WETA TV 26 Premieres New Series of the Popular Mystery Drama

WETA Focus W

ith the observance of Memorial Day in late May, WETA again presents to the American public a special night of remembrance, the 2016 National Memorial Day Concert, which is broadcast live from the grounds of the U.S. Capitol and airs on public television stations nationwide. WETA features the annual program as part of the station’s Honored to Serve initiative, which spotlights America’s men and women in uniform and their service and sacrifice on behalf of the nation. Honored to Serve helps local television viewers more fully recognize these citizen-soldiers as an important, integral part of the American family, rather than perceiving service personnel as “a force apart.” This month, Honored to Serve programming includes the National Memorial Day Concert, encore presentations of the 2014 WETA TV 26 film Arlington National Cemetery, and a series of half-hour productions — created by our TV 26 team and titled Honored to Serve — that air throughout May. These latter WETA programs are local in focus, featuring segments on service members, memorials in Greater Washington, and many other topics surrounding American forces. Tune in for these special programs, and thank you for your support for WETA.

Powell USA (Ret.); country music star Trace Adkins; classical superstar Renée Fleming; and Broadway star Alfie Boe; in performance with the National Symphony Orchestra led by conductor Jack Everly. Surrounding the concert broadcast and its encore presentation, WETA airs the TV 26 production Arlington National Cemetery (7 p.m. & 11 p.m.), an-hour long film that spotlights the history, mission, and daily operations of the sacred American landmark. These programs air as part of the WETA Honored to Serve initiative, which spotlights local stories about America’s service personnel. Watch for a series of TV 26-created Honored to Serve productions airing throughout May — see page 11 for details. National Memorial Day Concert is made possible by grants from the Lockheed Martin Corporation, the National Park Service, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Department of the Army, General Dynamics, PBS and public television stations nationwide. Sundays, May 8, 15 & 22 at 9 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD

ne of the world’s most remarkable actors brings a popular Masterpiece detective series to an end as Kenneth Branagh plays his last season in the BAFTA-winning role as Inspector Kurt Wallander. Masterpiece Mystery!: Wallander, The Final Season charts the final exploits of the melancholy Swede in three final cases based on the novels of late author Henning Mankell. Since the first season, the protagonist has dealt with personal demons and appalling health habits while battling northern Europe’s toughest criminals. Diagnosed with diabetes, he now also starts to lose his memory, and his greatest fear is succumbing to the same disease that felled his father: Alzheimer’s. In the final season, Wallander keeps burning his candle at both ends; dodging knives, bullets, vicious dogs, homicidal motorcyclists; and a sense that he is losing his focus. Will mishap, medical leave, suspension, or a well-earned retirement be his final exit from this punishing profession? STEFFAN HILL/LEFT BANK PICTURES (TV) LTD/YELLOW BIRD 2015

The pair dig into a terrifying internet crime investigation in which they track brutal killers; and the case takes a toll on the women. overnment Ministers come and go, but civil servants are in the Ministry forever. This classic, multiple BAFTA-winning satirical BBC comedy, a favorite of Margaret Thatcher, spotlights battles between politicians versus career government bureaucrats. Paul Eddington stars as the Right Honorable Jim Hacker, who has landed the plum job of Cabinet Minister to the Department of Administration. At last he can carry out some long-needed reforms — or so he thinks. He is totally unprepared for the deviousness of his Permanent Under-Secretary (Nigel Hawthorne), who knows how to confuse and manipulate the hapless Hacker.

NSO Showcase in May Wednesday, May 4, at 9 p.m.

M

By Nicole Lacroix, Evening On-Air Host

SCOTT SUCHMAN

ay’s broadcast of NSO Showcase opens with armchair travel at its finest. Ralph Vaughan Williams’ A London Symphony gives us a comprehensive tour of the city. It is London just before World War I. The London of Westminster chimes… “Hampstead Heath, Bloomsbury Square… the Strand with its great hotels and crowded streets and flaring lights.” And in the last movement, a sail on the Thames, inspired by H.G. Wells’ novel, “Tono-Bungay:” “England and the kingdom, Britain and the Empire… glide abeam, astern, sink down upon the horizon. …The river passes — London passes — England passes.” Guest conductor Matthew Halls leads the NSO performance, adding just the right British refinement to this score by Vaughan Williams, who claimed that his musical roots were “firmly planted in his own soil.” If music can take us on a journey across the pond, it can also illuminate the horrors of history. Shostakovich’s 5th Symphony is such a piece. Composed in 1937 during Stalin’s regime, it is subtitled “A Soviet artist’s creative response to justified criticism.” By some stroke of genius Shostakovich appears to toe the party line while simultaneously communicating with audiences traumatized by Stalin’s brutality. The public at the Leningrad premiere was so moved that they gave the symphony a half-hour ovation. One year before his death, Shostakovich confessed to Mstislav Rostropovich that the Symphony’s upbeat ending was a lie meant to fool the authorities. The real ending, he told his friend, should be played at half tempo… a slow, gut-wrenching and cynical statement representing the regime’s brutal repression. This is how Rostropovich and the NSO played it on their visit to Russia. You’ll hear how Christoph Eschenbach honors this tradition in May’s NSO Showcase. From Merry Old England to Moscow: two visionary symphonies on Classical WETA 90.9 FM.

