WETA Focus I

n March, WETA presents a wide variety of special programs as part of our spring membership campaign, a time when we raise vital funds in support of our many services to the public. Among our offerings this month are an array of engaging music, lifestyle and travel programs, in addition to two notable new specials that spotlight WETA production partners — our good friends Ken Burns and Henry Louis “Skip” Gates, Jr. A Conversation with Ken Burns features an extended interview with Ken about his stellar career in film; and Henry Louis Gates, Jr.: Uncovering America celebrates Skip Gates’ extraordinary work as a scholar, filmmaker and author. In April, we look forward to the premiere of a fascinating new film project from Skip and WETA, Reconstruction: America After the Civil War, on WETA TV 26/HD and PBS stations nationwide. Stay tuned as well for Ken’s next major series, Country Music, a co-production with WETA that rolls out nationwide in September. Learn about these and other upcoming WETA projects below this column. Enjoy our entertaining March specials, and thank you for your support.

Coming Soon from WETA!

ETA and its production partners produce superb programs for national and local audiences, creating engaging productions that illuminate America’s collective history and celebrate our diverse culture. In coming months, exciting new programs are slated to air. On April 9 and 16, an absorbing new four-hour historical documentary, Reconstruction: America After the Civil War, from scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and WETA, premieres nationwide. Gates presents the definitive story of the transformative years following the American Civil War, when the nation struggled to rebuild itself amidst profound loss, massive destruction and revolutionary social change. On April 29, another informative new WETA history documentary, Korea: The Never-Ending War, confronts the myth of the “Forgotten War,” exploring the conflict, its global consequences and its legacy. Then, on May 3, the annual WETA co-production The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song celebrates the extraordinary career in music of Emilio and Gloria Estefan with an all-star concert. The Estefans are the first married couple or musicianssongwriters of Hispanic descent to receive the honor. The performance will include José Feliciano, Il Volo and Cyndi Lauper among other artists; Rita Moreno and Andy Garcia host. Also in May, WETA will premiere a new installment in its portfolio of “decades” history specials spotlighting the Washington area. Created exclusively for local viewers, Washington in the 2000s will revisit major events, people and developments in the new millennium, from the 9/11 attacks and the Beltway sniper to the return of Major League Baseball and the District’s new wave of revitalization. In the fall, watch for the latest major production from WETA’s decades-long collaboration with Ken Burns. This year, WETA and Florentine Films will proudly premiere nationwide the documentary series Country Music beginning September 15. The epic new 16-hour production chronicles the history of this American art form, exploring how country music evolved through the 20th century. The series features never-before-seen footage and photographs — and interviews with more than 80 musical artists.

he popular drama Call the Midwife returns this month with a new eightepisode season, featuring more stories from the nurses and nuns of Nonnatus House convent, which serves the East End London neighborhood of Poplar. At the start of Season 8, it is spring of 1964. With the additions of two new Sisters, Nonnatus House feels full once more. The new episodes continue to explore complex medical and personal situations on the midwifery and district nursing rounds as the team faces issues including interracial adoption, cleft palate, sickle cell and more. And for one of the protagonists, romance could be on the horizon. New on Masterpiece in March is the drama Mrs. Wilson, starring Ruth Wilson (Luther) in the true-life story of her own grandmother Alison Wilson’s love and betrayal. In the storyline, a widowed woman confronts her husband’s past and true identity — was he a spy or a swindler? Major Alexander Wilson, an author of spy novels, did real intelligence work for Britain during World War II. In marrying him, Alison entered a plot as tangled as one of Alec’s fictions. Iain Glen portrays the glamorous, seductive operative in the mold of a debonair James Bond; co-starring are Keeley Hawes, Fiona Shaw and Anupam Kher.

ith exclusive access to The Prince of Wales in his 70th birthday year, the BBC documentary film Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70 follows the British heir to the throne over the course of a year, both at work and behind the scenes, at home and abroad. Filmmaker John Bridcut (Elizabeth at 90 – A Family Tribute) also interviews those who know Charles best: his wife The Duchess of Cornwall, and his sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. Prince Charles’s 70th birthday marked half a century of his involvement in public affairs. In the film, the longest-serving heir to the throne discusses his ongoing charitable work and looks ahead to his future role as monarch. Following the documentary, WETA reprises King Charles III on Masterpiece, starring Tim Pigott-Smith (The Jewel in the Crown) in the television adaptation of the 2016 hit Broadway play that imagines Prince Charles’ ascension to the throne following Queen Elizabeth’s death.

