ur fundamental mission at WETA is to create and present high-quality programs in service to the community of Washington and the nation, so it was very exciting to learn that two WETA television projects recently earned one of the broadcast industry’s top honors: the distinguished George Foster Peabody Award. In April, it was announced that in recognition of their excellence in quality, Latino Americans and The Central Park Five are each 2013 Peabody Award winners. Produced by WETA, Bosch & Co., and Latino Public Broadcasting, in association with ITVS, the documentary series Latino Americans presented six fascinating installments tracing a people’s history that is older than the nation itself — and showed how Latinos are reshaping the United States. The Central Park Five, created by WETA partners Ken Burns, Sarah Burns and David McMahon, and a co-production of WETA and Florentine Films, reexamined the case of five black and Latino teenagers from Harlem who were railroaded and wrongly imprisoned in a high-profile criminal case. WETA is enormously proud to have brought these two important projects to the American public and hope you are as well, for your support helps make possible our productions and broadcasts. Thank you for your membership in WETA.

new three-part series produced by best-selling author and U.S. Army veteran Wes Moore tells the story of his search for answers to some of the most difficult questions facing veterans returning from war. Moore’s journey, spurred by the suicide of one of his oldest friends and a fellow officer, takes him into the personal lives of different soldiers as they attempt to reintegrate into society, establish new identities and — for many — find a new mission.“My hope is that the public can get a glimpse of what the end of the wars means to these brave men and women and to their families,” said Moore, who is a combat veteran. Each episode of the series focuses on a different stage of coming home: “Coming Back” (May 13), “Fitting In” (May 20) and “Moving Forward” (May 27). The series begins with Moore visiting Bonnie Collins, the mother of Moore’s friend and fellow officer, Brian Collins. Viewers learn that the previous year, after getting married and beginning a new career, Moore’s friend abruptly took his own life. This incident initiates Moore’s desire to learn more about why some veterans can get on with their lives, while some cannot. In the second episode, Moore explores the concept of identity, how it’s altered during deployment and how it’s altered again when a veteran returns home. The final episode examines veterans’ drive to find a new mission, to contribute, to be part of something bigger than themselves. Over the course of three episodes, Coming Back follows Moore into the lives of an array of service personnel, from Earl Johnson of Baltimore, MD; to Army National Guard Lieutenant Colonel and Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth of Schaumburg, IL; to Marine Sergeant Christopher Phelan (left) and his wife, Air Force Captain Star Lopez of Los Angeles, CA. Major corporate support for Coming Back with Wes Moore is provided by Bank of America. Funding is also provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s Diversity and Innovation Fund, which supports content that engages diverse viewers and encourages the use of emerging technologies to reach new audiences, and PBS.

ETA presents double features of dramatic mysteries each week, premiering episodes of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries (Mondays) and Midsomer Murders (Thursday nights, with the second episode repeating at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday evenings). Series II, airing this month, was just filmed in 2013. Long-running series Midsomer Murders, based on crime novels by English novelist and screenwriter Caroline Graham, stars John Nettles as detective Tom Barnaby and features homicide investigations set in a fictional rural county in England. On Thursday, May 22, WETA reprises the first two episodes of Series VII, in which Barnaby’s longtime deputy Sgt. Gavin Troy (Daniel Casey) departs and Sgt. Dan Scott (John Hopkins) joins the team.

n Saturday double features, WETA reprises the newest season — Series VI — of popular comic drama Doc Martin, featuring Martin Clunes as the brusque, blood-phobic general practitioner Dr. Martin Ellingham, who serves the quirky, picturesque hamlet of Portwenn on England’s Cornish coast. Caroline Catz portrays the physician’s girlfriend, Louisa Glasson, mother of his child and headmistress of the local primary school. In Series VI, the on-again, off-again couple appears to be finally ready for matrimony, and the eight episodes continue to explore the comic culture clash between the urbane doctor and his small-town clientele. There’s more to come for the Portwenn denizens, as a seventh series is slated to be filmed in 2015. For those who may have missed the first episodes of Doc Martin, Series VI on WETA TV 26 and WETA HD on April 26, this month WETA presents Series VI in its entirety on the WETA UK channel beginning Saturday, May 3 at 6:30 p.m.
On Nature, Beavers, Swarms and More

