as the urban spaces created by humans. But the end of the story has yet to be written, and the film sounds an alarm about the dangers each of these survivors faces. Major funding for When Whales Walked: Journeys in Deep Time is provided by The National Science Foundation and The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations.

haun Evans (below) sports a new look as DS Endeavour Morse, embracing the fashion of the period in his grooming, in a new season of the Masterpiece detective drama Endeavour, the prequel to the long-running Inspector Morse series. In the four new episodes, set in 1969, Endeavour faces new challenges, having started a new role as a uniformed officer at the Woodstock police department. Alongside Evans — who puts his directorial mark on the show, heading behind the camera to lead the second episode (June 23) — the new series sees Roger Allam return as DI Fred Thursday, alongside Anton Lesser as CS Reginald Bright, Sean Rigby as DS Jim Strange, James Bradshaw as Dr. Max DeBryn, Sara Vickers as Joan Thursday, Abigail Thaw as Dorothea Frazil and Caroline O’Neill as Win Thursday. Following the dissolution of the Oxford City Police and the merging with Thames Valley Constabulary at the end of the last series, the new series picks up with the team members dispersed and finding their feet in various new roles. Despite their separation, the murder of DC George Fancy still hangs over them, with the case remaining unresolved. In another Masterpiece presentation this month, WETA reprises Grantchester, Series 1 at 7 p.m. on Sundays starting June 23, starring James Norton as charismatic clergyman Sidney Chambers, who sleuths with Robson Green’s Geordie Keating in the 1950s English village. New episodes of Grantchester — Series 4 — will premiere in July, with Norton making his final appearance before the introduction of a new vicar.

odger Corser reprises his role as a star heart surgeon fallen from grace in a new season of drama The Heart Guy (aka Doctor Doctor in country of origin Australia). In Series 1, high-flying medico Hugh Knight was laid low by his hedonism and sense of infallibility. Disciplined by a medical tribunal, he must serve a year-long probation as country general practitioner in his rural hometown of Whyhope, where his eccentric family and ex-girlfriend (now married to his brother) complicate his life. In Series 2, as the sand slowly runs out on Hugh’s probation, he is determined to live out the remainder of his service in peace. However, his departed colleague Penny, for whom he had feelings, decides to return to the hospital — and much to Hugh’s displeasure, she is followed by an ex-army medic who took a fancy to her in Sydney. Other relationships in town are also tested and one leads to a proposal. Meanwhile, the grueling and divisive local election campaign is finally over and uncounted votes lead to an investigation; and difficult health news for a family member clouds the picture. And so with an election scandal, a transplant operation looming and a possible wedding on the horizon, the Knight family must decide whether their struggles will bring them closer together, or tear them apart.

est-selling author, podcast host and happiness expert Gretchen Rubin offers insights and strategies to create a happier life in a new WETA production premiering June 3 and repeating throughout the month. An influential thinker, Rubin — whose work is being presented to television audiences for the first time in this special — reaches millions of followers through a variety of digital and social platforms. In Roadmap to Happiness, she explores the pursuit of happiness, presenting research demonstrating that happier people are healthier, live longer, are more active in their communities, and are more successful. Everyone wants to be happy, but where does one start? Joined in the program by her sister and podcast co-host, Elizabeth Craft (at right), Rubin explains how small steps, taken consistently, can add up to greater contentment. But this doesn’t just happen; first one must recognize one’s own personality type. By using Rubin’s Four Tendencies framework to learn whether one is an Upholder, Questioner, Obliger or Rebel, viewers can incorporate the happiness-boosting habits that can make life happier, healthier and more productive. A digital interactive feature on Rubin’s framework, available at pbs.org/gretchenrubin, can aid users in identifying their personality profile. Gretchen Rubin is the author of several New York Times bestsellers, including The Happiness Project, The Four Tendencies and Better Than Before. Rubin’s books have sold more than 3.5 million copies worldwide, in more than 35 languages. She is a member of Oprah’s SuperSoul 100 and co-host of the award-winning podcast, Happier with Gretchen Rubin, along with her sister Elizabeth Craft, a Hollywood TV writer.

