WETA Focus T

his month, we at WETA are excited to premiere four special television productions. On May 3, we present the new concert program Emilio & Gloria Estefan: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, the latest production emanating from our longtime collaboration with the Library. In a wonderful showcase of diverse American music, the program captures a glittering night of celebration honoring the dynamic couple responsible for creating a unique Latin sound that transcends cultural boundaries. In another enduring tradition, WETA helps bring to the nation the annual star-studded broadcast National Memorial Day Concert, live from the grounds of the U.S. Capitol on the May holiday weekend. On May 14, we roll out Washington in the 2000s, the latest documentary in our ongoing TV 26 “decades” series of local productions that illuminate the history of the national capital area. Created exclusively for the community we serve, these productions spotlight major events, personalities and developments of the intriguing years in focus, which in this program include the indelible September 11 attacks and much more. Also this month, our magazine-style series WETA Arts continues with an exploration of local visual and performing arts and cultural heritage — the theme of the May program is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. Enjoy these engaging WETA offerings — and the month’s wide array of riveting dramas as well. Thank you for your support.

CAPITAL CONCERTS

n the 30th annual broadcast of America’s night of remembrance, WETA and Capital Concerts present to a nationwide audience the traditional program National Memorial Day Concert — live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. Tony Award-winner Joe Mantegna and Emmy Award-winner Gary Sinise (at left) co-host the television event, which honors America’s men and women in uniform, their families at home and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation. This year, the program marks the 75th anniversary of the D-Day invasion; offers a special 50th anniversary commemoration to honor the service and sacrifice of Vietnam War veterans; and pays tribute to America’s Gold Star families, for whom every day is Memorial Day. The all-star line-up includes General Colin L. Powell USA (Ret.); Academy Award-nominated actor Sam Elliott; acclaimed actor Dennis Haysbert; “Godmother of Soul” and Grammy Hall-of-Famer Patti LaBelle; multi-Grammy Award-winning bluegrass star Alison Krauss; two-time Grammy nominee Susan Boyle; SAG- and Grammy Award-nominated actress and singer Amber Riley; platinum-selling country music star Justin Moore; and television series star Jaina Lee Ortiz in performance with the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of pops conductor Jack Everly. Preceding the May 26 concert broadcast, WETA at 7 p.m. presents an encore airing of the TV 26 production Arlington National Cemetery, spotlighting how that sacred American place — which honors the dead, their service and their sacrifice — brings so much meaning and solace to the living. The programs repeat Monday, May 27 on WETA TV 26/HD. The National Memorial Day Concert is made possible by grants from the Lockheed Martin Corporation, the National Park Service, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Department of the Army, General Dynamics, PBS and public television stations nationwide. new WETA TV 26 history documentary, Washington in the 2000s, spotlights the first decade of the new millennium, an extraordinary time in the nation’s capital that was marked by tragedies, triumphs and transformations. Through archival footage and original interviews, the 60-minute program explores the decade’s major events, people and developments that ushered in a new era for Greater Washington. Weaving together stories of local politics, sports, arts and culture, Washington in the 2000s provides a striking portrayal of a metropolis reshaped by the times. Local radio legend Donnie Simpson narrates the program. The Pentagon, 9/11 The documentary is the latest in a series of WETA TV 26 productions that explore the history and culture of Greater Washington by decade as part of WETA’s mission to produce television in service to the local community. “The 2000s were a real turning point for the city as it exists today, when the uncertainty of the ’90s gave way to a new normal for Washingtonians,” said Kevin Harris, WETA Vice President and Television Station Manager. “Washington in the 2000s examines the pivotal moments in Washington’s recent history.” Among topics in the film are the 9/11 terrorist attack on the Pentagon and its impact; weeks of terrorism by the D.C. sniper; NBA legend Michael Jordan’s time with the Washington Wizards and historic seasons for Maryland’s Terps and GMU’s Patriots; the return of Major League Baseball and construction of a new stadium for the Nationals; panda-mania over a rare birth at the National Zoo; and the major storms “Snowpocalypse” and “Snowmageddon.” Covered as well are George W. Bush’s administration — and the political ascent of Barack Obama and what it