Black America Since MLK: And Still I Rise New WETA co-production with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. airs Tuesdays, November 15 & 22, 8-10 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD
A
new four-hour documentary hosted, produced and written by Harvard scholar and WETA partner Henry Louis Gates, Jr. chronicles 50 years of the AfricanAmerican experience. Charting black Americans’ remarkable social and economic progress, the series also spotlights the formidable challenges and obstacles that remain facing the community. Black America Since MLK: And Still I Rise airs in two parts over two Tuesdays, looking at the arc of American history from 1965 to the present. The series continues a conversation about race in America that has been featured in Gates’ previous acclaimed films — including his Peabody Award-winning documentary The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross and African American Lives — and presents reflections upon events of the last half-century from African Americans who helped to shape the nation’s shared history.
Eyewitnesses to History Among those interviewed in Black America Since MLK are Oprah Winfrey, Nas, Ava DuVernay, Jesse Jackson, Dr. Cornel West, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, Donna Brazile, Robert L. Johnson, DeRay Mckesson, Charlayne Hunter-Gault, former Attorney General Eric Holder and Shonda Rhimes — as well as Hurricane Katrina eyewitnesses, public intellectuals, education reformers, police officers in communities that have been shaken by racial unrest, and many others.
2 NOVEMBER 2016
“We are at a critical moment in the black experience in America,” says Gates. “Over the past 50 years, following the remarkable strides made during the civil rights movement of Dr. King, African Americans have achieved a level of cultural, political and economic influence that those early civil rights leaders could hardly have dreamed of. At the same time, poverty remains a stubbornly persistent way of life for far too many African Americans, incarceration rates in our community are at an all-time high and people are crying out to have their basic human dignity recognized, leading some to wonder if things really have changed. This series looks at the rich history of how we arrived where we are today — through all the highs and lows — and poses provocative questions about how we keep up a momentum of progress.”
Profound Questions Almost everyone educated in the United States learns about the nation’s 20th-century civil rights achievements and about how America moved itself forward. Black America Since MLK explores what has happened since, stepping out of the sanctified past and into a complex contemporary America. Today, Barack Obama sits in the White House and African Americans wield influence in every domain, from business to academia to the arts. At the same time, America incarcerates black people at six times the rate of whites, and African Americans face significant financial inequality — whites currently

truly been realized? What obstacles have stood in the way of full racial equality? How did African Americans themselves contribute to this trajectory? Do attempts to level the playing field for black people automatically come at the expense of white people? And, as we turn from the past to the present moment, have we, as a country, moved on from the ideas about race that once defined us? Why does race still have the power to divide? Embarking on a deeply personal journey, Gates explores the state of black America — and of our nation as a whole. Aretha Franklin, 1969
possess 13 times the wealth of blacks. Many schools and neighborhoods are more segregated than they were in 1965, and police killings of unarmed black men recur with tragic frequency, inspiring radically different responses within black and white communities. The series questions how America ended up here, when half a century ago racial equality seemed imminent, even inevitable. In Black America Since MLK, Gates examines major events and turning points in American race relations and black history over the last five decades, asking difficult questions: Has the promise of the civil rights movement

S
Tuesdays at 8 p.m. starting November 1 on WETA UK

The 10-episode 2013 series stars Craig McLachlan as Dr. Lucien Blake, who returns home to Ballarat (near Melbourne) in 1959 to take over his father’s country medical practice after decades away and a life tarnished by war and inhumanity. The former Army Medical Officer and P.O.W. — a keeper of secrets and solver of mysteries — is a practicing doctor and the town’s police surgeon, investigating deaths with his father’s former assistant, widow Jean Beazley (Nadine Garner), and district nurse Mattie O’Brien (Cate Wolfe).

Saturdays at 9 p.m. starting November 12 on WETA UK
he popular BBC series stars Nathaniel Parker as suave blue-blooded detective Thomas Lynley, 8th Earl of Asherton, and Sharon Small as his prickly, plebian colleague, Sergeant Havers, in the acclaimed adaptations of crime author Elizabeth George’s “Inspector Lynley” novels. Foisted upon each other, Lynley and Havers must overcome their personality and class differences to solve murder mysteries. Sorting out their professional problems is less difficult than contending with their personal lives: Lynley has been scorned by the love of his life, and Havers’ father is on his deathbed and she struggles to aid her ill mother.
The Queen’s Palaces
three-part series hosted by BBC journalist Fiona Bruce celebrates three of Britain’s royal buildings — Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse — showcasing the treasures found within them. The Queen’s Palaces spotlights the art and architecture, interior decoration, and priceless objects and artifacts of these historic buildings, revealing the fascinating stories behind them. In each episode, Bruce, along with curators of the Royal Collection, explores the history of the respective palace’s creation as well.

ETA UK reprises noir crime drama Hinterland, set in the scenic, centuries-old town of Aberystwyth, Wales, a place where history, myth and tradition come face to face with modern life — and panoramic vistas and quaint facade hide a multitude of sins. Into this insular realm steps the enigmatic outsider DCI Tom Mathias (Richard Harrington, of Poldark), a brilliant but troubled sleuth on the run from his past. Together with his equally intelligent and complex partner, hometown girl DI Mared Rhys (Mali Harries, of Foyle’s War), Mathias tackles murder cases from the windswept Welsh coastline to the badlands and beyond.