EVAN BARLOW

n a March special, award-winning documentary filmmaker Ken Burns, a longtime WETA production partner, sits down to discuss his work as a historian, storyteller and curator of uniquely American subjects. Guided by journalist Don Shelby, Burns looks back on his early childhood experiences and influences that led him to pursue a career as a filmmaker. He shares anecdotes about notable personalities he’s worked with, stories gleaned from his research, and some memorable moments with people he’s interviewed in his nearly 40-year career. Since the Academy Award-nominated Brooklyn Bridge in 1981, he has created some of the most acclaimed historical documentaries ever made. Among his many co-productions with WETA are The Civil War; Baseball; Jazz; Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery; Frank Lloyd Wright; Mark Twain; Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson; The War; The National Parks: America’s Best Idea; The Roosevelts: An Intimate History; Jackie Robinson; and The Vietnam War. His major new film Country Music premieres September 15. A Conversation with Ken Burns repeats March 6 at 9:30 p.m. and March 8 at 8:30 p.m.

His award-winning programs — including WETA co-productions Africa’s Great Civilizations, Finding Your Roots and Black America Since MLK: And Still I Rise — have helped history come alive for tens of millions of people, often telling surprising and unexpected stories of our collective heritage. Rick Steves’ European Easter

aking a spring journey through Spain, Slovenia, Italy and Greece, Rick Steves experiences Easter holiday traditions in a variety of cultures. Ancient rituals of woolly beasts scaring away winter in Slovenia and elegant, masked Carnival parties in Venice are a prelude to the austerity of Lent. A few weeks later, Palm Sunday crowds fill St. Peter’s Square in Rome, and the streets of Sevilla are packed as the Passion of Christ unfolds day by day through Holy Week. The despair of Good Friday gives way to Easter Sunday, when joy of the Resurrection fills family gatherings, small-town festivals and churches all across Europe. The program repeats March 3 at 10:30 p.m. and March 20 at 9:30 p.m.

March Highlights on WETA TV 26/HD Koko—The Gorilla Who Talks documentary film harkens back to 1971, when Project Koko started as Penny Patterson’s Ph.D. assignment to teach sign language to a baby gorilla. As Koko began to communicate with Penny, an intense bond formed between them and the teacher transformed into both mother figure and companion for more than four decades, while the public’s fascination with Koko made the gorilla a star. Koko’s life was filmed every step of the way. More than 2,000 hours of footage exist, capturing the dramatic moments, many of which appear in this program, including Patterson’s battle to keep Koko from being reclaimed by the zoo where she was born, Patterson’s clash with academic critics who doubted the validity of her claims, the establishment of The Gorilla Foundation, and the image of Koko mourning the death of her kitten — a moment that brought her international fame. In June 2018, Koko died in her sleep, but this film stands as a remarkable testament to her abilities and relationships. The program repeats March 6 at 8 p.m.

he landmark documentary series Women, War & Peace returns in Season 2 with stories of women’s role in dramatic conflicts and peace settlements around the globe. The original series Women, War & Peace premiered in 2011. Season 2 demonstrates how some of the biggest international stories of conflict, human rights struggles, and peace-making are shaped by women. An all-female set of directors presents four stories about women who risked their lives for peace, changing history in the process. Wave Goodbye to Dinosaurs (March 25) spotlights an all-female political party in Northern Ireland; The Trials of Spring (March 25) relates the story of three Egyptian women in the Arab Spring who fight for the goals of the popular movement: bread, freedom and social justice; Naila and the Uprising (March 26) follows a non-violent women’s movement in the Palestinian struggle for freedom; and A Journey of a Thousand Miles: Peacekeepers (March 26) follows one of the world’s few all-female peacekeeping units, as Bangladeshi women embark on a 2011 UN peacekeeping mission to Haiti.