meant to Washington; the generational change in local leadership from mayor Anthony Williams to Adrian Fenty; the massive President Bush, 2005 wave of investment, growth and change that transformed the community via urban development and gentrification; and the sudden emergence of Washington as a food mecca with a booming restaurant scene. Washington in the 2000s features a wide array of local notables, including former mayor Anthony Williams; chef and humanitarian José Andrés; former Washington Redskins player Santana Moss; sports columnists Thomas Boswell and Clinton Yates; Washington Nationals owner Mark Lerner; Howard University professor Natalie Hopkinson; sports anchor Lindsay Czarniak; and journalists Roxanne Roberts, Andrea Roane and Harry Jaffe. ETA presents to a nationwide audience a new performance special honoring Emilio and Gloria Estefan, the creative force behind the popularity of music steeped in Latino culture, as the Library of Congress awards the couple its 2019 Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. The lively 90-minute concert program, taped March 13 at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, features musical tributes to the Emilio & Gloria Estefan with Librarian of Congress Estefans by a star-studded lineup of talents on stage and showcases the Dr. Carla Hayden couple’s indelible mark on American music and culture. The program Emilio & Gloria Estefan: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song spotlights the couple’s greatest songs, presenting performances by Gloria Estefan, her daughter Emily Estefan, Patti LaBelle, Sarah Chang, José Feliciano, Il Volo, Cyndi Lauper, Gian Marco, Mauricio Martínez, Rita Moreno, Fernando Varela, Ana Villafañe and original cast members of “On Your Feet!,” a Broadway musical based on the lives and music of the Estefans. The broadcast includes a special presentation by Quincy Jones and remarks by David M. Rubenstein, Chairman of the Library’s James Madison Council — with Moreno and Andy García as hosts, and Emmy Award-winner Gregg Field as music director. Among the Estefans’ songs featured in concert are “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You,” “Mi Tierra,” “Oye Mi Canto,” “Reach,” “Somewhere (Un Lugar),” “Samba” and “Conga” — in addition to the Gershwins’ “Our Love Is Here to Stay” and “Embraceable You.” During the event, the Estefans — the first Hispanic artists to receive the award — are presented with the Gershwin Prize by Dr. Carla Hayden, Librarian of Congress, and a delegation of Members of Congress. The Prize is awarded annually to a composer or performer whose lifetime contributions exemplify the standard of excellence associated with George and Ira Gershwin. Recipients have included Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Sir Paul McCartney, Burt Bacharach and Hal David, Carole King, Billy Joel, Willie Nelson, Smokey Robinson and Tony Bennett. WETA has produced the broadcast for PBS since the Prize’s inception in 2007. This year’s Cast members of “On Your Feet!” program is a co-production of WETA; Bounce, a division of Concord Music Group; and the Library of Congress; in association with Latino Public Broadcasting. The Cuban-American Estefans created a unique sound of Latin rhythms that transcends cultural boundaries. Singer, songwriter, actress and author Gloria Estefan is one of the most successful crossover artists in Latin music history. She has sold more than 100 million records worldwide and achieved 38 #1 hits across the Billboard charts. Emilio Estefan is a musician, songwriter, record and television producer, best-selling author and filmmaker. Married since 1978, the Estefans started their rise to global fame in 1985 with Miami Sound Machine, which blended Latin and pop rhythms; and they helped propel to stardom many of today’s Latino artists, including Shakira, Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony, Jon Secada and Jennifer López. The couple, between them, has garnered 26 Grammy Awards and an array of other top honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom. To learn more, visit pbs.org/Gershwin-Prize.

AMERICAN PUBLIC TELEVISION

three-part docu-drama chronicles the life of England’s great queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603), featuring historians Suzannah Lipscomb (Hidden Killers) and Dan Jones (Secrets of Great British Castles) telling the heady tale of jealousy, treachery, ambition and tragedy alongside dramatizations of key clashes that shaped Elizabeth and England. Lily Cole portrays the queen in the series, which casts a new light on the life and nearly 50-year reign of the monarch. From the day she was born, until the day she died, Elizabeth was surrounded by enemies and faced scenarios that endangered her life. Episodes focus on Elizabeth’s turbulent childhood, when her mother was executed and the young girl was declared illegitimate and banished from court; her eventual ascent to the throne and the constant pressure from the Catholic Church and her other enemies; and Elizabeth’s victory over the Spanish Armada in 1588 and her final years.

