COURTESY CAPITAL CONCERTS
ETA partners with Capital Concerts to present to a nationwide audience the 28th annual program National Memorial Day Concert. Airing May 28 at 8 p.m. after evening presentations of TV 26 Honored to Serve productions that feature local stories about America’s servicemen and women, this year’s concert broadcasts live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. Emmy- and Tony-Award winner Laurence Fishburne steps in for Gary Sinise to co-host the show with Tony Award-winner Joe Mantegna. The special night of remembrance is dedicated to America’s men and women in uniform, their families at home, and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation. Appearing in the show are: General Colin L. Powell USA (Ret.); Broadway/TV star Christopher Jackson; film actor John Ortiz; country music star Scotty McCreery; superstar soprano Renée Fleming; classical singer Russell Watson and Irish Tenor Ronan Tynan; in performance with the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of conductor Jack Everly. Auli’i Cravalho (Moana) sings the opening National Anthem. Between airings of the concert, on Sunday, May 28, at 9:30 p.m. WETA presents PBS Previews: The Vietnam War, an advance look at the upcoming monumental film from Ken Burns and Lynn Novick that is a co-production of Florentine Films and WETA. The preview features interviews with the filmmakers, behind-the-scenes footage, and exclusive clips from the series, which airs in September. The National Memorial Day Concert is made possible by grants from the Lockheed Martin Corporation, the National Park Service, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Department of the Army, General Dynamics, PBS and public television stations nationwide. n May after Home Fires concludes, Masterpiece presents an adaptation of the hit Broadway show King Charles III, a 2016 Tony nominee for Best Play that imagines Prince Charles’ ascension to the throne following Queen Elizabeth’s death. The late BAFTA-winning actor Timothy Pigott-Smith (The Jewel in the Crown), portrays Charles. The television adaptation stars members of the Broadway cast and reunites the creative team behind the acclaimed play: writer Mike Bartlett adapts from his own script — daringly written in blank verse — and Rupert Goold directs. In spine-tingling drama Dark Angel, Joanne Froggatt (above), who portrayed lady’s maid Anna on Downton Abbey, stars in a totally different role: the notorious Victorian poisoner Mary Ann Cotton, Britain’s first female serial killer, who served up cups of hot tea laced with arsenic to her unsuspecting victims. Directed by Brian Percival (Downton Abbey), Dark Angel dramatizes the events that drew a troubled woman ever deeper into a career of casual murder. Alun Armstrong (Little Dorrit, Bleak House) is among the stellar cast.

AMERICAN PUBLIC TELEVISION
idsomer Murders, Series 12 — featuring episodes new to WETA TV 26 — continues on the first three Thursdays at 8 p.m. this month with more cases starring John Nettles as DCI Tom Barnaby. When the series concludes its run, WETA reprises a 2014 episode of Poirot, with David Suchet in his signature role as Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot: In Dead Man’s Folly (May 18, 9:30 p.m.), the Belgian super-sleuth reluctantly attends a summer party where a friend (portrayed by Zoë Wanamaker) suspects a murder will take place. Poirot, as always, exercises his “little grey cells” to help crack the mystery that inevitably unfolds. Also this month, WETA reprises Rebecca (May 25, 8 p.m.), an acclaimed adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s haunting novel, in which the late mistress of the Manderley estate, Rebecca, casts her spell from beyond the grave. Charles Dance and Emilia Fox star as Maxim and his bride, the second Mrs. de Winter. Dame Diana Rigg won an Emmy Award for her portrayal of Mrs. Danvers, the sinister head housekeeper devoted to Rebecca. Each turn in the story draws the young bride deeper into the mystery of her drowned predecessor and her own relationship with her moody, enigmatic husband.

