ew among us can survey the headlines in recent years without pondering our impact on the planet we inhabit. Climate change and powerful storms; energy debates and environmental concerns; agricultural crises and, of course, the drought in America’s Midwestern states spark reflection on our relationship with the land. This month, WETA and public television stations nationwide premiere a timely new Ken Burns film, The Dust Bowl, co-produced by Florentine Films and WETA, that looks back on the worst manmade ecological disaster in American history, exploring the tragedy that unfolded when we as a people ignored the limits of what nature could provide. Over the course of two nights, the four-hour film chronicles the destruction during the 1930s of Great Plains farmlands — and the effects of the massive, deadly dust storms that followed. The Dust Bowl is the latest in a remarkable series of acclaimed American history documentaries created by Ken in partnership with WETA. We are very proud to have collaborated with Ken for decades to produce and broadcast some of the most-watched programming in television history: a host of award-winning films that have included The Civil War, Baseball, Jazz, The War, The National Parks: America’s Best Idea and Prohibition. We are delighted also to have collaborated on The Dust Bowl with co-producers Dayton Duncan and Julie Dunfey of Florentine Films. Dayton — with whom we last partnered on The National Parks — wrote this fascinating new film. There is much more to come from our partnership with Ken. Next spring, The Central Park Five, created by Ken with his daughter, Sarah Burns, and son-in-law, David McMahon, comes to air. On the horizon as well are The Roosevelts (fall 2014), Jackie Robinson (2015) and Vietnam (2016). Thank you for your support, which helps WETA bring these superb programs to viewers in our community and around the nation. Sharon Percy Rockefeller, President & CEO, WETA

Documenting a Calamity The Dust Bowl follows the story behind a 10-year-long natural calamity of biblical proportions — encompassing 100 million acres in Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Colorado and New Mexico — when the skies withheld their rains and fields parched, and bewildered families huddled in dark rooms while angry winds shook their homes and pillars of dust choked out the mid-day sun. Each year, the storms grew more ferocious and more frequent, sweeping up millions of tons of earth, killing crops and livestock, covering farms and homes across the plains, and even spreading the dust clear across the country. The film outlines an epic of suffering — a crucible of dust, drought and Depression, when normally self-reliant fathers found themselves unable to provide for their families; when children were killed by “dust pneumonia”; when thousands of desperate Americans were torn from their homes and forced on the road in an exodus unlike anything the United States has ever seen.

he latest historical documentary film emanating from a decades-long partnership between WETA and Ken Burns, The Dust Bowl explores the story of the worst manmade ecological disaster in American history. The two-part, four-hour film, a co-production of Florentine Films and WETA, chronicles the environmental catastrophe that unfolded throughout the 1930s, destroying the farmlands of the Great Plains, turning prairies into deserts and unleashing a pattern of massive, deadly dust storms. The Dust Bowl was directed by Burns and co-produced with his Florentine Films colleagues Dayton Duncan and Julie Dunfey. Duncan, who wrote The National Parks: America’s Best Idea, also wrote the new film. Peter Coyote narrates The Dust Bowl.

Farm near Boise City, Oklahoma, 1936

First-Hand Testimonies The Dust Bowl is also a story of heroic perseverance against enormous odds: families finding ways to survive and hold on to their land; national and local government programs that kept hungry families afloat; and a partnership between government agencies and farmers to develop new farming and conservation methods. The film chronicles this critical moment in American history in all its complexities and profound human drama. It is, in part, oral history, using first-hand testimonies from 26 survivors of those hard times — what will probably be the last recorded testimony of the generation that lived through the Dust Bowl. Filled with seldom-seen movie footage, previously unpublished photographs, the songs of Woody Guthrie and the observations of two remarkable women — Sanora Babb and Caroline Henderson — who left behind eloquent written accounts, The Dust Bowl is a historical accounting of what happened and why during the 1930s on the southern plains.

any great men have played a part in shaping Britain’s noble heritage. Others, men like Edmund Blackadder — an anti-hero portrayed by actor and comedian Rowan Atkinson, not so much. In the popular sitcom Blackadder, Edmund and his descendants surface throughout Britain’s history, in respective series set in medieval, Elizabethan (left), Georgian and World War I eras, where as coward or cad they lower the level of nobility with an assortment of cunning plans and misfortunes — and smelly servant Baldrick, played by Tony Robinson. In Series I (“The Black Adder”), starting this month, Edmund, Duke of Edinburgh, is the much-despised younger son of fictitious King Richard IV (Brian Blessed). Haunted by his uncle Richard III (Peter Cook) whom he killed by mistake, Edmund lurks in the castle corridors of power, scheming to get the better of his elder brother, Harry.

ased on the semi-autobiographical writing of actress, writer and stand-up comedian Miranda Hart and her work in the BBC radio program Miranda Hart’s Joke Shop, the popular television series Miranda — now in a third season of production in Britain — is an acclaimed BBC sitcom about a social misfit. Miranda stands more than six feet tall, gets called “Sir” a bit too often, and finds social situations awkward, especially with men. She is a constant disappointment to her mother, who is desperate for her to get a proper job and a husband. Miranda owns (and lives above) her own joke shop but lacks any real capacity for business. A next-door restaurant employs a chef who is the object of Miranda’s romantic fancies. Around this background play out Miranda’s comedic misfortunes. Hart also recently appeared in the BBC series Call the Midwife as character Chummy Browne.