WETA UK May Highlights B

Murder in Suburbia

Wednesdays at 9 p.m. starting May 8 on WETA UK

ritish police detective series Murder in Suburbia stars Caroline Catz (Doc Martin) as Detective Inspector Kate Ashurst and Lisa Faulkner (MI-5) as Detective Sergeant Emma Scribbins, an unorthodox homicide team in the Criminal Investigative Department of Middleford, a fictional suburban English town. Better known as Ash and Scribbs, the two are an unlikely pair: Ash, a graduate of a posh girls’ academy, has an analytical mind, while working-class Scribbs relies more on her instincts than the evidence before her. The two wisecracking cops form an unstoppable duo, working alongside their bemused boss (Jeremy Sheffield) to solve a variety of murder cases in the seemingly perfect suburbs. Series 1 features six episodes.

tephen Tompkinson (Ballykissangel) reprises his role as stubborn police inspector Alan Banks in three cases set against the backdrop of rural and urban Yorkshire. Andrea Lowe returns as feisty, headstrong DS Annie Cabbot, and Caroline Catz portrays DI Helen Morton. In the three mysteries, Banks is pushed to the brink as the team investigates the link between a woodland murder victim and a local crime boss, a missing persons case escalates into something tragic, and finally Banks comes to a crossroads as he tries to ensure that good triumphs over evil. The 2010-2016 series, based on Peter Robinson’s Inspector Alan Banks novels, concluded with these episodes.

When a prominent French politician is found dead in the middle of the Channel Tunnel, straddling the border between the UK and France, the two police officers — with strikingly different personalities — are sent to investigate on behalf of their respective countries and are forced into an uneasy partnership to find a calculating killer who is on a deadly moral crusade.

What begins as a sport betting investigation soon unmasks elite professional athletes and their connection to the shadowy world of performance enhancing drugs, match fixing, kickbacks and murder. Taking on the job of examiner for Australia’s National Crime Commission, King probes the death of a tennis player and then an array of unfolding tragedies.

NSO Showcase Presents Verdi’s Messa da Requiem Wednesday, May 1 at 9 p.m.

“W

By Nicole Lacroix, Afternoon On-Air Host

hat more can I say about this masterpiece? Verdi’s Requiem is inexplicable — it’s an oratorio, opera and a religious work all at once. I think this was Verdi’s ultimate attempt to get close to God. He was not a believer, but with this music he came very close to the divine because of his sheer sincerity — the integrity of Verdi in this piece is just supreme. When we bring together the NSO, The Washington Chorus, The Choral Arts Society of Washington, and soloists from Washington National Opera’s cast of Don Carlo to explore this legendary music, we will surely have an event to remember.” That’s National Symphony Orchestra Music Director Gianandrea Noseda describing what has been called his signature piece, Giuseppe Verdi’s powerful Messa da Requiem. In addition to the NSO and the two choruses, soloists included three principals from Washington National Opera’s Don Carlo — Leah Crocetto, Russell Thomas and Eric Owens — as well as Italian mezzo-soprano Veronica Simeoni. Maestro Noseda continued: “If you ask an Italian who best represents us, they may mention Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Dante — or Verdi. Like these other icons of his caliber, Verdi was both a gigantic figure and very human, leaving behind a legacy and vision of pure artistic revolution that many of us from Italy — myself included — take great pride in celebrating. This work is one that is close to my heart, and I sincerely hope you will join me so that we can share it together.” As DC Metro Theater Arts wrote in their review of the performance, “it is…positively uncommon for nearly an entire, hall-filling, four-story audience of more than 1,000 to spring to their feet, interspersed with hearty roars of approval and remain there curtain call after curtain call. But that is what happened.” If you weren’t in that audience, or if you were, here’s your chance to immerse yourself in this glorious music on Classical WETA’s NSO Showcase. Gianandrea Noseda

