t WETA, we relish the opportunity to create and broadcast programs that spotlight the attractions of our area and the dazzling cultural events of Greater Washington. This month, we are excited to premiere a new television special produced exclusively for our community and to bring to local radio listeners a special classical music concert recorded at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. On Wednesday, October 2, Classical WETA 90.9 FM presents a special program of highlights from the National Symphony Orchestra’s Season Opening Ball Concert, which is being held in the Kennedy Center Concert Hall on September 29. The performance — recorded and engineered by Classical WETA’s Charles Lawson — features superstar cellist Yo-Yo Ma and young organ virtuoso Cameron Carpenter with the ensemble, led by NSO Music Director Christoph Eschenbach. We are delighted to be able to produce this special program and share sublime music with Greater Washington. Details are on page 16. On Tuesday, October 15, on WETA TV 26 and WETA HD, we roll out Burgers in Washington, a new half-hour program that joins our portfolio of productions spotlighting the attractions, institutions and offerings of our local community. Our local films have included many culinary specials, and Burgers in Washington will inspire you to go out and sample the extraordinary flavors that the Washington area’s thriving restaurant scene has to offer. his month, WETA reprises the 2012 Ken Burns film The Dust Bowl, a four-hour historical documentary created in partnership with WETA. The program, directed by Burns and co-produced with his Florentine Films colleagues Dayton Duncan and Julie Dunfey, explores the story of the worst manmade ecological disaster in American history. The film chronicles the environmental catastrophe that unfolded when a wheat boom spurred the “Great Plow-Up” of the Great Plains and was followed by a decade of drought during the 1930s, turning prairies into deserts, unleashing a pattern of massive, deadly dust storms, and impelling a great migration westward by people looking to start a new life elsewhere. The Dust Bowl encompassed 100 million acres in Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Colorado and New Mexico, and created an epic of suffering — a crucible of dust, drought and Depression. Featuring first-hand testimony from survivors of those hard times, the film The Dust Bowl explores this critical epoch in American history in all its complexities and human drama.

Burgers ore than any other culinary creation, the hamburger is celebrated as America’s iconic dish. In Greater Washington, sales are booming and restaurants are engaged in a spirited game of one-upmanship. But how can you find the juiciest, most delicious burger? For those who want to give their backyard grill a rest, the local dining scene offers an astonishing array of hearty options, and TV 26’s new production, Burgers in Washington, is the tour guide. From its origins a century ago as a simple meat patty on a bun, the sandwich now comes in dazzlingly diverse forms in Greater Washington: from gourmet offerings to downhome plain and simple, in all shapes and sizes, with widely varying accompaniments, and even featuring exotic meats — or no meat at all! And don’t forget the fries or tater tots. Boasting secret seasonings and different oils and cuts, these burger sidekicks also cultivate devoted fans. Starting at Silver Spring’s Quarry House Tavern, which has been serving up hamburgers for more than 70 years, Burgers in Washington visits 17 area eateries — every one a burger paradise. The film visits establishments throughout the District, Maryland and Virginia to spotlight dry-aged beef burgers and lamb-bacon burgers, duck burgers and antelope sliders, vegetarian creations and raw vegan ones

too. There’s a chain offering organic burgers, and a restaurant that offers a burger capped with pulled pork and fried pickles. Where can you get a burger stacked between onion rings, or a batter-fried burger straight out of a Dublin-style pub? How about a delicious, meatless burger made of almonds, hemp seeds and veggies that never touches a grill? Or perhaps your inner Elvis is craving a peanut butter bacon burger topped with tomato jam. Capping the program’s tour is a visit to Greater Washington’s biggest homegrown burger success story: Arlington-based Five Guys, which has grown from one humble location to become a popular nationwide chain over the last 25 years. he National Football League, a multibillion-dollar commercial juggernaut, presides over America’s indisputable national pastime. But the NFL is under assault as thousands of former players and a host of scientists claim the league has tried to cover up how football inflicted brain injuries on many players. What did the NFL know, and when did it know it? What’s the truth about the risks to players? What can be done? In a special two-hour investigation that touches on the risks to high school football players as well, Frontline and prize-winning journalists Mark Fainaru-Wada and Steve Fainaru of ESPN explore the story of the NFL, football, and brain injuries. The investigation explores how, for years, the league worked to refute scientific evidence that the violent collisions at the heart of the game are linked to an alarming incidence of early-onset dementia, catastrophic brain damage and other devastating consequences, even death.