rom London’s Donmar Warehouse, Great Performances presents an acclaimed all-female production of Julius Caesar, Shakespeare’s famous discourse on power, loyalty and tragic idealism, in this production set inside a women’s prison. The play offers a powerful dramatization of the catastrophic consequences of a political leader’s extension of power beyond constitutional confines — through an all-female lens. Phyllida Lloyd (The Iron Lady, Mamma Mia!) directed the production. The cast stars Tony Award-nominee Harriet Walter (Sense and Sensibility, Mary Stuart) as Brutus; Jackie Clune (Borderline) as Caesar; Martina Laird (EastEnders) as Cassius; and Jade Anouka as Mark Antony, among an ensemble cast. The women play male inmates and guards: Brutus wrestles with his moral conscience over the assassination of Julius Caesar, and Mark Antony manipulates the crowd with subtle and incendiary rhetoric to create frenzied mob violence. Performed in-the-round and enhanced by a guerilla filming style, the program creates a unique perspective on the Bard’s tragedy. Major funding for Great Performances is provided by The Robert Cornell Memorial Foundation, the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Arts Fund, the Irene Diamond Fund, Rosalind P. Walter, the LuEsther T. Mertz Charitable Trust, The Agnes Varis Trust, The Starr Foundation, the Kate W. Cassidy Foundation, The Phillip and Janice Levin Foundation, Ellen and James S. WETA UK March Highlights The Secret Agent

Saturdays at 9 p.m. starting March 16 on WETA UK

n engaging three-part BBC adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s 19th-century novel of espionage, anarchism, terrorism and repercussion stars Golden Globe nominee Toby Jones (The Hunger Games, Sherlock) as Anton Verloc, an unassuming Soho shopkeeper with a hidden life. Unbeknownst even to his loyal wife, Winnie (Vicky McClure, Line of Duty, Broadchurch), Verloc also works for the Russian embassy as a spy. Wishing to spur the London authorities into action against a group of local anarchists, his employers blackmail him into undertaking a mission: plant a bomb at the Greenwich Observatory to paint the anarchist group — rivals — as an organization sponsoring terrorism. Verloc abhors the idea of killing civilians, but if he fails, his identity as a spy will be exposed.

ETA UK features two literature adaptations on Friday nights in March. First, on March 1, is Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey. In the author’s gentle parody of gothic fiction, Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything) plays romance addict Catherine Morland. Invited to a medieval country house that appeals to her most lurid fantasies, she forms a close friendship with the younger son on the estate, Henry Tilney, but their budding romance is mysteriously cut short. Then, in a two-part presentation of Wuthering Heights (above), March 8 and 15, the fiery romance of Heathcliff and Cathy reignites in this adaptation of Emily Brontë’s classic love story. Set against the stark beauty of the English moor, the mysterious gypsy boy Heathcliff, adopted by the Earnshaw family, discovers his soulmate in his stepsister, Cathy. But as a man unable to have the love of his life, he seeks vengeance against anyone who comes between them. The adaptation stars Tom Hardy (The Revenant) as Heathcliff and Charlotte Riley (In the Heart of the Sea, Peaky Blinders) as the heroine Cathy. Andrew Lincoln (Love Actually, The Walking Dead) co-stars as Edgar.

olitical stand-offs and class conflicts meld in this revealing documentary about life and reform inside the illustrious House of Lords in the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Inside the institution’s gilded halls, rebellious peers attempt to derail the government, aristocrats fight to defend their birthright, and staff dressed in tights and wigs struggle to steer this extraordinary institution into the 21st century. Meet the Lords provides an insider’s glimpse into a world of bizarre rules and age-old traditions, in which staff carry swords and peers still dress in ermine-trimmed red robes for grand ceremonies. Tensions build as the Lords face off with the government, the public and each other. What lies in store for the House of Lords? Will reformists succeed in overhauling the system or will the traditionalists win out?

The Mekong River with Sue Perkins n a four-part BBC miniseries, comedian-traveler Sue Perkins takes an epic journey up one of the world’s greatest rivers, traveling through Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and China to explore a region undergoing unprecedented change. The programs follow Perkins as she explores social and environmental issues, finds the lighter side of life on the Mekong, and meets the river’s idiosyncratic characters. The Mekong is Southeast Asia’s largest river, flowing through 3,000 miles of breathtaking landscapes: the high peaks of the Himalayas, the Tibetan plateau, the canyons of Chinese Yunnan, and Vietnam’s vast Mekong Delta. With her genial charm, Perkins brings to life the river’s compelling stories, encountering incredible natural phenomena along the way and presenting her insights with humor, warmth and respect.

