The WETA presentation airs Tuesday, March 22 at 8 p.m. on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD

ews and Baseball: An American Love Story, a film by Clear Lake Historical Productions in association with WETA, explores the connection between Jewish Americans and baseball, America’s most iconic institution. The film relates the stories of Jewish ballplayers such as Sandy Koufax — who granted a rare interview for this legacy project — and Hank Greenberg, Al Rosen and many others. More than a program about sports, it is a story of immigration, assimilation, bigotry, heroism, the passing on of traditions, and the shattering of stereotypes. Dustin Hoffman narrates, and interviews include writers, executives, and players such as Koufax, Rosen, Kevin Youkilis, Shawn Green, Bob Feller and Yogi Berra. Fans Ron Howard and Larry King speak of the meaning of Jewish ballplayers in their lives, while historians and rabbis place the stories of Jewish players in historical context, interwoven with an extraordinary collection of rare archival footage and photos. Major funding for Jews and Baseball: An American Love Story is provided by The Jewish Federations of North America; The Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation; The Apotex Foundation, Honey and Barry Sherman; Charles and Andrea Bronfman Foundation; Elise and Alan Mecklinger; Greenberg Philanthropic Fund; and Fran and Ed Sonshine. Additional funding was provided by David Heller, the Samuel Goldberg & Sons Foundation, Inc. and the generous support of many foundations and individuals; for a full list, visit jewsandbaseball.com.

he Emmy Award-winning children’s television series Curious George is designed to inspire kids to explore science, math and engineering in the world around them in a fun and entertaining way. Based on the best-selling Curious George books by Margret and H.A. Rey, the series expands the world of the insatiably inquisitive little monkey — and that of his friend, The Man with the Yellow Hat — to include a host of colorful characters and original locales, while maintaining the charm of the beloved books. Each of the half-hour episodes includes two animated stories followed by short live-action pieces showing real kids who are investigating the ideas that George introduces in his stories. The series encourages inquiry and curiosity, promotes hands-on exploration, and shows parents and caregivers how to support children’s science and math- related play. Note: You’ll also find children’s programming on WETA TV 26 each morning, 5 a.m.–noon. See the inside cover for WETA TV 26 channel numbers.

WETA Celebrates Bach

une in to Classical WETA 90.9 FM for Bach Month, a celebration of the birth anniversary of the great composer, who was born March 21, 1685. Each week in March, Classical WETA highlights a particular genre of Bach’s instrumental music. On WETA’s classical vocal music service, VivaLaVoce — available at vivalavoce.org — in addition to the major choral works such as the B Minor Mass and the Passions, scheduled for broadcast are all of the more than 200 surviving cantatas by Bach. He composed about 23 secular cantatas for civic occasions and more than 300 sacred cantatas (many lost), which he wrote and performed to supplement readings on Sundays and holidays at Lutheran church services in Leipzig. At the center of Classical WETA’s “CantataFest” is the recently completed and highly acclaimed set of recordings of the sacred cantatas featuring the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists led by John Eliot Gardiner. VivaLaVoce airs approximately seven cantatas each day. Schedule details will be available at vivalavoce.org by March 1.

Choral Showcase in March

O

Sundays at 9 p.m.

n Sunday, March 6, Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s program Choral Showcase kicks off the month with the B minor Mass, an excellent starting-point for Classical WETA’s month-long Bach celebration. Martin Pearlman conducts. On March 13, the program features a Mass compilation, beginning with the Offertory from Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s first (of 11!) settings of the Mass. Although this first Charpentier Mass uses a small ensemble of only two treble instruments plus continuo with the small chorus, it is a work of strong feeling. Also on the broadcast is the fifth of Franz Schubert’s six Masses. While the first four were written for church performance, the final two were composed for the concert hall. Last on March 13 is Vivaldi’s expressive, dense Kyrie, RV 587, which, although part of the Mass, was not written by Vivaldi to be part of a full mass setting by him. The spring equinox is March 20, and Choral Showcase celebrates with messages of love. Gustav Holst’s “Cloud Messenger” is precisely that. An exiled poet from central India sends greetings of love to his wife in the Himalaya Mountains. The message is carried by a cloud, which whispers into the ear of the poet’s sleeping wife. Sir Arthur Bliss’s “Lie Strewn the White Flocks,” is also about communications of love, but this time, of the unrequited sort — Echo’s Saturdays on Classical WETA 90.9 FM lack of interest in Pan. From Bliss’s Pastoral are scheduled “Pan and Echo,” “The Naïads’ Music,” “The Pigeon Song,” March 5, 1 p.m.: Rossini’s Armida and “The Song of the Reapers.” Both the Bliss and Holst are March 12, noon: Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov conducted by Richard Hickox, who died in 2008 but left a March 19, 1 p.m.: Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor rich recorded legacy of English choral works. March 26, 1 p.m.: Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades

A professor of piano at American University, Gorenman has been called a “pianist without fear.” A 1995 prizewinner at the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition in Belgium, her performance style is a unique blend of Russian and American technique, a result of her training at the St. Petersburg Conservatory in the former Soviet Union, then piano studies at both the San Francisco and Peabody conservatories. Her all-Rachmaninoff recital at the Phillips Collection includes several Études-tableaux from Op. 39, various preludes from Opus 23, and the Sonata No. 2, Op. 36.
