urvey the month’s programming on WETA Television and Classical WETA 90.9 FM, and you will notice a wide array of programs created by your very own hometown public broadcasting station. Production is part of WETA’s DNA, and we are very proud of the programs that we share with the nation via PBS and those that we create exclusively for broadcast in Greater Washington. This month, among new WETA television productions rolling out is the 51st program in our long-running series In Performance at the White House, spotlighting Carole King and her music. Also in May, we once again co-produce the performance program National Memorial Day Concert, broadcast live from the U.S. Capitol grounds. We premiere as well an engaging new TV 26 production, Pizza in Washington, created especially for local viewers. May also heralds encore airings of the fascinating WETA co-productions Prohibition — a collaboration with Ken Burns and Lynn Novick — and MAKERS: Women Who Make America. Classical WETA too has much to offer, producing marvelous broadcasts of local recitals by world-class artists on Front Row Washington and superb concert performances by the National Symphony Orchestra on NSO Showcase amid our full schedule of sublime classical music programming. We are very excited to be able to create this engaging programming for viewers and listeners in our area and beyond, and your support helps make these productions possible. star-studded May concert hosted at the White House by President and Mrs. Obama honors singer-songwriter Carole King, the 2013 recipient of the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. President Obama will present the Gershwin Prize to King during the event. The concert will be taped at the White House this month and broadcast nationwide on PBS stations on May 28 as the program Carole King: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize In Performance at the White House, a production of WETA, the Library of Congress, Cappy Productions, Mark Krantz Productions and CoMedia. The WETA series In Performance at the White House has been produced since 1978 to showcase the rich fabric of American culture in the setting of the nation’s most famous home. WETA has spotlighted the awarding of the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song — named in honor of Ira and George Gershwin and awarded to recognize the profound, positive effect of popular music on the world’s culture — since its inception. Previous recipients are Paul Simon (2007); Stevie Wonder (2009); Sir Paul McCartney (2010); and the songwriting team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David (2012). Carole King has created 25 solo albums, and more than 400 of her compositions during a five-decade career have been recorded by more than 1,000 artists and resulted in 100 hit singles. Her 1971 album Tapestry is one of the bestselling records ever; it was the first female solo album to surpass 10 million copies sold. King is also the first woman to win four GRAMMY Awards in a single year (Best Album, Best Song, Best Record and Best Vocal Performance in 1972).

sk Americans to name their favorite foods and atop the list, invariably, is pizza. The tasty pies, which originated in Naples, Italy, come in many forms, associated with Chicago, New York, New Haven and other cities with glorious crust and sauce traditions. But what does the national capital area have to offer pizza aficionados? A new WETA TV 26 production sets out on a culinary voyage to find out, visiting a dozen of Greater Washington’s favorite pizza establishments. The half-hour program, Pizza in Washington, spotlights the community’s “pizza renaissance,” exploring dining options and meeting the chefs whose creations have customers coming back for more. Considering the pizza as a work of art, the canvas is four basic ingredients: flour, water, sugar and salt. With added toppings and the right oven, the pizza maker — or “pizzaiolo” — creates an edible masterpiece. Pizza in Washington spotlights local delights, from gourmet pies made with imported ingredients and cooked in wood-fired ovens, to classic thin-crust and deep-dish standbys — and even gluten-free specialties made from chickpea flour. The first stop on the tour is Falls Church’s Pizzeria Orso, where Chef Will Artley (below) serves classic Neapolitan pizzas, cooked in an oven that is the “heart and soul” of his restaurant. Among other popular pizza eateries spotlighted is longtime Washington fixture Armand’s Chicago Pizzeria, in business since the 1970s offering deep-dish, thick-crust pizza. Also on the bill are 2Amys in Northwest Washington and Arlington gem Pupatella, both certified “Verace Pizza Napoletana.” To learn what that means and to hear about other superb eateries, tune in to the program. Want to learn RACH EL WALISKO which food truck serves up terrific New Yorkstyle thin-crust pizza on the go? Or discover a great pizzeria that is a community institution in Bethesda? To learn which iconic College Park restaurant has been serving fresh pies for decades, and where one can find wonderful Neapolitan pizza in the District’s Brookland neighborhood? To discover which vintage pizza bistro features New York-style pies created in wood-fired brick ovens, and which Capitol Hill pizzeria offers a stunning variety of pies created by a celebrity chef? To find terrific New Haven-style pizza, with its distinctive crust? You’ll find out about all that and more on Pizza in Washington. Watch the program, learn what local pizzaiolos are creating, and be inspired to go out and sample a slice of life. Have a good pizza tip? Share your favorite pizza spot at weta.org/pizza.