New TV 26 Production Explores Local Eateries, Premiering Friday, May 5 at 8:30 p.m. on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD
C
reated exclusively for viewers in Greater Washington, WETA TV 26’s locally focused productions spotlight communities throughout the national capital area, sharing the region’s stories and highlighting its cultural resources, activities and more. This month, an engaging new WETA TV 26 program — Neighborhood Eats — explores the delicious charms of favorite eateries. From fine dining locales and cherished mainstays to a new generation of up-and-coming entrepreneurs, the production explores a distinct, vibrant collection of restaurants, cafes and chefs that are proud to call themselves local. The 30-minute special is a companion piece to TV 26’s WETA Neighborhoods series on local area neighborhoods and visits locations throughout Washington in Dupont Circle, Georgetown, Anacostia and Capitol Hill. In the Dupont neighborhood, the production visits Jamie Leeds’ popular seafood establishment Hank’s Oyster Bar to learn how it became a catalyst for the revival of the neighborhood oyster house in D.C. Then it’s on to a restaurant that honors Washington’s Jewish food traditions while serving them up with a modern twist; and a visit to a classic French establishment featuring authentic fare and surroundings. Among the stops in Georgetown is old-world butcher shop Stachowski’s Market, which is, as owner Jamie Stachowski proudly says, “a corner candy store for carnivores,” offering custom cuts and gargantuan sandwiches. Other stops include a bakery/coffeeshop beloved for both its highly caffeinated offerings and an impressive array of homemade baked goods and pastries. Also in the spotlight is a weekly campus cookout manned by some dedicated university grillmasters. For those with Bakery delights
Vegetarian fare
other tastes, a healthful “farm-to-taco” vegetarian restaurant cooks up enticing offerings. In Anacostia, Neighborhood Eats celebrates a small pizza shop that follows the mantra “Cooked with Love” and has created deep bonds in the community — and introduces Horatio Davis (below), proprietor at Capitol Hill Crab Cakes (yes, it’s in Anacostia) to learn about his trademark cakes and signature “Anacostia Surf & Turf.” On Capitol Hill, the historic Beuchert’s Saloon allows you to step into a bygone era and enjoy the speakeasy atmosphere under the watchful eye of John Ignatius Beuchert, who ran a saloon under the same name in this exact spot more than a century ago. Additional stops include an Eastern Market source for authentic Tuscan
Crab cakes and more
favorites where regulars leave their mark on handdecorated plates — and a Philadelphia-inspired pretzel eatery with an array of delectable choices, including a Nutella-filled confection. Every city has its treasured eateries, each lending a distinctive flavor to the community they represent — and favored by “in-the-know” locals. To learn more about Washington, D.C.’s popular culinary delights and creative restaurateurs, tune in to Neighborhood Eats, as WETA TV 26 explores our community, one bite at a time.

Saturdays at 10 p.m. starting April 29 on WETA UK
BBC
four-part thriller spy series starring Toby Stephens (at right), Tom Hollander, Rupert PenryJones and Samuel West dramatizes the story of Blunt, Burgess, Philby and Maclean, the most notorious double agents in British history. In 1934 at Cambridge University, they establish a spy ring fueled by youthful idealism, committed to social justice and to fighting fascism — and the four become embroiled in obtaining and passing on vital information, betraying their country. Enigma secrets and atomic details are given to Russian contacts as the careers of the four take them from Guernica to Vienna, New York to Washington and, ultimately, Moscow. During nearly 20 years of counter-intelligence, the four are bound by their beliefs and secrets.

BBC
n original, ten-part BBC drama, Dickensian, presents a reinvention of Charles Dickens’ novels, weaving a storyline in which the author’s iconic characters live side by side in the same Victorian-era neighborhood. The cast, which includes Stephen Rea (The Honorable Woman), Pauline Collins (Quartet) and Anton Lesser (Endeavour), brings the atmospheric backdrop of old London to life. Writer Tony Jordan (Life on Mars, Hustle), intertwines stories of Dickens’ literary protagonists with a twist, taking familiar characters on new journeys. The series features romance, scandal and intrigue, with a crime investigation by Inspector Bucket among the drama’s central narrative threads.
Queen & Country
ormer ITN newsman Sir Trevor McDonald, one of the U.K.’s most honored journalists (at right, at the Tower of London) explores the traditions and institutions of the British monarchy as the nation marked Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee. From the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, to the Queen’s royal visits and a glimpse of the greatest historic royal places, McDonald spotlights crown customs in four programs. London: Royal City introduces the ongoing traditions of the monarchy in London; Royal Visit follows the Queen on a trip to Scotland and to Liverpool; The Queen’s Possessions spotlights Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, and much more; and Traveler follows royal travel to Commonwealth nations.

n engaging three-part BBC adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s 19th-century novel of espionage, anarchism, terrorism and repercussion stars Golden Globe nominee Toby Jones (The Hunger Games, Sherlock) as Anton Verloc, an unassuming Soho shopkeeper with a hidden life. Unbeknownst to even his loyal wife, Winnie (Vicky McClure, Line of Duty, Broadchurch), Verloc also works for the Russian embassy as a spy. Wishing to spur the London authorities into action against a group of local anarchists, Verloc’s employers give him a mission: plant a bomb at the Greenwich Observatory to paint the anarchists as terrorists. Verloc abhors the idea of killing civilians, but if he fails, his identity as a spy will be exposed.