T
he series Nature presents intriguing explorations of the natural world as part of WETA’s weekly Wednesday-night science programming. On May 7, the series presents the dive of a lifetime off the Costa Rican coast in Shark Mountain. The May 14 program, Leave It to the Beavers, spotlights the industrious rodents’ remarkable skills as natural builders and brilliant hydroengineers — and explores how the creatures are now being recruited to help reverse the effects of global warming by reviving landscapes and damaged lands. On May 21, The Gathering Swarms looks at swarm intelligence in some of the planet’s great gatherings of creatures such as bats and bees, locust and ants, monarch butterflies, 17-year cicada hatches, grunion in the Sea of Cortez and carp in the Mississippi River, sardine runs off the coast of South Africa, super flocks of parakeets in the Australian Outback, July mayflies, and even penguins and wildebeest. On May 28, American Eagle wraps up the month’s Nature offerings with an exploration of the resurgence of the bald eagle. Support for Nature is provided in part by the Arnhold Family in memory of Clarisse Arnhold, the Lillian Goldman Charitable Trust, the Filomen M. D’Agostino Foundation, by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and by the nation’s public television stations.

lassical WETA 90.9 FM Monday night broadcast Front Row Washington kicks off the month, May 5 at 9 p.m. with a twist on the 3 B’s, featuring works by Beethoven, Brahms and Busoni. From their JCC of Greater Washington Rockville recital, violinist Chee-Yun and pianist Alessio Bax perform Beethoven’s Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 8 in G Major, Op. 30, No. 3; Ferruccio Busoni’s Violin Sonata No. 2 in Chee-Yun E minor, Op. 36a; and Brahms’ Sonata No. 3 in D minor, Op. 108. For the two weeks that follow, Front Row Washington presents highlights from last year’s 26th Annual Fredericksburg Chamber Music Festival. Classical WETA has broadcast performances from this engaging chamber music festival — which brings worldclass musicians to the historic town of Fredericksburg, Virginia, for three nights of concerts — since the event’s inception over two decades ago. Our program Monday, May 12 opens with four lovely settings of English folksongs by Ralph Vaughan Williams scored for English horn and piano, followed by Zoltán Kodály’s Serenade for Two Violins and Viola, Op. 12, a work infused with the rhythms and sonorities of Hungarian folk music. Next, Pavel Haas’ 1929 composition Quintet for Winds offers a glimpse of the musical voice of this Jewish composer whose life was cut short at Auschwitz in 1944. We conclude with Beethoven’s ever-popular “Archduke” Trio for Piano and Strings in B-flat Major, Op. 97. Alessio Bax The following Monday, May 19, is the eve of this year’s Fredericksburg Chamber Music Festival. Our program offers performances by many of the long-time Fredericksburg festival musicians, including flutist Carol Wincenc, members of the Muir String Quartet, and pianist Michele Levin. CPE Bach’s Trio No. 15 in E Major, H. 580 for flute, oboe and bassoon opens the concert, followed by Carl Reinecke’s opulently romantic Trio for Oboe, Horn, and Piano in A minor, Op. 188. We conclude our Fredericksburg Chamber Music Festival programs with Antonín Dvoˇrák’s Piano Quintet in A Major, Op. 81.
till trying to forget our relentless winter, the phrase “Welcome the Sweet Summer Weather” is most sweet and welcome indeed, no matter how quickly and dramatically our conditions warm up, and no matter how thickly the pollen coats everything. The welcome, sweet phrase is also the title of the May 11 broadcast of the Classical WETA 90.9 FM program Choral Showcase, inspired by (and opening with) the song by Neidhart von Reuental, one of the most famous German minnesingers (active in the early 13th century). Our summer-focused program also has a Claudio Monteverdi madrigal about birds (comparing human and avian courtship), a newer work by John Clements that makes a similar comparison between us and flowers, and an Ode by Sibelius (from his Masonic Ritual Music) celebrating birds, flowers and more. The May 11 program concludes with a Gloria by Baldassarre Galuppi, a Venetian composer (also active in London and St. Petersburg) whose life spanned the Baroque and Classical periods. He worked both ends of the seriocomic spectrum too; he was considered by many to be the father of comic opera and was also prolific with his church music. The first Choral Showcase of the month, on May 4, brings us a recent CD by Boston Baroque of Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass. It’s a late work, considered by many (including Haydn biographer H. C. Robbins Landon) to be not only the composer’s best setting of the mass but his best work in any genre. The nickname comes from British admiral Horatio Nelson, who led his fleet in a stunning defeat of Napoleon’s navy at the Battle of the Nile. Martin Pearlman conducts. Randall Thompson’s a cappella masterpiece on good vs. evil, The Peaceable Kingdom, is also scheduled for May 4.

