In the Spotlight… Midsomer Murders, Series VII

ETA Television presents a new season of the popular crime series Midsomer Murders, set in a fictional county in rural England. Based on novels by Caroline Graham, the programs feature a lush visual style, quirky characters, ubiquitous red herrings, and a rural countryside reminiscent of classic public television British mysteries of the past. Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby, played by actor John Nettles, is the series protagonist. In Series VII, Barnaby’s long-time sidekick, Sgt. Troy (played by Daniel Casey), departs in a dramatic investigation, with new colleague Sgt. Dan Scott (portrayed by John Hopkins) joining in on cases. Series VII features seven stories, airing Sunday nights at 7:30 before Masterpiece and on Thursday nights as double features from 8 to 11 p.m.

he series Nature takes a provocative look at the love life of animals in Love in the Animal Kingdom, spotlighting polar bear courtship; the feminine wiles of a young gorilla; dance rituals and the search for Mr. Right among thousands of flamingos; the open “marriages” of blue-footed boobies; the soap opera arrangements of gibbons and all the subtle, outrageous, romantic antics that go into finding a partner. Finding and securing the perfect mate in the animal world brings out the best of the male population. Many go to great competitive and creative lengths to win over their future partner, but females usually have the final say. After all, the fundamental bonds they will share as a couple will have a direct impact on whether their offspring will survive and thrive. Yet the question persists, can we call these bonds love? The mating game is as varied and intriguing as the animal kingdom itself and though humans can never be sure what animals feel, it often looks like love and even the most scientific of observers can find it difficult to know what else to call it. Support for this Nature program was made possible in part by the Arnhold Family in memory of Clarisse Arnhold, the Lillian Goldman Charitable Trust, the Filomen M. D’Agostino Foundation, the Sun Hill Foundation, by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and by the nation’s public television stations.

James Dean on The WETA Movie ollowing the October 26 airing of East of Eden, the Saturday-night WETA Movie continues the James Dean theme this month with broadcasts of the 1955 film classic Rebel Without a Cause (November 2), co-starring Dean, Natalie Wood, and Sal Mineo in a tale of teenage rebellion; and George Stevens’ epic Giant (November 9), with Dean alongside Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson in a drama spotlighting a Texas cattle rancher, his family and his associates. Stevens won the Academy Award for Best Director for the 1956 film. Other Saturday films in November are George Roy Hill’s 1966 film Hawaii (November 16); and Bernardo Bertolucci’s 1987 Best Picture winner, The Last Emperor (November 23).

Remembering JFK arking the 50th anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy, WETA presents programming exploring the life and death of America’s 35th president, one of the nation’s most beloved and mourned leaders. The collection of broadcasts, which include brief WETA Extra mini-documentary interstitials produced by WETA TV 26, offer perspectives on a defining historical moment of the 20th century. On November 11–12, WETA airs JFK: American Experience, a new four-hour, two-part biography of Kennedy. Enshrined in myth by an assassin’s bullet, John F. Kennedy’s presidency has often defied objective appraisal. This new portrait, which includes interviews with Kennedy family members, members of JFK’s administration, and historians including Robert Caro, Robert Dallek and Evan Thomas, offers a fresh assessment of the man, his accomplishments and his unfulfilled promise. The film is the 17th program in American Experience’s Peabody Award-winning series The Presidents, which presents portraits of U.S. leaders that explore their lives and legacies. “John F. Kennedy is an iconic figure in American politics, known for his soaring rhetoric and the youthful energy and glamour he brought to the presidency,” says filmmaker Susan Bellows. “However, he wasn’t a born politician, and he struggled with debilitating health challenges throughout his life. Our film looks at his journey to