If you haven’t yet heard of pianist Lukáš Vondráček, rest assured you will, starting with our May 15 broadcast of his superb Phillips Collection recital from last November. Vondráček — winner of the 2016 International Queen Elisabeth Piano Competition — made his first public appearance at the age of four and at age 15 made his debut with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra under Vladimir Ashkenazy. His Phillips Collection recital features a Mozart sonata, a Liszt etude, Czech dances by Smetana, and Brahms’ Piano Sonata No. 3. In recognition of Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month, our May 22 broadcast features a recital — co-presented by the Freer|Sackler and Smithsonian Associates — with the Shanghai Quartet, currently quartet-in-residence at Montclair State University. They are joined by celebrated pipa virtuoso Wu Man, a principal member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Project. Together they perform a wonderful program that includes Chinese folk songs arranged by Shanghai Quartet violinist Yi-Wen Jiang, and Red Lantern, Quintet for Pipa and String Quartet, a work the quartet commissioned from composer Zhao Lin based on his father Zhao Jiping’s original music for the 1991 film Raise the Red Lantern. Classical for Washington The Washington Chorus on Choral Showcase Sunday, May 14 at 9 p.m. By David Ginder, Morning On-Air Host
W
Classical WETA 90.9 FM
e’re celebrating, all this year, Classical WETA’s 10th anniversary as Washington’s exclusive classical station, and Choral Showcase’s part of that is a greater-than-usual emphasis on local music and music-making. This month, we focus on The Washington Chorus. Sadly, after nearly a decade with TWC, Music Director Julian Wachner is departing at the end of the season, but the great news is that he’s making the change so he’ll have more time for composing. His final concert as Washington Chorus music director is on May 14. On the evening of May 14 itself — not too long after you get home from the Maestro Julian Wachner concert — Choral Showcase airs The Washington Chorus’s Grammy-winning recording of Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem, conducted by Robert Shafer. That program includes comments on Britten’s masterpiece by Maestro Wachner, taken from a Classical Conversation I had with him in 2013 — the centennial of Britten’s birth — as TWC prepared for a November concert of the War Requiem. That year, Maestro Wachner conducted all of the composer’s choral music (numbering about 100 pieces!) at Trinity Wall Street, where Wachner is also music director. The War Requiem is a rare creation that is excellent in description and even better when experienced. It was commissioned for the consecration of the new Coventry Cathedral after the original 14th-century structure’s destruction by bombing during World War II. The piece combines the traditional Latin Requiem text with poetry from the trenches of World War I by English soldier Wilfred Owen, whose honest words are sung by the tenor and baritone soloists with a small chamber orchestra only. For the November 2013 War Requiem performance mentioned earlier, Wachner used Vale Rideout and Christopher Burchett as his men soloists, and they perform on the May 14 concert as well. The following weekend, on the May 21 broadcast of Choral Showcase, I’ve scheduled Maestro Wachner’s Rilke Songs, performed by the Elora Festival Singers.
A JFK Celebration on NSO Showcase Wednesday, May 3 at 9 p.m. By Nicole Lacroix, Evening On-Air Host
C
ourage, freedom, justice, service, gratitude. “In the year leading up to the centenary of John F. Kennedy’s birth on May 29, 2017, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is revitalizing the very mission of the institution created to honor him. Inspired by a handful of the enduring ideals he championed...the Center is re-envisioning itself as a ‘living memorial:’ a place that explores, challenges, and reflects the contemporary spirit of America.” So reads the Kennedy Center statement announcing their weeklong celebration, May 23-29, honoring our 35th president’s 100th birthday. Classical WETA 90.9 FM is kicking off the festivities early, on May 3 at 9 p.m., with an NSO Showcase concert featuring works that were performed for (and in one case, written for), Kennedy’s 1961 inauguration. This concert was recorded Inauguration weekend 2017, when National Symphony Orchestra music director designate Gianandrea Noseda led the ensemble in Bernstein’s Fanfare for the Inauguration of JFK, Copland’s Lincoln Portrait, and soundtracks of the movies JFK and Lincoln by John Williams. To this historic program, we’ve added a performance of Beethoven’s “Eroica” Symphony, with Herbert Blomstedt conducting, as a fitting tribute to the man who said “ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”