lassical WETA 90.9 FM’s Choral Showcase, our weekly choral music celebration, opens the new month on Sunday, May 5 with two settings of the Stabat Mater, a 13th-century devotional poem depicting the sorrows of the Blessed Mother as she stands at the foot of the Cross. Giovanni Pierluigi da St Cecilia with an Angel Palestrina’s version for double choir comes from the late Renaissance, and Gioachino Rossini’s Stabat Mater — from the 19th century — is both prayerful and dramatic. Rossini’s Stabat Mater will also be performed May 16 and 17 at the Kennedy Center by the National Symphony Orchestra under Gianandrea Noseda, with soloists and the University of Maryland Concert Choir. On May 12, in advance of The Choral Arts Society of Washington’s May 19 presentation of Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem at the Kennedy Center, Choral Showcase presents “Other Choral Works” by both Fauré and Maurice Duruflé. Fauré’s Messe Basse (Low Mass), the Pavane, and several motets will be heard alongside Duruflé’s Messe “Cum Jubilo” (“with jubilation”) and Four Motets on Gregorian Themes. St Cecilia — an early Christian martyr and the patron saint of music — has been honored by musicians over the centuries. A previously unknown work by Alessandro Scarlatti called The Cecilian Vespers will be heard May 19, from a live concert recording in 2004 with Nicholas McGegan and the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and Chorale. On May 26, “Pictures from the East” presents music of Gustav Holst, a polymath who was fascinated by Hindu literature. Unhappy with the English translations available, Holst learned Sanskrit in order to create his own. The result, some of his most sublime music, includes the Choral Hymns from the Rig Veda, Eastern Pictures, and a longer work for chorus and orchestra called The Cloud Messenger. Join me for Choral Showcase, Sundays at 9 p.m.

his month on Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s Front Row Washington we listen to young musicians in a variety of instrumental settings with music by living composers in every program. On May 6 we hear a concert by Benjamin Grosvenor (b. 1992) from the Candlelight Concert Society Jess Gillam, saxophone — a phenomenal performance from one of Britain’s foremost young pianists. The program includes music by Claude Debussy, Alban Berg and Maurice Ravel, and the first half of the concert features an interesting juxtaposition of 19th- and 21st-century works. Grosvenor plays Johannes Brahms’ Four Pieces (Klavierstücke) Op. 19, and in between each of the four pieces an interlude is inserted from the 2013 composition Hommage a Brahms by Brett Dean (b. 1961). It’s a combination that blurs the lines of new and old — and offers a new perspective of a popular work by Brahms (whose birthday is the following day, May 7). Composers Nico Muhly (b. 1981) and Timo Andres (b. 1985) are featured in the May 13 program, which presents a Phillips Collection concert that was curated by Muhly in 2016. Violinist Yevgeny Kutik and pianist Timo Andres play Compare Notes, by Muhly, and Andres’ own composition Word Fail, alongside works by Stravinsky. It’s a special program on May 20 as we listen to the United States recital debut of award-winning saxophonist Jess Gillam from the Phillips Collection. At age 20, she has already performed four times at the BBC Proms. In her U.S. recital debut she plays music by 10 composers, including Pedro Iturralde, Benjamin Britten, Michael Nyman and John Harle. Our final program of the month on May 27 features an early recital by pianist Jun Hwi Cho (b. 1996) — a 2014 Phillips Collection concert that was performed before he went to study at Juilliard for his Bachelor of Music degree. In this recital, he plays music by Beethoven, Messiaen, Schubert, Liszt and Gabriela Lena Frank Benjamin Grosvenor, piano (b. 1972). Frank’s composition Nocturno Nazqueno was commissioned for the 2014 New York International Piano Competition (at which Cho won First Prize) and was inspired by the region of Nazca, Peru, which is famous for its desert line drawings — the “Nazca” lines. Join me Mondays at 9 p.m. on Classical WETA 90.9 FM for Front Row Washington.
