n October 20, our friends and partners at PBS NewsHour marked a historical milestone well worth celebrating — the broadcast’s 35th anniversary on the air. Since its origins in 1975, the newscast has provided a truly incalculable service to the American people, informing and educating viewers around the nation and setting the standard for balanced, serious, long-form reporting and analysis. Each weeknight, as it has for decades, The NewsHour — a co-production with WETA — originates from our television studio in Northern Virginia, and we are enormously proud to play an important role in bringing this vital program to the public. Public television’s marquee newscast went on the air as the half-hour Robert MacNeil Report (soon renamed MacNeil/Lehrer Report) in the wake of the Senate Watergate Hearings, when MacNeil and Jim Lehrer guided the nation through an unfolding civics lesson that transfixed viewers across the country. Then, in 1983, the broadcast boldly expanded to become The MacNeil Lehrer NewsHour, the nation’s first hour-long nightly newscast. Heading the Corporation for Public Broadcasting at the time, I traveled the country with Jim and Robin, securing funding for the new broadcast, and I remember our exhilaration at presenting this new service. Millions upon millions of viewers have since tuned in. Through all of its iterations — as The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, with Robin’s retirement in 1995, to its current form as PBS NewsHour, a recognition of its role as public television’s news hub — the program has maintained an extraordinary standard of excellence, a magnificent achievement. For this remarkable legacy and unswerving devotion to public service, I congratulate Jim, Robin, and the entire NewsHour staff, including the newscast’s longtime top producers Les Crystal and Linda Winslow, and Simon Marks — Les’s incoming successor as president of MacNeil/Lehrer Productions. We at WETA look forward to another 35 years of great journalism.

November Classical Countdown on Classical WETA 90.9 FM

Classical WETA will post an online list of more than 200 classical works and invites listeners to vote for their favorite three pieces of music. “The polls” are open November 8–14 for one week and once votes are tallied, the top 90 pieces will be played November 22–25, counting down to the top piece, which airs at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Tina Fey: The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize

his year, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is honoring popular writer, producer, actor and comedian Tina Fey with its Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. The 13th recipient of the award, Fey will be fêted at a Kennedy Center ceremony on November 9, and in a broadcast tradition, WETA will once again bring the evening’s proceedings to a nationwide audience. A 90-minute special — a production of WETA, the Kennedy Center, Mark Krantz Productions, and CoMedia — will be taped by WETA at the event and will feature a star-studded cast of Fey’s friends and colleagues saluting her, including top entertainers Fred Armisen, Steve Carell, Jimmy Fallon, Jon Hamm, Jennifer Hudson, Jane Krakowski, Steve Martin, Seth Meyers, Lorne Michaels, Tracy Morgan, Amy Poehler and Betty White. The evening pays tribute to Fey’s humor and accomplishments. Fey is executive producer, head writer and star of NBC’s acclaimed comedy series 30 Rock, which has earned Fey a host of awards and accolades. In 2009, 30 Rock was nominated for a record 22 Emmy Awards, the most ever for any comedy series on television in a single season. Prior to creating 30 Rock, Fey completed nine seasons as head writer and cast member on NBC’s Saturday Night Live — and co-anchor of the show’s Weekend Update segment. Fey is also a screenwriter and film actress, counting among her credits the hit 2004 comedy Mean Girls, which she wrote; the 2008 film Baby Mama; and the recent comedy Date Night.

ovember brings more British drama to the WETA Television primetime television schedule, with Masterpiece Mystery! presenting the final installment of the series Sherlock starring Benedict Cumberbatch in the lead role, investigating cases in contemporary London. In the final case (for now) — The Great Game — Holmes and Watson must ward off threats to innocents by solving dangerous puzzles devised especially for the great sleuth. Watch for encore Sherlock presentations on Thursday nights, Sherlock alongside cases starring Jeremy Brett