Saturdays at 9 p.m.
ach Saturday night at 9 p.m., Classical WETA 90.9 FM presents broadcasts of the Concerts from the Library of Congress, a series featuring world-class classical music artists recorded live at the Library’s Coolidge Auditorium in Washington, D.C. The hour-long programs, funded in part by WETA members, are Borromeo Quartet co-produced in a partnership between WETA, the Library of Congress and Classic Digital Syndications — and are hosted by Bill McGlaughlin. On the November 5 broadcast, Bartók and Borromeo, the charismatic Borromeo Quartet Amanda Forsythe performs Béla Bartók’s magisterial Fifth Quartet (1935), a landmark Library of Congress Coolidge Foundation commission that was recorded on LC Stradivari instruments. Also on the program are moments from Bartok’s own Library concert, a now-legendary duo recital appearance with violinist Josef Szigeti. Apollo’s Fire: The Power of Love, the November 12 program, features the acclaimed Baroque ensemble Apollo’s Fire, with soprano Amanda Forsythe, performing an exhilarating hour of vocal and instrumental music by Uccellini, Handel, Vivaldi and Purcell. The November 19 broadcast, Schumann Sampler, spotlights two Robert Schumann works performed by American pianist Richard Goode and a quartet of star players from the Chamber Richard Goode Music Society of Lincoln Center: Daniel Hope, violin; Paul Neubauer, viola; David Finckel, cello; and Wu Han, piano. On the bill are mercurial Humoreske, a rarely heard piece of many moods, and Schumann’s second piano quartet, a favorite of chamber music lovers. Finishing out the month on November 26 is Cello Collection, pairing three stellar cellists with three esteemed pianists in a program that showcases the exquisite range of the cello. Performing works by Barber, Bloch and Schubert are Alban Gerhardt, cello and Anne-Marie McDermott, piano; Amit Peled, cello and Noreen Polera, piano; and Lynn Harrell, cello and Victor Santiago Ascuncion, piano. Tune in each Saturday night and enjoy Concerts from the Library of Congress, airing Amit Peled through December on Classical WETA.
Grande Messe des Morts on Choral Showcase Sunday, November 13 at 9 p.m.
T
By David Ginder, Morning On-Air Host
he last time the Berlioz Requiem was performed in Washington was 15 years ago. On Choral Showcase in the last six years, it’s appeared once. Both deficiencies are about to be remedied. The Choral Arts Society of Washington performs Grande Messe des Morts on November 20 at the Kennedy Center — and our Sunday, November 13 broadcast presents the Colin Davis recording. What keeps the piece at arm’s distance? The number of people involved is one issue. Choral Arts will use 276 total performers, including four (antiphonal) offstage brass ensembles, plus many extras on the stage. As ensemble executive directors like to point out, “It’s a budget buster!” Such enormity might suggest that the piece is also mired in dense complexity, making it difficult to grasp, but, actually, the opposite is true. Berlioz wrote here in a fairly straightforward manner. He reasoned that doing so would offset the inherent challenges of performance in a cathedral, where a (seemingly attractive) “live” sound can make things muddy due to the room’s reverberation and echo. But, if the writing is clear to start, the challenge is suppressed even before it becomes a problem. And — great for us — that also makes for an easily-appreciated intense experience. Enjoy the November 13 program, and tune in to Choral Showcase each Sunday night at 9 p.m. on Classical WETA 90.9 FM.

ith exceptional pianists inhabiting stages around the world, it’s noteworthy to discover a player who makes you sit up and really pay attention. That’s the case with Scottish-born pianist Steven Osborne, who returned to the Phillips Collection this past February to perform works by Schubert, Debussy and Rachmaninoff. The Washington Post called Osborne “a master of momentum and color, a wielder of power and a sure navigator through huge landscapes.” The Naumburg Competition winner’s playing is both intelligent and compelling, offering a fresh take on works you think you know. Hear Osborne on the November 7, 9 p.m. broadcast of Front Row Washington. What better way to celebrate Dumbarton Concerts’ nearly four decades of presenting music than with a trio of exceptional players? Pianist Alon Goldstein, cellist Amit Peled, and clarinetist Alexander Fiterstein give a nod to Beethoven’s birthday with the Atlantic Brass Quintet “Gassenhauer” Trio, and their recital also includes Bloch’s “From Jewish Life” and Brahms’ famous Clarinet Trio, airing on our November 14, 9 p.m. broadcast. We end the month with a bit of brass — specifically, the Atlantic Brass Quintet from the Barns at Wolf Trap on the November 28 program. From Handel’s Water Music to Enrique Crespo’s Suite Americana No. 1, there’s something to please everyone as you get back in the groove after the Thanksgiving holiday. Hear local performances by world-class artists each Monday night at 9 p.m. on Classical WETA 90.9 FM on Front Row Washington. Gianandrea Noseda