o one could have guessed on October 8, 1985, when Les Misérables opened in London at the Barbican Theatre that it would become a global phenomenon, but audiences embraced it from the start, creating a “people’s musical” that played in 42 countries and has been seen by more than 60 million people. The musical celebrated its 25th birthday in 2010, and to mark the occasion, producer Cameron Mackintosh staged an extraordinary concert at the O2 Arena in London that premiered on public television in 2011 — and WETA reprises this month. With more than 500 actors and musicians — including leading British tenor Alfie Boe (heading the cast, at right, as Jean Valjean), Jenny Galloway, Katie Hall, Nick Jonas, Norm Lewis, Matt Lucas, Lea Salonga, Samantha Barks and Ramin Karimloo — Les Misérables 25th Anniversary Concert at the O2 includes the 2010 cast of the long-running original production at London’s Queen’s Theatre and members of the original 1985 London cast, including Colm Wilkinson. This special concert was also shown in cinemas worldwide. Based on Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel of the same name and set in early 19th-century France, Les Misérables features the stories of individuals struggling for redemption and revolution. The magnificent score includes the songs “I Dreamed a Dream,” “On My Own,” “Stars,” “Bring Him Home,” “Do You Hear the People Sing?,” “One Day More,” “Empty Chairs at Empty Tables,” “Master of the House” and many more. The program repeats at 8 p.m. on June 5 and 13.

new, locally focused WETA TV 26 history documentary presents a nostalgic look at past Independence Day celebrations in Greater Washington. The film joins the WETA portfolio of local productions created exclusively for television viewers in the national capital area, following in the tradition of the three-part documentary series Discovering Alexandria and the recent film Discovering Washington: Through the Lens, which explored distinctive historical sites of the region. More than two years in the making, Discovering Washington: The 4th of July spotlights Greater Washington’s annual Fourth of July observances — exploring how they have been marked through the years. From 19th-century presidential observations of the holiday, to a closer look at the Declaration of Independence housed at the National Archives, to the local festivities that attract families and visitors from around the world, the film underscores Greater Washington’s enthusiasm for Independence Day. Discovering Washington: The 4th of July features footage from National Mall Fourth of July celebrations and historical insights from an array of local experts. Classical WETA 90.9 FM on-air host Linda Carducci narrates the program.

n a special broadcast of the critically acclaimed documentary film that premiered nationwide in April, WETA production partner and Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., presents the definitive history of one of the least-understood chapters in American history — the transformative years following the American Civil War, when the nation struggled to rebuild itself in the face of profound loss, massive destruction and revolutionary social change. The two-part WETA co-production Reconstruction: America After the Civil War airs June 2 in its entirety, exploring the United States’ emergence from the war and slavery into the years known as Reconstruction, and how the legacy of Henry Louis Gates, Jr. that hopeful era and its rollback has reverberated in race relations in American society ever since. The issues central to that era — citizenship, voting rights, violence, the relationship between economic and political democracy — continue to roil the country today. “Our film tells the real story of Reconstruction, honoring the struggle of the African Americans who fought their way out of slavery and challenged the nation to live up to the founding ideals of democracy, freedom and equality,” said Gates, the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor at Harvard University and director of the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research. “But we will also tell the tragic story of the sustained and often violent pushback against Reconstruction’s determination to secure equal rights for black people — and the subsequent rise of white supremacy leading to the implementation of Jim Crow segregation.” Corporate support for Reconstruction: America After the Civil War is provided by Johnson & Johnson. Major funding is also provided by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation; the Ford Foundation; The Gilder Foundation; Lloyd Carney Foundation; Dr. Georgette Bennett and Dr. Leonard Polonsky CBE; the Corporation for Public Broadcasting; and PBS.

new hour-long documentary tells the little-known story of a decades-long campaign by the federal government to identify and fire employees suspected of being gay or lesbian. With the United States gripped in the panic of the 1950s Cold War, President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1953 deemed homosexuals to be “security risks” and vowed to remove them from federal service. Tens of thousands of government workers would lose their jobs for no reason other than their sexual orientation. But the mass firings had an unintended effect: they stirred outrage in the gay community, helped ignite a civil rights campaign and thrust an unlikely hero into the forefront of the LGBTQ rights movement. In 1957, a Harvard-trained astronomer named Frank Kameny became the first person to fight his dismissal; and his attempts to regain his job evolved into a lifelong battle for civil rights. Based partly on the award-winning book by David K. Johnson, The Lavender Scare explores Kameny’s fight for justice. Glenn Close narrates.