areas of the orchestra, concluding, as the young composer tells us, with a “wild, distracted, self-satisfied romp.” Blue Blazes was one of the featured works on the NSO’s 2012 concert tour of the Americas. Christoph Eschenbach conducted this performance in June 2012, just prior to leaving for the tour. Stephen Albert’s River Run Symphony was also a National Symphony Orchestra commission, and it was performed during the historic 1990 NSO tour to Russia, led by Mstislav Rostropovich. The 1985 Pulitzer Prizewinning composition is inspired by James Joyce’s novel Finnegan’s Wake and was the first commission by the John and June Hechinger Commissioning Fund for New Orchestral Works, which has to date produced more than 60 works by more than 50 American composers. May’s NSO Showcase will feature the shorter version of River Run, which the composer named Rivering Waters, comprising the first and last movements of the symphony. This performance was recorded in April 2013 at the Kennedy Center with Hugh Wolff conducting the NSO. Finally, in a June 2008 Kennedy Center performance, Leonard Slatkin conducted the NSO in Copland’s 3rd and last symphony, which celebrated the end of World War II. This triumphant symphony closes with a variation on Copland’s own Fanfare for the Common Man, and in the words of Serge Koussevitzky, who conducted the 1946 premiere, “There is no doubt about it — this is the greatest American Symphony. It goes from the heart to the heart.” If you think about it, that’s a pretty eloquent description of American music.

rom the finger-snapping opening of Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story to the mean streets of L.A. as envisioned in John Adams’ City Noir, May’s NSO Showcase broadcast on Classical WETA 90.9 FM is allAmerican. The featured works for the program, spotlighting performances by the National Symphony Orchestra, were all recorded live in concert at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. “The history of America is now changed,” an emotional Justice Felix Frankfurter declared to Leonard Bernstein at the 1957 world premiere of West Side Story — which just happened to take place in Washington, D.C.’s National Theatre. Bernstein later excerpted the Symphonic Dances from West Side Story for a New York Philharmonic celebration of his works. Christoph Eschenbach conducted the NSO in a January 2011 performance that is featured in the CD, Remembering JFK, on the Ondine label. If West Side Story is a tragic tale of love set against the backdrop of New York City gang warfare, the dark atmosphere of 1940s–’50s Los Angeles at the height of the film noir era permeates John Adams’ symphony, City Noir. It is, says Adams, “the third of a triptych of orchestral works that have as their theme the California experience, its landscape and its culture.” John Adams and the NSO performed City Noir last May. Sean Shepherd’s Blue Blazes conjures up a whole different palette. This “Concert Opener” was commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra and showcases all the
