ast year, WETA proudly joined in locally on a nationwide initiative conceived and supported by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen, aimed at addressing the destructive high school dropout crisis facing America. This month, we are pleased to air the broadcast centerpiece of the American Graduate initiative, the important documentary film 180 Days: A Year Inside an American High School, which starkly illustrates the challenges faced by students and educators at a Washington, D.C. high school against the backdrop of ongoing national debate on education reform. Beyond our educational broadcasts, we take very seriously our responsibility for engagement in, and with, our community, evidenced by the substantial new media resources we create for parents and educators; our literacy trainings; ongoing educational outreach surrounding our strong portfolio of children’s programs; and our important partnerships with local civic and governmental organizations through initiatives such as American Graduate. Thank you for supporting these efforts, and all of WETA’s educational services to the public, with your membership.

In Memoriam
WETA mourns the passing in January of a former chairman of the WETA Board of Trustees, Ambassador Max Kampelman, a prominent Washington attorney and distinguished U.S. diplomat. Max was also an early moderator of WETA public affairs series Washington Week in Review (now Washington Week with Gwen Ifill), which premiered in 1967. We extend our condolences to the Kampelman family.

two-part documentary film, framed by complex and layered national and local politics, presents an intimate portrait of life for the first graduating class of Washington Metropolitan High School (DC Met), a public high school serving at-risk students in Anacostia. 180 Days: A Year Inside an American High School, produced by the National Black Programming Consortium, chronicles the experience of several students — and the teachers, administrators and parents struggling to keep them on track to graduation through myriad challenging circumstances. The film is the principal broadcast component of American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen, a public media initiative that is supported by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and helps communities understand — and implement solutions to address — the current nationwide high school dropout crisis. WETA is a participant in the project, helping to spotlight issues related to the crisis and partnering with local youth development and community organizations, business groups, public schools, advocacy groups and others to implement solutions in Greater Washington. Among its contributions to the local American Graduate initiative, WETA has developed an extensive online volunteer database. Visit the WETA-created site AmericanGraduateDC.org to learn more. Funding for 180 Days: A Year Inside an American High School is provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting — American Graduate Initiative, D&I Fund and The Ford Foundation.

mmy-winning actor Jeremy Piven stars as the upstart American who revolutionized the English shopping experience, in Mr. Selfridge, a sumptuous new eight-part Masterpiece Classic series created by Emmy Award-winning writer Andrew Davies and inspired by the biography “Shopping, Seduction & Mr. Selfridge” by Lindy Woodhead. Piven portrays Harry Gordon Selfridge, father of the renowned London department store that opened in 1909. Fancy window displays, cosmetics counters, touchable merchandise and other marketing breakthroughs sprang from the genius of Chicago native Selfridge, who combined guile, taste, boldness, the poise of a swindler, and the charm of a Casanova to create success — and considerable trouble. The cast includes Katherine Kelly as Lady Mae; Zoe Tapper as Ellen Love, showgirl, temptress, and the “face of Selfridge”; Frances O’Connor (Madame Bovary) as Harry’s loyal but independent wife, Rose; and Aisling Loftus as spunky shop girl Agnes Towler.

n this ingeniously subtle parody of documentary-making, spoof BBC interviewer Roy Mallard (Chris Langham) goes around the U.K. to talk to ordinary folk. Mallard has little or no skill as an interviewer: he is over-earnest and, after most of his voice-overs, you realize there’s something slightly odd about what he has said. He is apt to talk nonsense and is so sufficiently unattractive that there’s a running joke that nobody can believe he’s married. But viewers never catch a glimpse of him: in a TV first, the central character of this comic program is always off camera.
Scott & Bailey
A
airs Mondays at 9 p.m. on WETA UK
Cagney & Lacey-like BBC crime drama follows the personal and professional lives of two female Manchester Metropolitan Police detectives and friends: down-to-earth, argumentative, single Detective Constable Rachel Bailey (Suranne Jones) and Detective Constable Janet Scott (Lesley Sharp, of Cranford), a diplomat and a thinker, a wife, and a mother to two teenage girls. Each episode sees Bailey and Scott face a serious crime that is challenging and emotionally difficult, as well as cope with their own complex personal lives. Rupert Graves co-stars.

