or the past five centuries, more people have been influenced by Western food, clothing, medicine, religion and government worldwide than by any other civilization. How did that happen? What led the West to be so influential and powerful? And how long will the West sustain its supremacy? In a two-part documentary, author Niall Ferguson explores the rise of the West’s economic ascendancy and why Eastern civilizations may now be taking the lead. Comparing civilizations ancient and modern, Ferguson embarks on a global expedition to 11 countries, from the Forbidden City in Beijing to Buckingham Palace in London, identifying six principles of prosperity: competition, science, modern medicine, democracy, consumerism and work ethic — and exploring them in historical context. The programs are adapted from Ferguson’s book, Civilization: The West and the Rest.

The Best in Mystery F

or decades, WETA TV 26 has presented some of the finest drama productions on television, adaptations of great literature featuring themes of love and loss, fortunes and ruin, and of course, that other most entertaining and timeless of dramatic endeavors — mystery. Among WETA’s many broadcasts, the absorbing plots of the mystery and crime drama genre have proven exceptionally popular, especially when paired with a British accent and period costume or intriguing setting. An extraordinary parade of crimesolvers has appeared on WETA’s air to match wits with evildoers, especially since 1980. That was the year that Masterpiece Theatre rolled out sister series Mystery! (since 2008 folded into Masterpiece), which remains among the most successful series on PBS.

Rumpole

For more than 30 years, Mystery! has brought to life great sleuths from the pantheon of classic and contemporary British novels by the likes of Agatha Christie, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Colin Dexter, P.D. James and others.

Superb Drama on Mystery! The popularity of 1970s Masterpiece Theatre adaptations of Dorothy Sayers mysteries featuring dapper British detective Lord Peter Wimsey helped launch Mystery!, which tapped the rich offerings of classic and contemporary British mystery literature. Heralded by the cartoons of Edward Gorey with the program’s opening and closing credits, and hosted first by Gene Shalit (first season only) before Vincent Price (1981–1989) and then Dame Diana Rigg (1989–2003), the series launched on February 5, 1980 with the eccentric mystery spoof She Fell Among Thieves. Among the offerings of the first season that helped clinch Mystery!’s success was the whimsical courtroom series Rumpole of the Bailey, written by John Mortimer, who had adapted Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited. Since those early days, the series has brought a truly remarkable array of adaptations to American audiences.

Popular Productions Among many stellar Mystery! productions, several series stand out, creating great memories for WETA viewers: • Rumpole of the Bailey (1980–1995), with Leo McKern; • The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1984–1996), with Jeremy Brett; • Dalgliesh (1985–2006), starring Roy Marsden, and later, Martin Shaw; • Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple (2005–present), with Geraldine McEwan, and recently, Julia McKenzie (first Miss Marple with Joan Hicksen, 1985–1989); • Inspector Morse (1987–2001), with John Thaw and Kevin Whately; • Agatha Christie’s Poirot (1989–present), starring David Suchet; • Prime Suspect (1991–2006, partly on Masterpiece Theatre), starring Helen Mirren; • Cadfael (1994–1999), with Derek Jacobi; • Hetty Wainthropp Investigates (1997–2003), starring Patricia Routledge; • Touching Evil (1998–2001), starring Robson Green and Nicola Walker; • The Inspector Lynley Mysteries (2001–2007), with Nathaniel Parker and Sharon Small; • Foyle’s War (2004–present), with Michael Kitchen; • and Inspector Lewis (2006–present), with Kevin Whately and Laurence Fox.

Other Memorable Sleuths Of course, there are many other highly regarded Mystery! programs and characters. Longtime viewers will remember Peter Davison in Campion; Michael Gambon as French sleuth Maigret; Trevor Eve in Heat of the Sun, set in colonial Kenya; and Helen Baxendale as P.D. James’s detective Cordelia Gray in An Unsuitable Job for a Woman. Clive Owen played a detective losing his vision in Second Sight; Diana Rigg starred in The Mrs. Bradley Mysteries; and Wes Studi and Adam Beach portrayed Navajo sleuths in American Mystery! specials based on Tony Hillerman stories. his month, Masterpiece Mystery! presents exciting new adaptations in the acclaimed series Sherlock, which updates Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous stories to contemporary London. In the new episodes — Scandal in Belgravia, The Hounds of Baskerville and The Reichenbach Fall — Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson continue to battle the worst that modern criminality has to offer, including a computer-savvy arch-villain, Moriarty, who wants to rule the world. Benedict Cumberbatch (War Horse, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) returns as the world’s most famous consulting detective, with Martin Freeman (The Hobbit) as Dr. Watson and Andrew Scott as Moriarty. Funding for Masterpiece is provided by Viking River Cruises, with additional support from public television viewers and contributors to The Masterpiece Trust.

Wallander, with Kenneth Branagh; Zen, with Rufus Sewell; and Sherlock (above). WETA Television presents other crime dramas as well, acquiring for Washington-area viewers special acquisitions such as Waking the Dead; Life on Mars and sequel Ashes to Ashes; Hustle; Silent Witness and other engaging U.K. series. And there’s much more on the way.

More to Come More top-notch Masterpiece Mystery! episodes are in store for WETA TV 26 and WETA HD viewers, including, this summer, an Inspector Morse prequel, Endeavor. But even more British drama awaits. On June 2, WETA will launch an exciting new ancillary channel, WETA UK, that will air around the clock, seven days a week, and will feature exclusively British offerings, including classic mysteries such as Prime Suspect, Sherlock Holmes and Foyle’s War and contemporary U.K. drama and comedy series that will become new favorites. For the finest in mystery programming on television, tune in to WETA TV 26 and WETA HD on Sunday and Thursday nights — and watch for WETA UK on June 2.

reated by Craig Bartlett, Dinosaur Train is an animated series produced by the Jim Henson Company for three- to six-year-olds. Set in a whimsically realistic, prehistoric world of jungles, swamps, active volcanoes, and oceans, the show features a curious T-rex named Buddy. Together with his adoptive Pteranodon family, Buddy takes the dinosaur train to meet, explore and have adventures with all kinds of dinosaurs, encouraging young viewers at home to make observations and comparisons about their own world and foster a lifelong interest in learning. This month, WETA Kids features a one-hour Dinosaur Train special: “Dinosaurs A-Z.” The special includes two new episodes in which all the dinosaurs in the “Dinosaurs A-Z” song gather for a picnic at Troodon Town. The special premieres Monday, May 14, at 10:30 a.m. and repeats on Saturday, May 19 at 12:30 p.m. and on Saturday, May 26 at 2 p.m. Note: You’ll also find children’s programming on WETA TV 26: WEEKDAYS ON WETA TV 26