in his signature portrayals of Holmes. Another star turn features David Suchet in a special triple feature of Poirot mysteries in which the Belgian sleuth uses his Doc Martin “little grey cells” to crack cases of kidnapping, theft and murder most foul. And near the end of the month, WETA begins rolling out the next series (III) of Doc Martin episodes. The stories follow the Poirot misadventures of the neurotic, big-city doctor as he contends with the eccentric personalities of the picturesque rural English village where he now practices medicine, suffering the consequences of his brusque and (delightfully) tactless manner. Along the journey, the series presents remarkable performances by death-defying trapeze troupe the Flying Cortes; by Russian barre act the Rodion Troupe (at bottom), winners of some of circus’ most coveted international honors; by dog trainer and eighth-generation circus performer Luciano Anastasini (at left); by tightrope walker Sarah Schwartz; and by veteran equestrian husband-and-wife team Christine Zerbini and Sultan Kumisbayev. The programs also reveal the human drama behind the scenes: hard realities facing the company during economic recession; haunted pasts; partners struggling with whether or not to continue collaborating; performers grappling with decisions about leaving the road for a “normal” life; love fizzling and blossoming inside the close-knit troupe; hirings and firings; and challenges of long-term illness. Through it all, the show must go on.

or centuries, the circus has captivated and delighted audiences, becoming a cultural phenomenon around the globe. Now, a new public television documentary from the production company Show of Force — the makers of the Emmy Award-winning April 2008 series Carrier — steps inside the ring for an intimate look at the mystery and thrill of it all with Circus. The multi-part film explores how a traveling CO UR big-top show functions and spotlights the TE SY DA VID SM lives of the men OLE R and women who create the magic of the show. The six-hour series, airing over three nights in November, chronicles a performance tour of the Big Apple Circus, cofounded by Paul Binder (at left). The film documents the passion, excitement, hardships and heartache that attend a traveling circus. From the training and rehearsals to the bravery and the intensity of life in the circus, the cameras capture it all. Circus offers an intimate portrait of the performers and those behind the scenes who construct the tent, fit and tailor the costumes and choreograph the show. The series highlights the physical demands of human performance as well as the confinements of living life on the road for 10 months straight with 150 other people of differing nationalities, belief systems and backgrounds. Constantly in motion, startlingly insular and completely interdependent for months on end, the circus community demands a uniquely high level of sociability, diplomacy and patience.

Fairfax Symphony Orchestra

n Monday, November 1 at 9 p.m., Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s weekly local concert broadcast Front Row Washington is pleased to present the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra performing under the baton of its new music director, Christopher Zimmerman. Founded in 1957, The Fairfax Symphony Orchestra has emerged over the years as one of the finest regional orchestras in the U.S., and is hailed as “the pride of Fairfax County.” On November 1, Classical WETA’s broadcast features highlights of the orchestra performing a concert recorded March 13, 2010, at George Mason University’s Center for the Arts. On the bill is the East Coast premiere of Avner Dorman’s Piano Concerto “Lost Souls,” composed for and played by pianist Alon Goldstein. Also on the program are two of the Four Legends from the Kalevala, op. 22 by Jean Sibelius. Tune in each Monday night at 9 p.m. for more local concerts by world-class ensembles. pera presentations on Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s weekly broadcast Classical WETA Opera House this month include productions from NPR’s World of Opera, hosted by Lisa Simeone. On the bill are Handel’s Rodelina (November 6), featuring a moving performance by Sonia Ganassi in the lead role in a production from the Palazzo Ducale in Martina Franca, Italy; Rossini’s Sigismondo (November 13), featuring Daniela Barcellona in the lead; Bellini’s Norma (November 20), featuring Katia Pelligrino in perhaps the ultimate bel canto classic and one of the most challenging soprano roles in opera; and Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel (November 27) from the Royal Albert Hall and the 2010 Proms Concerts. Classical WETA 90.9 FM

uring the month of November, Classical WETA’s Sunday broadcast Classical Showcase features a few remarkable compositions that were created “out of character” by their respective composers. Take Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle, for example, which airs on Choral Showcase Sunday, November 7, performed by the RIAS Chamber Choir. Rossini is best known for bubbly silliness on the opera stage, and with good reason — he was a comic genius. But listening to this stunningly poignant work, one can’t believe it’s by the same composer. It is a startling surprise. Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Flos Campi, scheduled on Choral Showcase Sunday, November 14, is equally surprising, but for a different reason. The piece is very much in the Vaughan Williams style of serene, beautifully moving harmonies. It was inspired by the Song of Solomon. Indeed, each section is prefaced with some of those famous words (in Latin). But, not a single one of those words, or any others, is sung in the piece. The chorus is wordless throughout and serves simply as a part of the fabric — along with the viola solo and small orchestra — of the work’s expression. Tune in to Choral Showcase on Sundays nights in November and enjoy these special selections.
