his month, WETA Television premieres two new programs that typify what we especially enjoy creating for the public we serve. The new TV 26 film Breakfast in Washington spotlights the bountiful offerings that make our vibrant community of Greater Washington a wonderful place to live. Produced exclusively for our local audience, the film explores superb breakfast fare throughout the area, presenting an array of mouthwatering meals for a wide range of budgets. It will inspire you to enjoy a special dining experience with family and friends. The other new WETA production, A Broadway Celebration: In Performance at the White House, presents to a nationwide PBS audience an important arts event from the nation’s capital. The special concert, hosted by President and Mrs. Obama in the East Room of the White House in July, showcases the theatrical arts via performances of show tunes by top Broadways stars and some new faces. The program is the forty-fifth production of WETA’s In Performance at the White House series, and it is a great pleasure for us to continue to share with the public the rich cultural life of our nation. Enjoy these two new WETA productions this month, and thank you for your support.

hat role have religious ideas and spiritual experience played in shaping the social, political and cultural life of what has become the world’s most religiously diverse nation? The six-hour series God in America, a joint presentation of American Experience and Frontline, explores the historical role of religion in the public life of the United States, examining the potent and complex interaction between religion and democracy; the origins of the American concept of religious liberty; and the controversial evolution of that ideal in the nation’s courts and political arena. The programs also explore the role of religion in American social reform movements, and the intersection of political struggle and spiritual faith in the lives of key American historical figures. Major funding for God in America is provided by The Pew Charitable Trusts and the Fetzer Institute, with additional support from The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations. Corporate funding for American Experience is provided by Liberty Mutual; major funding is provided by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. re you having that familiar pang with the dawn’s early light? Tired of cereal? Head out to the sound of the whisk and the sizzle of a hot griddle, to the aroma of fresh creations from the oven and waffle iron, and to tastes beyond imagination! Whether you seek a chef’s artistry or yearn for Grandma’s home cooking, WETA Television has just the place for you. A visual feast, the new TV 26 film Breakfast in Washington presents mouthwatering suggestions for the most important meal of the day, exploring top dining spots around the area — from upscale cuisine to curbside walk-ups for eats on the go and everything in between. Meet the people behind the menus, hear about their offerings and find out what keeps folks coming back for more. The one-hour program starts with a visit to a trio of top-tier establishments known for the Washington “power breakfast” — Capitol Hill’s Bistro Bis, the Lafayette Room at the Hay Adams Hotel near the White House, and Seasons, in Georgetown’s Four Seasons Hotel, where in addition to the lemon-ricotta pancakes you can find Washington’s most luxurious special-occasion breakfast. Then its onward to restaurants featuring classic American fare, from MGM Roast Beef in Brentwood, home of the “Belly Buster” breakfast brisket sandwich; and The Diner on 18th Street, open to “early birds, night owls and everyone in between”; to Herndon’s homey Virginia Kitchen, where longtime staff and customers are honored on the menu. For classic Southern breakfasts, WETA’s film spotlights the warmly elegant Grille at Morrison House in Alexandria; Washington’s down-home diner landmark, The Florida Avenue Grill; and New Jersey Avenue’s Art and Soul, 2 october 2010

where Chicago’s Art Smith — who followed some Very Special Clients to Washington — spreads love through great food. There are authentic New York deli delights at Chutzpah in Fair Oaks; eye-popping Austrian pastries and scrambled soufflé at Georgetown’s Kafe Leopold + Konditorei, spiced feasts at Eritrean-themed Café Aurora in Alexandria, and superb Mexican tacos to-go from Rosslyn food cart District Taco. For French-inspired delights, Breakfast in Washington visits Mosaic Cuisine and Café for waffles so perfect they need no syrup or butter; Rosslyn’s Choupi Cart for the finest take-away crˆepes, made-to-order; and D.C.’s Post Modern Brasserie for brioche french toast and support for local, sustainable produce. The film also travels to Frederick restaurant Volt, where the eggs and other local, organic ingredients are so fresh they taste, well…better! Viewers can also take in cheerfully served offerings at Alexandria’s Vaso’s Kitchen; and sumptuous, consummately elegant brunches at D.C.’s Tabard Inn, the labyrinthine Mansion on O Street and The Corcoran Gallery of Art; plus a dim sum tasting brunch by Chef José Andrés’ team at Café Atlántico; and sustainable Mediterranean seafood specialties — including lobster benedict — at Greekthemed Kellari Taverna. So many breakfasts, so little time. Go forth and explore! But first, tune in to Breakfast in Washington. You’ll be inspired to sample the great meals that Greater Washington has to offer.