Based on Ann Cleeves’ novels, the programs follow the disheveled sleuth in fictional Northumberland as she probes intriguing murder cases. In Blind Spot, Vera follows the trail of a murdered trainee forensic psychologist. In Cuckoo, a teenage boy is found murdered far away from his home in a coastal town. In Cold River, the life of a woman found dead in the River Tyne presents a complex mystery. And in The Seagull, Vera opens up a cold case when a skeleton is discovered in Whitley Bay. In Series 5, Perez and his team — including DS Alison “Tosh” Macintosh (Alison O’Donnell) and DC Sandy Wilson (Steven Robertson) — must investigate discoveries of body parts washing ashore on a Shetland beach, their connection to a modern slave-trafficking ring, related crimes and tragedies in the local community, and the disappearance of an identified Nigerian victim’s sister that sparks a missing persons search. In eight episodes, The Bletchley Circle: San Francisco follows team members Millie Harcourt (Rachael Stirling), conversant in a host of languages, worldly and street smart, and Jean McBrian (Julie Graham), former head of the Bletchley Park codebreaking group, as they operate in the USA. The story begins in 1942 with a colleague’s murder and fast-forwards 14 years to when the duo learns of killings in America with identical characteristics. was absolutely convinced as a child. When people asked me ‘what would you like to be?’, I said, ‘I would like to be a singer and a conductor.’ And they said, ‘oh, so strange, this little girl.’ I had to wait until there was a kind of a wave in the world that we might accept that some women would be conductors because when I attended the [conducting] class I was fifteen. I never got the baton because I was a woman. It was not the time and I knew I would never make it in this world. It’s still very hard, Conductor/contralto but there is a movement, there is a way that we are more accepted and if you are Nathalie Stutzmann good you can make it. I’m happy to take the challenge and to always be the first one somewhere.” Renowned contralto Nathalie Stutzmann is realizing her lifelong dream of being a world-class conductor. June’s NSO Showcase will feature Maestra Stutzmann in both her contralto and conductor roles as she leads the National Symphony Orchestra in Dvořák’s 7th Symphony and sings Mahler’s Rückert-Lieder, which she says offers “a moment of peace, with no outside ‘bing-bong.’” The program also includes Slovak conductor Juraj Valčuha leading the NSO in Dvořák’s musical exploration of the dark side of passion, the Othello Overture, and NSO principal Aaron Goldman in Mozart’s Flute Concerto No.2, conducted by Christoph Eschenbach. June’s NSO Showcase highlights composers Dvořák and Mozart, and artists Stutzmann and Goldman — all of whom will be featured at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall in June. Maestra Stutzmann will conduct the NSO, Goldman and additional soloist Adriana Horne in Mozart’s Flute and Harp Concerto as part of the NSO’s Mozart Forever Festival, and audiences at both the Kennedy Center and The Anthem will enjoy performances of Dvořák’s New World Symphony. horal music shines each week on Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s Choral Showcase, and we’ll open the month on June 2 with a perennial favorite: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Requiem. Laurence Equilbey directs her vocal group, Accentus, in their first recording with the Insula Orchestra. We’ll The Wedding Dance in the Open Air, follow with John Sheppard’s luminous motet, Media Vitae (“In the Midst of by Peter Bruegel the Elder, circa 1566 Life”) featuring Matthew Robinson and The Thirteen Chamber Choir from Washington, a highlight from their recording, Radiant Dark. June is also the favored month for weddings, and we’ll have four on June 9. Igor Stravinsky’s vocal ballet, Les Noces, or “The Wedding,” begins the celebration in a lively, rustic peasant style; Ralph Vaughan Williams’s wedding song, Epithalamion, is a rare, ethereal cantata based on the bridal ode written by Edmund Spenser; “The Court of Love” from Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana adds a lusty note; and John Rutter’s Wedding Canticle from Psalm 128 brings a serene and joy-filled close. On June 16, Te Deum, the Latin hymn of praise, is celebrated by powerful works from Antonin Dvořák, Charles Hubert H. Parry and Dominic Argento. And we’ll finish this month’s Choral Showcase with selections from a few new recordings. On June 23, Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 2, Lobgesang, “Hymn of Praise,” comes from Sir John Eliot Gardiner’s set of Mendelssohn Symphonies with the London Symphony Orchestra on LSO Live. Ludwig van Beethoven’s Mass in C Major, with Mariss Jansons and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra on BR Klassik, is coupled with the austere Mass for Five Voices by William Byrd on June 30. That performance is by the Ora Singers under Suzi Digby, from Upheld by Stillness, the first of their growing series of recordings on Harmonia Mundi. his month on Front Row Washington, we explore a variety of music from the solo piano to a work — inspired by a 1980’s toy — that features the violin, alto saxophone, marimba and piano. Each concert this month comes from the Phillips Collection. On June 3 it’s the Pavel Haas Quartet, which Gramophone has called “the world’s most exciting string quartet.” Their performance includes Bohuslav Martinů’s String Pavel Haas Quartet Quartet No. 7 and Bedřich Smetana’s String Quartet No. 2. Trio Solisti performs a beautifully executed concert of Schubert, Dvořák and Brahms on June 10. The New Yorker has described the ensemble as “probably the finest American piano trio currently on the field.” Then, on June 17, pianist Alessio Bax returns to Front Row Washington. He starts his Phillips Collection recital with J.S. Bach’s arrangement for solo keyboard of Alessandro Marcello’s Oboe Concerto in D minor. Bach was adept at recognizing genius and rearranging music for different situations. The extravagantly ornamented Adagio likely influenced many slow movements of Bach’s own compositions. Later in the program Bax performs a homage to Bach by Luigi Dallapiccola, his Musical Notebook of Annalibera. The June 24 program features a Phillips Collection spotlight on Israeli composer Avner Dorman, who earned a doctorate in composition at Juilliard. Dorman was the youngest composer to win Israel’s Prime Minister’s award — at the age of 25. His music has been performed by orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic and the San Francisco Symphony. In this concert we hear some of his chamber music works, including Udacrep Akubrad, a work for percussion that combines musical traditions of the Middle East and the West, and Memory Games, which was inspired by the 1980’s light-up memory game, Simon. It uses patterns and rounds to recreate the feeling of the game, and this arrangement was made for this performance so that the musicians would all play together (violin, alto saxophone, marimba and piano).