the Oval Office, the ambition that propelled him there, and how he navigated one of the most pivotal eras in American history.” Also this month, brief WETA Extra interstitial films feature commentary from two of the leading JFK historians, Michael Beschloss and Robert Dallek; spotlight JFK’s historic “Peace in Our Time” speech at American University; explore his inauguration; and recount stories of Kennedy as a young congressman and senator in Washington. In other programming, NOVA: Cold Case JFK (November 13) examines what science can tell us about the Kennedy assassination and investigations that followed. Secrets of the Dead: JFK: One PM Central Standard Time (November 13) and JFK: Breaking the News (November 19) explore news coverage of JFK’s assassination, the former spotlighting the CBS Newsroom and Walter Cronkite, and the latter examining the emergence of television as a source of breaking news. Frontline: Who Was Lee Harvey Oswald? (November 19) presents an investigative report on the man at the center of the crime, sifting through psychological, political and forensic evidence of his role in the assassination. Exclusive corporate funding for American Experience is provided by Liberty Mutual Insurance. Major funding provided by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and public television viewers.

After Emancipation, African Americans sought to realize the promise of freedom — rebuilding families shattered by slavery; demanding economic, political and civil rights; even winning elected office — but a few years later, an intransigent South mounted a swift and vicious campaign of terror to restore white supremacy and roll back African-American rights. {DVI} Repeats Wed 11/6, 3pm; Thur 11/7, 1pm 9:00 JIMI HENDRIX: AMERICAN MASTERS — The biography series explores the life and music of pioneering guitarist Jimi Hendrix through never-before-seen performance footage, archival interviews, photographs and family letters. DALLAS MORNING NEWS

WETA Television

Tuesday, November 19 at 10 p.m. on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD The two-hour Frontline special Who Was Lee Harvey Oswald? probes in depth the evidence surrounding Oswald’s role in JFK’s assassination.

Episode 5 of 6. Rise! (1940–1968). African Americans who fought fascism in World War II came home to face the same old racial violence. But mass media — from print to radio and TV — broadcast that injustice, planting seeds of resistance. In 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a city bus in Montgomery, Alabama, heralding the dawn of a movement of resistance, with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as its public face. Before long, masses of African Americans practiced nonviolence to integrate public schools, lunch counters and more. Nonviolence, however, was often met with violence. In 1968, Dr. King was assassinated, unleashing a new call for “Black Power” across the country. {DVI} Repeats Wed 11/20, 3pm; Thur 11/20, 1pm 9:00 JFK: BREAKING THE NEWS — On Nov. 22, 1963, the motorcade transporting President John F. Kennedy was met by thousands of citizens and hundreds of members of the press as it slowly made its way through downtown Dallas. Moments later, the president’s assassination would forever change the country, the world and the landscape of broadcast journalism. Narrated by Emmy-winning newscaster Jane Pauley, this program focuses on media coverage of the national tragedy, with a look at the emergence of television as the nation’s primary source of breaking news information. Repeats Sun 11/24, 2:30pm 10:00 FRONTLINE: WHO WAS LEE HARVEY OSWALD? — Frontline marks the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy assassination with a two-hour encore of its investigative biography of the man at the center of the crime. At the heart of the assassination lies the puzzle of Lee Harvey Oswald: Was he the emotionally disturbed lone gunman of the 1964 Warren Commission report? Was he, as the House Select Committee on Assassinations concluded, probably part of a conspiracy on that day in Dallas? Or was he an unwitting fall guy, the patsy, as Oswald himself claimed when he was arrested on November 22, 1963? Twenty years ago, Frontline’s investigative team spent more than a year re-examining Oswald’s life and sifting through the psychological, political and forensic evidence of his role in the assassination. 12M CHARLIE ROSE — Repeats next weekday, noon