George Gently
A
airs Mondays at 10 p.m., beginning March 11 on WETA UK
ward-winning actor Martin Shaw (of Cranford and cast as P.D. James’ detective Dalgliesh on Masterpiece Mystery!) stars as Inspector George Gently — an incorruptible, uncompromising cop transplanted from London’s Scotland Yard to England’s North Country in the mid-1960s. Gently’s reputation for honesty and relentlessness makes him almost as feared among his colleagues as he is among criminals. But he finds an odd ally in John Bacchus (Lee Ingleby), an overeager young sergeant who plays fast and loose with police procedures. Based on novels by Alan Hunter, these feature-length mysteries unfold against the backdrop of rural Britain.

airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on WETA UK
eo McKern stars in the iconic role that helped make Masterpiece Mystery! a success in its first season in 1980 — as an aging, frumpy but steadfast London defense lawyer in the beloved, wry drama series created and written by British barrister John Mortimer, whose character spawned a popular book series as well. A zealous defender of the principle of presumption of innocence, Rumpole defends any and all clients — often legal-aid cases — quoting Wordsworth and excelling at witness cross-examinations and verbal jousts with judges. Out of the courtroom, Rumpole must contend with his wife Hilda, whom he refers to as “She Who Must Be Obeyed.”

or a detective who can’t stand sun and sand, even paradise can be hell. Sent to the tiny fictional Caribbean island of Saint-Marie to solve a mysterious murder, Detective Inspector Richard Poole (Ben Miller) is a fish out of water in this comic crime series. A quintessentially British cop, Poole would much prefer the London drizzle and a freshly pressed shirt to blue seas, sparkling sands and gorgeous tropical weather. What Richard finds is a ramshackle station and a very different type of policing. His reward for cracking the case: a permanent posting; and while he may be stuck there, he tries to bring British rigor to the relaxed island workplace. Sara Martins co-stars.

n her review of pianist Alessio Bax’s recital at Dumbarton Oaks Museum last November, Washington Post music critic Cecilia Porter wrote that in performing five Rachmaninoff Preludes, Bax “missed none of the music’s fury with commanding finger-work, careful pedaling and the tolling resonance of Russian bells.” Classical WETA 90.9 FM Monday-night broadcast Front Row Washington presents this stirring performance March 18 at 9 p.m. — a solo recital that also Alessio Bax includes five Ballades by Johannes Brahms, and Brahms’ wickedly difficult Variations on a Theme by Paganini in A Minor, Op. 35, Book I. Front Row Washington broadcasts begin the month on March 4 at the Phillips Collection, with Russian violinist Andrey Baranov and pianist Maria Baranova. Winner of the 2012 Queen Elisabeth Competition, Andrey Baranov performs towering works of the repertoire, including Prokoviev’s Sonata in D Major, Op. 94, No. 2; Sérénade mélancolique and Valse-Scherzo by Tchaikovsky; and Franck’s Sonata for violin and piano, considered one of the finest works ever written for the violin. Front Row Washington is supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

he monthly Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s broadcast NSO Showcase, featuring concert performances by the National Symphony Orchestra, presents an American love story on Wednesday, March 6 at 9 p.m. with Neruda Songs by American composer Peter Lieberson. The NSO Showcase performance features American mezzo-soprano Kelly O’Connor, who worked directly with Peter Lieberson on interpreting Neruda Songs. This broadcast also features Wagner’s Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde, and Richard Strauss’ Till Eulenspiegel’s lustige Streiche, led by NSO Music Director Christoph Eschenbach. Rounding out the program is the transcendent Adagio from Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 10, led by Finnish conductor Susanna Mälkki.