The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross

six-part series from Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr., recounts the full trajectory of African-American history, from the origins of slavery on the African continent through five centuries of remarkable historic events up to the present. Presented and written by Gates, the series draws on some of America’s top historians and untapped primary sources, journeying across two continents to shed light on the experience of being African American. Gates chronicles the evolution of the African-American people, as well as the multiplicity of cultural institutions, political strategies, and religious and social perspectives they developed — forging their own history, culture and society. Interviewees include former Black Panther Kathleen Cleaver, school integration pioneers Ruby Bridges (left, with Gates) and Charlayne Hunter-Gault, Congressman John Lewis, civil rights activist Diane Nash and former Secretary of State Colin Powell. Superheroes: A Never-Ending Battle

three-hour documentary miniseries examines the dawn of the comic book genre and its legacy, tracing the evolution of the characters who leapt from the pages over the last 75 years and their ongoing cultural impact worldwide. The “disposable diversions” were created in large part by the children of immigrants whose fierce loyalty to a new homeland laid the foundation of a multibillion-dollar industry that has become an influential part of our national identity. Liev Schreiber hosts and narrates. Airing back-to-back, episodes are: “Truth, Justice and the American Way” (1938–1958), which follows the fortunes of superheroes from the Depression through Superman’s television debut; “Great Power, Great Responsibility” (1959–1977), exploring how superheroes affect and reflect relevant social mores; and “A Hero Can Be Anyone” (1978–present), which tracks the enthusiasm for superheroes as they’re embraced in all media and by all demographics. Victorian-era department store where ladies shop for suits and suitors is the setting for love, intrigue, and a revolution in retailing in the new, seven-part Masterpiece Classic drama series The Paradise. A love story, mystery, social comedy, and fairy tale all in one, the lavish costume drama stars Joanna Vanderham as Denise Lovett, a beautiful salesgirl; and Emun Elliott portrays John Moray, the ruthless, enigmatic, handsome store owner who is driving smaller shops out of business. The shopping spectacle also stars Elaine Cassidy as Katherine Glendenning, Moray’s prime love interest; Patrick Malahide as Katherine’s father, a calculating banker who can pull the plug on Moray at any time; Sarah Lancashire as Miss Audrey, the imperious but endearing head of Ladies Wear; and David Hayman as Jonas, the sinister house detective, who sees and knows all. The Paradise is inspired by Émile Zola’s classic 1883 novel, Au Bonheur des dames (The Ladies’ Paradise), about the transformative powers of capitalism. The novel describes an exciting innovation of the era: the modern department store, an engine of commerce that was sweeping out the old and ushering in a glorious new consumer age.

n Sunday nights after Masterpiece, WETA reprises the original Foyle’s War drama series starring Michael Kitchen as the laconic Christopher Foyle, detective chief superintendent in the town of Hastings on the south coast of England. Combining uncompromising historical accuracy with compelling mysteries, the award-winning British series, which originally aired on Masterpiece, is set in the beautiful English countryside amid the disorder and danger of World War II. As the war ravages the social fabric of the small community, Foyle investigates crimes the conflict has fostered on the home front. His is an ordinary struggle, against everyday evil, in extraordinarily dangerous times. The series also stars Honeysuckle Weeks and Anthony Howell, and features guest actors including Edward Fox, Robert Hardy, David Horovitch, Rosamund Pike and Charles Dance.