t his mysterious country windmill, illusionist Jonathan Creek (comedian-actor Alan Davies) devises spectacular stage stunts for a magician — and employs his extraordinary skills to crack baffling murder mysteries on the side. A new TV crime series recruits Jonathan’s talents and he is reunited with his ex-girlfriend and old sparring partner, Carla Borrego (Julia Sawalha; Absolutely Fabulous, Lark Rise to Candleford). Carla is a determined amateur detective, though she has no intention of playing Watson to this disheveled, laid-back Sherlock. In the six episodes of Series 4, the pair tackles the curious case of a policewoman who has been strangled to death inside an empty gym; the mystery of a girl whose hair was seemingly shorn by a kidnapper; the instance of a ghost hunter trying to communicate with his lover after a fatal boat accident; and more. Jonathan Creek repeats Thursdays at 10:30 p.m.

Wednesdays at 10 p.m. starting March 6 on WETA UK

n acclaimed Masterpiece series stars Mark Rylance as Thomas Cromwell — the brilliant, enigmatic consigliere to England’s King Henry VIII — who maneuvers within the treacherous Tudor court in the six-part drama Wolf Hall, based on Hilary Mantel’s Booker Prize-winning novels. The series follows Cromwell as he navigates the moral complexities that accompany the exercise of power. Damian Lewis (The Forsyte Saga; Homeland) portrays the king, haunted by his brother’s premature death and obsessed with protecting the Tudor dynasty by securing his succession with a male heir to the throne. The star-studded cast includes Claire Foy (Little Dorrit; The Crown) as future queen Anne Boleyn; Anton Lesser (Endeavour); Mark Gatiss (Sherlock); and Jonathan Pryce (Cranford). BAFTA Award-winner Peter Kosminsky directs the production, adapted by Oscar nominee Peter Straughan (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy).

McEwan played Marple in productions from 2004 to 2009 until retiring, and then McKenzie stepped in and took on the role through the completion of productions in 2013. In Nemesis, the sleuth receives a communication from a recently deceased millionaire, asking her to look into a crime. In Ordeal by Innocence, Marple must uncover the jealousies behind a family’s façade. Towards Zero explores Marple’s investigation into the death of a friend. Friday, March 22 at 9 p.m. on WETA UK

90-minute murder mystery drama is set during the London Blitz of World War II. Patrick Kennedy (Boardwalk Empire, Parade’s End) portrays Dr. Lennox Collins, a passionate and brilliant Home Office pathologist at the cutting edge of forensic science who, undertaking his first murder case, investigates serial killings while the German Luftwaffe bombs Britain’s capital. When young women are found murdered, Collins and his newly recruited reporter-turned-secretary, Molly Cooper (Tamzin Merchant; Jane Eyre, The Tudors), clash with the police over just who the main suspect is. Employing groundbreaking forensic techniques, Lennox and Molly try to save a seemingly innocent man from the gallows and prove that there may be more to these murders than meets the eye. he next day in the city jail we were searched for drugs.” This quotation from 20th-century activist Dorothy Day opens John Adams’ Passion oratorio, The Gospel According to the Other Mary, the featured work in this month’s NSO Showcase program. Peter Sellars’ libretto uses texts from the Old and New Testaments, as well as modern writings by Day, Rosario Castellanos, Rubén Dario, Louise Erdrich, Hildegard von Bingen, June Jordan and Primo Levi. “It’s a work about women, justice, and the passion of Christ,” says Adams. “I felt that Jesus Composer John Adams spent his whole adult life among the homeless — our society’s castaways — the people we might give a dollar to but we don’t want to deal with.” Inspired by the life of Dorothy Day, The Gospel According to the Other Mary recounts Jesus’ final days from the viewpoint of Mary Magdalene and her siblings, Martha and Lazarus. Modernday social themes of police brutality and intolerance are interwoven with the biblical story. When the National Symphony Orchestra performed the D.C. premiere of the work in celebration of Adams’ 70th birthday, The Washington Post declared “Noseda, NSO prove to have ‘Gospel’ truth.” The Post went on to congratulate Gianandrea Noseda for undertaking such a compelling work in his first season as music director: “it was an impressive, dramatic and passionate performance from the new director of the NSO.” The program starred mezzosoprano Kelley O’Connor as Mary, mezzo-soprano Tamara Mumford as Martha and tenor Zach Borichevsky as Lazarus. A trio of countertenors, Daniel Bubeck, Brian Cummings and Nathan Medley, joined the University of Maryland Concert Choir and the orchestra. The National Symphony Orchestra continues to present significant new music this season, as part of this month’s DIRECT CURRENT festival at the Kennedy Center. This two-week celebration of contemporary culture will feature two NSO programs led by Teddy Abrams, including a work by Kennedy Center composer-in-residence Mason Bates, Philip Glass’s Itaipu and the world premiere of Lera Auerbach’s ARCTICA. ©CHRISTINE ALICINO