Mr. Bean

tanding the test of time, British actor and comedian Rowan Atkinson’s lovable, bumbling buffoon, Mr. Bean, is one of the most treasured characters in television history, a true comedy legend with a massive worldwide fan base. Mr. Bean has kept audiences in stitches for more than two decades — whether comedically stuffing a turkey, fumbling through a meeting with royalty, or simply finding himself in deep water at the swimming pool. Influenced by the physical comedy of performers such as Jacques Tati, Atkinson’s character rarely speaks; the series’ humor is derived from Mr. Bean’s encounters with people and unusual situations.

opular science series SciGirls rolls out 10 new episodes on the WETA Kids channel in November, engaging girls ages 9–13 in science, technology, engineering and math. Each half-hour episode follows a different group of enthusiastic, real SciGirls, who collaborate, communicate, engineer and discover — accompanied by two animated characters, a plucky SciGirl named Izzie and her best friend Jake, who tie the series together with their ongoing adventures. Filmed in reality TV’s verité-style, SciGirls makes science and engineering into the kind of social experience girls enjoy. Program participants work with women scientist- and engineer-mentors on projects such as engineering an ice-cream-making bike, designing an earthquake app, learning urban beekeeping, using real forensic methods to solve a “crime,” and more. The series also features remarkable interactivity, garnering a “New Approaches” Daytime Emmy Award for linking its shows and website — pbskids.org/scigirls — in inventive ways to ignite girls’ curiosity. SciGirls is funded by the National Science Foundation. Additional funding is provided by L’Oreal USA.

Classical W TA 90.9 FM

Classical for Washington

n 1831, Frédéric Chopin arrived in Paris to find the city overrun with pianists. As he wrote in a letter home to Warsaw, “I don’t know where there are more jackasses and more virtuosos than here.” That he struck up a friendship with Charles-Valentin Alkan, an Orthodox Jew, is no surprise. They shared incredible pianistic skills, yet they both eschewed the concert stage and the overblown world of Parisian hauteur. Instead, they composed some of the most stunning Romantic piano music ever written, embracing small musical forms such as dances and folk tunes, and melding them with lyricism, balance, and exquisite melodic phrasing. On Monday night, November 5 at 9 p.m., Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s local concert broadcast Front Row Washington presents Canadian piano virtuoso MarcAndré Hamelin in a recital showcasing these two great 19th-century composers. Recorded last April in the Kennedy Center’s Terrace Theater, the concert was presented by Pro Musica Hebraica, a non-profit organization dedicated to presenting lost and neglected masterpieces of Jewish classical music. The program features Alkan’s Souvenirs: Trois Morceaux dans le genre pathétique and Symphony for Solo Piano, as well as Chopin’s Nocturne in D-flat major, Op. 27/2 and Barcarolle in F-sharp major, Op. 60. Of particular note is an encore composed by Mr. Hamelin himself in 2011. Titled Variations on a Theme of Paganini, the piece is a staggeringly difficult send-up of Paganini’s familiar work, complete with boogie-woogie asides, jazz riffs, and stylistic quotes from Bach, Beethoven, Liszt and Rachmaninoff that you won’t want to miss! Front Row Washington is supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Choral Showcase in November

lassical WETA 90.9 FM’s broadcast Choral Showcase wraps up Hooked on Classical weekend — November 2-4 — on Sunday night at 9 p.m. with music from long before and long after the Classical Period. Among featured works is one from the 500-year-old Eton College Choirbook, a magnificent setting of the Magnificat by William, Monk of Stratford. The performance by Tonus Peregrinus of this music will spellbind you from first note to last. Also on the broadcast is Lori Laitman’s Vedem, a powerful tribute to the human spirit. It is a setting of poetry by teenage boys who were prisoners in the Terezín concentration camp during World War II. Like so many, the boys did not survive, but their memory lives on thanks to the miraculous preservation of their magazine — Vedem — and Lori Laitman’s compelling 2010 piece. On Sunday, November 11, Choral Showcase puts a new spin on a Twin Spin weekend. Anticipating what Johannes Brahms would do 200 years later in his German Requiem (which aired in late-October), Heinrich Schütz’s setting of “How Lovely Are Thy Tabernacles” (which Brahms would use as the middle movement of his great work) is featured, in addition to Schütz’s German Burial Mass, which, like the Brahms, uses text other than the Latin Requiem Mass to honor our dead.