7:00 PBS NEWSHOUR 8:00 LATINO AMERICANS — A landmark six-hour production by WETA is the first major television documentary series to chronicle the rich and varied history of Latinos, who for more than 500 years have helped shape what is today the United States and have become the country’s largest minority group. Actor Benjamin Bratt narrates. Parts 5 & 6 of 6. Prejudice and Pride/Peril and Promise. The series explores the creation of the proud “Chicano” identity as labor leaders organize farm workers in California; and as activists push for better education opportunities for Latinos, the inclusion of Latino studies, and empowerment in the political process. The final hour examines the past 30 years, as a second wave of Cubans and hundreds of thousands of Salvadorans, Nicaraguans and Guatemalans flee to the U.S., creating a debate over undocumented immigrants that leads to calls for tightened borders, English-only laws and efforts to brand the undocumented as a drain on public resources. Simultaneously, the Latino influence is booming and Latino Americans become the largest and youngest growing sector of the American population. 9:00 MASTERPIECE MYSTERY!: FOYLE’S WAR, SERIES VII: SUNFLOWER — Detective Chief Superintendent Christopher Foyle (Michael Kitchen) and his loyal friend Sam (Honeysuckle Weeks) return in the mystery series, now set in post-war 1946–47 England. Sunflower. Foyle is tasked with protecting Karl Strasser, a Nazi officer turned MI5 informant who believes he’s in danger. America wants Strasser extradited for his involvement in a wartime event, but British Intelligence is determined to protect him. The series follows a spirited young girl and her sidekick as they embark on adventures and learn foundational math concepts and skills. Co-creators Billy Aronson (Postcards from Buster) and Jennifer Oxley have teamed with The Fred Rogers Company (makers of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood) to bring young viewers a new way to experience math through Peg and Cat’s often-hilarious adventures. Each episode features a story in which Peg and Cat encounter an unexpected challenge that requires them to use math and problem-solving skills in order to save the day. While teaching specific math lessons, the series displays the value of resilience and perseverance in problem-solving. ETA UK continues presenting episodes of The Complete Mr. Selfridge, starring Jeremy Piven (Entourage) as the flamboyant American department store magnate who brings American retail strategies to early 1900s London. After the eight-part series ends this month, on October 30, WETA UK premieres the five-part drama Land Girls, a BBC series that commemorated the 70th anniversary of World War II. Boasting an all-star cast including Nathaniel Parker, Sophie Ward and Christine Bottomley, the production follows the lives, loves, highs and lows of four young English women — Nancy, Joyce, Bea and Annie — who leave their homes and families to join the Woman’s Land Army. A civilian organization, the WLA sent city women to rural farms to replace the male workers who had been called up to the military. In the series, the women perform their duties in the English countryside; and through scandal, pregnancy, death and marriage, the bonds between them are tested as they grow into womanhood in the war-weary environment of World War II England.

et in the early 1950s in the heart of the beautiful English countryside — the Cotswolds — the ten-part, 2013 BBC drama series Father Brown stars Mark Williams (left) as the eponymous sleuth, a Catholic priest who happens to have a talent for solving crimes. Based on the short stories by G.K. Chesterton, Father Brown follows this kindly cleric as he cracks cases in his community using intuition and psychology. His is a quintessentially English world: drawing rooms in large country houses, miles of countryside, village halls and secret gardens, as well as country fairs, railway stations and rural parish churches. Many years spent hearing his parishioners’ confessions have given him an uncanny insight into the origins of evil and the workings of the criminal mind. Full of humor and compassion, but with big dramatic twists, the series features period charm combined with a contemporary edge to the storytelling.