9:00 NOVA: ASTEROID: DOOMSDAY OR PAYDAY? — The asteroid that exploded in the skies over Siberia, injuring more than 1,000 and damaging buildings in six cities, was a shocking reminder that Earth is a target in a cosmic shooting range. These space rocks have the potential to be killers. In a collision with Earth, they could set off deadly blast waves, raging fires and colossal tidal waves. But some audacious entrepreneurs look at asteroids and see payday, not doomsday. Will asteroids turn out to be our economic salvation — or instruments of extinction? {DVI} Repeats Thur 11/21, 4pm 10:00 COMET ENCOUNTER — In this program featuring breathtaking imagery, scientists around the world follow a once-in-a-lifetime event, the path of the sungrazing comet ISON. The comet, somewhere between one and 10 kilometers in diameter, is currently just beyond the orbit of Jupiter. As it races past Earth toward the sun, it will likely develop a tail to light up the night skies. Then ISON will slingshot around the back of the sun, to emerge perhaps brighter than ever. ISON could evaporate completely, or the sun’s gravity could tear it apart, producing a so-called “string of pearls” — several small comets arching across the night sky. 7:00 PBS NEWSHOUR 8:00 THE AFRICAN AMERICANS: MANY RIVERS TO CROSS — Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr., chronicles the full sweep of African-American history, from the origins of slavery on the African continent up to the present. Episode 6 of 6. It’s Nation Time (1968–2013). After 1968, African Americans set out to build a bright future on the foundation of the civil rights movement’s victories, but a growing class disparity threatened to split the black community. As African Americans won political office across the country and the black middle class made progress, larger economic and political forces isolated the black urban poor. When Barack Obama was elected president in 2008, many hoped that America had finally transcended racism. “H

ere rests in honored glory AN AMERICAN SOLDIER Known but to God.” This is the inscription on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, and if you’ve never visited, or if you haven’t been in some time, Classical WETA’s Veteran’s Day tribute — Scott Eyerly’s Arlington Sons — might inspire you to renew your acquaintance with this revered monument. In 2011, Broadway and Metropolitan Opera star David Pittsinger personally commissioned composer/librettist Scott Eyerly to write and compose a unique musical piece for father and son. Pittsinger envisioned a work that would not only showcase him and his son Richard (a boy soprano at New York’s esteemed Saint Thomas Choir School) but also honor his own father, a U.S. Army veteran who served as a distinguished guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery. The result of this collaboration is a 12-minute piece titled Arlington Sons, which depicts a father and son visiting Arlington Cemetery to watch the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns. The three generations represented in this operatic scene mirror the continuity of the guard ceremony itself — a beautifully choreographed ritual which is re-enacted each hour in winter and each half-hour in summer, assuring that the Tomb is guarded 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Through this lyrical and intimate musical work, a family’s moment on a sunny hilltop becomes a loving lesson in honor, sacrifice and patriotism. This performance of Arlington Sons comes to us from its world premiere in October 2012 with the Pittsburgh Symphony conducted by Leonard Slatkin. The piece airs Monday, November 11 at 8 p.m. on Classical WETA 90.9 FM.

lassical WETA’s NSO Showcase opens the 2013–2014 season of broadcasts from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, showcasing three major works from recent National Symphony Orchestra concerts recorded by Classical WETA audio engineer Charles Lawson. Carl Orff’s jolly monks are in rare form as NSO Showcase kicks off on Wednesday, November 6 with a performance of Carmina Burana. Orff’s towering cantata based on texts from a medieval monastery is in turn ribald, rowdy, rousing and rapturous. We’ll hear a September 2011 performance from the Kennedy Center, featuring Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos conducting the National Symphony Orchestra and the Choral Arts Society of Washington and Children’s Chorus of Washington. Soloists are soprano Laura Claycomb, tenor Nicholas Phan and baritone Hugh Russell. Also on the bill is Edvard Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite No.1, which opens with sunrise in the North African desert and ends with a ghoulish encounter with a troll in the Hall of the Mountain King. Polish conductor Krzysztof Urbanski conducts the NSO in this June 2013 performance. Next, NSO Showcase features the renowned Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg in the solo role from a concert recorded at the Kennedy Center in February 2012, with Christoph Eschenbach conducting. The great violinist David Oistrakh described the Scherzo movement of Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No.1 as “evil, demonic and prickly.” One of the works that Shostakovich had to hide from the Soviet authorities until after the death of Stalin, the Violin Concerto was premiered in 1955, and incorporates many of Shostakovich’s coded messages, including allusions to his name Nadja Salernoand quotations from his own 7th Sonnenberg Symphony and Beethoven’s 5th.