n June, Classical WETA Opera House is pleased to once again feature productions from Wolf Trap Opera, presenting two performances recorded live from its 2018 summer season. Mozart’s first mature opera, Idomeneo, airs Saturday, June 1. Written on commission by the Elector of Bavaria for a court carnival, Idomeneo is based on Antoine Danchet’s retelling of the legend of Idomeneo, King of Crete, who must accept the tragic consequences of a vow he made to Neptune for safe passage during a terrible storm. In the opera, Mozart melds French and Italian operatic elements, ballet, special effects and stirring choral moments. Together with Giambattista Varesco’s poetic lyrics, Idomeneo rises to dramatic opera seria. Wolf Trap Opera’s production features soprano Madison Leonard — winner of the 2018 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions — in the role of Princess Ilia, a young woman caught between love and loyalty. Ian Koziara stars in the title role, and Geoffrey McDonald conducts. The following Saturday, June 8, we feature a broadcast of Charles Gounod’s Romeo et Juliette, a luscious, romantic take on Shakespeare’s tragic play of ill-fated love between members of rival families. Gounod’s version — which premiered in 1867 — is set to a French libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré. The passionate love between Romeo and Juliet is artfully enveloped in a series of tender love duets, and there are other notable musical moments, including Juliette’s exuberant “waltz song” and a dramatic fight scene. Soprano Madison Leonard and tenor Alexander McKissick sing the lead roles; and Eric Melear conducts. Join me for Classical WETA Opera House each Saturday at 1 p.m. Additional June operas are Cleveland Orchestra performances of Richard Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos (June 15) and Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde (June 22). Closing out the month is Rameau’s Le Temple de la Gloire (June 29) by the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and Chorale.