ANTOINE AUGUSTE-ERNEST HERBERT

lassical WETA weekly broadcast Choral Showcase features sacred music and song this month, beginning March 3 with Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostom with the Corydon Singers under Matthew Best. Composed in 1910, Rachmaninoff’s first large unaccompanied choral work honors an early Christian saint and writer. Considered too modernistic for the Eastern Orthodox Church at that time, and thus not as celebrated as the All-Night Vigil, it’s still a terrific work and will be performed by the Cathedral Choral Society March 17 at National Cathedral. We’ll present settings of the penitential prayer, Miserere (“Have The Harpist by A. Herbert mercy”) on March 10. Gregorio Allegri’s famous setting, composed exclusively for the Sistine Chapel, became more widely known after Mozart heard a performance and wrote it down from memory. Henryk Górecki’s Miserere, a powerfully moving work, was written for the nascent Solidarity movement in Poland in 1980. On St Patrick’s Day, March 17, we’ll have a Cór Oiche (“choral evening”) of Irish Song and Chant: Irish folk songs sung by Celtic Ayres and the RTE Children’s Choir, plus 10th-century medieval chant and piping in praise of St Columba, an Irish saint who founded a monastery on the island of Iona and spread Christianity from Ireland to Scotland. March 24 brings Four Sacred Pieces by Giuseppe Verdi with the Chorus and Orchestra of the National Academy of St Cecilia under Antonio Pappano, and Igor Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus led by Georg Solti. On March 31, we feature music from the Reformation: two hymns by Martin Luther, followed by works based on those hymns: the motet Warum ist das Licht gegeben by Brahms, and Bach’s Cantata No. 80, Ein Feste Burg ist Unser Gott. From the Renaissance, we present The Great Service by English composer Thomas Tomkins. Join me for Choral Showcase, Sundays at 9 p.m.

rom solo piano to the full symphony orchestra, there is a wide variety of concerts and something for everyone this month on the Classical WETA weekly broadcast Front Row Washington. Starting on March 4, we listen to a Phillips Collection concert featuring violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaya, and pianist Polina Leschenko. It’s a virtuosic and wild program of Poulenc, Bartók, Enescu and Ravel with an encore that you won’t want to miss! On March 11 we present the Schumann Quartet in a Phillips Collection concert performance of quartets written in memoriam by Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky. The Quartet starts with Joseph Haydn (known as the father of the string quartet), however, and plays his Sunrise quartet, featuring a beautiful introduction that evokes daybreak. Our March 18 program is a solo piano concert — a recent performance from the Phillips Collection. Henrik Måwe plays music in the first half by Jean-Philippe Rameau, Philip Glass and Frédéric Chopin. The second half is called Nordic Impressions, with music by Nordic composers Wilhelm Stennhamer and Jean Sibelius, in addition to 21st-century works by Anders Hilborg and Albert Schnelzer. Our final program for the month, March 25, presents a performance by the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra. Founded in 1954, the orchestra has established a reputation for thematic and inter-arts programming that features a mix of classical and contemporary music. World-renowned composer Jessica Krash, a Washington, D.C. native, collaborated with cellist Tanya Anisimova (a friend and musical partner for more than 20 years) and the orchestra in premiering her Cello Concerto. Starting with the opening movement, Krash gives some insight about her new work: “The beginning is like a forest, where you can hear things that you can’t see. The cello enters, calling. This becomes an allegro, moving into the daylight.” She describes the March-scherzo movement as a “twinkle in the eye,” and in the last moments of the finale, “There emerges a bit of the cello ‘calling’ from the opening, and this time the unseen voices in the woods call to us too, parting words, as the cello becomes air.” The second half of the concert features an expectedly energetic rendition of Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony. Join me every Monday evening at 9 p.m. on Classical WETA 90.9 FM for Front Row Washington.