Since then, this mighty block of land has stayed in much the same place, standing alone and straddling the equator. It has also been protected from crippling ice ages and destructive invasions and has been nurtured by gentle changes in climate and geology. As a result, nowhere else has such a breathtaking variety of animals and plants flourished so successfully. NSO Music Director Christoph Eschenbach officially opens the orchestra’s 2013–14 season with superstar cellist Yo-Yo Ma performing Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations. Also on the program are Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet and Bizet’s Carmen Suite No 2. The gala concert concludes with the NSO debut of sensational young organist Cameron Carpenter playing the finale of Saint-Saens’s famous “Organ Symphony” — Movement 4 Maestro Christoph from Symphony No. 3 in C eschenbach Minor, Op.78. Then, in November, Classical WETA’s exclusive broadcast NSO Showcase resumes with a brand new season on Wednesday, November 6 at 9 p.m. with all-new programs airing the first Wednesday of each month through July 2014. October 19: Listeners’ Choice Opera Verdi/Wagner Edition Celebrating the 200th birthday this year of two opera greats, Classical WETA asks listeners to visit classicalweta.org through October 5 to vote for their favorite Verdi and Wagner operas. The Classical WETA Opera House program begins October 19 at 1 p.m., counting down the top-10 operas by playing arias or excerpts from those works, wrapping up with a complete performance of the No.1 opera. October 26: Verdi’s Rigoletto Bavarian State Opera, Munich Marco Armiliato, conductor In this sensational drama, Verdi serves up over-thetop passion and appalling violence — all conveyed in music that careens vividly through its characters’ conflicting emotions. Waterford Concert Series on Front Row Washington

his month, Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s local concert broadcast Front Row Washington presents recitals from four different venues, beginning with Dumbarton Concerts in Georgetown. On Monday, October 7, the program features guitarist Berta Rojas performing Fernando Sor’s Variations on a theme by Mozart, along with works by Agustín Pío Barrios, Francisco Tárrega and Heitor-Villa Lobos, including his ever-popular Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5, sung by soprano Rebecca Lister. On Monday, October 14, Classical WETA is proud to present the debut of the Waterford Concert Series on Front Row Washington, with a recital by renowned pianist

John O’Conor. The Old School in the bucolic town of Waterford, Virginia, provides the stage for Mr. O’Conor’s performance, which features Haydn’s Sonata in F Major, Hob. XVI: 23, two nocturnes by John Field, Beethoven’s “Pathétique” Piano Sonata in C Minor, and Franz Schubert’s own Sonata in C minor, D. 958. The October 21 program, recorded at the National Gallery of Art, features works by Mozart and Beethoven with musicians from the NGA String Quartet, the NGA Orchestra and the Phillips Camerata. Lithuanian-born pianist Edvinas Minkstimas opens the recital with Mozart’s Piano Sonata in A Minor, K. 310, after which all the musicians gather onstage to perform Mozart’s well-known Divertimento no. 1 in D Major, K. 136, and Beethoven’s early Piano Concerto no. 2, Op. 19. The month’s Front Row Washington broadcasts wrap up Monday, October 28 with a delightful Phillips Collection concert featuring Swiss-born clarinetist Reto Bieri and pianist Benjamin Engeli. Together, they perform Brahms’ F minor sonata, Op. 120, no. 1; Debussy’s Première Rhapsody; and Francis Poulenc’s engaging Sonata for clarinet and piano.

Choral Showcase in October

n a cappella program of rarities is the centerpiece of Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s Sunday-night broadcast Choral Showcase on October 20. The program begins with a work by Max Reger, who, outside his native Germany, has yet to catch on (at least, outside academic circles). His Motet, “O Lord, Rebuke me not” may be the start of a change. It is for five-part chorus, but quickly divides into even more voices (up to 9 at one point), reflecting his life-long love of counterpoint. The text comes from the Psalms. Its bow to the Baroque is clear, but not just in its counterpoint; it is constructed as a free fantasy with chorale and big double fugue. Next is Michael Tippett’s “The Weeping Babe,” with text by Edith Sitwell. The piece is a sad nativity carol that anticipates the Crucifixion. For Grechaninov’s Seven Days of Passion, the composer chose a text from the Orthodox Church, and the result is a moving and rich experience of Russian singing; the Classical WETA recording was the first ever of this music (made in the mid-1990s), conducted by Valéry Polyansky with the Russian State Symphonic Cappella. The week before, on October 13, the broadcast features another premiere recording: Berlioz’s rarely performed Messe solennelle. The Classical WETA recording is conducted by John Eliot Gardiner (who rediscovered the work in 1991!), as is the performance of Brahms’s greatly loved German Requiem on the October 6 broadcast.