ased on the best-selling children’s book series by Susan Meddaugh, the animated children’s television series Martha Speaks is designed to help young children build the skills they need to learn to read. The series follows the adventures of Martha, a loveable dog whose appetite for alphabet soup gives her the ability to speak. Using her newfound abilities, Martha gets jobs, wears disguises, foils bad guys, wins contests — and orders lots of steaks for herself. An array of messes and hilarious entanglements ensue for Martha, for her family and for the unsuspecting people of her town. Being a talking dog, Martha lives in a vocabulary-rich environment. The educational goal of the series is to bolster the vocabulary of 4- to 7-year-olds within the context of great stories in engaging, comical ways. Around and in between the half-hour programs’ two 11-minute stories are a variety of animated interstitials that further reinforce the vocabulary spotlighted in each episode.

ook’s Country from America’s Test Kitchen features regional home cooking from across the country. The series, like the successful Cook’s Country magazine, approaches food in a practical, no-nonsense way — in a renovated 1806 farmhouse, the cast scientifically re-imagines familyfriendly recipes for the modern home cook. Host Christopher Kimball (in red apron) works alongside chefs Bridget Lancaster and Erin McMurrer as they re-create blue-ribbon regional specialties — such as Creole fried chicken and Alabama BBQ chicken — from across the United States. They also bake up a few “lost” desserts, including tunnel of fudge cake and red velvet cake, and tackle classic American fare in need of makeovers (roast beef and gravy, baked-stuffed shrimp and old-fashioned roast turkey). Jack Bishop challenges Kimball to live tastings of ingredients, while equipment expert Adam Reid reveals his recommendations. DANIEL J. VAN ACKERE ©2008 BOSTON COMMON PRESS

wo distinctly different quartets anchor Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s local concert broadcast Front Row Washington this month. On Monday, October 11, we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with the Brazilian Guitar Quartet in concert at the National Gallery of Art. Known as the “Dream Team” in its Brazilian Guitar Quartet native Brazil, the quartet arranges all its own music for the unique configuration of two eight-string and two six-string guitars. In this recital, the quartet plays music by Isaac Albéniz, Ronaldo Miranda, Francisco Mignone, and the ever-popular Bachianas Brasileiras No. 1 by Heitor Villa-Lobos. On Monday, October 18, Front Row Washington welcomes the Miró Quartet at Dumbarton Concerts in historic Georgetown. Now in its second decade, the quartet was hailed by The New York Times as possessing “explosive vigor and technical finesse.” Their concert includes Beethoven’s String Quartet in C Minor, Op. 18, no. 4 and the world premiere of Tudor Dominik Maican’s String Quartet No. 4. In a culinary twist to the second half of the program, called “Quartet à la carte,” the Miró Quartet performs five string quartet movements chosen by the audience from a “menu” of musical works arranged as a five-course meal, appetizer through dessert. Will the audience choose Miró Quartet Haydn or Jerome Kern to end the meal? Tune in to find out!

Choral Showcase

lassical WETA 90.9 FM’s Sunday program Choral Showcase begins the month in Theme Weekend mode. If, by the end of “Dance Weekend,” October 1–3, you’re still not convinced about the glories of movement, a Madrigal-Ballet by Claudio Monteverdi on Choral Showcase will surely change your mind, demonstrating that a great choral celebration of the dance is a joyous mix of rhythms and moods. That weekend’s Choral Showcase broadcast, Sunday, October 3 at 9 p.m., also presents Psalms settings by Edvard Grieg and J.S. Bach. On the next weekend — October 8–10 — Classical WETA’s Theme Weekend “Twin Spins” wraps up Sunday at 9 p.m. on Choral Showcase, when the broadcast presents the Finnish National Opera Chorus performing Rachmaninoff’s Vespers, and Emily Van Evera singing the Salve Regina from Handel’s Carmelite Vespers. For more on Theme Weekends and Choral Showcase, visit classicalweta.org.

Vivica Genaux

n a special local opera broadcast, world-famous mezzo-soprano Vivica Genaux hits the high notes on Classical WETA Opera House on Saturday, October 16 starting at 1 p.m., as the broadcast presents Rossini’s La Cenerentola. Recorded by Classical WETA last May in The George Washington University’s Lisner Auditorium, this Washington Concert Opera production of Rossini’s take on the Cinderella story features Ms. Genaux in the title role, with impressive support from conductor Antony Walker and singers Kenneth Tarver, Daniel Mobbs, Eduardo Chama, Daniele Lorio, Magdalena Wor, Eugene Galvin, and the Washington Concert Opera orchestra and chorus.