Britten’s Spring Symphony on Choral Showcase Sunday, May 1, at 9 p.m.

pring is a funny thing in Washington. Sometimes it arrives in February, sometimes… later. Setting aside grumblings on foiled cherry blossom plans and other disappointments, Mother Nature’s inability to stick to the schedule makes it difficult for us too. We never know when it will be safe to schedule, weeks before the fact, music that celebrates our hard-earned, post-winter reward. This year, though, a new plan. Inspired by the May Day festival finale in Benjamin Britten’s Spring Symphony, we decided that May 1 is the day. And Britten’s choral triumph is the piece. Today we think of Britten as arguably the greatest setter of the English language, but, until his early 30s, he was known primarily as an instrumental composer. It was the opera Peter Grimes (although not Britten’s first work for singers) that showed the world his talent with English words. Britten’s knowledge of English literature was vast and, no doubt, fueled his innate understanding of how the English language and music should come together — and his selections of the best English writing to set.

VivaLaVoce on vivalavoce.org

For Spring Symphony, Britten chose poetry across the centuries, celebrating, as he put it, “the progress of winter to spring, and the reawakening of the earth Benjamin Britten and life.” Poems from the 16th and 17th centuries (by, among others, Edmund Spenser, John Milton and George Peele) welcome the signs of spring, including birds (especially the cuckoo) plus whistling schoolboys, and a hymn to the morning star, “Day’s Harbinger,” all in part 1. Part 2 — the slow movement of the “symphony,” (which might really better be described as an oratorio) — depicts languid afternoons with longer days and growing heat, and includes words by Britten’s friend W.H. Auden; it’s “Out on the Lawn I lie in Bed.” The 3rd part “scherzo” is about amorous spring thoughts and partying. Part 4, triumphant in C Major, includes a part for cow horn, which always inspires springtime smiles — just like the season. Happy May Day! PHOTOFEST

ARTS MANAGEMENT GROUP

Muir Quartet f you enjoy discovering music you’ve never heard before, make Monday nights at 9 p.m. your radio destination for in-concert recitals on Front Row Washington. Of course, we also present familiar works, including our May 2 program featuring Musicians From Marlboro at the Freer Gallery performing Mozart’s last major chamber work, the ebullient String Quintet in E-flat, K. 614, and Gabriel Fauré’s compelling first piano quartet, written shortly after he had met Liszt and Wagner. On the May 9 and 16 broadcasts we travel south for highlights from the 28th annual Fredericksburg Chamber Music Festival. “Zen of the River” by Chris Brubeck (son of jazz great Dave Brubeck) opens the first of our two programs. Composed in 2014 for the Muir Quartet, the piece was inspired by cellist Mike Reynolds’ love of fly-fishing on Montana’s famous Gallatin River. With movements including “Waltz of the Water Walker” and “The Tale of the Leaping Fish,” Brubeck writes, “In my mind’s eye I kept seeing the long arching casts of the fishing line over the surface of the waters.” Following David Hardy & Lisa Emenheiser a Brahms viola sonata, the program concludes with the world premiere of a new chamber orchestration of Joan Tower’s Red Maple, for bassoon and string quartet. Our second of two programs from last year’s Fredericksburg Festival includes music from J.S. Bach’s “Musical Offering” and the impassioned, energetic C minor piano quintet by the 18-year-old protégé of Johannes Brahms, Ernö von Dohnányi. A special treat is Yuko Uebayashi’s “Misericordia” composed for flutist Carol Wincenc. Inspired by both Carol’s musicianship and an Italian work of art, this lovely flute and string quartet is based on a life cycle of 10 months. Beginning with “Awakening,” each month bears a name, from “Bursting with Life” and “The Little Mischief Makers,” to “Waltz of the Roses and Bees” and “Turning to the Light.” On Monday, May 23, we feature two eminent musicians both affiliated with the National Symphony Orchestra: principal cellist David Hardy and pianist Lisa Emenheiser, performing sonatas by Benjamin Britten and Sergei Rachmaninoff at the National Gallery of Art. We close out the month on Memorial Day with the New Orchestra of Washington performing works by Dmitri Shostakovich and Rodion Shchedrin.