fter 60 years in show business, Mel Brooks has earned more major awards than any other living entertainer; he is one of 14 E.G.O.T. (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony) winners. Showcasing the Brooklyn native’s brilliant, skewed originality, American Masters: Mel Brooks: Make a Noise, airing May 20, spotlights the comedy giant, who along with his friends and colleagues shares stories about his life and career. Interviewees include Brooks, Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane, Cloris Leachman, Carl Reiner, Joan Rivers and Tracey Ullman. The film journeys through Brooks’ early years in live television — with Sid Caesar on Your Show of Shows, to the film genres he satirized in Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, High Anxiety and Spaceballs — to the ground-breaking Broadway musical version of his first film, The Producers. Also airing on American Masters in May are profiles of Woody Allen (in two parts, May 6 and 13 at 10 p.m.) and Carol Burnett (May 20 at 10:30 p.m.). American Masters is made possible by the support of the National Endowment for the Arts and by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Additional funding is provided by Rosalind P. Walter, Cheryl and Philip Milstein Family, The Blanche & Irving Laurie Foundation, Rolf and Elizabeth Rosenthal, Jack Rudin, The André and Elizabeth Kertész Foundation, Michael & Helen Schaffer Foundation, and public television viewers. Mondays at 9 p.m.
here is something for everyone this month on Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s Monday, 9 p.m. broadcast Front Row Washington, featuring local performances by world-class artists. On May 6, the program presents Pro Musica Hebraica’s Kennedy Center concert featuring the Ariel Quartet with pianist Orion Weiss. The ensemble performs works by Erich Korngold, Arnold Schoenberg, Ernest Bloch, and Erwin Schulhoff — Jewish composers Orion Weiss who passed from the vibrant world of fin-de-siècle Vienna, Berlin and Paris into the heart of Europe’s twentieth-century terrors. The startlingly original — yet largely forgotten — works include quartets by Korngold and Schulhoff, and the Piano Quintet No.1 by Ernest Bloch. On May 13, the broadcast presents the Leipzig Quartet’s recital — at Candlelight Concert Society of Columbia, Maryland — of works old and new, including Brahms’ A minor Quartet, Op. 51, No. 2; Jorg Widmann’s Hunting Quartet; Philip Glass’ Quartet No. 2, Company; and Tan Dun’s Eight Colors for String Quartet. Front Row Washington on May 20 visits the Phillips Collection to hear 17-year-old pianist Anna Han perform the Washington, D.C. premiere of Avner Dorman’s Three Etudes, along with works by Bach, Scarlatti, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev and Franz Liszt, as well as finger-flying encores “Embraceable You,” “Flight of the Bumblebee,” and “I Got Rhythm.” On Monday, May 27, the broadcast features the first of two programs from the 25th Annual Fredericksburg Chamber Music Festival. Front Row Washington is supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

ne of mankind’s most pivotal moments is captured in John Adams’ opera, Dr. Atomic, which premiered in San Francisco in 2005. Two years later the composer created Dr. Atomic Symphony, developing themes that did not lend themselves to the operatic format. On the Wednesday, May 1, 9 p.m. broadcast of Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s program NSO Showcase, John Adams himself (right) conducts the National Symphony Orchestra in this harrowing work that explores the characters and events leading up to the first test of the nuclear bomb. Also on the program, Vasily Petrenko leads the orchestra in Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 4, a work conceived during Stalin’s reign of terror. In a change of mood, Juraj Valcuha conducts the charming Mother Goose Suite by Maurice Ravel.
